Eagle Mountain, Shady Grove Park open again Water levels had forced closures BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN It’s not often in North Texas that people get excited about how many days we’ve gone without rain. We’re usually complaining that it’s been too long – especially in the summer months. And, we may get back to that point, but for now, North Texans are rejoicing about sunshine and full lakes. May 2015 was the wettest month on record for the contiguous 48 states since records began being kept in 1895, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). An average of 4.36 inches of rain and/or snow fell across the lower 48 states. Most of it was concentrated in Oklahoma and Texas, where, as one NOAA spokesperson said, the fiveyear drought was washed away in one month. This barricade and all others came down Tuesday, June 9 when Eagle Mountain Lake was reopened to boat traffic after hundreds of PLEASE SEE LAKE, PAGE 3A. thousands of gallons of water was released. Shady Grove Park was also reopened entirely.

Golf and kids

A Monster of a Festival

Landers still all about helping kids get into the sport BY MARK K. CAMPBELL If a kid doesn't have a golf club and wants to learn the sport, Robert Landers will hook him or her up. Speaking to the Azle Rotary Club June 4, the former Senior PGA Tour player said he currently has 5,000 clubs in his barn – sticks he often refurbishes and remakes into clubs suitable for use. “I'm not shy about asking to get clubs,” he said. Landers, a self-taught golfer, gained national fame for his highly unlikely ascent to the professional golf ranks. He said when he neared the upper reaches of the professional level, commentators on the Golf Channel once noted that he had about as much chance of playing in a single tournament on the Senior Tour “as the Three Stooges do in winning an Academy Award.” Landers played 57 pro tourneys. (And, for what it's worth, the Three

Stooges were nominated for an Oscar in 1934 – but did not win.) A life-long Azle man Landers is all about Azle. He attended school here, beginning in 1949 when all grades walked Rock School halls. He graduated Azle High in 1962. Landers said he has spent years teaching hundreds of young folks – and plenty of adults – the game of golf. If a kid didn't have clubs, Landers made sure they got some, free. He said among the youngsters that have come under his tutelage is current LPGA pro Angela Stanford. Landers volunteers with Azle High School golfers, assisting current coach Bob Gilbreath for whom Landers had high praise. Riley Sparks, Landers' great-grandPLEASE SEE GOLF, PAGE 3A.

Lake, park reopened n LAKE, FROM PAGE ONE.

“It’s like one disaster ending a catastrophe,” NOAA climate scientist Jake Crouch said. Around Eagle Mountain Lake, water enthusiasts and lake-livers went from dismay at the idea of another lakeless summer, to excitement when the lake filled, back to dismay that the lake was closed due to high water, flooding, and floating debris. But Tuesday, June 9, EML was reopened to boat traffic by Tarrant Regional Water District (TRWD). Azle’s Shady Grove Park is open again, as well. TRWD officials urge caution on the lake as debris – both visible and underwater – remains a danger. Interesting facts Laura Blaylock, manager of energy and water resources for TRWD, provided some fascinating facts about how the recent rains have affected Eagle

Mountain Lake. Blaylock notes that her calculations are in acre feet, defined as: a unit of volume equal to the volume of a sheet of water one acre (0.405 hectare) in area and one foot (30.48 cm) in depth; 43,560 cubic feet (1233.5 cu m). • So far during 2015, EML has risen from a low point of 638.06 mls (mean sea level) to a high point of 651.4 mls for a total rise of 13.34 feet. Pool elevation for EML is 649.10. On Tuesday, June 8, the lake was at 649.96 or 0.86 feet above pool elevation. • Rainfall at EML since Jan. 1 is 26.07 inches, and about half that amount arrived in May. • In March, TRWD began pumping water into EML in an effort to raise the lake level. About 21,838 acre feet of water was pumped into the lake before rains made pumping no longer necessary. • Meanwhile, upstream at Lake Bridgeport, 24.05 inches of rain has fallen since Jan. 1.

Again, about half that amount fell in May. Lake Bridgeport rose more than 27 feet thanks to rainfall in its watershed. • As a result of being overfull, Lake Bridgeport has discharged 165,592 acre feet of water through June 7. That water runs through the West Fork Trinity River into EML. • Total inflows into EML from the West Fork watershed are recorded at 404,996 acre feet (more than 132 billion gallons) and represent a combination of the rain that fell directly on the lake, discharges from Lake Bridgeport and Amon Carter Lake, as well as the whole surrounding watershed since May 11. • All that water has to go somewhere; EML has discharged 337,719 acre feet (more than 110 billion gallons) of water into Lake Worth through June 7. Keep up with what’s going on at Eagle Mountain Lake as well as other lakes in TRWD’s It’s okay to head back to Eagle Mountain Lake and Shady Grove Park now that subsystem at www.trwd.com. stantial amounts of water have been released. daughter, is on the Lady Hornet squad. And he helped direct Azle's Jessica Simants to the district championship where she fired a 74 on the final round to win by eight strokes. A recent tournament raised around $8,000 for the AHS golf team – essential because the usual squad fundraiser comes via hosting an annual tournament that got iced out earlier this year. As the season began, three members of this year's AHS team were arrived with juniorsized clubs; Landers saw that they were upgraded. He said that he might not be the best technical golfer but he knows the game. “You start at the hole and work back to the tee,” Landers said. He is often at Cross Timbers

Golf Course which is in “good shape” thanks to natural rain which magically seems to work better than sprinklers at keeping a course tip-top, he said. However, the cold spring has kept the greens from reaching their potential right now, he added. Still, CTGC is exceptional, and he credited current pro Keith Harris for that success. The course has some sort of fundraising tournament every week, Landers noted. Often when he’s at Cross Timbers – on the green, the range, or even the course – he’s helping out wherever he can. Especially children. Landers said he wants to see any kid who wants golf clubs get them – something he had done for years and will continue to do. And, he'll be happy to take Robert Landers, Azle's former golf pro, told Rotarians your clubs if you've got some about his desire to see that children get clubs free to extras. interest them in the sport. Two Texas A&M University students from Azle won academic honors for the Spring semester. David E. Newton, a junior studying renewable natural resources en route to a Bachelor of Science degree, was named to the Dean's Honor Roll. Also earning a berth on that elite roster was Megan R. Stewart, a senior seeking a Bachelor of Science in Recreation, Park & Tourism. Faced with a Drinking Problem? Perhaps Alcoholics Anonymous can help.

Martinez now a corporal BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN

The Azle Police Department promoted one officer and welcomed two new officers into the fold during the city council meeting June 2. Longtime Azle officer Richard Martinez was promoted to the rank of corporal. Martinez previously served the APD as both a corporal and a sergeant, but gave up his sergeant’s stripes for a position as lieutenant with the Hidalgo Police Department several years ago. After two years in Hidalgo, Martinez and his family opted to come “home.” Martinez has spent 24 of his 26 years in law enforcement with the Azle PD. He has been awarded numerous commendations, including Officer of the Year and Supervisor of the Year, the Lifesaving Award, and the Medal of Valor. The Senior Center has many activities to choose from including a variety of exercise levels, a ukulele group, computer classes, games, and more. For information about these activities or to make a reservation for a nutritious lunch, simply call 817-444-0070. We open at 9 a.m. each Monday through Friday and are located at 605 Southeast Parkway in Azle. You’ll be amazed to find that people you may not have seen in a long while are also a part of the Azle Senior Center – what a great way to get reacquainted! Last week, qualifying seniors received food from the Tarrant County Food Bank. Phyllis Nelson, a registered dietician

with the local hospital, spoke to seniors about the importance of vegetables in the diet. A chart was handed out that broke them down according to their nutritional value. The Center sponsored a movie matinee June 2 which was enjoyed by the ones who went to see Hot Pursuit. Friday, June 19 is the Center’s Patio Sale. This will be located in the patio area between the Senior Citizen building and the city offices. If you wish to make a donation of items, they will be gratefully accepted beginning June 15 (no clothing, please). The Center will have a special outing Monday, June 22 to the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens. The group will leave the Center at 1:30 p.m. If you wish to go, please contact the Center at 817-444-0070 to get on the list. See you soon at the active Azle Senior Center.

2014 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) The Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) is a regulation, passed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as part of the 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments, that requires all community water systems to provide their customers with an annual water quality report. With the CCR, communities benefit by acquiring a better understanding of their water suppliers and the processes involved, which allows them an opportunity to make an informed decision regarding their use of drinking water. The CCR is intended to provide important information about your drinking water and the efforts made by the City of Azle to provide safe drinking water. The report can be viewed on our website at http://www.cityofazle.org/ DocumentCenter/View/3378. A paper copy may be obtained at Azle City Hall or request a copy be mailed to you at no cost by calling 817-444-2541.

MGP begins work on fall show at June camp BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN

The last day of school was May 29, but members of the Marching Green Pride were back at Azle High School at 7 a.m. Tuesday, June 2. About 230 members of the band, including winds, percussion, and Colorguard, attended camp June 2-5 from 7 a.m.noon each day. At camp, band members focused on learning marching fundamentals and music technique exercises. They also began work on the music for the MGP’s 2015 marching show, called To The Edge. That’s because it’s a show AHS band directors Shawn and Kim Murphy promise will take spectators “to the edge” of their seats. “This Azle MGP marching

band is the strongest we have had in the five years we’ve been in Azle,” Kim Murphy said. “This year is a ‘state year,’ and we hope to make MGP history by earning a spot in the UIL State Marching Contest Finals. “Two years ago, the band placed 13th in state competition – the top 10 compete in the finals, and we are setting our goals high to help us get there.” The band will come back in August for two-a-days to build on its start and begin learning the drill to the marching show, Murphy added. The MGP Friends and Family Preview is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, August 21 at Hornet Field. A nominal admisBand Director Shawn Mur- sion fee will be charged, and phy puts campers through concessions and merchandise their paces at Azle High. will be available for purchase Photo by Carla Noah Stutsman as well.

Sympathy for the aging concert-goer – the Stones

W

hen you’re almost 59, you can look back and see that you were actually positioned to do some cool

stuff, but you didn’t. I was in film school at UT-Austin in the 1970’s – America’s greatest movie decade – but changed my major to journalism. I saw the rise of computers but invested most of my cash in Whataburgers and softball gloves. And I was young – 20’s/30’s – during a dynamic time of popular music on the planet. Yet, I almost never went to a concert. So, a zillion years later, here in 2015 I’m trying to make up for what I missed musically and am attending a slew of concerts. Recently, I’ve taken in Alice Coo-

per, Heart, the Who, Boz Scaggs, and, the Rolling Stones. Naturally, all these folks are a bit older and less-peppy – for the most part – than they would’ve been in their heyday of the 1970’s. I got tired of hearing old-timers say “you shoulda been there” when recanting their past concert experiences. I was determined to not die before I got to see bands that I have listened to for half a century. There are plenty of tales about those other concerts – Cooper was hilarious; Heart’s Ann Wilson still has it; the Who was absolutely incredible; and it took Scaggs forever to get to “Lido Shuffle” – but, as predicted, the Stones concert was a bona fide event. This was my first stadium concert. I bought a ticket on the day of the show and paid a tad less than face value. Armed with a parking pass, I made

The sound is horrible at AT&T, and, combined with the screaming guitars, it was sometimes hard to hear which time travel tune was being played, initially. The final songs were colossal. “Sympathy for the Devil” had the UTA choir behind it and onscreen visuals. I thought “Gimme Shelter” was the standout. And everyone got chills singing along with “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” – released 50 years ago that very day, June 6, 1965. Old people danced like they didn’t care who saw – because...they didn’t. A concert is much more than just the music, of course. And that was proven by the Stones: no, I wasn’t there in 1975 – but I was 40 years later. And it was still cool.

the grave mistake of driving to the east side of AT&T Stadium instead of the west side where my $43 parking spot awaited – about a mile from AT&T Stadium. ON YOUR (Fortunately, I had left MARK early because the Bride was Mark K. Campbell out of town on a church mission trip. [Yes, I get the irony that I was watching “Sympathy for the Devil” while my beloved was off doing the Lord’s work.]) After a sweaty, painful hike – I had hurt my calf running – I got inside the

massive building. Jerry’s Giant TV was turned off; I was glad I bought a seat that faced the stage head on. An incredible array of fans began arriving. Some had on old Stones concert shirts. Others dressed elaborately, including a 70-plus couple that was donned in long Union Jacks. Next to me were some thirtysomethings from Austin and on the other side a single 60-year-old woman from University Park. Right ahead were a grandfather, dad, and son – a triple generationsharing event that all would remember forever. The Stones came on about 9:20. By then, 60,000 people had found their seats. The classic songs piled on each other while Mick Jagger – at 71! – ran everywhere and a pair of Cryptkeepers – Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood – played really loudly and fantastically.

Letters to the Editor Clarifying the new ‘Campus Carry’ gun law particulars

required to carry their handguns in a concealed manner. They will not be able to carry their handguns openly where they may draw attention, cause concern, or disrupt learning. Why do licensed students and staff need the option to carry handguns on college campuses? It is their Constitutionally recognized God-given natural right. College campuses are targets of mass shootings, murders, sexual assaults, and other violent crimes. Permitting licensed students and staff to carry concealed handguns will make campuses safer. Potential criminals will be more apprehensive about attacking campuses, and students will be able to defend themselves more quickly, hopefully limiting or preventing innocent casualties. Please note that the new Campus Carry law will not go into effect until August 1, 2016 for colleges and August 1, 2017 for junior colleges. I would also like to point out that the Campus Carry law was passed along party lines. Republican lawmakers overwhelmingly voted for passage of the bill and most Democrats voted against it.

Dear Editor, I am writing to clarify a few facts about Texas Senate Bill 11, the “Campus Carry” law, recently passed by the Texas legislature. First, the new law will only permit licensed adult students, faculty, staff, and administrators who are 21 years or older to carry concealed handguns on college campuses. These students and staff will have taken a concealed handgun class, applied for the license, and passed a thorough FBI criminal background check. Not everyone will be allowed to carry handguns on campuses, only qualified law-biding citizens. Second, there will be limitations on where handguns can be carried on campuses. Private colleges will decide to allow handguns to be carried on their campuses or not. Public colleges will be able to place reasonable limits on where handguns may be carried. Faculty and staff will be subject to the personnel policies of their campuses. Third, students and staff will be

Huge Texas JA Ranch still owned by same family

P

ioneers, ranchers, and cattlemen often are remembered long after their death by the land or business they developed. Sometimes, though, the lasting result may have been due to the abilities of the widow they left behind. A fixture of West Texas success is the JA Ranch in the Texas Panhandle in Palo Duro Canyon. In 1883 when the ranch was at its largest, it covered 1,335,000 acres in six counties and ran a herd of 100,000 cattle. Is that Texasbig enough? John George Adair’s name became fixed to the ranch. The fact that it has lasted by that name and in the same family for almost a century and a half may be due to the man he negotiated with to manage it – Charles Goodnight – and to the continued interest of Cornelia Adair, his widow. Let's begin the story with Cornelia, born in 1837 to a wealthy family in western New York State. In 1857 she married a man from Boston named Montgomery Harrison Ritchie,

THE

11 years her senior. After only seven years of marriage and two sons, she lost her husband because of an illness he suffered during the Civil War. Ritchie had fought for a time under Gen. Ambrose E. Burnside, in the Union army. Cornelia took her two sons to Europe to be educated. In 1867 she met John Adair, a wealthy Irishman 14 years her senior, and married him in New York in 1869. On his property in Ireland in County Dugal, Cornelia entertained lavishly in its castle. She no doubt learned that, like so many landlords, Adair in 1861 had evicted his tenants to allow more grazing land. (Many such displaced Irish fled to the U.S.) Although both had traveled extensively in Europe, neither had visited the American West. Thus in 1874 the Adairs took a tour of the U.S. which began in the Great Lakes. They then went by train to Omaha, Nebraska and decided to see the plains or the first time. With their prominence, they arranged to meet Gen. Phillip Sheri-

dan in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and he provided a military escort for them. They enjoyed seeing the native dress of the Sioux. Adair enjoyed a hunting trip. This excursion made them PAGES FROM both decide to WESTERN buy land. Adair looked for men HISTORY to go into the J’Nell L. Pate cattle business with him, and someone introduced him to Charles Goodnight. Adair told Goodnight to buy the land, and he would furnish the money. The deal that Adair and Goodnight worked out was that Adair would receive two-thirds of the land and profits. Goodnight would receive onethird, plus $2,500 per year salary. Adair lent Goodnight the money (at Publisher Kim Ware

10 percent interest) to buy his onethird investment. They began with only 2,500 acres and 1,500 cattle. Goodnight kept purchasing land with Adair's money. After only three trips from Europe to the ranch, Adair died in 1885. Goodnight wanted out of the agreement, and Cornelia agreed. She hired a manager. From the beginning she was an astute owner and much more engaged in running the ranch than Adair had been. Although she lived in Europe, she wrote many letters to her manager. She wanted to develop the ranch, not just take money out of it, and she expected timely reports about the ranch business. During World War I, she was stuck in Europe and couldn't visit. She died in 1921, and eight years later her heirs sold the Irish estate which presently is the largest park in Ireland. She and Adair had no children. Because her descendants still own the ranch today, some genealogy is necessary. Cornelia's two sons from her first marriage were Arthur Ritchie and James Wadsworth (Jack) Ritchie.

I don't know what happened to Arthur, but Jack had two sons, Montgomery (Montie) and Richard (Dick) Ritchie. Dick died at age 28 from carbon monoxide poisoning. Thus, Montie, born in 1910, inherited the ranch. He died in 1999 at age 89. Montie's daughter Cornelia (Ninia) married a Texas State Senator, Miles Teel Bivins of Amarillo, a rancher. Ninia Bivins' son, making a fifth generation of JA Ranch ownership, Andrew Montgomery Bivins, born 1969, became part of the JA management. While in Amarillo at the West Texas Historical Association convention in early April, I heard academic presentations about Cornelia and also learned from an Amarillo friend an explanation of the family relationships. He told me that Ninia’s son Andrew is married to the daughter of baseball great Nolan Ryan. Cornelia’s legacy, more so than John Adair's, continues on! By June 4, Abbott had signed 340 bills into law and vetoed two: HB 225, relating to the prescription and dispensation of “opioid antagonist” drugs; and SB 359, relating to the emergency detention of a person with mental illness. Now that I spend time coaching and consulting pastors and church leaders, I am trying to pass on some of those. I think they are also applicable to a broader vocational spectrum. Everyone I know wants to experience vocational “success.” We want to achieve and be noticed. We want to be IN. I am at the point in life where the desire for success has been

wish I had paid better attention growing up. There are a lot of things I had to learn by trial and error as a grownup that happened right in front of me as a youth, but I wasn’t interested. I expressed that thought to my step-father in a recent conversation. One of those handy guys that can figure out how to fix just about anything, he could have taught me a lot in those early years. But I was too busy and didn’t see the relevance of all that stuff, so it was faster and more efficient to do it himself. Unfortunately, the pattern continued and my grown-up son is having to learn things that I didn’t take the time to teach him either. I’m not experiencing any regrets or angst over this; just acknowledging lessons I wish I had learned earlier. I think I learned – and passed on – the things that matter most. But,

replaced by the desire for significance. As I’ve been thinking about that, I’ve thought of a sequence of significance that perhaps seems a little counterintuitive, but stay with me to the end. To be a part of the significance IN crowd: 1. Make yourself IN-dispensible. Become the go-to person, the one who can be counted on. Exceed expectations. Under-promise and overdeliver. Demonstrate integrity and build trust. Someone will be watching you and learning. 2. Make yourself IN-cognito. Getting noticed feels really good. It can be intoxicating, but those who remain IN-dispensible risk fatigue and burnout. They can become control freaks who never elevate those around them. The idea of making yourself IN-cognito is that you are elevating and empowering those around you to the point that you are giving leadership,

stepping in when necessary, but sharing both responsibility and recognition. It may be quicker and more efficient to do it yourself, but it is more effective to empower others. 3. Make yourself IN-visible. You know your effectiveness as a leader when success may be accomplished without your presence, when recognition goes to your team, when those you have taught advance beyond your abilities. 2 Timothy 2:2 says, “And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.” Our lives matter so much to God that He wants us involved IN His eternal purposes. Softball ladies fill up softball All-District list Three earn superlatives by mark k. campbell A whopping 11 Lady Hornets were named to the 5-5A AllDistrict softball list. A trio of Azle athletes earned superlatives – special recognition for exceptional play. AHS claimed the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year and the Pitcher of the Year. Bailee Carter was picked by district coaches as the best hitter – and her numbers were staggering. For the season, the junior shortstop batted a stunning .587 with an on-base percentage of a remarkable .660. Her 71 hits were more than any other Lady Hornet. She led the team in runs with 64, triples with 5, walks with 25, and steals with 7. Sarah Brown was the pick for the 5-5A Defensive Player of the Year. At third base, she gobbled up a slew of balls and began a crucial 5-2-6 double play that kept Azle alive in the first regional final playoff game against eventual state champion Aledo. Brown, a senior, was big at the plate, too. Her 14 doubles tied her with Samantha Bradley; Brown also drove home the second highest number of teammates, 42, while batting .444. She was near impossible to strike out; Brown fanned just 4 times in 139 plate appearances. The third Lady Hornet special honor went to junior Bradley as the Pitcher of the Year.

Bradley was also a monster at the plate, shattering the AHS record for home runs with 13. She led Azle in with 60 RBI and slugging percentage at .663. Hitting .443, her on base percentage was .570. Other First Team picks included seniors Makenzi Harris (14-4 as a pitcher), Rebekah Teel (.379), Valarie Matlock (22 runs scored), and Bethanie Phillips (.370 hitting, .507 on base). Six of the 11 honorees are underclassmen and will return next season.

Varsity football ‘15 schedule set If you want to see the 2015 varsity football Hornets early in the season, you’ll need to hit the road. Azle’s first three contests – including a scrimmage – are all away from Hornet Field. AHS opens at Burleson for that scrimmage. The regular season opener sends the Hornets to Granbury Aug. 28. Game two of the non-district slate is a rare Saturday game against Waxahachie as Azle once again competes in the Dale Hansen Classic on Sept. 5. AHS finally plays at home on Head coach Devon Dorris Sept. 11 against Cleburne on Youth Football Night. surveys spring practice.

After an open date, the annual Take the Lake clash against Boswell takes on more meaning since it’s the 5-5A opener. That game is Junior High Night. A trip over to Saginaw is next on Oct. 2. Then it’s back to Hornet Field for Homecoming against Wichita Falls High Oct. 9. A hop over to Saginaw again follows Oct. 16 against Chisholm Trail. On Oct. 23, Denton comes to town and that’s followed by a drive to White Settlement to face Brewer on Oct. 30. The regular season ends with Senior Night against WF Rider Nov. 6.
