Deb Ritchie Retires

D

aughter, wife, mother, grandmother, friend, mentor, confidant, ASID member, chapter administrator extraordinaire! Whatever role Deb Ritchie holds or has held in her life, it’s memorable. When Deb joined the Arizona North Chapter Board of ASID as Director-at-Large in 2013, our chapter was embarking on change. With her industry experience and understanding of our organization, it was evident we could benefit from Deb’s expertise and knowledge in a more permanent role. It was a happy day when Deb transitioned from her Board position to our Chapter Administrator, and we quickly realized this chapter was in very capable hands. It is our pleasure and privilege to pay tribute to her years of dedication and loyalty. From day one, Deb hit the ground running and worked tirelessly to ensure our coveted chapter history and records were organized and accessible, laying the foundation for success for future chapter boards and committees. On the front line, Deb is always available to assist and support any member or affiliate in need; her priority has always been the success of our membership. She has been instrumental in ensuring the Arizona North Chapter is forefront in our industry and recognized for leadership, growth, and innovation throughout the ASID organization. Deb has retired as our chapter administrator to free up precious time to spend with her grandsons. We congratulate Deb on a wonderful career with Arizona North Chapter of ASID and wish her all our best as she creates the best of memories. It has been our pleasure to know you and to work with you, Deb Ritchie. We are deeply and eternally grateful for all you have given. 2

s I prepared for my one-year term as President of ASID Arizona North Chapter, I expected some lingering challenges with Covid-19. I didn’t expect having to hire and rehire another chapter administrator nor did I expect to deal with changes in directors as well, but as president you pick up the pieces and you get it done. I have strived to create consistency within the chapter and bring value to our members even during uncertain times through live and virtual events. Thanks to everyone who has made that happen this year. To the board members who have worked so hard putting in their time and energy giving back to the design community-thank you so much for your dedication to the chapter. To the sponsors, designers, students and industry partners-thank you for your continued support of the ASID Arizona North Chapter, it means so much to me. It has been an honor being your president. Thank you for giving me the opportunity. It has been a learning experience and a joyful one for which I am forever grateful. My last chapter meeting, the Gratitude Party was all about being thankful for our volunteers, our designers, our industry partners and our sponsors. It was all about giving back to you with a special presentation by Donny Starkins about Mindfulness’ 101, being present-and learning how to have a work/life balance which you know as creatives is a challenge, lol. We had a very brief guided meditation which is a great and healthy way to de-stress. I hope you found it valuable. As I pass the baton over to Jennifer Biffer, I know the chapter will be in good hands and she will get it done! I wish Jennifer and the new 2021-2022 board good luck. We will continue to move forward as a chapter enhancing and bringing unity within the design community.

With Deep Gratitude,

Paddy

Supporting our values

I

am so honored to be your Arizona North Chapter 2021-2022 president! ASID’s core values are design excellence, thoughtful leadership, advocacy, and being community driven. This past month I was tasked with creating a strategic plan for our chapter that would support these values. The two primary goals for this term are advancing the value of the interior design profession and advocating for the value the interior design profession brings to the design of humancentered environments. It is my mission to bring value to our membership through educational events, mentorship programs, volunteer opportunities, increasing recognition for our members and our association, and creating a true sense of community by strengthening strategic alliances with our industry partners as well as our community. To accomplish these goals, I am calling on you, the membership, to help me and the incoming board make this happen. We have several opportunities for you to participate and look forward to collaborating with you.

Whether it’s in your home, office, or retail space, the rules and limitations of mass-produced wallcoverings are a thing of the past! The look, feel, and messaging possible with Digital Wallcoverings can bring new design opportunities to every project!

CHAPTER MEETING

T

he Las Vegas Winter Market, usually held in January, was rescheduled for April 11th – 15th this year due to travel restrictions. Jennifer Biffer, ASID (our incoming president) and Susan Solliday, ASID (past president) were on the scene to scout out the latest in furniture, fixtures, and décor. They shared their findings with us at our May chapter meeting, hosted by Villagio Tile at their beautiful Scottsdale showroom. A few of the things we learned…both the etagere and shagreen are experiencing a resurgence; in furniture, woven materials and sculpted rattan are popular; and handcrafted items, natural textures, the color purple, and the fiddle-leaf fig are all very hot right now! In addition to the market review, Garrett Tidwell,Villagio Sales & Design Associate, gave an informative presentation on current trends in tile, highlighting new materials in their showroom. While learning about the hottest trends and products, guests enjoyed a spread of delicious food and drink. Thank you to Doug Adamson, Garrett, and the rest of the Villagio Tile staff for welcoming us into their showroom and being such gracious hosts!

ur June chapter meeting was hosted by Solstice Stone in their fabulous new Scottsdale showroom and design center. The CEU presentation was full of interesting facts about the characteristics of wine and natural stone and the correlation between the two. Attendees participated in a wine tasting session and snacked on delightful charcuterie cones and other tasty treats. We learned how mineral composition affects the characteristics of natural stone as a building material, that limestone-rich soil produces excellent grapes for wine making, and other fascinating facts. What a fun way to earn your continuing education units! Thank you to Nicole Burke, Jake Burke,Vance Leninger, and the entire Solstice Stone team for providing a flavorful and engaging evening!

his year’s ASID Leadership Training was held in August. The Arizona North Chapter was selected to talk about our signature Interior Designer for Hire (IDFH) program. Karen Barnes, Finance Director 2017-19, presented our exciting annual fundraiser program virtually. ASID members can access the video presentation in https://learn. asid.org/products/virtual-clc-2021. The title is “Fundraising Grand Slam: Mission, Money, and Volunteers (Arizona North)”. Please register to view the content. We are taking time this year to make our great program even better. Watch for some exciting information for next year. We are excited to be bringing back Real World Design Week in February 2022. Since classes were online last year, we felt it was a priority to bring a valuable opportunity to our KAREN BARNES, Industry Partner Representative and owner of student membership as well as our professional members. This The Elegant Window, presenting the IDFH Program at the National program allows students to shadow a designer or an IP for a ASID Leadership Training in August 2021 day and learn what the business of design is really about. It is a great way for students to experience real life situations but also for showrooms and our seasoned designers to meet students and possibly source future hires. Summer Virtual Roundtables

A

t the June Roundtable the special guest was Debra May Himes, ASID, past president and residential designer with over 40 years of experience. In 1975, she graduated with her Interior Architecture degree and started her career working at a retail furniture store. In 1997, she won her first award for a custom piece of furniture. In 2000, Debra participated in a showhouse and designed an iron underlit onyx sink pedestal that she named after her two sons, Johnathon and David. It was a hit and she began selling them nationwide. In 2006, she developed custom drapery finials in iron and

glass with Helsler Brothers that won an APEX National award. Currently, Debra is designing hospitality grade fabric for upholstery and drapery. She has over sixty designs in her collection which are all made in North Carolina where she has better quality control. Her product development started a couple of years ago. At first, she was hand drawing and coloring, but now she uses the Procreate software where she has many choices in brush sizes. As Barbara Kaplan stated, “these fabrics are fabulous and beautiful.” Customization is available with Sherwin-Williams® color matching as well. Debra’s passion has always been fabric

and art. She says, “pattern is like jewelry.” As a senior designer, Debra recommends emerging professionals find their passion, figure out what sets them apart and makes them different, and maximize what they can bring to the table as a designer.

T

he August Roundtable featured Keith Stanton, CHID, ASID, past president of ASID Arizona North Chapter and current Director for Design Development for Thoma Holec Design. Keith is a recognized expert for his work in senior living and long-term care and is one of only 12 certified healthcare interior designers in the United States. He was appointed the chair of ASID’s Adaptive Living Task Force. This task force is studying design and construction issues related to the pandemic and how it will change the future of design. In his presentation, he mentioned grievances and how future interior designers will be affected by the pandemic and how human beings' lives are going to change. With the Covid-19 Delta variant, we must continue to use best practices with proper hygiene. A big boomer topic is the wellness room which is being developed in senior living communities. Biophilic walls, separators and social distance dividers, along with farm-to-table gardens are all changes being made as a result of Covid-19.

nnovative Wine Cellar Designs owner, Sandy Horwitz, along with Rocky Rainford welcomed our July 2021 Donuts & Dialogue Drive Thru audience on a virtual tour of their showroom via Zoom. The tour highlighted the many different wine cellar systems available as displayed in the Innovative Wine Cellar Designs showroom located in Scottsdale at 8340 E Raintree Dr Suite B9. We learned the 5 elements to building a wine cellar which include: Racking, Lighting, Refrigeration, Glass & New Build vs Remodel. Sandy and Rocky demonstrated numerous options and innovations in wine storage systems and have a team of experts ready to create a unique wine storage experience for all levels of budget and customizability. They are true masters at designing and installing the right system to suit the individual needs and requirements of each client. Each system has its own list of material, finish, size, function and options depending upon racking systems, bottle types, and amount of storage desired. With specialty vignette designs that include “floating bottles”, specialty bottle display, and lighting color programmability the showroom is truly an experience to enjoy. The latest addition to the showroom is an anodized aluminum racking system with light boxes and specialty bottle display. If industrial is your style, this system meets the visual impact expected along with the ability to house all sizes and types of bottles including champagne and magnums. Innovative Wine Cellar Designs is also able to accommodate those who prefer the traditional look of a wood racking systems, which they are able to custom stain to your desired color. The big surprise of the morning was the news that they also build custom saunas available with either the dry infrared heating system or steam heating option.

Donuts & Dialogue September 2021: Image Craft

W

e welcomed an enthusiastic crowd to our much anticipated inperson Donuts & Dialogue meeting on September 10th, hosted by Image Craft at their showroom and manufacturing facility located at 3401 E Broadway Road in Phoenix. Doug Olsen, Image Craft founder and owner, shared inspirational stories, company history, and business insights that have enabled Image Craft to navigate a tumultuous 42 years of business. Doug emerged from the humble beginnings of processing photos in his closet, to hosting our meeting in his company owned 60,000 sf facility and fully appointed showroom. The Image Craft of today is a true success story resulting from hard work, vision, business savvy and commitment. Image Craft offers a diverse array of high tier graphics and printing services for a wide range of markets such as signage and promotional graphics for the Phoenix Suns and Arizona Diamondbacks to customizable art for any business or residence. They support all levels of business from small independent designers and firms to high profile clients including Intel ®, American Airlines®, Discount Tire®, Ping, Banner Health®, Heard Museum, Barrett-Jackson®, ASU ®, Grand Canyon University, SRP ®, and a host of others. Doug demonstrated to his audience that developing, nurturing, and maintaining success is not easy and presents itself in many forms. A few key take-aways gleaned from Doug’s presentation include: • Company culture and values are critical to success • Be ready for opportunity and be decisive when presented with an opportunity • Understand your business financial data and ratios (don’t let your emotions takeover business decisions) • Businesses are dynamic, they either grow or shrink. Static is an illusion. • Stay flexible and open minded. The best opportunities are the ones the competition doesn’t have. • Relationships are key. We are lucky!

H

ow lucky were we to get all dressed up and celebrate the 2021 Design Excellence Awards, in-person and all together? Held at the gorgeous, newly renovated Renaissance in downtown Phoenix, our local design elite gathered for an evening of community and celebration. With over 90 awards given, it never ceases to amaze me the level of talent our community brings to the table every year. I got to mix and mingle LAUREN STURMAN Modern Luxury with so many of you, but my personal table included the familiar faces of Jeni Dettaglio Group Publisher from Dettaglio Design and Katherine Mueller from CeTerra Accents and Design - both big winners throughout the evening. Sitting there in the audience I got to appreciate not only being in person with everyone, but the vast and phenomenal talent that the people in the room embodied. I loved watching both the work displayed on the big screens, as well as the thoughtful speeches from all the winners. Congratulations to this past year’s President, Paddy Rasmussen, for staging an incredible evening that went off without a hitch. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with her over this past year and I know that the organization is stronger because of her. I’m looking forward to working with Jennifer Biffer (one of the big winners of the evening) as she takes the helm of this chapter for the next year. As the proud, exclusive media GET READY FOR THE HOLIDAYS WITH OUR sponsor of this ASID chapter, we INVENTORY CLEARANCE SALE! are excited to once again feature UP TO 60% OFF SELECT RED TAG ITEMS! the winning designs from the award show. You can find them beautifully illustrated in this publication (as well as in the Fall issue of Interiors Scottsdale) as we recap and celebrate the evening’s best over the past year. Thank you once more for letting Modern Luxury be your partner, and congratulations to all of the evening’s winners!

CeTerra Accents & Interiors

I

n 2011, Katherine Mueller, ASID, purchased CeTerra Accents & Interiors from the original owner and continues to offer designers and clients the organic contemporary style which relates so well to Arizona. Her vision was to diversify the successful showroom’s inventory, so she began buying from markets across the country broadening her product lines to include one-of a-kind large scale furniture and hand-made items from local artists. This necessitated an expansion of their showroom and design space. In the future, CeTerra would like to be a go-to source for American-made custom pieces. Their staff can work with local artists to help you and your clients take the vision to reality. Come by and meet CeTerra’s knowledgeable staff and see the wonderful creations they have available.

CENTRAL ARIZONA SUPPLY

G

rowing up stocking shelves at Central Arizona Supply with his siblings, Jeremy Smith learned the business from the ground up. Over the course of 20 years, he has helped drive Central Arizona Supply – Arizona’s largest family owned and operated plumbing, appliance, lighting and decorative hardware company. In 2019, Jeremy spearheaded the company’s expansion into appliances, signing deals with major global brands such as Sub-Zero®, Wolf ®, Miele and Monogram to boutique, high quality collections like BlueStar ®, Ilve and Bertazzoni. This added a level of prestige to their thoughtfully curated showrooms and further solidified their reputation as an expert and leading supplier for residential and commercial projects. At the root of his business spirit, Jeremy works to honor the dream of the Smith brothers who founded the company five decades ago with the vision of being a pillar in our industry through sincere and personalized service. Today, Jeremy and his siblings are the next generation of Smiths leading Central Arizona Supply’s 50-year legacy of being the go-to source for interior designers, contractors, builders, plumbers and homeowners.

PELLA

®

S

ammy Song, the owner and CEO of Pella® Windows & Doors Mountain West, was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a BA in Accounting. His career with Pella began as an intern in the summer of 2003 where he witnessed firsthand Pella’s reputation for being a world-class organization built on a foundation of integrity, superior products, great customer service and great people. It was immediately clear that Pella was the perfect fit and Sammy joined Pella Corporation full time in March of 2004 after graduating and passing the CPA exam. Sammy held several positions on the Pella Corporate Finance team over the course of his career including roles in Cost Accounting, Financial Reporting, Internal Audit, Corporate Taxation, and Treasury. In 2007, Sammy relocated to Arizona to join the leadership team of the local Pella subsidiary as the Branch Controller, which then progressed to a Senior Financial Manager role responsible for the growth and financial oversight of the Pella Sales Subsidiary network across North America. In 2014 Sammy purchased the Pella Mountain West branch with his business partner Don Foster, achieving his biggest long-term professional goal yet. Pella Mountain West is headquartered in Gilbert, Arizona and employs more than 140 people with 8 showroom locations serving Arizona, Idaho, Wyoming and Utah. Stop into the Scottsdale or Gilbert showroom to discover what makes Pella different.

SCOTTSDALE DESIGN DISTRICT

I

n the Spring of 2005, the showrooms of the Arizona Design Center split into two properties. The companies that remained at 68th Street and Thomas Road in Scottsdale became known as the Scottsdale Design District, with “68” in its logo to signify the address, now approaching 25 years at the same location. Today, seventeen to-the-trade showrooms offer products from more than 500 manufacturers, artisans, and importers. Fine furniture, fabrics, lighting, custom upholstery, wall covering, carpet, rugs, original art, framing, tile, wood, stone, window covering, kitchen and bath fixtures – can all be seen first-hand at the showrooms on weekdays from 9am to 5pm. In every instance, they believe in showing what they offer rather than asking clients to suffer the guesswork of online shopping. They know how to work with trade clients. Bringing a customer with you is convenient and secure. The high quality of showroom products and personnel rival the far-away markets. Their drive-up, open plan gives easy access to each showroom. Spring and Fall Desert Design Days offer national guest speakers, product seminars, sample sales, CEUs and a chance to get acquainted with vendors and new products; with hospitality and a party to boot. They have had to postpone events during the pandemic but hope to bring back “DDD” next Spring. They invite those in the trade who have not yet experienced the showrooms at the “Design District” to come visit, look around, meet the staff(s), see what’s new. Great design requires great suppliers. 23

STUDENT NEWS

Practicing a Positive Attitude

☛ Staying in the

LOOP

T

he last quarter of the year is already in full swing and now is a good time to assess our performance - personal, career and school-related. We are all here together holding tight and working hard in the face of this challenging pandemic. Some might question the effectiveness of the modified learning experiences implemented during the pandemic as an alternative to the traditional in-person classroom environment, interacting with peers, and living the full experience firsthand. However, every learning experience offers different perspectives. Students are challenging the standard framework and are working hard to ensure their education is as fulfilling, challenging, and enriching as ever. They are not stopping to wait for things to get better. We all need to practice a positive attitude every day. Attending classes online might be a safe and accommodating way to get an education, but students still need to work on going out in the industry and getting their feet wet. Our wonderful community of designers, architects and industry partners are doing a great job keeping students in the loop. We are grateful and are showing our appreciation by attending as many CEUs and events as we can to connect and network. I admire all who are living their dream to graduate and build their future. Zoom screen learning and experiences will be something to remember and be proud of when all returns to normal. Emerging Professionals

A

s a member of ASID you have probably heard the term EP. What does that mean? The acronym EP means Emerging Professional. What does it mean to be an Emerging Professional? An Emerging Professional is an Allied ASID designer with less than five year years of post-graduation experience. I believe our national organization says it best, “ASID prepares our EP members to continually excel in a dynamic and evolving profession. You are a part of an organization that believes design impacts lives. You might be at a crossroad in your career, wondering where you should go next. You know the impact that your work has on the human experience, but how do you make your mark? How do you ensure that you are not only part of the conversation, but driving the conversation about design? The research and resources that ASID provides are your golden ticket to a strong professional network, an innovative knowledge base, and the increased visibility that your talent deserves.” If you are an emerging professional, take advantage of all that ASID has to offer and let us take you to the next level.
