Azle ready to celebrate this weekend Concert, Follow The Flag will draw thousands to Central Park BY MARK K. CAMPBELL The lake is full, the park is cleaned up, the musicians are coming, and the fireworks are ready. Whatever you think of the status of America, this weekend is a fi tting time to celebrate what is good about it – and you can do so with thousands of fellow Texans (and a few visitors.) Friday, July 3 sees the continuation of the summer-long Music in the Park series. Performing from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Central Park amthitheater will be Aurora Bleu, a group specializing in rockabilly, swing, blues, and jazz. That event, like everything this weekend, is free. Bottled water is provided and last week during the Eagles tribute band Fastlane’s performance, you could score a popcicle, too. The real blowout arrives on Saturday, July 4 – that’s when the annual Follow The Flag celebration begins at 7 and runs until 10. Also at Central Park, 263 Main Street, FTF is famed for having a massive fi reworks show at the conclusion of the day’s events. Before the booms arrive, the expected thousands in attendance at the Christian-based extravaganza can hear a trio of music groups play. FTF offers a slew of free food and drinks – everything from hot dogs to snow cones to iced tea. Scholarships will be awarded and the annual Lew Shafer Award passed out to someone who has gone above and beyond for his fellow man. Then, at dark, the fireworks spectacular begins.

BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN It was mostly good news for local entities, tax-wise, including Azle. The city showed the smallest increase, but still beat the statewide average for June. Its June revenue of $183,337 is up 8.26 percent from $169,339 in June 2014, and its year-to-date revenue of $1,108,206 is up 5.60 percent from 2014 YTD totals of $1,049,384. Azle’s Crime Control and Prevention District saw June revenue of $36,822, up 12.79 percent from June 2014 revenue of $32,646. That puts the district up 8.63 percent for calendar 2015 with $211,258 compared with $194,464 through June 2014. The city’s Municipal Development District fared even better, with $39,909 sales tax revenue for June. That’s up 28.73 percent from $31,001 in June 2014. Year-to-date, the district has accumulated $222,434, up 19.81 percent from $185,652 for the fi rst five month of 2014. Elsewhere, just three entities saw declines in state sales tax revenue in June compared with June 2014: Lakeside, Pelican Bay, and Parker County. Parker County’s 2.49 percent dip in June revenue, from $582,145 in June 2014 to $567,650 was not enough to take the county’s year-to-date revenue into the red. With $3,867,157 in the coffers so far in 2015, the county remains up 11.20 percent compared with the same period in 2014. Other local taxing entities fared much better. The city of Reno recorded June revenue of $7,439, - 23.73 percent more than $6,012 it received for June 2014. Year-to-date, the city has received $51,801 in sales tax revenue, up 37.05 percent from $37,796 for the same period in 2014. Sanctuary’s June sales tax revenue of $1,689 is 30 percent more than its June 2014 revenue of $1,299. That brings the city’s calendar year revenue to $8,700 – 32.54 percent more than the fi rst fi ve months in 2014, when it received $6,564. Two thieves strike vehicles in rural areas A vehicle on Miramar Circle, west of Azle, is one of several that was vandalized in a theft spree. While the Azle ISD/Summer Seamless Meal Program has run its course in some locations, three other sites are still serving. Meals are provided free for all children ages 1 to 18 years old. Adults can buy breakfasts for $1 and lunch for $2.50. Walnut Creek Elementary, 1010 Boyd Road, is still serving breakfast Monday-Thursday from 7-8:30 a.m. and lunch from 10 a.m. until noon. At Pelican Bay Park, 1300 Pelican Circle, lunch is available Monday-Thursday from 11 a.m. until noon. During that same time frame, lunch is served at Castle Hills Mission House, 401 Beverly Road. Cabin getting historical marker The Slover School-Robinson Cabin is one of the latest buildings in the state to be singled out by the Texas Historical Commission for recognition. The building, at 1101 Wright Lane in the Silver Creek area off Highway 730 South, will receive a historical marker at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 12. Parker County Historical Commissioner Harold Lawrence will speak at the unveiling. The cabin was recognized for being “an important and educational part of local history” and “a significant part of Texas history.” Two criteria must be met for a subject to receive a historical marker. One is historical significance and the other is age. There are three types of markers: • Subject – posted solely for

public educational; they are most common • Recorded Texas Historical Markers – a legal designation for structures; they come with a degree of protection if they prove “architectural integrity” • Historic Texas Cemetery – histories must be researched in detail Texas, with 15,000 markers, has more than any other state. The Historical Commission reviews around 300 applications annually. Obituaries Duane Auvenshine 2015
Duane Auvenshine, 63, passed away on June 22, 2015, in Azle. A graveside service was held in Veal Station on Friday, June 26, at 10 a.m. A visitation
was held on Thursday, June 25, from 6-8 p.m. at Azleland Cemetery, under the direction of Roberts Family Affordable Funeral Home. Duane loved music and played drums. He was a master carpenter and a great and loving son, brother, and devoted father and granddad. Survivors include his mother, Billie; his daughter, Lindsay; his sister, Carolyn; his brothers, David and Dan; his grandchild, Parker; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Robert Lee “Bob” Bettis 1946-2015 Robert Lee “Bob” Bettis of Azle, Texas, went to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on June 23, 2015. Services were Friday, June 26, 2015 at First United Methodist Church of Azle where he was a lifelong member, with Dr. Scott Youngblood offi ciat ing. Burial was at Ash Creek Cemetary. Bob was born on Feb. 1, 1946 to J.R. and Betty Jean Cannon Bettis. He was a lifelong resident of Azle and graduated from Azle High School in 1964. He retired from the Tarrant Regional Water District, where he was Lake Superintendent. He enjoyed team roping and hunting. He was a loving husband,

Powerhouse: Azle wrestling program recognized as one of the best in the state BY MARK K. CAMPBELL Wrestling became a sanctioned University Interscholastic League sport in 1999. Not long after that, Azle athletes began making noise in Austin – and, while the venues have changed, AHS’ annual presence as a top wrestling power in Texas has not. The early years The Azle Wrestling Club had been winning a slew of matches throughout the state. In UIL competition in the 1999-2000 school year, those successful club efforts became magnifi ed. The Hornets were coached by Don Morland that initial season, and he had some talent to work with. One athlete advanced to state that year, freshman Chas Skelly. Competing at 103 pounds, he came within 17 seconds of winning the gold. Brighter days were ahead for the Hornet. In 2001, Skelly returned to Austin with teammate Shelby Lauderdale; neither placed. Then came 2002. Three Azle wrestlers, now coached by Ron MonDragon, reached championship matches – Skelly, Lauderdale, and Will Rowe. The trio all had to settle for silver medals. Skelly’s loss was especially painful because it came in overtime and was ended by a referee calling a technical violation. In 2003, Skelly and Lauderdale were seniors – it was now or never. And Skelly fi nally got his – and Azle’s – fi rst gold medal. He beat the wrestler who had stopped the Hornet in ‘02,
ever for the Hornets at state – and that was without regional champion Michael Hortman who had to withdraw with an injury. Coach Thwaits took four qualifi ed AHS athletes to Austin’s Delco Center in 2007. Martin Dick won the bronze, losing only an opening – and controversial – 1-0 match. Then, in 2008, with new coaches Chris and Monica Allen leading, Dick earned another bronze as a senior. Nick Killip finished fourth. In 2009, the fi rst Lady Hornet reached the state level, Crystalee Shepard, going 0-2. Two Hornets went to Austin with her; Aaron Ryals took third.

having competitors impress at every state tournament. Last February, the high standards set by the Allens and Azle were not only met but surpassed. Two AHS wrestlers won gold medals – senior Justin Scarbro and sophomore Lauren Dale. That brought the total of golds for Azle to six by fi ve athletes. Add in 10 silvers and 8 bronzes – not to mention 15 fi nishes in places 4 through 6 place – and it’s clear that the AHS program is not only here to stay but mighty. And expect only greater things in the future.

Answering: What's The positive power wrong with the world? of social media
Most of the time, people complain about social media like Facebook and Twitter – that it’s full of hate and anger and cat videos. But we recently saw a different, positive use of the technology. On a sultry, sunny June 23 morning, we got a phone call that an injured solider was returning home to Reno. Laramie Dockery was to land at Love Field in Dallas in a couple of hours then be led by the Patriot Guard all the way to his home with a detour through Main Street in Azle. That’s cool, we thought and we posted it on the News’ Facebook page and on our Twitter account. From there, the power of the people – wielding technology for good not evil – took over. Folks began telling other folks through sharing our post; it went onward an even 200 times. Then Main Street began filling up with cars. Men, women, and children – many with U.S. flags and or homemade signs – stood near the steamy pavement, waiting for our local hero to pass by. We kept posting to let people know that Laramie was getting closer to town. I stood in the back of my pickup and shot a 64 second video of the procession – a beaming, waving Laramie in a convertible with blaring fire and emergency vehicles leading and trailing. And along that route: Scores and scores of locals who had mobilized with remarkable speed and goodwill to say thanks to someone they almost certainly didn’t know personally. I posted that video and it got shared 201 times on Facebook along with 492 likes and 27 clearly heartfelt comments to a solider who paid a big price to keep us safe. Social media isn’t just a place for venting your anger on gay marriage or the Confederate flag. It can make a difference in a positive way – as the good people of Azle proved June 23. MKC

Chesterton (1874 – 1936) was an English writer, lay theologian, poet, philosopher, dramatist, journalist, orator, literary and art critic, biographer, and Christian apologist. In 1910, he wrote a book entitled What's Wrong with the World?"The story is told that The Times once sent out an inquiry to famous authors, asking the question, “What’s wrong with the world today?” Chesterton responded simply, “Dear Sir, I am. Yours, G.K. Chesterton.” What's wrong with the world? I am – me, myself – no matter how good I think I am in comparison to someone else. My life matters so much to God that He doesn't lower His standards for me to anything less than what He has revealed in His written revelation of Himself – the Bible. And if I want my country to be what He intends, it will begin with me – right here, right now, right where I live. It is still His world. Names on public buildings often tell a great story
W
hen we drive by a civic building or a school with a person's name on it, do we ever wonder what that person did to receive the honor? While driving with a friend to Dallas recently on I-30 we passed a school in Grand Prairie. “I used to teach there,” my friend, Lupe Ortiz, said. She told me a little bit about Hector Perez Garcia, after whom the school was named. Later, I looked up more information. Perhaps the most memorable contribution Garcia made was the creation of the American G. I. Forum, an organization to help Mexican-American veterans obtain rights being denied to them. At least 500 chapters exist today with over 160,000 members. Garcia was born in Mexico January 17, 1914. His father was a college professor, and his mother a schoolteacher. Because of the excesses and dangers of the Mexican Revolution, in 1917 Garcia's parents fled to the United States with their seven children. They settled in Mercedes, Texas located in

the Rio Grande Valley 25 miles east of McAllen. When they arrived, the family had to take manual labor jobs to survive. Later, Hector's father worked at a dry goods business with his brothers. The parents taught their children that a good education was important. In fact, six of the Garcia children, including Hector, acquired degrees in medicine. Hector was valedictorian of his high school graduating class in Mercedes. His father cashed in an insurance policy to help send him to junior college in Edinburg. Hector later studied at the University of Texas where he had been admitted under a quota system that allowed only one Mexican-American a year. After completing his medical residency, he volunteered in 1942 for the Army. He was discharged with the rank of major in 1945, having been awarded a Bronze Star for service in North Africa and Italy. He began a private medical practice with a brother in Corpus Christi. There he became active in the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and served as its chapter president in 1947.

Through his work with LULAC, he began helping Mexican-American veterans file claims with the Veterans Administration. The incident concerned the body of a young Mexican-American, Felix Longoria, of Three Rivers, Texas, a private in World War II who was killed by a Japanese sniper. When his body was belatedly returned home, the director of the only funeral home in town refused to let his service take place in

the chapel. Dr. Garcia in Jan. 1949 wrote then Senator Lyndon B. Johnson about the situation. Johnson made arrangements that the body of Longoria be buried in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. The publicity brought attention to the new G. I. Forum, and its membership grew rapidly, spreading to other states. The Forum continued to fight discrimination in schools, farm labor, hospitals. Because of his activism and acquaintance with Johnson, the latter, as president, appointed Garcia in 1967 as alternate ambassador to the United Nations to seek better relations with Latin America and Spain. In 1968 President Johnson appointed him to the United States Commission on Civil Rights. Then in 1984 President Ronald Reagan presented Dr. Garcia with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the first Mexican-American to receive it. Yale University created an endowed chair in his honor in 1985, and the same year city officials of Corpus Christi named a park for him. The Corpus Christi Post Office was named

for him in 1988, and the National Hispanic Leadership Conference gave him their Hispanic Heritage Award in 1989. Then Pope John Paul II awarded him the Order of St. Gregory the Great that year. A nine-foot statue of Garcia was installed at the Corpus Christi campus of Texas A & M in June, 1996. Dr. Garcia died July 26, 1996 at age, 82, but honors kept coming. A PBS documentary – Justice for My People: The Dr. Hector P. Garcia Story” – was broadcast nationally. The Texas Legislature in 2009 created “ Dr. Hector P. Garcia Day” to be celebrated the third Wednesday in September each year. His hometown of Mercedes renamed their public library after him, and in 1910 the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution honoring him for his contributions to the Hispanic community and his efforts to combat discrimination. North Carolina having real-life Shark Week
T
his summer is the 40th anniversary of Jaws. Man, did that movie have an impact on a slew of people back in 1975. It’s a cheat to watch it on TV; like The Exorcist, some movies were made to be seen in the dark with a bunch of other screaming people. For both movies, it was fun ON YOUR and thrilling to see it originally. In those days, you went back to MARK theaters again to watch how otherfi rst timers freaked out at what you Mark K. Jaws was a wonder and, thanks to its PG rating, all kinds of folks – and a zillion kids – queued up and, for some, got such a shock that they still won’t venture into the ocean. The movie premiered in Dallas and director Steven Spielberg was tremendously worried that it would fail, that audiences would laugh at the mechanical shark. Hardly. Today, there might be a reason to consider maybe not heading out into the coastal breakers. In North Carolina alone, six humans have been attacked in shallow water, including two teenagers who had arms amputated. Even if you haven’t seen Jaws, such incidents certainly give one pause at the water’s edge. I have been “swimming with the sharks” – in Belize on vacation where you jump off a boat and watch a bunch of sharks swim all around, totally uninterested in the humans gawking at them. Still, it’s pretty creepy being in the water with a slew of sharks. They’re sharks! An ocean trip awaits for me later this summer. I’d rather take my chances with sharks than the oil bubbling up in Galveston and the fecal matter washed into the Gulf of Mexico by flooding. Now, that’ll make you scream in horror.

Ted 2: Simply ‘1’ of the worst movies ever made The seemingly impossible has occurred: A worse movie than Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 (Movie Man No. 1136, 3) has arrived. Ted 2 is awful – so horrible that it goes down as one of the all-time terrible movies in the history of cinema.
year – any! – it would’ve been hands down Worst of Year. But Big Mamma’s House 2 edged it out, winning the only battle of the 1s. The fourth movie tagged with the lowest-of-the-low rating was dumped into theaters in 2007. Delta Farce also starred a guy who was cashing in on his burgeoning fame – Larry the Cable Guy. His military movie was mind-numbingly unfunny. Now, eight years later, here is another 1 in Ted 2. Most bad movies have some sort of value to edge them up to at least a 2. Not so here. The Movie Man has suffered through an astonishing array of sorry movies; through the decades, he has seen 30 stinkers rated 2 – including bombs like Sphere (1998, MM #220), Isn’t She Great (2000, MM #324), Norbit (2007, MM #704), and The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009, MM #853). All those 2s are bad – but they’re not Ted 2 bad.
About the film The Movie Man isn’t one to give out many 1s – it is far and away the number readers are least likely to see. (Well, there has never been nor will ever be a 10 – only Movie Wife merits that high cotton rating.) This is Movie Man No. 1,146 and Ted 2 is only the fi fth 1, dating back to 1993. Incredibly, two of those other four 1s came out within weeks of one another – meaning, against all odds, a 1 was not the Worst of Year in 2006. The fi rst Movie Man 1 went to Bio-Dome (1995, MM #110). In those ancient days, Pauly Shore was an MTV personality and he had a string of successful – and mostly bad – movies. Even today, Bio-Dome remains unwatchable. Movie Man riage is to have a baby – something a teddy bear can’t make happen. And, after a grody misadventure at a fertility clinic, neither can best friend John (Mark Wahlberg). So the couple decides to adopt. That’s when governmental bureaucracy discovers that Ted is not a human. A court case led by lawyer Samantha (Amanda Seyfried) ends up as a loss, and Ted is deemed to be property, not a person. McFarlane’s core followers, late teens/early twentysomething males plus, surprisingly two elderly, white-haired seventysomething women – that never laughed a single time. The silence was incredible and uncomfortable. Plenty of those in attendance really wanted to laugh, coming in with high hopes (judging from the pre-show chatter). Yet, every attempt at humor onscreen was an embarrassing failure. McFarlane has the reputation of returning again and again to his same staple of jokes and that happens here. A call-back to a previous routine is one thing but going back over and over a topic is just unfunny. You expect crudeness and juvenile “humor” from McFarlane, but this is sub-junior high stuff. Especially sad for the Movie Man was seeing Patrick Warburton (Seinfeld, Rules of Attraction) humiliating himself. It was painful. The rating Ted 2 is the hardest of Rs. The f-bombs are non-stop and the humorless situations are often based on some sort of body fluid or reproductive organ. Over and over and over.

Then, the stinger (the fi nal scene following the end credits) arrives with a staggering Neeson all beaten up and returning the mangled box of the cereal back to the store.

Making ‘friends’ – 1.5 million of them Local Facebook sensation finds joy in helping others BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN
Chances are high your life has already been touched in some way by Courtney Luper. Maybe you’re her friend or follower on Facebook – after all, she has 1.5 million of them. (Well, actually, 1.494 million but her numbers rise daily.) Maybe you’ve seen one of her delicious recipes or inspirational messages reposted by a friend. Luper has become a social media sensation just by trying to help herself and others. And she lives in Azle. Life of struggle Luper was raised in Lake Worth, although she’s proud to say she was born right here at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Azle (which was called Eagle Mountain Area Suburban Hospital or EMASH in those days). After dropping out of Lake Worth High School before graduating, she and her two children soon found themselves in a failing and sometimes abusive relationship. Luper got out of that relationship, fell in love, and tried again. Unfortunately, it was another abusive situation. She and her boys spent a few nights in women’s shelters during those times. Five years ago, she was divorced and struggling just to make ends meet. A lifelong Christian, Luper says she never gave up her faith. But by that time, she felt beaten down and had no confi-
dence. At just 5 feet in height, she weighed 308 pounds. A hard worker Luper always worked. In fact, her closest friend, Shanda Portales, says Luper is the hardest worker she’s ever known. Portales remembers a time when Luper had lost her car because she couldn’t make the payments. “Her mom would take her to the bus stop in Lake Worth, and she rode the bus to near DFW Airport, but it didn’t go to where she worked,” Portales said. As tears rose in her eyes, she said “Courtney ran from the bus stop to her job every day.” Always good in sales, Luper was making marketing calls for an insurance company while studying to get her insurance license. “I always wanted to better myself,” she says. “At times, I thought about applying for housing assistance, but I was afraid I’d become dependent on that and never want more out of life.” Facing another in a long series of evictions, she signed up to become a distributor of Skinny Fiber produced by the Skinny Body Care company. “A friend had introduced me to the product, and I liked it, but I didn’t think people would buy from me – I’m a big girl,” Luper said. “But I figured out I could sell it online, and people might buy from me. I just hoped to sell enough to pay for my own

I literally gave it all to God that night,” she said. “I just cried out to him. I felt like a hamster on a wheel, I felt so unworthy. I couldn’t look anyone in the eye. I was ashamed. Something was going on “online” and her mom insisted she drop everything and come home. She went straight to her parents’ home down the street from her house. “The Febreeze post had gone viral – I mean it just went nuts!” Luper said. “I had thousands of friend requests on Facebook, thousands of people asking to join my weight loss support group. I really couldn’t believe it.” She and her mom went to work, and even her dad helped. There was so much to do that Luper literally didn’t go back to her own house for a month. That Febreeze post has now been shared 775,000 times. Some of her other posts have more than a million shares each. One post – “80 Uses For Coconut Oil” – has been shared more than two million times. But other things were happening at the same time. Luper’s check from Skinny Fiber the prior week had been $50. The week of the Febreeze post, she got a check from the company for $1,200. ed.” One day, Luper got a private message from someone who said “I think you’re my neighbor.” That one freaked her out a little, Luper said, laughing. But the woman said she had been outside a few minutes earlier and thought she recognized Luper. “You were outside with some other people, and you hugged a girl,” the message said. “Then I saw your license plate, and I knew it was you.” It turns out, the woman really is Luper’s neighbor – in fact, she’s a principal at an Azle elementary school. They’ve since become real-life friends. Portales says her friend’s success has come from hard work, perseverance, being genuine and real; most of all, though, it’s because of her faith.
As Luper’s business grew, so did her confidence; she has lost 100 pounds and happily displays her “before and after” photos. That house she was about to be evicted from in April 2013? Luper paid cash for it by the end of 2013, and her sons live in it now. She’s appeared on Balancing Act on Lifetime Television. Now she owns her dream car – a Ford Mustang – and lives in a nice but modest home. Recipes, everyday ponderings, and positive messages have brought Courtney Luper 1.5 million Facebook followers. “She said she wanted me to know I had saved her life. It’s so fulfilling to know that you can make a difference in someone’s life,” Luper said. “I think the greatest thing we can give anyone is hope – there is always hope,” Luper said. Another woman, who is wheelchair-bound, had gotten very heavy – so heavy she was told she could never have children. Through her relationship with Luper, that woman has lost 120 pounds and has a new baby. Luper said now that she enjoys a financial stability she had never known, she wants to give back. “I’d like to go ride that bus I used to ride and just encourage people – maybe take some gifts or a little money and just give it away randomly,” she said. “And I’d really like to go
