IConTInUe To Be AMAZeD AT The DePTh of talent, dedication and spirit that our Chapter possesses. As one of the strongest ASID Chapters in the country, we are not only consistently among the top (if not the top) Chapter in retention, but our members are recognized locally and nationally for their individual projects and lifelong achievements to our industry.

That being said, a hearty congratulations to all of our Design Excellence Award winners, and our latest Fellow in a distinguished group, LuAnn Thoma-Holec, FASID. A hearty thank you goes out to the many volunteers who stepped up and shared their talents with our Chapter over the past year, especially the Board of Directors, who have donated countless hours to make our Chapter such a success. Please join me in extending a special thank you to the outgoing Board members, Cindy Lewton, ASID; Linda Heinz, FASID; LaDawn Bentley, ASID; and Amber Rice, Student ASID, who have worked tirelessly on your behalf. Our ASID Industry Partners have also enhanced and benefited our Chapter and we are so grateful for their support.

So, as we transition to a new Board of Directors, know that we are all looking forward, fostering the momentum that has been building over this past year. We are blessed to have an amazing Board that has like-minded goals and vision for the future and who are working hard to develop outstanding programs and educational opportunities that will benefit all levels of experience.

One of the great impacts that we feel we need to focus on this year is branding. ASID is the largest and most respected design organization in the country and one of our objectives is to make ASID a household name here in Arizona. Our branding strategy will look to develop a higher public profile and educate the public on the benefits of hiring a professional ASID designer. Look for great things to come.

We’re continuing to support UMOM and Aunt Rita’s Foundation, and we’re excited about furthering our relationship with Stardust Industries, and continuing our involvement in the Design For Hope projects.

We understand the importance of receiving value for your membership… it’s our job to make that happen. But it’s also your responsibility to get the most out of your ASID membership by getting involved. Whether that means supporting the Chapter by attending meetings and events, mentoring a student or practitioner working to take the NCIDQ, or giving your time to volunteer for one of our committees or charity projects, you will get more out of the experience than you give. We welcome you!

I am honored to serve as your incoming President for 2013-2014, and will work with the Board to make our Chapter even better!

look AheAD…

ThoSe TWo WoRDS WeRe The IMPeTUS and the inspiration for this year’s Design Excellence Awards Gala. They are from Ms. Dorothy Draper’s oft-quoted saying: “Never look back, except for an occasional glance, look ahead and plan for the future. Success is not built on past laurels, but rather on continuous activity. Keep busy searching out new ideas and, experimentally, keep ahead of the times, or at least up with them.” Today, we too have so much to learn from the past and what we can see of the future.

As we glance back, we are glad to see those financially tough times slipping into the past. Arizona was one of the first States to feel the financial collapse, and we are now one of the strongest growing States as we rebound. As we look ahead, what will we learn from it? Did those times bring out in us a desire to build new business strategies so that we can be ready for what is to come? Did we keep ourselves busy with searching out new ideas? Are we ready to keep ahead of new technologies that will have an impact on design? For an example of new technology, see Linda Barkman’s future insight on design and technology in Eye On Design on page 12.

As for allowing the past to be our guide, your new Board of Directors has big shoes to fill. As we take on our positions on the Board, we will attempt to continue the path established that has set the bar high and tasked us to provide our membership with what is needed to continue as a successful Chapter. But it also takes you – our members – being an active part. Look at the Events Calendar on page 5 and put the upcoming events into your calendar. I’ll be at these events so look for me and let me know what you want to see and hear.

You will learn of all these great events as we communicate to you through the printed pages of the Desert Design magazine, online at our Website, www.asidaznorth.org and on Facebook; and electronically through the Creative Brief and E-blasts. We have a busy year planned, so we invite you to keep up with us!

For now, take time to glance back at the 2013 winning designs that are presented as this issue’s feature article. Be inspired by these award-winning designs. Let them stimulate you to implement new ideas, experiment with new colors and materials, and to creatively design for your clients.

I wonder if Dorothy Draper could ever imagine that her words, penned after the Great Depression, would be so relevant today after the Great Recession?

PReSIDenTIAl CITATIonS AWARDeD

EACh yeAR, FoUR PReSIDenTIAl Citations are presented at the Design Excellence Awards Gala. While called “Presidential Citations,” the entire Board of Directors selects the recipients. We are happy to announce that the Quality of Life award was presented to Karen Jayne, Executive Director of Stardust Building Supplies. This award recognizes a person/entity that is improving the quality of life for the entire community. Stardust aspires to decrease the amount of debris produced by the construction trades by embracing recycling and reusing of building materials. In 2013, our Chapter partnered with Stardust to create kitchens for needy families.

Enhancement of the Arts is presented to an individual/entity whose activities enhance the arts throughout Greater Phoenix. Sherry Sklar, Executive Director, accepted this award on behalf of Scottsdale Artists’ School. In its 30th year, Scottsdale Artists’ School provides over 200 art programs enriching the lives of children and adults.

The Designer of Distinction award recognizes the individual contributions of a designer, but not design projects or a design firm—this is not a design award. Not only must the individual have contributed significantly to our Chapter, we look for a person who has extended their expertise, knowledge, and human worth to the community. Janelle Schick, ASID, deservedly received this award. Janelle has chaired numerous committees, held several offices, and is a past president of our Chapter. Within the community, Janelle has advocated for legislation in support of the design industry, has participated on college advisory boards, and has donated her services to help those less fortunate. We are privileged to have Janelle as a member of our Chapter.

Industry Partner of the Year is awarded to an individual who has been an active volunteer in our Chapter’s activities, as well as graciously extending their expertise and knowledge within the community. This year it was awarded to Naomi Anderson, who began her association with our Chapter nearly 30 years ago as an administrative assistant.

Naomi Anderson’s family from left: Parents, Marlowe & Margie Urdahl; daughters, Jessica Terpening and Amanda Rogers; and husband, Jeff Anderson.

Naomi went on to develop our Chapter’s first newsletter, which she grew into a magazine. Naomi created a public relations firm - Anderson+Company - that supported interior designers and their businesses. Accepting on Naomi’s behalf were her husband, Jeff, as well as her parents and two daughters.

Each year we are humbled by the contributions to our Chapter and community and applaud this year’s recipients. Congratulations!

Chapter will again be a partner with Aunt Rita’s Foundation for the Second Annual Red Brunch, to be held Saturday, November 30th at the Westin Kierland Resort and Spa. Designers are invited to participate by creating and donating holiday wreaths for the silent auction. All proceeds will go to Aunt Rita’s Foundation.

Entry forms are available on our Website, www.asidaznorth.org. If you have questions, contact Brian Gallop at 602-943-3488. Last year, our support of the Foundation was great! Let’s make it outstanding this year.

ARIZonA noRTh ChAPTeR IS FoRTUnATe To hAVe AS MeMBeRS some of the best designers in the country. One distinguished designer is LuAnn Thoma-Holec, FASID. The title of Fellow is the highest honor bestowed on a member of ASID in recognition of outstanding service and contributions to the Society, the profession, and the interior design industry. LuAnn is only one of four Fellowships awarded in 2013 in the United States.

Since designing her first independent assisted living community in 1994, LuAnn Thoma-Holec has become a leader in this increasingly relevant specialty, designing more than 60 communities throughout the United States and Canada. Driven by her abiding passion to make the lives of the aging easier, more enjoyable and more active, LuAnn has received numerous awards for her work, including more than a dozen ASID Design Excellence Awards from the Arizona North Chapter for hospitality and senior living designs, and multiple awards from the NAHB 50+ Housing Awards, the National Council on Senior Housing, and Design Environments on Aging.

A consummate professional in her interior design work, her professional affiliations and her relationships with colleagues, LuAnn is known as a mentor and a great supporter of ASID and the design profession. As an ASID member for more than 30 years, she adeptly represents the profession of interior design before many of the nation’s aging and gerontology organizations.

Throughout her career, LuAnn has been an exceptional presence within the ASID Arizona North Chapter, serving as Chapter president, board member and committee chair. She has also served on several national committees, including the National Ethics Committee, the ASID Aging in Place Council, Assisted Living Federation of America, and the ASID Board of Directors.

Remember to report your CEUs by December 31, 2013. The current policy requires successful completion of at least 0.6 CEUs, equal to 6 contact hours of approved continuing education coursework, during each twoyear reporting period. Beginning January 1, 2014 the requirement will be 1.0 or 10 contact hours.

eye on DeSIgn

When IT CoMeS To InTeRIoR DeSIgn, BeIng A WInneR IS noT only A MATTeR oF TAlenT, but also of being resourceful and knowledgeable about clients’ needs and what the market has to offer. As editor of a high-end shelter publication focusing on Southwest style, I, too, need to be aware of current trends. But I also need to be able to distinguish between those with regional relevance and those without.

This means sifting through mountains of information and walking through as many homes—with as many of you—as possible.

Going forward, I expect to see a continued emphasis on green products and repurposed materials, regardless of a home’s style. Even some moderately priced, high-volume furniture stores now carry a selection of furnishings made from reclaimed wood, and these certainly fit with the relaxed, rustic sensibility that is being embraced by so many and that is so appropriate for the Southwest. With the growing popularity of the eclectic/collected look, it is not surprising that there is an increasing demand for unusual items that have stories and that add another layer of interest. Whether made from old doors, discarded shipping crates, or salvaged window shutters from homes in faraway lands, these pieces evoke a sense of history and can even stimulate conversation.

Along with the old, at the other end of the spectrum is the dizzying array of new high-tech advancements that are rocking our world. I read recently that the purpose and role of a television set is about to change profoundly.

“Smart” TVs will be capable of serving as video communication devices, as well as forums for social networking, with the back-and-forth chatter appearing on screen while television programs and movies are being watched. This will certainly affect the selection and placement of furniture, especially sofas, since users are apt to spend more time sitting up than lying back.

According to one expert, the futurist consensus is that touch projection technology, offering the ability to project recipes and more onto a given surface, will enable household surfaces such as kitchen counters to function like giant iPads. This, in turn, is sure to influence our choices of countertop materials and colors, with readability being a necessary consideration.

And then there are the high-tech electric “super toilets” —currently only available in Japan—with such features as a subtle air vent that warms the floor in front of the fixture, and even an atmosphere light and music player, all with a touch-panel remote that lets you customize the settings. Bells and whistles aside, the best feature to me is a sleek, easy-to-clean shape, and Toto’s Aquia wall-hung toilet is one that looks good and has a high-efficiency rating to boot. If you ask me, it’s only a matter of time before these chic commodes will be coming out of the closet and shown off, just like today’s TVs. And designers are sure to take advantage of the opportunity to find winning ways of doing so.

Design Excellence Awards Gala 2013

SSOLD OUT! We were overwhelmed with the response to this year’s gala. Almost immediately after opening the registration portal, we had to add seats as registrations exceeded what we initially anticipated. The we then added more seats until, finally, we could not squeeze one more person in. Many people commented on the “intimate” evening (much better word than “crowded”) and were impressed with the beautiful setting of Montelucia Resort and Spa and even more impressed with the centerpieces and décor in the ballroom.

We were fortunate to have Karen Romersa, Industry Partner of Your Source, as well as Bill Heacox, Industry Partner of Inside/Out Showrooms, as emcees. Our gala celebrated not only our own awardwinning designers, but also celebrated the life of Dorothy Draper, recognizing that she started the first interior design firm in the country 90 years ago. Bill entertained us with pictures and details of Ms. Draper’s life and designs.

Alyshaan Fine Rugs was our Platinum Sponsor and owner, Saeed Aslam, shared information about Alyshaan, as well as their charitable contributions made in ASID’s name, including Smile Train. Through Smile Train, a $250 contribution can correct a cleft lip deformity for a child. Saeed challenged each of us to participate by donating to this worthy cause. Alyshaan will match up to 20 donations made by ASID members. If you would like to make a donation, or for more information, send an email to info@alyshaan.com. Additionally, Alyshaan contributed thousands of dollars in prizes and drawings throughout the evening.

Thanks to Alyshaan for videotaping our awards! For those of you who missed it (or those who want to relive it), it can be viewed on YouTube by searching for 2013 Design Excellence Awards. There’s a link on our Website, www. asidaznorth.org, as well.

We were excited to welcome another Fellow into our chapter! LuAnn Thoma-Holec, FASID was one of four fellows selected in the entire country in 2013! Read more about LuAnn and this special award on page 8.

It takes an entire year to create a gala! So a big thank you goes out to our Awards Committee who made this beautiful evening a success! They created a beautiful evening and worked hard at managing every detail, which involved taking in the entry submissions, setting up the judging process, selecting the venue, overseeing the awards show, and coordinating volunteers. We echo the sentiments and kudos we heard at the end of the evening: “well done!”

Student Chapter Events

We extend a warm welcome to all our student members and advisors. We are looking forward to another exciting year of student activities. Mark your calendars for the following events:

■ S TUD en T Ch APT e R l e AD e RS h IP gAT he RI ng –oCT o B e R 18 T h @5:30 PM l o CATI on: TBD

This meeting is for student board officers and the advisors from each school to discuss the relationship between the schools and ASID Arizona North Chapter. We work very closely with National to ensure our students are getting all of the benefits of their membership. Each campus should be sure to have their elections and officers in place prior to the meeting. Please send the names of the officers to Tabitha Evans, Student Affairs Chair - tab@tabithaevansdesign.com.

■ Re A lWo R l D De SI gn Week – n o V e MB e R 3-9, 2013

Registration is open for students and designers to participate in RealWorld Design Week. The week will be set aside for students to be partnered with a designer for a day to get a view of working in the design field. We encourage students to sign up as soon as possible so that we can recruit as many designers as needed to give each student this experience. Design activities you will be exposed to can include shadowing a designer on a job site, visits to showrooms, portfolio review, time in the designer’s studio, and more.

This experience offers a valuable glimpse at the difference between educational preparation and working in the real world. Consider getting involved in this professional development activity that integrates skills learned in school to the real world of design practice.

■ Ch AR e TT e – S TUD en T De SI gn Co MP e TITI on –Fe BRUAR y 8 T h @ Me SA Co MMU n IT y College

This full-day competition teams students from the various student campuses to create innovative designs. Groups will work on a given design problem and create concept statements, floor plans, elevations, and renderings to show their solutions. The design problem will be based on skills aligned to the NCIDQ exam. Don’t miss this chance to work in a team setting, to be mentored by practicing designers, and to spend a day having fun and networking. The winners of this year’s Charette won tickets to attend the Design Excellence Awards Gala.

■ Vol U n T ee RI ng g IV e S yo U M o R e F o R yo UR M e MB e RS h IP

All students are encouraged and welcomed to participate on ASID Arizona North Chapter committees during the year. The more you do, the more you get out of your membership. We will award Advancement Scholarships to active graduating students that pay their first year of practitioner level dues. Don’t miss out on this opportunity.
