My name is Jon Bennett and I am a third year architecture student. What’s there to know? Well I love to travel and have been able to go to all sorts of amazing places including Brazil, France, Greece, Mexico, and Japan. I love to experience new cultures and traveling definitely shaped my interest in architecture. Outside of architecture I train karate, love to go bouldering, have begun long distance running and am constantly trying to learn new languages. These things aside, this portfolio is a small collection of my some of my most recent work. Cheers!

To whom it may concern: Re:

Jon Bennett

This is to confirm that Jon Bennett was employed in our Vancouver office from September until December 2015. During his employment he worked on a wide range of projects. Highlights include the development of schematic design for two signature towers in Coal Harbour, Vancouver, connected with a sky bridge; and the design development of a 40 storey mixed use tower. Jon worked on 3D modeling, Auto Cad drawings, unit layouts, space planning, parking layouts and graphics preparation. He was an integral part of the team showing leadership and creativity in finding solutions to problems as they arose with good time management skills. We hope that the time Jon spent in our office has made a positive contribution to his education. I would recommend Jon. Please contact me if you require more information. PROTEUS MOVES: GALERIA DOS TRIBOS 3B DESIGN STUDIO // DERECK REVINGTON // FALL 2016 // INDIVIDUAL

This driving force of this project was a study of energies/forces which drive and embody the natural phenomena of an underwater volcanic eruption. There is a certain tension, a certain embodied energy: a huge force suddenly able to rise up from beneath the surface with little warning. The ash cloud pushes through the explosion’s epicenter and soon calms to become a slow, billowing cloud. My models, sketches and photographic experiments served as tools in an iterative process to try to explore and capture the forces driving this natural phenomena. Creating many model iterations while studying the event moved me away from trying to capture the formal qualities of the explosion and instead towards trying to emulate its energy. Manipulating and experimenting with different materials – plasters, paints, plastics, fire and concrete allowed me to try and push the material to see what was possible.

ARCHITECTURAL REFERENCES Both Brazil’s tribos urbanos and Galeria do Rock were also main precedents for this project and helped in developing the desired atmopshere and programming of this project. I sought to make a space that embodies the energy of subculture music – punk, metal, rap, etc. A main galleria space is where formal commercial transactions can occur with programs of skate shops, bars, salons, record shops, etc. The large central space features a concert hall for events, music and assemblies. The tunnel underneath brings the project together as a joint Galeria e Amfiteatro space connected to local public transit – Terminal Barra Funda. 10

COURTYARD TOWER 3A DESIGN STUDIO // MONA EL KHAFIF // WINTER 2016 // INDIVIDUAL

The goal of this project was to develope a project which integrated various programming including residential, office and light-industrial production into the same building. The project is driven by the basic form of a courtyard building and a perimeter block. Backing onto a park at the end of The Esplanade (Toronto), part of the podium form is peeled back to reveal the interior courtyard, opening it up to the public for both physical and visual access from the park. The courtyard typology is copied and flipped vertically to act as a slab tower with cut-out voids. The building’s double skin folds and wraps around the interior programming and the voids to create interior courtyards. As a result these courtyards are both at once inside the building and separate from the interior programming. These courtyards are then greened to provide public park space for the residents and office occupants which can be used all year round. Programming in the podium consists primarily of public park space, ligh industrial production (a micro-brewery and coffee roasters) and retail. The slab tower primarily houses office spaces and residential programming. Adjacent to this programming are the cut out voids which act as parks for the offices and residents. At the podium level, the double facade is inhabitable as extra circulation while at the residential levels it is used as large balconies for the residents, providing views of the surrounding toronto cityscape.

DON RIVER RECREATION 2B DESIGN STUDIO // LOLA SHEPPARD // SPRING 2015 // INDIVIDUAL

Located in Toronto, adjacent to the Don River and along the Betty Sutherland Trail a series of elevated trails reconnects the previously fragmented existing trail systems. This allows Torontonians to view the local flora and fauna without causing disturbance, creates an extended, more complete trails system, and contributes towards the conservation efforts in the Don River Valley. A series of structures containing recreational and educational programming, located along the new trails act as points of interest along the river. The loose column and beam structure system allows for the buildings to expand or contract over time as users add or take away from the buildings. This allows the structures to become a sort of “DIY architecture. The form could change from day to day and from season to season. New programming could be added or for the building program to change completely. The project is extends over 2km along the Don River and ends with the two elevated trails which cross the two remediated, protected wetlands on either end.

GREEN CLASSROOM 2A ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN // TERRI BOAKE // FALL 2014 // COLLABORATION WITH FELIX YANG

For this project we divided a portable classroom into two learning spaces: one for learning about the environment and one for learning the regular school curriculum. The environmental room features an entirely glazed south facade to promote passive heating and daylighting, operable windows for ventilation, corrugated metal shading devices and skylights. The ocular form of the skylights and windows and brightly coloured walls reflects the project’s playfulness. The tiered, pitched roof increases the surface area for the water collection system which flushes the toilets, runs the sink, etc. The dividing wall between the spaces features a living wall allowing students to learn about food production. The second space, the education room, is a more traditional classroom setting where the typical curriculum classes can take place. This roof is covered with a flat photo voltaic array to power the mechanical lighting, heating and water heating. The windows are designed to meet passivhaus standards. Indigenous plants can be planted into the structure’s prefabricated base so the project can seamingly dissolve into any landscape and hide the services from the public view.

CAMBRIDGE COMMONS REC. 2A DESIGN STUDIO // ADRIAN BLACKWELL // FALL 2014 // INDIVIDUAL

For the 2A design studio final, students were asked to design a community centre for an undeveloped site located in Cambridge, Ontario. The design of my community centre revolves around the design and the sculpting of the roof plate and the floor plate. Both planes can be occupied in a variety of ways which promotes and allows for the interaction of various publics rather than entirely separating them. The two sculptural planes are supported by a loose column grid and the majority of the “walls are glass. This makes the building appear almost entirely transparent so that new landscape planes are brought into the foreground and it is possible for all groups to interact with one another. The programming in-between and on top was determined by the way in which the two planes interacted; how they curved, separated, reflected and joined together.

ATELIER ZUNDEL CRISTEA // CO-OP 3A INTERNSHIP // ATELIER ZUNDEL CRISTEA // SUMMER 2016 // PARIS, FRANCE

From May to August 2016 I had the opportunity to intern for Atelier Zundel Cristea in Paris, France. During this time I had the opportunity to contribute towards a number of projects including: a competition for a new metro station, an elderly residential home, a metro station in france and the new Atelier Zundel Cristea office. During my time with AZC, the office moved to a new location and I was able to work on some contributions towards the design of the new office space. This included creating exterior diagramatic drawings of the new building in relation to the surrounding context as well as creating renderings of the inteior spaces and indivudal interior elements. I primarily worked on V-ray, Sketchup, Illustrator, Photoshop, Autocad and Rhino during my time at AZC and my primary role was digital modeling.

A CHAIR FOR APO WHANG-OD 3B STRUCTURES // ELIZABETH ENGLISH // FALL 2016 // INDIVIDUAL

The design for the chair came from the idea of designing a chair for Apo Whang Od, a 98 year old Kalinga tattoo artist and farmer from the Philippines. People travel from all over the Philippines and the rest of the world to be tattooed by Whang Od, who to this day still uses traditional methods of tattooing. Whang Od often brings out her visitors/clients to the side of her rural farm house and tattoos them outside, on the ground. The design of the chair does not necessarily seek to change the way she tattoos but rather to compliment or aid it as she progresses into her older age. The chair is simple folding stool made of economic parts. Weighing in at only 34.21 N when fully assembled the chair is made to be easily transportable. The chair can be folded up easily and placed inside a bag made of an old coffee sack. Nearly every member of the chair has been burned/engraved by hand with some of the traditional Kalinga tribe tattoo designs. The chair sits low to the ground allowing for her to be INITIAL DESIGN SKETCHES in a similar position and have a similar leverage point as when she tattoos squatting on the ground. The stands can be raised and a wooden table surface can be added. This elevates the body part (arm, leg, etc.) of the person being tattooed off the ground which could provide more sanitrary conditions.

PROTEUS MOVES: BILLOW, BURGEON 3B DESIGN STUDIO // DERECK REVINGTON // FALL 2017 // INDIVIDUAL

Working iterativly, I produced a series of models/ sculptures which seek to embody the energy and forces of an underwater volcanic eurption. I experimented with many different techniques of production and many different materials plaster, glass, wire mesh, and fire - to try and find the best way to emulate and embody these forces in my sculture. These scultures were then photographed under different light conditions. Finally, both atmospheric and formal qualities were selected from various models for our 3B design studio project (page 5). I continued to sculpt further iterations throughout the project as I enjoyed trying to produce new formal and atmospheric qualities with different materials. Below is a brief exerpt of the writing I did in conjunction with these scultures. The water here is warmer; particulates and debris hang in the water, moving about, almost weightless with the motion of the fluid. A blooming cloud of debris and ash lies ahead, expanding, rising and falling continuously yet all at the same time ostensibly staying in its position. The bubbles glow with a warm, hypnotic yellow-orange colour like, “liquid flames [which can] be seen shining more brightly than summer’s noon-day sun,” (Bachelard, 1938, p.20 ) trapping ones’ gaze and offering an abrupt, stark, contrast from the dark, submarine environment...
