Update your portfolio and elevate your brand visibility by getting published and soaring to new heights! Stand out by entering the 2021 Design Excellence Awards competition. AZ North chapter is now accepting submissions of your best work through 12 midnight on Sunday, May 2nd.

Congratulations Dede on a well-deserved retirement! As the Dunn-Edwards Design Service Professional for Arizona, Dede has been a “go-to” color expert for almost a quarter of a century. Dede, an Allied ASID member and ASID industry partner for over 23 years, has always been supportive of designers, industry partners and students. Thank you, Dede for all your hard work and dedication to the chapter.

As we reflect on 2020, let go of old structures and ways of thinking. Begin 2021 with an open perspective that allows transformation and renewal so you can find the courage and resources to heal and rebuild.
Let’s create a better future for ourselves and for humanity. Take some time for yourself to nurture something you wish to bring into your life! A goal, an intention, a dream…anything you choose to give energy to and supercharge it. Remember, every day is a gift, and the quality of your life is a gift to yourself.
Let’s engage in meaningful activities. This year’s events will be more about quality versus quantity. In addition to education and development, we understand the importance of promoting ASID members to the public. Please be aware of two big events coming up for our chapter. The Design Excellence Award competition is now open! Participating is a great opportunity to showcase your fabulous design work and gain recognition from your peers, clients and potential clients. If you don’t play you can’t win! Orientation is on February18th. Registration is open for this Zoom event.
Our annual fundraiser, Interior Designer for Hire, opens February 1st. Volunteering your time to Interior Designer for Hire (IDFH) not only benefits the chapter but creates public awareness of your company. Every client visited as an IDFH representative designer is an opportunity to sign new business and benefit from referrals. If you are interested in volunteering or receiving information, please reach out to info@azn.asid.org.
In lieu of our annual holiday party, we gave back to our community by donating to five local charities. Our charity for 2021 is Stepping Stones of Hope, which provides comprehensive support-based programs, continuum of care and education to grieving children, teens, families, adults and communities. In addition, we submitted and received a donation of $5000 from the Joan C Ray Foundation directly to the charity for their support-based programs.
We also distributed $1,000 to each of these charities:
• Benevilla – an organization that benefits our senior citizens with urgent needs
• AZ Animal Welfare League - the oldest and largest no-kill shelter in Arizona
• Give to the Claus – a group that distributes toys, children’s clothing and packaged foods
• The Shoebox Ministry – an organization that collects and distributes personal hygiene kits to the homeless and working poor in the Greater Phoenix Area
In closing, let us learn from the lessons of 2020 to trust life’s intelligence and limitless creativity; to foster a resilient mindset as a way to master these lessons and build our future with confidence being open, flexible and adaptable; to remind us to rely on love, kindness and solidarity. I miss seeing all of you and hope to see you soon.
Wishing you a healthy and safe 2021 filled with love and laughter.

The past year has been incredibly challenging for everyone. As we move into 2021, we are facing similar challenges but, as one of the most active ASID chapters in the nation, we are finding ways to make it work. And make it work, we are!!
We are continuing the Drive Thru Series until our membership feels more comfortable being in a group setting at chapter meetings. These Zoom presentations give us the opportunity to learn about our industry partners and their businesses from the comfort of our home or office. Join us as we present local and national guest speakers. Look for information about upcoming presentations in The Buzz!
RLAURIE E. CLARK
The Sherwin-Williams Company laurie.clark@sherwin.com
hythm is the secret to how the natural world stays in step. The same sense of balance applies to our personal sense of nature through how we live – and how we design. Fast and slow. Quiet and expressive. Virtual and physical. See it take shape in our forty trend colors, presented in four palettes designed to bring your own rendition of rhythm to beautiful life!

Sanctuary Palette
Nature’s ability to cultivate wellness and calm is more welcome than ever. The nurturing hues of this palette, including warm neutrals and natural tones, forge the connection between the modern built environment and the living world. Additionally, Sherwin-Williams Color of The Year: Urban Bronze SW 7048 lives in the Sanctuary Palette!

Encounter Palette
Layers of local character – rooted in culture and artisan craft – create an authentic sense of place. The rich but muted hues in this palette convey that heritage quality and the value of simple, meaningful experience.

Exuberance meets restraint in today’s more curated take on maximalism. The vibrancy of this palette – including lavish pinks and green – finds inspiration in classicism, but with just a touch of cutting edge.
The optimism and imagination of mid-century modernists inspired designs that reached high into the sky and deep into the sea. This palette of white, charcoal and pops of color celebrates that spirit as it bounds fearlessly into the future.

Kristina Bedoe, General Manager of Expressions, hosted the Kohler Drive Thru presentation. Kristina provided a short behind the scenes tour of the Expressions interactive plumbing, appliance and hardware showroom. Katie Baker, Senior Sales Manager of Kohler & Kallista, provided a high-energy introduction to the new innovations in kitchen and bath.
After sharing the history of Kohler, a privately held company that is familyowned and operated, she dove right into the focus on Smart Home technology which includes:
Verdera Voice Lighted Mirror is enabled with voice command through Alexa or Google Assist. You can even ask it what today’s weather will be while you’re brushing your teeth!
DTV+ (Digital Thermostatic Valve) with Kohler Konnect allows you to remotely control light, sound, and steam, all at the touch of a button. You can turn your shower on and off from your phone or smart speaker.

Kohler Revolution 360 provides a swirling flush that will help keep your toilet bowl clean after each use and can even be paired with a special cleansing tank.
Cleansing seats are a growing trend and Kohler now has a bidet functioning seat.
The intelligent toilet has cleansing set technology incorporated including motion activated, multiple function remote control, sanitation system, heated seat, LED night light, deodorizer and a warm air dryer. There is also a new toilet that is 2” higher than comfort height. Perfect for older clients (or really tall people!).
Kohler Konnect has voice connect to control your kitchen faucet through voice command. Need one cup of hot water? Just ask for it! It will even make sure you wash your hands for the full twenty seconds you’re supposed to!
New Response hands-free technology is now offered in several kitchen faucets. No more worry about touching your faucet with contaminated hands!
Katie noted continuing plumbing fixture trends include technology, simplified products for easy cleaning (eg: skirted toilet bowls and touch-free faucets), gold and black finishes, apron front sinks, and freestanding tubs.
For an opportunity to have your photos and company information featured on the Kohler website, incorporate the hashtag #kohlerideas within your social media posts.Your design might be featured on Kohler’s social media!!

CHRISTOPHER DEVINE Marketing Manager, Bang & Olufsen New York
KIMBERLEE WATT co-owner Watt Integration

Kimberlee Watt, co-owner of Watt Integration, in partnership with Christopher Devine, Marketing Manager of Bang & Olufsen, offered a visually impactful presentation of luxury audio visual electronics and the evolution of devices that transmit.
Bang & Olufsen, founded in Denmark, is the oldest continual operating audio-visual company in the world, having just celebrated their 95th anniversary. Their three brand pillars are: Beautiful Sound, Timeless Design and Unrivaled Craftsmanship. This innovative company embraces the Scandinavian values of ‘Form Follows Function’, and are known for their unique and progressive product design using natural organic materials authentically. They place the human experience at the center of technology.
In the mid 1950s, B&O began working with furniture designers to help develop their products so their electronics could become pieces of modern furniture. Later, they commissioned well-known, iconic industrial designers for product creation and design. Their belief is the connected home is a one-touch approach to full home automation.
Watt Integration provides one-stop shopping to all things electronic in the home. They offer a wide range of options for clients who are looking for home automation.
Legend has it that the first roundtable idea started with King Arthur and his knights. The table was round suggesting equality, where no one person was above any other. Our Round Table Discussions do not require a suit of armor, however, we encourage your presence and participation. Our design community is experiencing and navigating tremendous changes in so many ways, which will probably continue throughout the year. The limitations to connect in person, at meetings, and events have disrupted our socializing as a community. We should stay connected not only for our mental health but because of our need for social interaction and knowledge sharing of topics that have impact.

Over the past three months, we have discussed the magnitude of staying connected in the global pandemic and our new normal of social distancing, the importance of nourishing ourselves moderated by Barbara Kaplan, Allied ASID; identifying and attracting your clients presented by Cindy Lewton, ASID; and the value of being NCIDQ certified with Susan Nicolson, ASID. Join us the first Wednesday of every month for 30 minutes to learn, discuss, collaborate, and support fellow designers, students, and industry partners. Round Table Discussions celebrate the power of staying connected in a world that has become disconnected in so many ways.

Join the Interior Designer For Hire (IDFH) team and take a new approach to building your business and growing profits in 2021! Our ASID Arizona North Chapter has been a pioneer in promoting this program that enables established designers and emerging professionals to garner new clients. This year we are offering both in-person and virtual consultation options for clients. Clients choose between a one- or two-hour consultations. The fees go back to ASID student scholarships and community outreach programs. Designers benefit by establishing a broader client base and clients with smaller budgets experience the advice of a professional.
Our chapter is one of the ten largest in the nation. We have achieved that distinction because of our volunteers who are dedicated to developing programs that benefit designers, students, industry partners and the community at large. Our continued success is dependent on current and future volunteers. It is wonderful to give back to this great organization that has helped many of us grow.
To learn more and volunteer, email the chapter administrator (info@azn.asid.org).

Chapter Community Project:
With every beginning comes an end. When that end is achieved by many individuals coming together to give time and talent for the benefit of others, it becomes a celebration. A celebration of community. What began as the annual Student Charette project guided by Camille Self, Allied ASID, ended as the Chapter Community Project as a complete redesign of the James Walton Home, a rehabilitation center for Veterans working to overcome homelessness by recapturing their lives and dignity (JWH). Owned and operated by Project Veterans Pride, a 501(c)(3) organization (PVP), JWH is led and staffed by exmilitary; many of whom are graduates of PVP.
The Community Project was to transform haphazard and inefficient areas into comfortable and functional offices and homelike spaces. The project scope encompassed the reception areas, dining hall, community lounge, and management offices.

L to R: Deborah Binderman, Student ASID; Christeen Verchot, Rn, PhD, USAFNC LTC. (Retired), President-Project Veterans Pride, Executive Director-James Walton Home; Marwah Asad, Student ASID; Susan Solliday, ASID, past president-AZN chapter ASID; Fathima Rassha Rizwan, Student ASID; Paddy Rasmussen, Allied ASID-current president-AZN chapter ASID and Dede Radford, DunnEdwards Design Service Professional, Industry Partner
Although many businesses were reeling with the effects of COVID-19, personal hardships were set aside and the time and resources needed to effectuate this project were forthcoming from 24 outstanding local and national businesses: Thoma-Holec Design; these ASID Industry Partners: Atmosphere Commercial Interiors, Contract Millwork, Dunn Edwards, Facings of America, Inc., Fiber-Seal of Arizona, GE Appliances, Image Craft, Kravet Fabrics, Monterrey Tile Co., Salt Creek Furniture, Special Deliveries, The Shade Store, and these other local businesses and organizations: North Phoenix Lions Club Foundation, Olympic Hardwood Inc., Pacific Furniture, Phoenix Downtown Lions Club Foundation, Burch, Innovative-Accents, International Furnishings Design Association, Ja-Zy Interiors, LLC, JWH Electrical, Terra Stone, Tri-West, Ltd., US Industrial Fastener of Arizona, Walker Zanger Tile, and William Nevada Johnston Painting.
This community project was led by Susan Solliday, ASID, Past President 2019-2020, with the team of senior design students: Bahana Harake, Student ASID; Deborah Binderman, Student ASID; Fathima Rasha Rizwan, Student ASID; and Marwah Asad, Student ASID; and Chapter President Patricia Rasmussen, Allied ASID.
The 2021 Student Charette program will begin this spring. The Charette provides a practicum style environment for design students to prepare for the NCIDQ examination and receive recognition amongst their peers. All students in accredited Arizona interior design programs are invited to participate. The focus of the upcoming Charette and Community Project will be the Stepping Stones of Hope.

Mix & Mingle showcases the Design Excellence Award Winners, the Tastemakers, by providing them the opportunity to discuss their vision and projects and bask in the public limelight! It was exciting to have our first live event since Covid began. We had seventeen award winners participate: Monica Tiffee, Camille Self, Sujaya Reddy, Mary Marsh, Cindy Lewton, Stephanie Larson, Cathy Kominsky, Anita Lang & her design assistant, Carly Klick, Angelica Henry, Adrienne Hart, Lisa Giacomino, Laura Eagan, Brian Cox, Sandy Black, and Jeffrey Bennett.

Our Industry Partner, Image Craft, printed the large format display boards for all of our participants. Even though it was a small group that attended, we all enjoyed each other’s company. It gave attendees a little more personal time with each awardwinning designer to ask questions and interact while still social distancing. William Buck Lewis (Bucky to his friends) was our special guest from New York. He did a great job photographing the events of the night.

A huge thank you to our Industry Partner and Diamond Sponsor, Alyshaan Fine Rugs who hosted the event. Our Media Partner, Modern Luxury, Lauren Sturman and Michael Zivyak catered gourmet boxed food by Benedict’s. It was fabulous! We toasted the award-winning designers with champagne splits, beer and wine and enjoyed the catered feast under the stars. We played it safe and had food and drinks outside while mixing and mingling at a social distance.
Thank you to all the volunteers who assisted with the event: Tabitha Stiebers, Kimberlee Watt, Eileen Burick and board members for their time and effort to make 2020 Mix & Mingle a success. So grateful to you all for your continued support of ASID Arizona North Chapter!
We all know how extraneous noise can affect how well you can hear, concentrate and communicate. Home offices, shared work places, public spaces...they all have sound levels that vary, and without proper acoustic buffers, it can be maddening. Image Craft offers a wide variety of visually appealing acoustic solutions; including art panels, wallcoverings, and ceiling baffles. Contact us today and let us show you how to control your acoustic levels with brilliant and beautiful solutions.

LAUREN STURMAN Group Publisher Modern Luxury Scottsdale & Modern Luxury Interiors Scottsdale
As we say good riddance to 2020, we begin the new year with a new direction. After what was seemingly the most turbulent, unexpected year of our lifetimes, the clock struck midnight on December 31st, and we welcomed 2021 with open arms, (or, more likely, fist bumps).
One year ago, we were spending a lot more time out of our houses; eating in restaurants, shopping, attending concerts and galas, and walking around maskless. Since we’re not spending as much on outings and travel plans, funds have been freed up to transform our homes into their own retreats and do some of the work that may have been put off in the past.
The surge in new residential design business was a pleasant surprise in 2020 and, is undoubtedly something we will see growing in the months ahead as vaccines continue to get distributed. Taking the time to put together a strategic plan to help mitigate all the future unknowns is paramount in finding success. It might sound like a daunting task, but well worth the time and effort. As ASID’s media partner, my team and I at Modern Luxury are always available to help your brand remain visible to the consumers you most covet.
If I’ve learned anything this past year, it’s that change is inevitable. Whether in personal relationships or our careers, we all have had to adjust and embrace change in all facets of our life. I think it’s safe to say our year will likely take on many new directions as we navigate 2021. I look forward to greeting you with open arms (or at least a fist bump) in the very near future.
We ended the 2020 NCIDQ Study Group with several of our chapter members sitting for the fall exams and receiving a round of personal successes. Amy Wenger, Allied ASID and Laura Pask, Allied ASID, passed their IDFX and IDPX Exams. Susan Solliday, ASID, Past President 2019-2020, and Christina Dickinson, ASID, received NCIDQ Certification with successful completion of all three exams. We are immensely proud of these women!
Study Group
So, why sit for the exam if Arizona does not require licensing? Personal satisfaction aside, putting oneself in a position of staying competitive with the many licensed designers pouring into the State of Arizona is just smart market positioning.
It’s important to understand study groups are not in lieu of taking time to read, learn, and study materials on your own. No, that’s on you. It does offer the opportunity to actively engage with the textbook material and codes on a different level and, of course, hearing different perspectives and stories from peers helps the information stick. However, accountability and moral support reign paramount and can often be the deciding factor in making it over your own personal finish line. The Spring 2021 Study Group meets on Monday through May 31 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Zoom and again in Fall 2021.

IImage Craft was founded by Doug Olson in 1979 as a custom black & white photo processing lab. Its origin was as a part-time business for supplemental income while working at a local camera store. Image Craft quickly grew from a one-man show working out of an apartment to a full-time operation growing steadily each year. By 1984, it had become a full-service commercial color lab serving professional photographers, marketing and ad agencies and designers in various fields. By 1999, Image Craft was the largest commercial photographic color lab in the southwest.

The photography industry started rapidly changing as digital imaging technology became more and more capable in the late 1990’s. Image Craft started changing, too and was an early adopter of these new technologies and moved forward into new digital and fabrication markets. Staying true to its photographic roots, Image Craft has always worked with discerning clients that value the color, accuracy and quality standards that help their projects stand apart from competitors.
Today, Image Craft offers a diverse range of printing, display and installation services for the creative professional. Limited edition photographic printing is still a passion, but it is now joined by a variety of artwork reproduction services such as canvas and metal printing, hand-embellished collectible artwork, acoustic printed interior solutions, custom wallpaper and printed wallcoverings. Image Craft works with architects, designers and graphics professionals to fabricate innovative and complete interior graphic solutions for themed and branded environments across the country.

Kimberlee Watt is a continuing ASID Industry Partner, entrepreneur, and co-owner of Watt Integration and Bang & Olufsen Scottsdale. She shares her passion for technology and smart living solutions while actively expressing the importance of audiovideo integration and automation to the design community.
In today’s residential market, there is an expectation of technology and automation. It could be lighting control, whole-home music, voice-control, or a reliable network for all of our virtual needs. Kimberlee notes, “Our industry is no longer determined by the size of your TV and how loud you can crank your speakers. Clients expect to participate in life-style functions of their audio-video integration and home automation decisions. These selections should be part of the design planning process. My continued goal is to merge the relationship gaps between integrator and designers for a seamless client experience.”
As the Bang & Olufsen Scottsdale showroom owner, Kimberlee understands the concept of design-conscience audio-video solutions. B&O’s history has roots in the design community and is known for their iconic designs, true quality craftsmanship, and immersive sound. Kimberlee invites all design professionals to visit her showroom in Scottsdale.

In December 2020, Monterrey Tile generously provided ten Interior Design scholarships through ASID. The program began in 2019 as a way to support the industry. Qualifying students must be currently enrolled with an Interior Design major in an Arizona college or university, be members of ASID and submit a written application. Ten Arizona students were chosen, and each received $500. Congratulations!

hen faced with challenges and uncertainty as experienced this past year, it is often difficult to focus on a future. So many questions, so many roadblocks, so many options. It is our resilience, talent, and experience that enables us to create opportunities through decisiveness and action.
We are deeply grateful for your engagement and commitment to the health of our chapter and the well being of our community. We hope this issue provides inspiration and resources for your strategic planning and business development into 2021. Thank you to all who have generously contributed their time and talent.
It would be an understatement to say that many of us were eager to say good-bye to 2020 and hastily usher in a new year with a quiet sense of hope. It was, without question, one of the most arduous years any of us have faced in our lifetime - shattered assumptions, re-calibrating our expectations and reframing what we would adopt as our way of life, as we met wave after wave of challenges as 2020 presented them. It was brutal, that much we know.
What may not have been apparent, as we forged ahead into the unknown, was our collective resilience. While we might not have chosen the circumstance or been prepared for them, we responded with agility and lightning speed adaptation. It was most certainly terrifying, but it was also momentous for all the rapid development it has brought about, much of which holds promise of a brighter future.
As we reflect on a year of great turmoil, we can claim victories in areas of the industry previously thought to be in the distant future. Never before has there been such a global effort by competing pharma to come together in an effort to produce an effective vaccine to combat the COVID -19 Virus. An expeditious and remarkable accomplishment as vaccines are now being deployed worldwide less than a year from the time we understood we were facing a pandemic. We experienced international environmental recovery with all major cities seeing unprecedented declines in emissions and carbon monoxide levels. This prompted governments and businesses to reaffirm their commitment to sustainable initiatives. The slowing of human activity created opportunity for wildlife population recoveries across the globe. Telemedicine and Online Learning became mainstream, narrowing the educational divide and provided Doctors and Teachers better tools to safely engage with patients and students across the economic and geographic plane, most notably underserved markets.
Business innovations and changing work environments saw radical yet wildly beneficial shifts. Supply chain vulnerabilities were exposed, and businesses responded quickly by sourcing products or production locally or adapting to manufacture in house. The office became the home office and while it presents a challenge to juggle responsibilities it has allowed for more autonomy, flexibility and potential free time. Skeptical employers were surprised and delighted to find productivity actually improved by 47%! A surge in personal development emerged as well with LinkdIn Learning and Skillshare experiencing a 300% and 400% increase in new user subscriptions and tutorial viewership respectively.
Embracing technology to stay connected has emerged as one of our most critical tools to stave off isolation. Once vilified for dividing us, technology has become our lifeline to friends and family in a time of social distancing. Zoom, Google Meets, Skype and Whatsapp are all means of doing business in an era where we cannot see one another in person, but these platforms have, more importantly, paved the way for us to remain what we are: social creatures. It allows us to connect with the ones we love and have quality, meaningful interactions even as we are carefully secluded.
As much as we all wished that 2020 and all of its tragedy would magically vanish on January 1st, we are all smarter than that - and frankly stronger as a result. As the new year unfolds, we realize what began last year is far from over, the difference is now we understand we have agency. Like any other struggle, you can dictate how you will live in the pandemic or you can let the pandemic dictate to you. In hardship we are often surprised to discover most of what we need is already within us. Looking back, I believe we proved this to be true and I believe it arms us for what lies ahead.Victor Frankle, holocaust survivor says it best, “between stimulus and response there is a space, in that space is the power to choose. In that choice lies our growth and or freedom”.

Most of us have experienced a rollercoaster of change in our industry, the market, and our clientele throughout this past year. Many of us have faced extreme lows and uncertainty while others have seen record increases in business. Our industry was impacted in a much different way than the balance of industry across the nation.
With the ground shifting beneath us, we are digging deep for agility in finding our footing and new ways to do business. The ability to pivot has served many well. Limited accessibility, dwindling prospects, and halted in-person meetings forced us to turn to the virtual world to connect more than ever. Working online to specify materials, source products, collaborate, and prospect became critical to the survival of our businesses in 2020. It can be difficult to navigate the path to finding new business with so much uncertainty in our future. This is true of any year regardless of the level of confidence our consultants and resources have in their forecasting models. While there are no guarantees and no silver bullets, decisive action creates opportunity. Ours is a business of creative problem solving and continual self development is critical in fulfilling our responsibility to foster the health, safety and welfare of our clients.
Concepts to consider when strategic planning for a new year:
• Self reflection – What do you do best? To sell yourself, it is vital to know what you have to offer and how you can differentiate your talent.
• Pivot with the market - How are current market conditions affecting your business? With the nationwide shift to working from home, would offering virtual services retain and expand your client pool? Do you have the knowledge to provide the service and products your clients now need or is it time to take classes and develop new skills. Challenge yourself to think differently. Understand the new landscape and provide solutions to address the isolation we are all experiencing.
• Process improvement - Now that you know what you’re selling, take a hard look at your processes, goals and resources to determine areas of improvement. This is a time to formalize effective processes, develop a strong communication strategy, and create an environment of accountablity.
• Identify your target market – Once you know what you do best, define the charateristics of a potential client that needs what you have to offer. Focus your prospecting efforts, don’t spread your resources too thin.
• Reaching clients – How are you continuing to find business? Are you using the internet to its full potential? Give your website a fresher look with appropriate content to draw new views. Drive viewers to your website with a consistent social media presence. Utilize websites catering to your target client and providing opportunites to interact like Houzz and Pinterest. Give your business an identity by taking advantage of video posts, podcasts and blogs.
• Create mutually beneficial relationships – Networking and developing resources and relationships have shifted to a virtual setting. Have you given up on networking or do you continue to find new organizations and create opportunities? The symbiotic relationship between the interior designer and general contractor has proven more fruitful than ever for many companies. Seek to develop mutually beneficial business relationships that include the expertise of trusted showrooms and vendors who have proven their customer focus and commitment. Take advantage of your local resources.

Burick Communication Design President & Creative Director, Eileen Burick, Industry Partner Rep, provided insightful strategic marketing information to online viewers of our December 2020 ASID Drive Thru Series. Eileen shared important business advice and online resources to help drive your business in 2021.
Eileen began her presentation by explaining that businesses in the interior design industry have benefitted from consumers focused on staying at home and sheltering in place. Current circumstances have created a strong desire for updating indoor and outdoor living areas, and it is up to you to be visible to consumers as their desires turn to action. With this in mind, a few of the things to think about when marketing your business: Is your brand attracting interest? Is your customer engaged? Are you providing solutions to your customers’ pain points?
We all know it is difficult to attract the attention of new clients, making it increasingly important to consider how you present your company to the public. Keep in mind how your logo, branding, website, and marketing materials make an immediate impression on prospects and customers. Professionally photographed spaces and product images have the power to communicate emotional messages much faster than words. Make sure your visual brand identity is used consistently. Consistency equals reliability and presents a professional image. Maintain a unique identity through your brand.
Make your website a robust resource for your buyers. Consumers are looking for answers for their questions and your website is your most important 24/7 marketing tool.Your website is your visual ambassador. Does your website contain a variety of content that is of interest to your buyers? Know your buyer - find out your customer’s pain points and provide content that addresses what they need.
Apply your budget for maximum impact of content marketing. Research articles that are of interest and post those (along with the source attribution), work with a ghost writer, or write your own content. Consumers are reading blogs across websites for current information and the number of content formats has exploded. Offer content that provides value. Content marketing attracts potential customers, keeps them engaged, and moves them along the sales funnel. Blogs, short articles, and posts outweigh all the other tactics.
Enhancing visibility:
• Consider showing the behind the scenes of your business. Showcase your brand’s unique personality and story and give your viewers an idea of who the employees are who create the places, spaces, and products they love.
• Video is a constantly dominating trend. 83% of the world’s internet traffic will be on video by 2022. Livestreaming and YouTube presence help you connect to your audience. 68% of YouTube viewers use those videos to make purchasing decisions.
• Google My Business is controlling how your business appears on search engines.
• Save time and effort by automating your social media posting with Hootsuite, Sprout Social, and Buffer.
• Set up email automation campaigns based on triggers like Mailchimp and Constant Contact.
• Set up a steady line of communication with customers that provides updated content using tools like Chatbox and Pop-ups. Consider implementing tools like Growth Funnel and Live Leads to develop interactivity.
• Voice Search is another recurring trend. 20% of mobile queries are done with voice search. Voice Search depends on a fast website and accurate business listings and tends to be full questions.
• Interactive content can include quizzes, take polls, shoppable social media posts, user generated content, and calculators.
Eileen recommends that you take advantage of industry trends shaping interior design marketing and create opportunities to supercharge and promote your business. You can thrive by addressing these marketing trends and incorporating them into your business.

The world is witnessing very unusual times nowadays and so am I. I started this semester with a motivated spirit as this is my graduation semester. However, converting my five in-person classes into online classes was not ideal. I am a mother of two, and one of the biggest challenges I have encountered was being at home trying to attend WebEx and Zoom meetings while trying to lock myself away from them! In addition, as an interior design student, the materials and tools provided in school are so valuable and irreplaceable when working on projects. Gratefully, my instructors were able to request free student access to most of the drafting and rendering software, so I didn’t have to purchase them. I am also saddened by the cancellation of the commencement ceremony as I’ve been waiting for this moment since I started school. I told my kids all about the student procession and how happy I was going to be with them there to support me. I am trying so hard not to let these disappointments affect my focus on my classes and just keep moving forward like everyone else!
While the pandemic brought challenges in my graduation process, I must also look for the positives. I am enrolled in five classes this semester at three different Maricopa campuses (Scottsdale, Phoenix, and Mesa) in order to accommodate a non-conflicted schedule. It would have been a huge inconvenience for me to drive from Glendale to these different destinations and spend most of my day in the car. The online solution made me avoid all of this and save time to work on my studies. I was also informed I needed to take a class at the last minute in order to transfer to the NAU program to get my bachelor’s degree. A sixth class! Had I not been quarantined the added class would have been impossible. The pandemic has made most of my instructors more understanding and flexible so self-paced management of my classes has taken off some of the deadline pressure for me.
While the pandemic has brought on a lot of obstacles and fears, what I have learned is we should always try to look for opportunities to grow and keep working on making our dreams come true.
MARWAH ASAD Student ASID Student Rep to the Board
The Interiors Student Alliance (a combination of ASID and IIDA members) of The Design School at Arizona State University hosted their annual Light for Hope fundraiser in October 2020. The online event featured a silent auction of original light fixtures designed, crafted and donated by students and professionals. All proceeds benefit Free Arts for abused Children of Arizona.
Free Arts uses the healing powers of the arts to help abused and homeless children build resiliency and learn to trust and heal. All the children in the Free Arts programs have experienced family trauma, homelessness or violence. To begin healing, they need services including mentoring, a caring community and an opportunity to learn new skills and express themselves.

The Emerging Professional meeting held on Thursday, January 14, 2021, kick started this year’s first of four meetings. We had a wonderful panel of speakers who helped our student and new designers begin to navigate the new year. Our first speaker, Jennifer Biffer, NCIDQ, has over twenty years of experience in the industry, having transformed countless properties in the United States and abroad. Jennifer is NCIDQ certified and is also a realtor with Launch. Jennifer spoke about clients, projects & profit evaluation and the key details on how to vet your clients before saying yes to a project.
Camille Self, Allied ASID, is a former Arizona North Chapter board member and has participated with the Interior Designer for Hire (ID4H) program for the last three years, converting many of those ID4H “appointments” into “clients”. She has won several Design Excellence Awards in the Emerging Professional category since starting her business in 2016. Camille spoke about the benefits, “do’s and don’ts” of volunteering and growing one’s clientele while being an active participant with Interior Designer for Hire (ID4H). She also discussed key points regarding virtual meeting etiquette.
We closed this event with a panel discussion hosted by Janet Jackson, Allied ASID. Janet is the Communications Director and a past president of the Arizona North Chapter. She is the Director of Operations for Alliance Contracting. Janet is also an adjunct instructor for Scottsdale Community College, teaching the Interior Materials classes, and sits on the Board of Advisors for EVIT (the Eastern Valley Institute of Technology). The panel discussion covered the benefits of volunteering for ASID and the Interior Designer for Hire program that begins in February and runs through April each year.
The panelists included: Debra May Himes, ASID (past president of the Arizona North Chapter who has won a number of awards and accolades during her more than thirty-year career), Susan Solliday, ASID (past president of the Arizona North Chapter and board member) and Marwah Asad, Student ASID (current Student Representative to the board). The information provided by the panelists, with varying degrees of experience, was insightful. Volunteering for ASID was likened to receiving free on-the-job training. Each panelist felt they got so much back by being part of an organization, both in terms of business, leads and contacts, and most importantly creating long-lasting relationships. Being actively involved helped these designers reach out to both industry partners and colleagues who are more than willing to help or provide guidance. Some grew from volunteer to board member to being president of the chapter – a wonderful record of volunteerism and accomplishment.
If you are interested in participating in the Interior Designer for Hire (ID4H) program or would like to volunteer as board member, chair a committee, or mentor, please reach out to info@azn.asid.org. We thank our members for their continued support of our chapter.
