What a weekend! Well, what a Thursday-Saturday! On Thursday, Feb. 19, the Lady Hornet softball team began a tournament in Brock where Azle would go 6-0 and win by a combined score of 85-1. That effort shot AHS up to No. 2 in the state in 5A. On Friday, the Lady Hornet basketball team defeated Burleson in the Area round – the first time a girls hoops team had won two playoff games in decades. Then, on Saturday, Feb. 21 came an Azle first: Two wrestlers won gold at the state tourney in Garland. First, sophomore Lauren Dale went unbeaten in the 138-pound class. Then, in the final match of the state event, Justin Scarbro (left) defeated a much bigger rival as coaches and fans celebrated behind him. It was a trio of days the likes of which had never been seen around here. SEE STORIES ON PAGE 8A! Photo by Mark K. Campbell

B.J. Clark dies Former councilman, businessman, philanthropist, community supporter leaves large legacy by carla noah stutsman Bobby Joe Clark – known fondly to most people around Azle as simply “B. J.” – died Tuesday morning, Feb. 24, at Azle Manor Nursing Home and Rehabilitation in Azle. He was 86 years old. Arrangements were pending with White’s Funeral Home in Azle at press time. Clark and his wife Betty had resided at Azle Manor for several years prior to her death Nov. 30, 2014. The Clarks were married 69 years. B. J. Clark was a longtime member of Azle’s Sertoma and Optimist Clubs. He served on the city’s Parks Board from 1979 to 1992, and as a city

Top 24: by Carla noah Stutsman Trevor Douglas – who made it to the Top 24 on Fox’s American Idol last week – has been flying under Azle’s radar, it seems. The 17-year-old, who attended Eagle Heights Elementary through his fourth grade year and lives just outside the Azle city limits, says he claims to be from the DFW area – sometimes shortened to just Fort Worth – for a good reason. “Our mailing address is in Fort Worth, we live just outside Azle not far from Eagle Heights, but I attend school in Dallas,” Douglas says. “I’m really from the whole area.” But, he says, his love for performing began while he was a student at Eagle Heights. “Mrs. Matteson, my teacher there, had karaoke Fridays, and it was so much fun. I think that’s when I first realized I liked music and performing,” Douglas says. “Then, at the end of the year, the school had a talent show – incredibly, it was called Eagle Heights Idol – and me and a couple of friends did the Blues Brothers’ “Soul Man” – and we won second place.” Douglas says he instantly knew that “embarrassing myself in front of people onstage” was really fun and he wanted to do more of it.

councilman from 1992 to 1999. Clark donated the land on which Azle’s Community Caring Center sits. He owned and operated Clark’s Gun and Ammo and later Clark Precision Machine and Tool. In February 2012, he was voted Azle’s Favorite Hometown Hero in the People’s Choice Awards given by the Azle Area Chamber of Commerce. Clark’s contributions to the Azle community are countless and will be recounted in more detail in next week’s News. Arrangements will be posted on the News’ website, Facebook, and Twitter sites when information becomes B. J. and Betty Clark are pictured above in February 2012 after B. Azle youth advances on American Idol So, he auditioned and earned a spot at the Fort Worth Academy of Fine Arts, a public charter school, where he attended school for two years. Since then, Douglas has attended Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas. Yes, Dallas. Douglas and his mom make the commute five days a week – well, when they’re not in Hollywood. It works for them, Douglas says, especially since his mom got a job at the Perot Museum just a block or two from his high school. “Plus, employees get a free membership to the museum, and it’s really cool,” he added. Booker T. Washington is a fun school with lots of fun opportunities like open mics during lunch and big opportunities to showcase his music – even though he’s actually in the theater program, Doulas said. “Doing theater really teaches you how to be creative, and it’s also taught me how to really feel a song. I think it makes me a better performer,” he said. If you’ve been watching Season XIV of American Idol, you’ll recognize Douglas as the “geeky” con-

Hanger, 9 Mile TxDOT projects accelerated by Carla noah stutsman At long last, there is good news about three construction projects that will virtually complete the 10-mile stretch of highway between Azle and Lake Worth known as State Highway 199 or the Jacksboro Highway. According to State Representative Charlie Geren, the three projects are now included in the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) proposed projects for years 2, 3 and 4 of Proposition I. The Texas Transportation Funding Amendment, Proposition 1 was on the Nov. 4, 2014 general election ballot in the state of Texas as a legislativelyreferred constitutional amendment, where it was approved by voters. The measure diverted half of the general revenue derived from oil and gas taxes from the Economic Stabilization Fund (ESF) – also known as the Rainy Day Fund – to the State Highway Fund for the purpose of providing transportation funding for repairs and maintenance of public roads.

It was anticipated that this would result in approximately $1.2 billion per year going toward transportation funding instead of the Rainy Day Fund. The measure took effect immediately and has been applied to transfers the comptroller made after Sept. 1, 2014. The three SH 199 projects include constructing an overpass at Nine Mile Bridge Road; building an overpass at Hanger Cutoff Road/Tenderfoot Trail; and reconstructing the main lanes of traffic between those two intersections. The three projects are anticipated to cost $44 million, Geren said. “We’re in the first year of Proposition 1, and these projects are proposed to begin in years 2, 3 and 4,” Geren explained. “I’ll do all I can to try to get them moved up in the process, but the important thing is that we’re in the system now. Before, we were just on the sidelines.” Earlier estimates had put the projects years – maybe even decades – into the future.

testant who told judges Harry Connick, Jr., Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez in his initial audition that if he didn’t win, he might like to pursue a career in science – like Bill Nye, the Science Guy. “I’ve always loved science and enjoyed nature,” Douglas said. “I never liked math, but of course I had to do it.” Since attending Booker T. Washington, he credits the enthusiasm and excitement of another teacher, Mrs. Jay, with changing that. “I’ve even started liking math!” Douglas never had any intention of auditioning for American Idol until a representative from the show came to one of his classes at school. “I really didn’t want to sing for her – I guess I was a little ignorant of the process – but they said I should, and I did,” Douglas laughs. “She said I was really, really good, and that I should go to Nashville and audition.” Next thing he knew, he was in Nashville. Then, suddenly, he was performing at The Orpheum The-

atre in Hollywood, and then on the House of Blues stage as part of Idol’s top 48. Because he passed muster at the House of Blues, Douglas was at CBS Studios rehearsing on Tuesday as part of Idol’s Top 24. His performance with the other “Top 12 Boys” at the Fillmore in Detroit will air at 7 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, Feb. 25. The Top 12 Girls’ Detroit performances are set for Thursday, Feb. 26. Eliminations will be revealed in next week’s episodes, Wednesday and Thursday, March 4 and 5. Douglas says making it this far on American Idol has been a really good experience, and he’s up to 20,000 followers on Twitter and more than 30,000 on Instagram. His mom – a necessity because he’s a minor – is also great fun and very supportive of him, Douglas says. As for the other contestants, Douglas says each of them is so good, so amazing, that he wouldn’t be ashamed to lose to any single one of them. “They each have such awesome talent, I don’t even know

how to calculate it,” he says. “I’ve made good friends here – like Daniel and Savion and all the guys in my “Ladies, Keep Your Clothes On” (“LKYCO”) group,” Douglas said. “I could see myself writing a song with any one of them, and then going out to dinner, and then bowling...” Voting will play a critical part in Douglas’ future on the show, via the downloadable American Idol app. Watch the show to find out more ways to vote – including via text and/or Facebook. Douglas, in closing, said someone at Idol told him “it doesn’t matter how people hear the music as long as it’s good.” He thinks that’s true. His mom says if they just get her son in front of people, he’ll do fine. Douglas also remarked about a great place in Azle where he says he’d sure like to perform sometime. “It’s this great park right off Main Street, where they put on a big fireworks show and it has a really cool amphitheater,” he said. We’ve already made a couple of phone calls to see if that can happen.

Thundersleet! by carla noah stutsman More than 800 school closing notices clogged Twitter accounts and TV news crawlers from Sunday night through Tuesday morning after an inch of sleet fell on North Texas. In fact, nary a school district held classes in the tri-county area Monday or Tuesday, including Azle ISD. Main Street was a barren sheet of ice save a half-dozen pickups driven by adventurous adolescent males in search of the perfect place to show off their best donut maneuvers. Police ran them off from places like Walmart, the parking lot fondly known as the “Diamond parking lot” (historically the best place to do donuts in icy conditions), the Azle High School parking lot, and the parking lot at 404 Main Place. Sledders of all ages were

Not much work was accomplished on Monday, with most people doing the right thing by staying off roadways, opting instead for hot cocoa by a raging fire. By Tuesday, the temperature soared to almost 40 degrees, the sun came out, and most of the frozen precip melted off roadways – just in time for a snowfall event predicted to bring anywhere from one to five inches of the white stuff to the area in the wee hours of Wednesday, Feb. 25. By 6 p.m. Tuesday, school districts and business were announcing late starts and even some closings for Wednesday. New Lakeside water tower erected by carla noah stutsman High winds prevented the town of Lakeside’s new water tower from going up Friday, Feb. 20 as planned, but the feat was completed the following day. Town administrator Randy Whiteman said the new overhead water storage facility is part of a larger package that includes some new water lines and additional improvements to the town’s infrastructure for the purpose of providing more flow and capacity to its water customers. “We hope to have the entire project finished sometime in June,” Whiteman said. “These improvements should handle our capacity needs for a long while, and prevent us from running out of water.” Whiteman warned that the town’s water system still has aging water pipes in many areas, and occasional water line breaks will inevitably occur causing temporary outages while repairs are made. While the new water tower is up, it is not yet attached to the water system, Whiteman added. The tower’s storage tank

first in calculator applications, second in mathematics, and third in the science contest. Senior Keni Martin took third in both calculator and mathematics, and fourth in the science contest. Junior Carl Bertsch brought home first place medals in mathematics and in science and a second place medal in computer science. Sophomore Shawn Kim placed second in three competitions: calculator, mathematics, and science. Freshman Jennifer Wang

placed first in number sense, second in mathematics, and third in science. Freshman Ainsley McDonald finished first in science, second in calculator, and fourth in mathematics. Freshman Skyler Ingram took second place in both number sense and science and third place in mathematics. In addition to the individual awards, the AHS team finished first in number sense, calculator, mathematics, and science team events, which led to their win of the coveted sweepstakes trophy.

Windy conditions prevented Lakeside’s new water storage tank from being raised Friday, Feb. 20 as planned. It went up Saturday, instead. February and Valentine’s Day go hand-inhand. As we spend time this month thinking of ways to let the people we love know how special they are, remember that one of the best gifts you can give your loved ones is for you to stay strong and healthy. According to the Centers for Disease Control, about 600,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year – 1 in every 4 deaths. A recent article in The Huffington Post* cited Colorado as being the eighth (8th) healthiest state in the nation, in part due to having America’s lowest obesity rate – 20.5 percent of the population. Deaths from heartrelated disease in Colorado have decreased by 27 percent in the last 10 years. While that’s great news, many of us can continue to improve our heart health. Not sure where to start? Check out the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Simple Seven list: Get Active – Getting at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity each day (such as brisk walking), five times per week, can lower your chances of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. Think about ways to increase physical activity throughout your day by taking such easy measures as parking farther away when grocery shopping or taking that extra lap around the mall. Control Cholesterol – According to the AHA, your liver and your body’s cells make about 75 percent of the cholesterol in your blood. The other 25 percent comes from your food. Eat healthy foods that are low in cholesterol, trans fats and saturated fats. A high-fiber diet can also help. Schedule a cholesterol screening and stay current on your health check-ups. Eat Better – Reduce your junk food purchases. Make sure you have healthy, nutritious food on hand, particularly fruits and vegetables. Try serving fish a couple of times a week and increase your fiber intake. Try tracking what you eat. You might be surprised at some of the unhealthy choices that sneak into your daily diet. Manage Blood Pressure – Per the

AHA, high blood pressure can be managed. While some people require medication to control blood pressure, in other cases, blood pressure can be improved by reducing sodium intake and consuming a heart-healthy diet, increasing physical activity and maintaining a healthy weight, managing stress, going easy on alcohol and avoiding tobacco smoke. Lose Weight – Too much fat, especially at the midsection, can increase your risk for issues such as high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol and diabetes. Per the American Health Association, obesity is now recognized as a major, independent risk factor for heart disease. Watching your diet and increasing activity go a long way toward helping to reach a healthy weight goal. Reduce Blood Sugar – Many of the Simple Step recommendations work together to help improve your overall health. Physical activity and eating good food can help in this area. Pay particular attention to reducing your consumption of simple sugars that are found in soda, candy, and sugary desserts. Stop Smoking – As noted on the AHA website, cigarette smokers have a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease. If you smoke, quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health. If you’ve tried before and failed, don’t be discouraged. Try again. The potential to improve your health and remove a number of health-related risks is worth the effort. For more information about how the Simple Steps can help you, visit the American Heart Association’s Simple Seven list on their website at : http://mylifecheck.heart.org/ Multitab.aspx?NavID=13&CultureCode=enUS U.S. Health Advisors’ Betty Horton accepts appointments from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. MondayFriday and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Ground control to Major Tom: Off to Mars?!

I

t was good news, bad news for 100 people last week. Good: They were finalists to become members of the first manned mission to Mars. Bad: They were finalists to become members of the first manned mission to Mars. The idea of rocketing to the Red Planet is very exciting to many, especially those of us with memories of the original moon landing in July 1969. (I recall my dad fetching me – I was probably reading some sci-fi book – to come watch it with him on TV.) Space exploration is still a wonder to some of us. Yes, people are starving and that money should be put toward education or job expansion or whatever the hot topic of the week is on talk radio. Once, we humans dreamed – really, really big. We had Apollo missions and Captain Kirk and the Star

Child and Luke Skywalker to keep us enthralled about whatever was…out there. That wonder seems to have faded. At least until this Mars mission came along. When announced, lots of people applied – good news for we space dreamers. The bad news was pretty bad, however: You could die on the planet in 68 days. Wait, what?! That doesn’t sound so terrific. While the frequent flier miles would be incredible – 34 million! – cashing them in won’t be possible, because it’s a one-way trip; you’ll die on the Red Planet. Now I’ve seen Total Recall, and while, admittedly, a triple-breasted female alien is enticing, things go downhill fast as your end looms. But many are willing to forego existence on earth. Over 202,000 people sent in applications to the private, non-

Where is God?

profit organization Mars One, willing to accept their certain demise to further mankind’s reach. From that pool, 50 men and 50 women were picked. Here’s the ON YOUR projected plan: MARK 2018 – send to test Mark K. Campbell athelander technology 2020 – send a roving “intelligent” lander to scope out the best landing site 2022 – send six cargo missions to bring all the living stuff humans need 2024 – send the crew and the rest of their living quarters Next, the astronauts in their special

suits will be picked up one at a time by the intelligent rover, deposited in the already constructed habitats, then covered with red dirt. (There’s a country song dying to get written here…) Some of the crew could live beyond 68 days – but that’s the deadline some experts say the explorers will start dropping off because of too much oxygen. Yes, too much. Right now, the technology does not exist to rid all the air from the confines from all the plants being considered for food. So the image of lots of folks huddling around a head of lettuce desperate to get a snoot full of air won’t be true – it’ll be the opposite. Another problem is getting replacement parts up to the planet’s surface once the construction is done. The last thing you want to hear is “sorry, that’s on back order” when you’re on Mars. Still, kudos to these bold and adventurous souls!

There’s actually another mission planned, one that will send a married couple to circle the planet then slingshot them back to earth. A millionaire wants to send the duo on Jan. 5, 2018 – the closest Mars will be to our planet; it’s another 15 years before it gets that close again. So a married couple will enter a tiny capsule and be in close quarters for 501 days. I don’t think you have to be a rocket scientist to project that that’s courting trouble. I love the Bride, but that’s a long time to be in such close quarters. I can hear her say, “Hey, let me take a photo. Skooch over by that air lock. A little more…a little more….SWOOSH!” The last thing I’d hear is her singing, “Daisy, daisy…” That’d be a HAL-uva situation. Mark K. Campbell is the News editor and figures his asthma would eliminate him from becoming an astronaut – and his fear of heights.

Words won’t stop ISIS terrorism Dear Editor: Well, looks like the United States of America has sunk further into the hole of folly and wimpiness of fighting the war on terrorism under this present Commander-in-Chief Barack Obama. This new breed of the enemy, a Muslim (ISIS) army, is trying to systematically overtake the world with their so called “caliphate” Islamic religion – my way or the highway – in executing multitudes of innocent souls in the most grotesque manner: immolation by fire and beheadings. The countries of Jordan, Egypt, and Great Britain get it and counter by bombing these sub-human monsters back to the Stone Age. Whereas, our brave president wants to kill this incubus from hell with kind words and a job, as he – and his state department spokesperson Ms. Marie Harf – spoke in the news last week, giving a nuance of how America should fight this new global threat. Mr. Obama and Ms. Harf, being the true liberals they are, went to the Democratic playbook 101 – the Straw Man argument – by entreating the American

public that these poor downtrodden lost souls of ISIS may have been brought up with no education, economic woes, abusive families, and unemployment with legitimate grievances. If that asinine narrative wasn't bad enough, Ms. Harf further insulted the American populace noting that maybe the American people didn't understand the word “nuance.” I think I now get it with my lim-

ited amount of education. The fellow named “Jihad John,” who is seen sawing off peoples heads with a knife in ISIS videos, may be your Walmart greeter if Mr. Obama and Ms. Harf have their way. It's not all bad America: You are still getting your “free stuff,” aren't you?

Place names always have a story to tell: Skillman’s Grove

P

lace names that travelers often take for granted have a story to tell, if we just knew it. Remember the Bloys Camp Meeting column that ran recently? It meets in a place called Skillman's Grove. As luck would have it, I was reading a book last week about the Butterfield stage (a column will appear soon), and I saw the name “Skillman's Grove.” I read the comment: “The giant oaks stretch almost a mile toward the mountains.” I learned that the grove of giant oaks was named for Capt. Henry Skillman. Skillman was born in New Jersey in 1813 or early 1814 and grew up in Kentucky. As a young man he came to the Southwest and worked as a trader and courier on the Santa Fe Trail as early as 1842. He also extended his trading travels into Chihuahua, Mexico. When the Mexican War began in 1846, he volunteered as a scout. Imagine a man over six feet tall with long, sandy-yellow hair and a beard, as written descriptions picture him.

THE

Skillman served under Alexander Doniphan's army from Missouri, and on Christmas Day, 1846 they captured El Paso (on the Mexican side at the time and later named Juarez). He was among the first Americans to arrive in El Paso. Skillman also served as a wagon master, apparently learning skills that he would put to good use later. Then in 1847 in Sacramento, California Skillman distinguished himself as the captain of Company B in a Traders Battalion. Later that same year he served as an interpreter and guide for American troops in Mexico. When Skillman returned to Santa Fe, Colonel Sterling Price chose him to command a party of scouts to travel from El Paso toward Chihuahua in advance of the American troops. Following the Mexican War Skillman, from 1849-50, became one of the first riders to carry mail on horseback between San Antonio and El Paso. In 1851 the U.S. Postmaster General gave him the first contract to deliver mail between Santa Fe and San Antonio. By stagecoach he ran the

route every other month until March 1852 when he began a monthly trip. His first run consisted of six mules and a Concord stagecoach with an escort of 18 armed men to protect the PAGES FROM mail. Eventuthe route WESTERN ally became one of HISTORY freight wagons pulled by J’Nell L. Pate mules. A g a i n , mounted horsemen accompanied the wagons, sometimes leading pack mules. Soon the Postmaster insisted that passengers be allowed to travel along. Skillman had the contract, but he didn't have the money to build stage stations and equip them to accommodate passengers. the contract to someone else. By 1857 Skillman was supervisor of the first mail coach from San Antonio to San Diego, California. He actually is primarily remembered as the driver of the first Overland Mail stage (commonly called the Butterfield stage because John Butterfield had the contract) that arrived in El Paso Thursday, September 30, 1858. This was the first westward trip of the famous Butterfield route, and Skillman started his drive at Horsehead Crossing on the Pecos River in Texas on a Sunday morning and arrived in El Paso 306 miles away before daybreak on Thursday. The almost superhuman feat, related numerous times in historical accounts, is that he spent 96 hours driving that route with no relief! He was 45 years old, carried several revolvers and Bowie knives, and dressed in buckskins. In 1859 he became the Overland Mail (Butterfield) agent in El Paso. When the Civil War began, he joined the Confederacy and became a courier for a group that fled the U.S.

and formed a colony on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande across from El Paso. He knew the country and could come and go easily along the Rio Grande between Texas and Mexico. A squad of Union troops was ordered to capture Skillman alive. However, at Spencer's Ranch in Presidio County Skillman fought back and was shot and killed by Union troops on April 3, 1864. A century later in 1964 citizens of Presidio erected a historical marker honoring him. Through the years the beautiful stand of oak trees called Skillman's Grove was a camping place for stages, emigrant trains, soldiers, and became one of the stage stations. Skillman had first used it as a campsite in 1850. It is no wonder, then, that when the ranchers of the area and the circuit riding Presbyterian preacher William D. Bloys decided to hold outdoor, religious camp meetings, that Skillman's Grove would be the perfect place. n Feb. 17, Gov. Greg Abbott delivered his first State of the State address during a joint session of the Texas House and Senate and released his recommendations for the two-year 2016-2017 state budget. In his 43-page Governor’s Budget document, Abbott said he aims to: “Constrain the size and growth of government. Reduce agency spending. Suspend, reduce, and eliminate unnecessary taxes and fees. Ensure government supports job creation and is accountable and transparent.” Abbott is recommending general revenue spending of $99.4 billion for 2016-2017, slightly less than a 5 percent increase in general revenue spending compared with the current budget. “By keeping spending levels lower than the growth in population plus inflation, we can ensure that the size of government does not grow. This allows Texas to significantly reduce tax burdens,” Abbott asserted, and promoted the building of the budget on the following “core principles”: • Passing a constitutional amendment to limit the growth in state spending to the historic growth in the state’s population plus inflation. • Limiting the size of government by reducing most state agency general revenue expenditures by 3 percent. • Securing additional funding for transportation infra-

Same-sex marriage is conducted Austin State District Judge David Wahlberg, citing “unconstitutional prohibitions against same-sex marriage” in Texas, gave Travis County the green light to proceed with official paperwork culminating in a marriage ceremony uniting two women on Feb. 19. Attorney General Paxton quickly obtained a stay from the Texas Supreme Court that prevents same-sex marriages. Paxton also seeks to invalidate the one marriage that was conducted. Gov. Abbott said, “Article 1, Section 32 of the Texas Constitution defines marriage as consisting ‘only of the union of one man and one woman’ and was approved by more than threequarters of Texas voters. I am committed to ensuring that the Texas Constitution is upheld and that the rule of law is maintained in the State of Texas.” The constitutionality of same-sex marriage is a matter pending before the U.S. Supreme Court. A ruling is expected by June 30. At a time when great numbers of people are unchurched – groups being termed None (no church affiliation) and Done (former congregants who are disgusted with church doctrine or behavior) – we at Eagle Mountain United Methodist Church are offering “spirituality” rather than “religion.” Yes, we follow “methods” (as Methodists do) but more importantly, we follow Jesus. As Christians we are ecumenical, beloving (active) rather than believing (passive). As Texans, we belong to the Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty (TCADP). We are a Reconciling Ministries Network congregation, welcoming the LGBTQ community, and we take part in other social actions seeking justice: economic, when everyone has enough; social, when everyone is treated equally and with dignity; and restorative, when law-breakers and victims alike receive loving support. Believing in a loving God who has no gender, no vending machine, and no vengeance. We strive to transform the Church as even Pope Francis challenges all of us to remove fear, hatred, bullying, and aggression, replacing them with loving out loud, treating others as we want to be treated, and sharing ideas and questions in open discussion. Then we take action. We are the folks out on Reed Road who have the food pantry, “Inasmuch…” We have DVD studies researching the historical Jesus; we question when and how the books of the Bible were canonized; we wonder why women have been excluded from the foundations of the Church; and we listen to panel discussions of faith and reason: We don’t want your soul to accept what your mind rejects. (Dr. D.L. Dykes, a former Methodist minister in Shreveport) Like the Nones and the Dones, we’re seeking change, and we welcome our community to join us. Jan Gay Azle

Dale, Scarbro crowned state wrestling champs Davis 3rd, Ariosa 5th at state tournament By Mark K. Campbell The Azle wrestling team turned in another first at the state meet in Garland Feb. 2021. AHS has seen individual champions and even a team title. But never had a male and female Azle athlete earned a state crown in the same year. That’s what happened at the Culwell Center when Lady Hornet Lauren Dale and Hornet Justin Scarbro both won gold. Two other Lady Hornets also claimed medals; Hali Davis won a bronze and Ruby Ariosa finished fifth. Five other athletes reached the second day of the tournament, making the 2015 trip to state one to remember for AHS. Dale and Scarbro both had unique journeys to the top station of the awards stand.

That set Dale against Marissa Dixon from Huntsville in the semifinals. The Lady Hornet out-scored her senior opponent and won 4-0. The next day, Saturday, Feb. 21, Dale was pitted against a familiar foe, Chloe Wujek from Prosper. At the regional gathering the weekend before, Dale had bested the junior to win Region 2. This time, the Lady Hornet fell behind quickly, 2-0. But Dale rebounded and steadily caught up then pulled away. When the third period buzzer sounded, Dale had become the third Lady Hornet state champion, 10-2. She said, “My goal was to go out and get the first takedown and work top. But that didn’t happen. I still wrestled how I wanted to though.” Dale joins Hannah McFarland (2012) and Jesse Grubbs Lauren Dale’s journey Competing at 138 pounds, (2013-14) as Lady Hornet gold Dale, a sophomore, was mak- medal winners. ing her second trip to state. Lady Hornets drill Burleson in Area round By Mark K. Campbell For the first time in decades, an Azle girls basketball team has won two postseason games. The Lady Hornets (25-5) used a big third period – 20 points – to put some distance between them and Burleson. When the Lady Elks drew even, Azle bolted away again and won, 54-46. The victory sent AHS to the regional game against Fort Worth Trimble Tech; however, that contest – set for Haltom High School – had been delayed twice by weather by press time. Azle led Burleson 18-15 at halftime at Fort Worth’s Wilkerson-Greines gym. A nice crowd rooted the Lady Hornets on to an impressive third quarter. At one point – thanks to the hot hand of Kaycie Dunkerley who scored 8 quick points, 6 from a pair of bombs – AHS led 35-26. But Burleson clawed back then, making a pair of 3-pointers in the final seconds, and drew to within 38-34. Azle pummels all comers, rises to No. 2 in the state By Mark K. Campbell Once again the Lady Hornet softball team won the Brock tournament. And it was no contest. Azle (6-0) demolished all six teams it faced – by a combined score of a whopping 85-1. Yes, 85-1. The season began with AHS piling up 16 runs in the first inning against Paradise; Azle won, 25-0. Samantha Bradley got the win while she and Raelyn Temple belted home runs. Later that Thursday, Feb. 19, the Lady Hornets tallied 11 runs in the second inning of a 19-0 blow out of Pampa. Azle’s closest game of the tourney was against Boyd Friday morning. The Lady Hornets topped the Lady Jackets 4-0, collecting 11 hits. Tittle had 3 of them. Rebekah Teel and Logan Graham doubled. Makenzi Harris picked up

her second victory, tossing a no-hitter. In the afternoon of Feb. 20, AHS clubbed Celina 16-1. Harris again was the winning pitcher; the lone opponent run was unearned. The next morning, Bradley blanked Pilot Point 8-0. Azle had just 4 hits, 2 by Bradley, taking advantage of errors to plate half of its runs. Bradley tallied 4 RBI. In the tourney finale, Azle beat Bowie 13-0 with Harris permitting just one hit. Bailee Carter scored 3 times as did Bradley. Pundits took notice of Azle’s impressive weekend. Track season dodges weather Most Azle High School teams suffered with some testy weather. But not the track teams. A truncated meet at Byron Nelson was conducted in nice weather. No team points were kept among the 11 squads, girls Coach Melody Dennis said. “We competed better than I anticipated and most of our relays scored points,” she said. A Lady Hornet mile relay team of Karly Thomas, Kaylie Peters, Ayden Thomason, and Brooke Smith finished second in 4 minutes, 20.19 seconds. Azle’s “sprint medley” squad – Leslie Rojas, Breonna Cannon, Baylee Denson, and Sarah Perna – took the silver in 4:51.31. A 4x800 squad of Kylie Fonville, Perna, Haddash Marquart, and Crystal McDonnell took fourth in 11:02.31. Coach Dennis said, “Most events had anywhere from 15 to 22 relay teams, so our kids that placed in the relays had to beat a lot of kids.” In the few field events contested, Smith finished second in the pole vault, clearing 10 feet even. Two Lady Hornets placed in the discus competition; Katy O’Dell finished second (100 feet, 2 inches) and Parkison was fourth (79-0). Parkison also placed in the shot put, fourth at 31-10.5. In the crowded boys competition, Chase Slack tied for fifth in the shot, throwing 34-8.25. Dennis said, “It was a tough, exciting meet. I am looking forward to a very competitive and successful season with these hard-working athletes.” Next up for Azle – weather permitting – is the Hays Relays at Haltom High School Thursday, Feb. 26. That’s followed by the Pioneer Relays at Boswell March 5. District is April 15.

AHS soccer in 5-5A race Both Azle soccer teams remain in the midst of the 5-5A race. The girls defeated Boswell 3-0 to move to 4-2-2 in district play. In the victory, the Lady Hornets got goals from Lauren Harvick, Joyce Houng, and Kaycee Moore. Meagan McNew had assists on the first two scores. Bad weather iced out a Feb. 24 home match against Saginaw. The boys sit in playoff position in fourth place after a 7-1 thumping of Boswell at Hornet Field. Pepe Ballesteros turned in a hat trick, scoring three goals. Javier Mejia added 2. Also scoring were Ben Davis and Josa Gomez. The Boswell contests marked the beginning of round two of 5-5A play. Every Azle wrestler gets a win at state off the mat where he struck his head on the cement floor in that final period – forcing an injury time out – Scarbro returned and kept Kohnen, who outweighed the Hornet by at least 30 pounds, at bay. Fans and teammates leapt into the air at the final buzzer. Scarbro, a third place regional qualifier, had beaten three regional champs to win the highest prize in the state.

In his way was a third regional champion, Kerrigan Kohnen from Frisco Wakeland who reached Garland with a stunning 63-4 record. Scarbro was 0-3 against the hulking Kohnen. Coach Chris Allen said a strategy was decided on: “He’s a lot bigger than us; we had been working with Justin on how to counter his throw and take our shots. “The game plan was to keep attacking, slip his throw, and push the match to the third period and let our conditioning win it for us.” That’s exactly what hap-

Movie Man

Azle News Wednesday, February 25, 2015

Costner breaks the tape in another sports movie Disney is wise. The studio makes superhero movies. They create kid-friendly pictures, animated and otherwise. They produce an annual nature film every Earth Day. (This year it’s Monkey Kingdom.) And they put out old-timey movies that appeal to adults who long for a feel-good, inspirational story – the kind that land on the AARP Movies for Grown-Up Awards list. That’s McFarland, USA. About the film Cinematic history is filled with inspirational sports movies. One of the great upsets in Oscar history came via one, Chariots of Fire (1981). At the 1982 Academy Awards ceremony, the British movie beat two heavily-favored others – Raiders of the Lost Ark and Hollywood catnip Reds, a mammoth, sprawling tale of Communism directed and starring Warren Beatty. The list of sports inspirational movies is long and every sport is included from football’s Rudy (1993) to basketball’s Hoosiers (1986) to baseball’s The Natural (1984) to the ultimate underdog story, the great boxing movie Rocky (1976). But sometimes inspirational films, some non-sports, are cast in a different light, one where critics bemoan “another white guy coming in to save the day.” One movie that really got beaten up in that regard was The Green Mile (1999, Movie Man No. 317, a 9 – and a rare 9 that was not Best of Year, that went to Toy Story 2 [MM #315, 9]). While moviegoers loved The Green Mile, many critics were more than unkind, labeling it another “Black Jesus” movie – the anti-white man saving the day; this time, a poor black man shows white folks the way to the light. Overall, the collected critical reception was poor; out of

36 Metacritic reviews, the average score was just 61. The Green Mile takes the same whupping from critics that Forrest Gump (1994, MM #33, 9, Best of Year) does – this time it’s a mentally challenged man who helps folks appreciate life. The hate is unfair; both are great movies. Most critics are sticks in the mud (well, not the Movie Man, of course). The plot (spoilers, but duh) Jim White (Kevin Costner) just got fired from another high school coaching job. Soon, his only option is to move from Idaho to dirt-poor McFarland, California, a heavily-Hispanic town that revolves around crop picking in nearby fields. Costner sees that some of his P.E. kids are fast runners. So, while knowing nothing about the sport, he creates a cross country team. Everyone learns at the same time. Off the course, Costner, his wife (Maria Bello), and two daughters try to assimilate into the local culture. Soon, the rag-tag band of kids – the football dropout, the angry young man, the goofy one, the poser, the “fat” one – are lining up for the state championship against teams with far superior training chances and equipment.

Run, hombre! Starring: Kevin Costner, Maria Bello, Valente Rodriguez Directed by: Niki Caro Rated PG: one mild cuss word, culture clash with mucho glaring email: movieman@azlenews.net

Plus, Costner gets offered a job at an upscale high school. Will he take it? Will his daughter forgive him for missing her fifteenth birthday? Will the fat guy factor into the title race? Why, you have seen some inspirational sports movies! What works Costner is solid, as always. Just like with the recent Black or White (MM #1124, 6), he’s still the guy that commands the screen. His intense stares and heartfelt confessions are all believable. He’s a movie star. Bella is also really good. Clearly not a woman who is fighting her aging, her lined face and watery, caring eyes convey a woman who loves her

man, even if he keeps screwing up. The running scenes work better when the training sessions are highlighted – dirt puffing up behind a boy running through a plowed field, reflections off a still body of water. The conclusion, while obvious, still packs some clout. Best scene (spoiler) Costner lies in bed with Bello. He’s pondering whether to take what looks like the perfect job offer at a rival school where

there awaits a better house, a higher salary, and a safer environment. She faces away from him, and we know she clearly does not want to leave. But she tells him that it’s his decision. It’s a scene of a spouse hanging in there, supporting her betrothed. It’s quietly powerful.

off a few pounds. The rating This is classic Disney – one minor cuss word. It’s the mildest of PGs. Summing up Here’s a movie the entire family can enjoy. It’s not only inoffensive but inspirational. It’ll soon be in the rotation of coaches everywhere, along with Remember the Titans (2000, MM #370, 7) and a slew of others that will fire up teenagers around America.

What doesn’t work The kids are never highlighted enough. While the fat dude and the angry guy get some attention, overall, they are merely a pack of indistinct runners. (Which, coaches will say, is just what you want in a cross Next up Will Smith’s Focus. country team.) One boy’s father is especially cruel. However, his abrupt change of heart where he ends up hugging his son at the finish line is completely unbelievable. The movie is very long, over two hours. Exceptional drought persists Spring rains needed to avoid Stage 2 drought restrictions BY MISTY SHAW It’s a sad sight these days from the shore of what remains of Eagle Mountain Lake with the ever-receding water line seemingly miles away. Trees are withering and many creeks have been dry for months as the entire region remains in an exceptional drought. Even with the recent ice and snow, the actual moisture content from that sort of precipitation is very low and makes minimal impact on the drought situation. Stage 1 drought restrictions are currently in place, and Stage 2 may not be far off, according to local water authorities. “We currently are under Stage 1 watering restrictions,” said Steve Harris, manager of Walnut Creek Special Utility District (SUD) in Springtown. “Our water supplier, Tarrant Regional Water District (TRWD), has sent us notice that Stage 2 restrictions will be in place soon.” PLEASE SEE STAGE, PAGE 2A.

There used to be a substantial swimming beach at Shady Grove Park but not right now. Today, this buoy has been high and dry as the long-term drought continues; the area remains under the “Extreme” category. Winter ice and snow has little affect on the drastic conditions. Photo by Misty Shaw

Stage 2 restrictions looming n STAGE, FROM PAGE ONE.

Under Stage 1 restrictions, outdoor watering is limited to twice per week, according to Chad Lorance, TRWD communications manager. “We have been hovering around 60 percent of capacity for the last few months,” Lorance said. “If we drop below 60 percent, it will trigger Stage 2 of the drought plan. That would mean once per week outdoor watering. Even with lake levels currently holding steady at 63 percent, Lorance stressed that conservation is key. “At this point, there is no need to water your lawn and landscapes,” he said. “The grass is dormant and has had plenty of rain this winter to keep it alive. “We have pumped enough water into Eagle Mountain over the last couple of years to completely refill the lake more than once over,” Lorance said. “If we didn’t receive another drop of rain between now and midApril, we could drop below the Stage 2 threshold at that point.” The answer to the region’s water woes, of course, is the return of normal rainfall. The

most recent threemonth outlook from the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center forecasts below-normal temperatures and a slight chance for above-average precipitation in the area this spring. Every rain event helps push back the possibility of Stage 2 restrictions, Lorance said. “The good news is the ground is still saturated, so any additional rain we get this spring should create some run-off and keep demands low,” he said. “Hopefully, we get enough rainfall throughout the spring to get us through the summer without reaching Stage 2.” Local water authorities are doing everything they can to mitigate the impacts of a lasting drought, and encourage residents to do the same. “We have an aggressive drought contingency plan that was designed to get us through these types of situations,” Lorance said. “Obviously, we are in a much better position than

other areas around the state – that is also a testament to the public’s commitment to adhering to the drought plan and being conservation-minded.” Harris said Walnut Creek SUD has also taken steps to conserve levels in dwindling Lake Bridgeport, which provides water to Springtown and surrounding areas. “We have recently added some floating pumps to our intake at Lake Bridgeport to maintain our flow to the treatment plant as lake levels decline,” he said. “We can’t do anything about the lack of rain, but we all can conserve water to get through this time of drought.”

Dining out can still be healthy Men and women with an eye on shedding a few extra pounds might feel as though dining out is a luxury their waistlines simply cannot afford. But many restaurants recognize their customers’ growing desire for healthier fare. People can expect to find a host of nutritional items on the menu at their favorite local restaurant, making dining out both a viable and healthy option for those who want to put money back into their community while enjoying a night out on the town. Of course, diners who want to ensure their next night out is healthy can take a number of steps before hitting the town with friends, family or that special someone. • Peruse the menu ahead of time. Many restaurants now post their menus to their Web

sites, where prospective diners can get a feel for the restaurant while examining the menu for foods they can feel good about eating. Look for low-calorie meals and choose a few candidates that you might want to eat when you arrive at the restaurant. Some restaurants may count the calories for you on the menu or explain where and why they buy their ingredients in an attempt to ensure their customers’ meals will be both delicious and healthy. • Consider ordering off the menu. Ordering off the menu was a practice once reserved for bigwigs or restaurant regulars. But nowadays many restaurants recognize that some customers might be on restricted diets for medical reasons and are willing to work with their customers who still want to enjoy a meal

out without putting their health in jeopardy. Ordering off the menu does not necessarily mean ordering a dish that isn’t on the menu. Ordering off the menu can refer to asking that ingredients like salt not be used to prepare your meal or asking that a dish is baked or grilled instead of fried. Many restaurants are amenable to such requests, but it’s up to the customer to ask. • Ask for smaller portions. Smaller portions can help men and women maintain a healthy weight, and some restaurants even allow customers to buy half-portions for less money. If that option is available, take advantage of it. If not, skip the appetizer and dessert courses, and don’t be afraid to leave some food on your plate at the end of the meal. You can always have your meal wrapped.

• Share your meal. Out on a date with your special someone? Then order one entree and let your server know you plan to share the meal. You might have to pay a little extra to share the meal, but you won’t be eating as much and the added cost of sharing will still be less than purchasing two entrees. • Don’t forget to eat before you dine out. If you miss meals throughout the day before dining out at night, you’re far more likely to overindulge once you get to the restaurant. Be sure to eat a healthy breakfast and lunch and a healthy snack of fruits or vegetables before going out to dinner at night. If so, you won’t be as hungry when you arrive at the restaurant and you won’t overeat to combat that hunger.
