The NMB Update The latest meeting of the Neighbourhood Management Board (NMB) discussed the following items: Residents Network Committee: After the success of the garage sale over the past few months, committee members have decided to expand their service offering. The committee are going to do a ‘Childrens’ Special Sale’ and do a range of ‘Pop-uP shops in the community.

Community Events: Feedback was given on the Winter Warmer and Christmas Extravganza: over all attendance and organisation made the events sucessful for the local community.

Power to Change: The consultation results with younger people and for the ‘Beers for Ideas’ was fed back to group. The next stage in the process to find people who are interested in getting involved and conduct skills audits to get the community business process started.

Children’s Centre news: Elaine Halford reported Sunflowers Nursery is now safe and free from the threat of closure. They would like to thank everyone for their involvement in helping to keep the nursery open.

Braunstone Blues: The Blues are starting a new group aimed at getting people active. They have invested in step tracking equipment to help people monitor their health and are looking to join forces with B-inspired sports team to help their new scheme.

Clockwise: Clockwise is now promoting a new savings scheme. The scheme encourages people to save as you borrow, in a hope people won’t have to borrow as much in the future. They are looking into a grants scheme for community groups which is hoping to come out later this year.

The Residents’ networks has started the new year off with a BANG. From reviewing last years’ activities and investigating what they can do this year to give more back to the community. It has been a busy few months for group.

So far, they have organised an Easter Egg Hunt for families on Braunstone Park on Saturday 24th of March 2018 from 11am to 2pm. We are all especially looking forward to the hunt trail around the park and helping to eat the chocolate of course…

They are also planning not one but two summer trips this year. ● Children's Trip to Plantasia confirmed for the 18th August 2018 ● Adult Trip is still waiting for facebook vote but the favourite seems to be Black Country Museum.

With the first signs of Spring popping up, bringing bright crocuses and lighter nights, it’s the time that most of us start to think about decluttering and clearing the way for the warmer weather to come. It can be a daunting task that seems to go on forever, but with my top ten tips to make decluttering easier, we can put the spring back into Spring Cleaning.

Make a list, putting the areas that are easiest to tackle, first. Once you start to see the results of your work you’ll be more motivated to carry on with the more difficult areas.

Tackle one area at a time, starting with the area that annoys you the most. Take your time, small bursts of activity throughout the day will reduce the chance that you’ll tire yourself out before you’re finished. : Stock up on cleaning products, these don’t have to be specialist products, washing up liquid and disinfectant are just as good as expensive cleaners.

Declutter: Use two bags, one for things that are rubbish, and one for recycling. Don’t forget that paper, cardboard, tins, magazines and catalogues can all be recycled through the orange bag collection.

Donate unwanted items to a friend or to charity. Although, not everything is accepted by charity shops, there are some great organisations online and in Braunstone that will take things like clothes or furniture. Or you could have a go at upcycling using some of the many videos available on Youtube for inspiration.

Get others to help you. There’s no reason why this should be a one-person job, maybe offer some cake or biscuits afterwards as an incentive for your helpers.

Start from the top down. Our smallest spaces are usually at the top of the house and it makes sense to only carry your unwanted things through the house once, rather than making several trips up and down stairs.

Don’t forget to check your medicine cupboard. Make sure that all over the counter remedies and prescription medication is in date, take anything that is past it’s best to your local pharmacy for disposal, never put them in the bin.

Don’t forget your toiletries and make up. Try to use up what you already have and throw away any products that have been open for longer than 12 months.

And finally, organise a treat for yourself when you’ve finished. Nothing keeps us motivated more than the idea of a treat at the end of all that hard work.

News from the Friends of Highway Spinney This is a quiet time for the Friends of Highway Spinney with no major events taking place. Did you walk through the Spinney during the snow in January? It was magical!

Plans are taking place to repair the main paths.

Dave Dorman, Landscape Team Supervisor in Neighbourhood and Environmental Services, Leicester City Council is going to give a quote.

There is also a big hole/puddle outside the Spinney at the entrance on Braunstone Lane opposite Beech Drive. I have sent an email and photos to Councillor Elaine Halford to ask for her help in getting this repaired.

In the Autumn we planted 100 crocus bulbs and lots of primulas at the Braunstone Cross Roads entrance so we should have a good display in the Spring. We have had a spate of graffiti but this has been painted over or erased. Unfortunately the Fire Brigade had to be called out on a Sunday morning to put out a smouldering fire resulting from a wheelie bin being set on fire by fallen tree trunks.

We have a success story. In February 2017 we reported to Braunstone Town Council that the Braunstone Lane sign at the Cross Roads was leaning at a dangerous angle and that we were concerned about the Health and Safety issue of this. Numerous emails were made between Leicester City Council and Blaby District Council who both said it was not their responsibility but as measure of goodwill and because it had been going on so long, Blaby District Council agreed to replace it! This finally took place on the 17th January 2018.

Have a look at it, it looks very smart!!

Lastly, we are changing the date and format of our AGM this year. This will now take place later in the year when the nights are lighter which we hope will encourage more people to attend. Look out for details in the next Braunstone Alert.

Police News The Braunstone Park and Rowley Fields Beat Team have been busy out on the streets offering crime prevention advice. We have had a number of theft from motor vehicles, most of them have been where PS 1272 Wayne property has been left CHAPMAN on view for thieves to see. We urge everyone to follow this simple advice.

Protect your vehicle. Don’t give thieves an easy ride. ● leave it on show expect it to go! Always remove valuables from your vehicle ● remove sat navs including the support cradle and cables. Wipe away any suction pad marks ● don’t leave tools in vans overnight ● make sure that doors are locked, windows are closed and keys are removed when you leave the car, even if it’s only for a moment One of our local priorities is still the nuisance motor bikes, mainly around the Braunstone Park area. Your help providing us with names of those causing this anti-social behaviour and where the motor bikes are stored is the key to putting a stop to this dangerous activity.

Leicester has been celebrating

women's rights as it has been 100 years from when women won the right to vote.

Leicester is now the proud home to

At a time when less than 70% of those who are eligible to do so vote in this country, it is easy to

forget how hard our forebears fought to gain us this right. On the centenary of The Representative of the People's Act the Alert has decided to look back and reflect on this milestone.

In 1872 the fight for women's suffrage became a national, and at times controversial, movement

with the formation of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS). Their aim was to unite smaller local groups under the cause of proving that women were equally as competent to vote as their male counterparts.

Some of the actions of the Suffragettes at the time were seen as contentious, such as hunger strikes,

chaining themselves to railings and one activist Emily Davison fatally stepping out in front of the King's

horse at the Epson Derby. One thing is for certain though; women across the globe had started to agree that enough was enough. They wanted to be seen as equals to men.

Although the cause never garnered universal support, backing for it greatly increased post WW1.

Political campaigns, including the call for women's suffrage, were suspended during the war years. Instead

many women took to throwing themselves into supporting the war effort and taking over some of the roles left vacant by young men heading off to the front.

In 1918, partly as a thank you for their efforts during this time, a coalition government passed The

Representation of the People's Act. This extended the right to vote to all men over the age of 21 and, for the

first time, opened it up to women over 30 who met minimum property requirements. Meaning that 40% of women were now eligible to vote and by November they could also legally stand for elections too. It took until 1928 until all women over the age of 21 could vote.

Many other countries followed suit, including America where women's suffrage was granted

federally in 1920. The campaign at home continued on and it took many more years before women had equal voting rights to men though. The 1918 act was seen as being the catalyst for the move to equality.

As we contemplate this milestone anniversary it is important to remember that even today some

women across the world face political inequality. That is why, 100 years on, the fight for women's suffrage and equality still rages.

Local slimmers from Braunstone are aiming to make an annual month-long healthy food festival the biggest and best yet.

‘Love it, cook it, share it’ is the motto of Slimming World’s Free Food February, so to mark the 2018 campaign members of the Blessed Sacrament Slimming World group will be creating a delicious healthy feast to enjoy together.

What would you do if you won the lottery?

I would give some money to my close family, save some for my children, donate some to b-Inspired and go travelling, Japan sounds nice.

What is your ideal holiday?

I quite like city breaks where there are lots of things to do and see.

From 28th January to 3rd March, slimmers will celebrate how they’ve all lost weight without hunger and discovered (or rediscovered) a passion for tasty, filling ‘Free’ food. The festival, which is in its fourth year, also marks the publication of Slimming World’s latest recipe book Little Book of Menus*.

What is the one thing you could change?

Being more open minded when meeting new people

The run up to the big feast and throughout Free Food February, the slimmers – who’ve lost 93.5 stone between them in January – will also be challenged to pass on their new-found love of healthy food to their family and friends in a bid to ‘love it, cook it, share it’ with the whole local community. The name of course is Talk time Which just suits me.

as held to remember the death of Lady Jane Grey on the 12th of February 1553. The Queen for 9 days who spent her whole reign in the tower of London before she was executed.

The Elephant Man: Leicester’s forgotten celebrity Leicester has no shortage of famous faces in its history. Gary Linaker, David and Richard Attenborough and, of course, Kasabian. There is however, one notable person from Leicester who is often overlooked: Joseph Merrick, also known as the elephant man. Although most closely associated with Whitechapel in London, Merrick was actually born in Leicester, in August of 1862.

Despite being born without any signs of abnormality, Merrick’s characteristic tumours began to develop from an early age, resulting in an extremely difficult childhood. By the age of seventeen, after the death of his mother and having been out right rejected by his farther, Merrick entered the Leicester Union Workhouse in December of 1879, his disability having progressed to the point where work was impossible.

After four years in the workhouse, Merrick contacted a freak show proprietor himself with an offer to be exhibited. In 1884, once this offer was accepted, Merrick was taken on a short tour of the midlands before being moved to Whitechapel and placed on display. A popular attraction, he eventually came to the attention of Dr Frederick Treves, who offered to examine and photograph Merrick to satisfy his medical curiosity.

This arrangement eventually came to an end and Merrick was encouraged to go on tour in Europe. The tour something of a disaster for Merrick, who eventually found himself robbed and left for dead somewhere in Belgium.

Alone and penniless, Merrick somehow managed to make his way back to London, where he was once again taken in by Dr Treves and lived out the rest of his life in The London Hospital in Whitechapel, dying at the age of 27 on the 11th April 1890.

Great Money Saving Healthy Recipes Ingredients: 1 large pineapple 600ml of milk 250g sugar Method: 1) Boil the milk and sugar. Leave to cool to room temperature and then store in the fridge until needed.

2) Peel and chop the pineapple in fine shreds and then stir into the milk and sugar mixture.

3) Once mixed thoroughly, transfer to a freezer proof tub and pop in the freezer.

4) Remove the sherbet mixture from the freezer after 30 minutes and stir well to encourage the mixture to remain smooth as it freezes.

5) Pop back it in the freezer and repeat step 4 every 30 minutes until ice crystals form and it feels slushy when you stir it.

6) Serve with strawberries or any other fruit you fancy. Will keep in the freezer for up to three days
