LIFe ALwAyS SPeeDS UP THIS TIMe OF year, doesn’t it? The flurry of back to school activities, costumes, and family gatherings keeps designers busy not only with their own lives, but their clients’ lives.

Some of you know how much I personally enjoy the fantasy and magic of Halloween. Our October membership meeting touched on that as we held a costume drive for the children living in a family-oriented homeless shelter, UMOM. UMOM is once again the non-profit that our chapter is supporting in the upcoming year. We also are supporting Aunt Rita’s Foundation. Supported by our chapter two years ago, Aunt Rita’s Foundation provides HIV/AIDS awareness and education through fund-raising events and has asked our chapter to join them in a fund-raising event this winter.

Arizona North Chapter, more so than many other chapters in the country, has weathered the brunt of a bad economy and still comes out on top.You are a member of one of the strongest chapters in the country. We are financially sound, have expanded our community support, and are rolling out programs and events to support new business models for designers.

Your Board’s priorities for the upcoming year are improved communications, better programs, and strong student support. You will see programs that are exceptional in the next few months that will be hosted in unique venues. Our long-term members have asked for advanced educational programs and business management/transition education for mature business entities, and we are responding.

However, our Board is made up of eight members total. We need your help to roll out these ambitious programs that will support the hundreds of members in our chapter.Volunteer positions include short-term (a month or two) activities as well as being part of a team that works together regularly throughout the year. Do you want to help with one or more membership meetings? We have a place for you. Do you want to be part of the Communications team? Join us. Is Education your passion? Consider joining the committee for Professional Development Day (it will be completely different this year—help make it exciting)!

to volunteer, call the office at 602.569.8916 or email at info@asidaznorth.org.

Remember, we have a place for you!

IT wAS My FIRST TIMe ATTenDIng THe DeSIgn Excellence Awards Gala after an eight-year absence. When I attended back in 2004, it was held at the Ritz-Carton. Enthused to be a part of planning the “big” event, I decided I would volunteer to be a part of the Design Excellence Awards Committee. Over the past year, there was so much planning that went on to host the Awards Gala, such as receiving the entries, categorizing the entries, coordinating the food tasting, designing the bouquets, picking the right venue and entertainment, etc.; the list goes on. I cannot extend my gratitude enough for the Committee Chairs, Amy Strang, Allied ASID and Debbie English, Allied ASID for going above and beyond in coordinating and planning this year’s red carpet event at the Arizona Biltmore. So, if you missed it, we’re publishing all the winners here in this quarter’s Design Excellence Award issue.

Also, I want to take this moment to thank Michael Clare, Industry Partner for contributing his time as our beloved Editor for the past year. Michael, you will be dearly missed and I have huge shoes to fill. You’ve done an excellent job organizing and managing our articles to be published and printed in our Chapter’s Desert Design magazine.

Speaking of magazines and other publications, we are entering into a new era of going digital. iPads, smart phones, Kindles, tablets, etc. are very popular and are now used in every household. Technology is changing our world and we need to adjust to it. Don’t get me wrong, I love my paper as much as everyone, however…. I now enjoy taking one device to hold it all instead of 5-6 magazines tucked under my arm. Everything is now at my fingertips! It’s a digital revolution and strategically, we as a Chapter are taking steps towards this. As a result, the Desert Design magazine will soon become a digital publication. This will allow us to provide links for our advertisements and articles, register for events, follow us on our social media sites, and much more. So don’t worry, it won’t be overnight and we’ll still publish hard copies. This is a work in progress; we hope to have our first digital issue out sometime next year.

To kick off this 2012-2013 fiscal year, we have several fascinating and distinguished venues lined up. Gretchen Palmer, Allied ASID, Membership Director, and Naomi Anderson, IP, Director at Large are planning exciting monthly membership meetings to be held at various locations throughout the Valley.

In addition, we will be hosting a series of new technology luncheons to be held throughout the year. These luncheons will give you the opportunity to learn how to use technology to your advantage. Trust me; you won’t want to miss these exhilarating events! I hope to see you there.

Sincerely,

We exPeRIenCeD AnOTHeR yeAR OF BeAUTy AT ASID’S DeSIgn exCeLLenCe AwARDS gALA held at the lovely Arizona Biltmore. The architecture there is classic and beautiful, the attendees were beautiful, and of course the design entries and award winners were beautiful.

Karen Romersa of Your Source and Roland Arnold of Arizona Tile once again emceed our gala to much laughter and applause. It was a special evening as Christine Piotrowski, FASID, author and former chapter president, acknowledged our newest Fellow, Linda Heinz, FASID. We were honored to have Linda Barkman, Editor of Phoenix Home & Garden magazine (an Industry Partner and our Media Sponsor) address the audience.

AZADI Fine Rugs, as our benefactor sponsor, brought in the “Wheel of Fortune” with Jewell Blair, Allied ASID, Professional Development Director, winning the prize (as well as winning a couple of design awards—this was Jewell’s first time entering the design competitionCongrats, Jewell!).

Another first-time entrant was Charles Glover, Allied ASID, of Charles Glover Interiors. And guess what? Charles won first place AND Best in Show – Residential! See his design on the cover of this magazine. You know the old refrain, “You have to enter to win.” Maybe next year it will be you! If you haven’t entered this competition previously, think about entering in 2013.

Long-time member, past chapter president, past National officer, LuAnn Thoma-Holec, ASID of Thoma-Holec Design, LLC won Best in Show – Commercial for one of her her beautiful senior living facilities. e HAV e K i CK e D OFF t H e school year with a bang! Board members welcomed new interior design students as well as returning students with presentations in class. We handed out welcome packets filled with goodies and most importantly distributed the student membership web addresses for joining ASID www.asid.org/join and our active Facebook page. As part of our membership drive, the Student Board set up tables with computers for students to enroll in ASID between classes. We were a force to be reckoned with in our new red ASID/SCC t-shirts. The feedback was great with over 20 new members signed up in less than 24hrs!

Student Chapter

On J ULY 30, t H e Art i nstit U te of Phoenix was notified by The Accreditation Commission of the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) that they had completed their review of our interior design program and voted to grant us full accreditation for the maximum six years. A big thanks to Dr. Meryl Epstein, our Dean of Academic Affairs and to Lead Instructor, Maryse Jospitre, who did an incredible job leading the team. She was assisted by the awesome Interior Design team members: Associate Professor, Cindy Stedman, Associate Professor, Alex Simon, Bob Adams, M.F.A., Denise Walton, ASID, Diane Kempton, and Miho Schoettker, who all worked so hard in preparation for the past 6 years and during the successful site visit in February. Most of all, a really big shout out goes to our dedicated ID students, both current and past, who contributed so many fine examples of their work outcomes to meet the CIDA standards.

We are very proud of our former Interior Design Academic Director, Carol Morrow, ASID, Ph.D. for her recent ASID 2012 Presidential Citation award as the 2012 Designer of Distinction. Her strong vision and accomplishments at The Art Institute of Phoenix continue to inspire our many graduates and will also have a positive effect on our program for many years. Congratulations Carol.

The Art Institute of Phoenix ASID Interior Design Group has recently gone through a lot of changes and have elected a few new members to the board. President: Amber Rice, Communications: Alma Gonzalez, Treasurer: Alya Amsden, Secretary: Aurora Arce, ASID & IIDA Liaison: Erin Stahlbuck, and Special Events/ Fundraising: Jackie Ulloa. The entire club is excited and is looking forward to all the possible events we might take part in this year. We are also looking forward to doing some charity work for an Art Institute of Phoenix Interior Design Alumni and US Military Veterans. The year is full of many exciting possibilities.
