EODIS is set to continue its scheduled Own Controlled Network (OCN) service linking Europe and the USA. The current service, providing three full rotations each week, has been confirmed throughout 2021. With transatlantic air freight capacity continuing to be tight and forecasted to remain so well into 2021, GEODIS is contracting freighters to operate within its OCN as part of its global AirDirect service offering. The 2021 schedule is confirmed between Amsterdam Schiphol and Chicago O’Hare with three departures and three return flights a week. Wide network THE UK National Audit Office (NAO) has released a report stating that although government departments have made progress in recent months implementing the changes required to systems, infrastructure and resources to manage the border at the end of the post-EU Exit transition period, it is still likely that widespread disruption will occur from January 1 2021. The NAO has highlighted that COVID-19 has exacerbated delays in government’s preparations for the crucial date and that significant risks remain, particularly in relation to implementing the Northern Ireland Protocol and trader readiness more generally. “The 1 January deadline is unlike any previous EU Exit deadline; significant changes at the border will take place and government must be ready,” Gareth Davies, the head of the NAO has stressed. “Disruption is likely and government will need to respond quickly to minimise the impact, a situation made all the more challenging by the COVID-19 pandemic.” Departments have made progress towards implementing the systems, infrastructure and resources required to operate the border in relation to Great Britain at “minimum operating capability” by January 1 2021 and are reasonably confident most will be ready, but timetables are tight. The ability for traders to move goods under transit arrangements is a key element of the government’s plans but some elements will be challenging to deliver in their entirety.

BIFA members Commenting on the report, Robert Keen, director general of the British International Freight Association (BIFA) has commented that the NAO assessment corresponds with what it is hearing from its members, which believe that it will take some time for a fully functioning border to be put in place. “BIFA anticipates that the businesses which use its members’ freight forwarding and logistics services to conduct cross-border trade between the EU and the UK will feel the impact of a sub-optimal border to varying degrees,” commented Keen. “With less than two months to go to the end of the transition period, BIFA members are still waiting for the government to provide complete information and clarity on the processes by which cross-border trade will be conducted at the end of the year.”

The cargo carrier is offering discounted rates to local Qatari perfume manufacturers to export to international markets. Through this initiative, the airline will help boost exports and sales of locally manufactured perfumes to international markets and provide opportunities for Qatari exporters to expand their business activities through business to consumer channels. Local manufacturers, through the airline’s approved network of courier companies, will have access to Qatar Airways’ extensive global network and modern fleet to transport their products. Integrated Service Solution teams up with Chapman Freeborn for Qatar project

WFS PARIS PHARMA CENTRE READY FOR COVID VACCINES W

orldwide Flight Services’ (WFS) Pharma Centre at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport has been awarded Good Distribution Practice (GDP) certification, reinforcing its credentials to support global air cargo shipments of COVID-19 vaccines and other pharmaceutical and medical equipment shipments requiring compliant temperature-controlled storage and handling. At the start of 2020 the centre, part of a multi-million Euro investment by WFS in global pharmaceutical handling facilities, also achieved IATA CEIV Pharma certification. The GDP audit and certification process by independent auditing specialists TÜV confirmed the facility’s temperature management capabilities and assessed and approved WFS’ pharma policy, including its internal auditing procedures, risk assessment and corrective/preventive measures, and critical supplier list. “As the world’s largest air cargo handler, WFS is already very actively involved in the safe and compliant handling of pharmaceutical shipments and medical devices across our international network,” explained Yann Favre, manager of pharma at the WFS Center in Paris. “Gaining certifications for both IATA CEIV and GDP for our Pharma Centre in Paris means we have achieved the highest respective global standards recognised by the air cargo and pharmaceutical industries. “This supports our objective to be the world’s leading air cargo handler for pharma shipments in terms of compliance and our abliity to safeguard product integrity,” he said.

Pharma specialists WFS’ trained and accredited team of pharma specialists at Paris CDG also use the company’s fleet of temperature-control trucks, trailer and dollies to ensure the efficacy of pharma cargoes from aircraft to warehouse and vice versa.

Hermes Logistics Technologies teams up with dnata and IT University of Copenhagen

HERMES Logistics Technologies (HLT) has announced they are working with researchers at the IT University of Copenhagen (ITU), Denmark, and dnata Australia to explore new machine learning models aimed at delivering predictive business analytics. The Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms will run data from dnata Australia’s new Hermes Digital Ecosystem, which has a full data lake infrastructure that captures and stores all of dnata’s Hermes New Generation Business Intelligence events. The machine learning models will enable dnata to make predictive business process decisions providing key insights on efficiencies, costs and new services. “Machine learning is part of HLT’s

COVID insecurities threaten air cargo’s slow recovery AS many countries head in to a second lockdown in a bid to curb the second wave of COVID-19, questions loom of the impact this will have on the global air cargo market. The market has maintained a slow, six-month recovery in October but the industry will be waiting cautiously to see if a sudden fall in demand in the last week of the month signals a new hiatus in consumer spending amidst uncertainties caused by the second wave of coronavirus. The latest weekly and monthly data for October from analysts CLIVE Data Services and TAC Index shows a sustained improvement in volumes and rates, and a record ‘dynamic load factor’, based on both the volume and weight perspectives of cargo flown and capacity available, of 72% in the week of 19-25 October. This further reduced the year-on-year decline in volumes to just -13% versus October 2019 from a peak of -37% at the start of Q2 2020. However, the 3% month-on-month growth in volumes for the last four weeks of October, and double-digit rate increases year-on-year, may start to level out if consumer concerns over public health and job security result in them ‘keeping their wallets closed’ and lower demand for air cargo capacity. “At a high level, the air cargo market can look at October’s performance data and feel reassured the recovery back to pre-COVID levels is continuing,” Niall van de Wouw, managing director of CLIVE Data Services commented. “However, there will also be some companies looking over their shoulders at the 3% drop in demand in the last week of the month and wondering if the uncertainties caused by the second wave of the virus are about to stop that recovery in its tracks. We will know more once we see the November numbers but the 1.5% drop in the dynamic load factor in the usually strong last week of the month is unusual and raises question marks over demand in the coming weeks.”

Moscow Cargo provided technical support to the organisers of the seventh Formula 1 Russian Grand Prix, which took place in Sochi in September IN preparation for the Formula 1 Russian Grand Prix 2020 international event, AirBridgeCargo delivered to Sochi airport special equipment from Moscow Cargo LLC for servicing aircraft for forwarder client Kuehne + Nagel. With the help of 10- and 20-foot carts provided by Moscow Cargo, the specialists managed to optimise the process of loading and unloading from the aircraft of the race cars for the teams participating in the competition, escort vehicles and additional equipment with a total weight of more than 800 tonnes. The general director of Kuehne + Nagel thanked

the staff of Moscow Cargo for their help in ensuring successful logistics support of the project, noting the professionalism, responsibility, conscientious attitude to work and the contribution of the staff of Moscow Cargo in solving complex problems when organising the lease of loading and unloading equipment. There were special words of gratitude addressed to the employees of the Department for work with clients, including the head of the department Mikhail Kirillov and the chief specialist Denis Azarov, for the individual approach to the task and the prompt solution of all issues.

SPICEJET, India’s biggest air cargo operator, added Moscow to its fast growing international cargo network in the summer. The airline operated its maiden cargo flight from Hyderabad to Moscow carrying over 16 tonnes of pharma supplies. SpiceJet deployed its Boeing 737 freighter aircraft for this cargo flight to Domodedovo Airport. By the summer, SpiceJet had transported over 15,700 tonnes of cargo on close to 2,234 flights since the nation-wide lockdown began. Ajay Singh, chairman and managing director, SpiceJet, said: “Moscow is the latest addition to our fast expanding cargo network which spans over 35 international destinations. We have added six new international destinations in the last ten days. Since the lockdown began, SpiceJet has operated more than 2,200 cargo flights and has carried around 15,700 tonnes of cargo.”

SpiceJet has operated special cargo flights to and from regional destinations, including Ukraine. SpiceJet operated India’s first cargo-on-seat flight on April 7 carrying vital supplies in passenger cabin and belly space. Since then, the airline has been regularly deploying its B737 and Q400 passenger aircraft to carry cargo in the passenger cabin. SpiceXpress, SpiceJet’s dedicated cargo arm, has been regularly transporting surgical supplies, sanitizers, face masks, coronavirus rapid test kits, IR thermometers etc. and providing doorstep deliveries of essential supplies, medicines and medical equipment to various cities in India. The airline has helped Indian farmers maintain continuity of their supply chains by operating special cargo flights to take farm produce, fresh fruits and vegetables to domestic and international destinations.

SpiceJet adds Russia to its foreign cargo network

AIRBRIDGECARGO Airlines (ABC) transported a cargo of two Andalusian stud horses and one Orlov Trotter horse back to their Russian homes after a four- year tour last month. The horses, which weighed over 1,500 kg in total, were comfortably positioned in a special horse container, which met all IATA LAR container requirements. With strict COVID-19 restrictions being in place in China, the ABC team managed to organise transportation without a groom, as would normally be the case with live animal delivery. The horses arrived safely at Sheremetyevo International Airport. “We have always been committed to high-quality services for live animal transport. With additional restrictions, transportation without grooms seemed like an impossible task; however we face difficulties head-on and upon thorough fine-tuning of all the stages, the transportation has been accomplished,” said Petr Novozhenov, regional director, Russia and CIS of AirBridgeCargo Airlines. “Thanks to dedication and experience of our sales team in the region who are accustomed to multitasking and challenging projects, the

horses got first-class treatment”. Sheremetyevo gets ready for a white Christmas SHEREMETYEVO International Airport has switched to its autumn-winter flight schedule, which will be in effect until March 27, 2021. During the winter navigation period, regular flights from Sheremetyevo will operate on 74 routes - 60 domestic and 14 international. During the autumn-winter season, Sheremetyevo’s base carrier, Aeroflot, will continue to operate flights on the international routes currently open to London, Male, Seoul, Istanbul, Antalya, Cairo, Dubai, Belgrade, Geneva, Nur-Sultan, Bishkek and Minsk, and regular flights from Sheremetyevo to Tokyo will resume during winter navigation. In addition, Nordwind Airlines and Royal Flight will begin flights to Cayo Coco, Santa Clara and Goa during the new season. Sheremetyevo Airport has carried out a set of measures

to prepare the airfield and equipment for the upcoming autumn-winter period. More than 200 special vehicles and machinery will be used to sustainably support takeoff and landing operations and maintain the airfield complex in operational condition in any weather. These include trailed and self-propelled plough and brush equipment, distributors of liquid and granular deicing agents, rotary milling snow blowers, tractors and bulldozers for airfield operations, and rescue vehicles and equipment. More than 430 pieces of equipment will be used for ground handling of aircraft, including 40 deicing machines and 71 airfield heaters. Sheremetyevo has obtained metrological certification of the devices for measuring the friction co-efficient for the safe operation of the airfield during

the autumn-winter period, and a minimum level of supply of deicing reagents was established to prevent ice formation on the artificial surfaces of the airfield. A set of measures was carried out to inspect the drainage infrastructure and detect any defects in the airfield’s artificial surfaces. Buildings and structures, in-terminal equipment of JSC Sheremetyevo International Airport, engineering networks and communications have also been prepared for winter operation. The technical, sanitary and fire-safety conditions of mechanical and utility rooms has been inspected, and engineering and technical-services employees have been trained and certified under the preparation programmes for winter operations.

HEAVY CARGO, Plain sailing for ANTONOV LIGHT WORK

AIRBRIDGECARGO Airlines, part of Volga-Dnepr, has masterminded delivery of 16m long busher equipment together with TVS SCS/Pan Asia Logistics Germany onboard a Boeing 747-8F from Frankfurt to Zhengzhou, China. The super-long cargo, weighing almost 16 tonnes, is meant to bolster a power transmission project in China. The Boeing 747-8F’s unique loading feature allowed for single-piece transportation without equipment’s dismantling which sped up the loading procedures, eliminated the risks and stimulated easyto-handle installation process on-site. “Every time we are entrusted to ship out-of-gauge cargo we feel privileged for gaining unique competences from our Volga-Dnepr colleagues as well as building a dedicated

DEUGRO Air Chartering completed the transport of critical oversized compressor equipment from Germany to the USA by an AN-124 freighter aircraft. Together with deugro Houston, deugro Air Chartering executed the move. Initially planned for movement by sea, due to the impact of the COVID19 pandemic, the operation was delayed by several months. To maintain the delivery and installation schedule, the compressor needed to be delivered to the job site immediately after fabrication. “deugro’s experts identified an air charter solution using an AN-124 to trans-

port the cargo. This allowed flexibility to plan the flight date in accordance with the cargo readiness date, including nominating the airport of destination closest to the production site,” said Tobias Schultz, executive vice president, deugro group. Pavel Kuznetsov, head of air chartering for deugro, said: “For this project, we were able to secure the AN-124 based on an empty ferry leg. This allowed us to reduce the charter price for our client by about 20%, which is a significant cost reduction if you are talking about a full charter on the world’s second-largest cargo aircraft.”

ANTONOV Airlines flexed its muscles as it completed the transportation of three high-tech AC75 class racing yachts. Each consignment had a total weight of 20 tonnes, which included the 22.8 m long, 4.9 m wide yachts and important support equipment. The yachts, which are nicknamed ‘flying’ yachts due to the fact they rise out of the water on hydrofoils, can reach speeds of up to 50 knots (92.6 kph). They were safely carried by AN-124-100 Ruslan aircraft from Italy, the UK and the US, to Auckland, New Zealand in preparation for the 2021 America’s Cup race. “Our engineers worked closely with the teams that organised the air shipment of these unique yachts to develop a safe loading and stowage system for the long

journeys to New Zealand,” Andriy Blagovisniy, commercial director of ANTONOV Airlines commented. “The AN-124 Ruslan, which has a volume of cargo cabin up to 700 cubic metres, was the ideal aircraft for the job.” The first yacht was transported from

Providence, Rhode Island, USA for the American Magic team, with the second travelling from London Stansted Airport, for the British Ineos Team UK, and the third departing Milan Bergamo Airport, Italy for the Italian Luna Rossa team. All three journeys took a total of three days.

Life and work has taken Mathilde de Rocquigny, CargoAi CCO, to Mexico, Portugal, France, the UK, Ireland, Japan and now Singapore but her heart remains in air cargo

ingapore is always a hive of activity. It attracts talented people looking for innovation and transformation and brings them together. And it serves our cargo industry excellently. For the last three weeks, I’ve been meeting people whose shared ambition is to make their mark on air cargo by throwing themselves – body and soul – into the industry’s digital transformation, which, in their eyes, is no longer something disruptive. And it seems that these talents have something else in common: they all decided to join the other equally talented members of CargoAi, the SaaS application that offers air cargo digital solutions to freight forwarders, airlines and GSAs and allows users to manage the entire air cargo booking process via a single tool.

o I’m back in Singapore once more – this time, to meet Mathilde, an enthusiastic leader in the airlines and airports industry. Mathilde knows where she’s going. And it isn’t chance that led her to a brilliant career in our industry. Mathilde chose it: “I began my career in 2000 at Air France’s passenger business in the Southern Europe market. I have been working for airlines and airports since then, switching from air cargo to passenger business and airports.” And so, while Mathilde is French, she’s also a citizen of the world, she is an international manager. “I’ve lived and worked in many countries: Mexico, Portugal, France, the UK, Ireland, Japan and now Singapore, and I’ve seized opportunities in multicultural environments, including in air cargo and passenger business.”

his extremely charismatic woman has a taste for a challenge – and an even stronger taste for cargo: “I’ve always thought that cargo was the most fascinating part of the airline business. To me, air cargo means having access to the world’s goods production – a major part of the economy. Though it accounts for less than 5% of global goods transportation, those goods are the most important and valuable in the world, which means finding aircraft capacity to ship them is a challenge.” And she’s spent over 20 years working in our industry. “I used to work on

Throughout her career, she has tested the added value that digital technology can bring to the human side of the business: “I have always had to adapt processes and implement new IT solutions to enhance our performance in forecasting, sales and negotiations.” Mathilde adds: “Data and booking information are valuable. They provide accurate visibility on the business and lead to revenue optimisation. “With access to data, it’s possible to forecast and then, planning new developments will make air cargo stronger.”

nd although the crisis we are currently living through is wreaking havoc, Mathilde has an amazing capacity for resilience, allowing her to see today’s times as an unmissable opportunity for us to transform. “The direct negative impact of this unprecedented crisis is the lack of capacity due to the reduction in passenger flights and stronger demand driven by pharma and e-commerce. The positive impacts are a better load factor on full freighters and an improvement in unit revenue and profitability. This shortage of capacity will make freight forwarders think differently about their capacity purchasing process.” And without a doubt, this is what makes CargoAi a “game-changer for both airlines and freight forwarders.” As Mathilde concludes, “Having all airlines’ cargo flights displayed on our booking solution is something that’s never been seen before, and this will be the key feature of our success.”
