SELECTED WORKS 2014

1

Hi there! I'm Jon and I am a second year student at the University of Waterloo's School of Architecture. I imagine that this book is what you would refer to as my "2014 Selected Works". What this book does not show is my passion for Shotokan Karate and personal fitness. Nor does it show my desire to learn new languages, start my own clothing line, learn how to tattoo and travel the world. . My hope is that the work in this portfolio will be able to communicate who I am and what I love.With that being said I hope that you enjoy browsing this collection of my work as much as I enjoyed putting it together. Cheers!

TALL SHIPS COLLABORATIVE PROJECT WITH MICHAEL NUGENT FOR THE SSEF STEEL COMPETITION WINTER2014 // 1B // BUILDING CONSTRUCTION AND VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS The Great Lakes have had a huge impact on the culture of Southern Ontario. The depth of the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes allowed for tall ships to pass through for trading. This fostered an almost maritime culture along the coasts of the great lakes in what would otherwise be a landlocked part of the country. This structure would be located in Bluffer's Park in Scarborough. The high bluffs overlooking Lake Ontario, a marina just down the road and high winds and waves have even fostered a small surf community in this unique area. The structure forms a covered promenade which would be located on the flats just below the bluffs so as to provide a view of the bluffs above and the lake beyond while providing shelter for those using the trail.The steel cables would allow for some flexibility in the structure without totally compromising the strength of the span. When the winds blow off the lake, they would fill up the promenade's sails and the structure would wave in the wind creating an image reminiscent of the tall ships of the past.

MORE JUNK WINTER2014 // 1B // DESIGN STUDIO // INDIVIDUAL

COLLABORATIVE PROJECT WITH: ALEX LI, CALLI SELVARAJ

MINGOPOLOUS AND TARA

Working collectively with a group of peers, the aim of the More Junk project was to redevelop an existing vacant parking lot in Cambridge, Ontario as medium density housing. Our group was assigned the vacant parking lot in a courtyard between two large, old stone buildings that have been redeveloped as retail space. While nearby retail is a benefit, the large buildings and change in grade that drops the courtyard below street level casts a dark shadow on the lot for much of the winter. The land was raised and terraced row houses were built on the terraced land. This allows sunlight to reach each row unit and gives each unit a view of the Grand River just beyond. A series of paths and ramps that run between the row units separates the pedestrians from the vehicular traffic. This allows the rest of the courtyard to be transformed from a dusty parking lot to a park space. Both single storey units and double storey units makes thespace attractive for students, couples and even families who can park their cars and bicycles in the condensed parking lot.

ALOE VERA FARMING WINTER 2014 // 1B // VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS

// INDIVIDUAL

Grown in semi - desert climates, aloe vera is known for its unique medicinal qualities. The plant grows wild on the island of Curacao, located in the southern Caribbean Sea. In 1999 the Ecocity Projects Curaloe Plantation was opened. Approximately 100 000 specimens of aloe vera are grown at the plantation. Once they reach maturity, the bottom four leaves are cut off and harvested by the field workers. The leaves are cut off using a "chop chop" (a sharp shovel - like tool). They are then crated and brought to the plantation. During the harvest, the plantation can harvest 230 crates of aloe vera leaves per day. This allows them to produce 7500L of 100% pure organic aloe vera juice per week. The plantation exports approximately 60% of the juice while the rest is kept on the island for consumption or to produce other goods such as sun screen and body washes. For our assignment in our visual communications II class, we were to study and explain one piece of infrastructure using digital skills such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and Rhinocerous to create a series of infographics, drawings and renderings that would be put into a poster that could explain our piece of infrastructure. I chose to examine the growth, harvesting and production process of the aloe vera plant at the Curaloe plantation in Curacao.

HIMALAYAN HAVEN WINTER 2014 // 1B // ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN // INDIVIDUAL Location: Lhasa, Tibet (China) Latitude: 29.67 ° North Longitude: 91.13 ° Elevation: 3648m + Time Zone from Greenwich: 8 Due to its extremely high elevation, Tibet has a very unique climate. From October to March, temperatures dip below 0 °C. The average temperature during the winter months is around -2 °C in the valleys (where the cities are located) but can drop well below -10 °C at higher elevations. In the summer, temperatures don't generally rise above 15 °C. While there is not much snow in the valleys, at higher elevations temperatures can be much more frigid and travelers may have to be prepared for all four seasons in one day. This pavilion was designed to be built at a higher elevation in the mountains surrounding Lhasa (over 4000m). so as to provide a view of the surroiunding Tibetan Plateau. This structure is designed using local materials and is designed to passively withstand colder temperatures in the winter months while remaining comfortable in the summer months.

HOUSE FOR AN ARTIST FALL 2013 // 1A // DESIGN STUDIO // INDIVIDUAL The intention of this project was to design a house for an artist (a visual artist, a musician or a writer) for a chosen site on the land surrounding Taylor Lake, just outside of Cambridge, Ontario. Located on a steep ridge near the lake, this house was designed for a more unconventional artist: a graffiti artist. A series of tall concrete walls run parallel to the contour of the ridge. These walls are then joined together at seemingly random points to create the artists' residence. The house itself then becomes the canvas. The walls form a series of urban alley ways in the forest, ideal for a street artist/graffiti artist who requires large spaces to paint. Excluding the bathroom, there are no walls inside the house. The furniture is all mobile and easily moved. The artist then has full control over the exterior appearance of the house and the interior layout. An unconventional house for an unconventional artist.

ANOTHER LOFT: PREFABRICATED INFILL WINTER 2014 // 1B // Design Studio // INDIVIDUAL Recently, I have been very interested in prefabricated building. Prefabricated design already permeates a number of other industries and technologies. Being able to build something off site and transport it to the site to be quickly built up offers a number of new opportunities and advantages: Less site damage, shorter building times (on-site), quicker rebuilding in disaster areas, easily repaired buildings and further experimentation with prefabricated design. Located on a parking lot on St. Clair Ave. in Toronto, Ontario, the goal was to design a high density residential building. For this building a series of self-supporting prefabricated units are stacked on top of one another around a central core. Only 2/3 of the site is consumed by the building allowing for further expansion of the building as required. A light well between the units in the front of the building allows more sunlight to reach the units. creating a brighter, more pleasant atmosphere for residents in an otherwise very built-up urban environment.

Dojo Gates Summer 2014 // Personal Project During the summer of 2014, Team Canada Black Belt Institue consutruction of their new "Heritage Dojo". The Old Kedron Hall and surrounding grounds (six acres), located just north of Oshawa, Ontario was purchased as the new site for the karate school. It was brought to the attention of the owners that the property during its period of inactivity had become a popular location for late night parties. It soon became apparent that building a fence and gates would become necessary development for the future. I used this oppertunity to try and design a series of gates based on Okinawan vernacular architecture for the property which would fit with the renovated exterior/interior of the old hall while still providing the privacy desired by the school owners..
