About this module

Welcome to the School of Design Research Methods for Postgraduates module. This module forms the foundation learning for you to be able to develop the advanced level skills that you need to achieve your Masters qualification.

This module is core to all taught postgraduate students in the School of Design and the MSc in Cultural Events Management. It provides the multidisciplinary context and learning spaces to facilitate possibilities for inter and cross disciplinary research projects.

This module is designed to enhance students’ knowledge and understanding of the nature and scope of research.

Students will be introduced to a rich and diverse curriculum, supported by a range of learning activities that will enable them to embed research theory into their design, arts practice or social scientific enquiry.

Students will examine and evaluate current issues in practice-led and practice-based research.

The Module will support students to extend and develop their portfolio of research skills that will be a key asset in their future careers as designers, practitioners, professionals or academic researchers.

The UK QAA Level 7 Descriptors state that: Master's degrees are awarded to students who have demonstrated: 

a systematic understanding of knowledge, and a critical awareness of current problems and/or new insights, much of which is at, or informed by, the forefront of their academic discipline, field of study or area of professional practice



a comprehensive understanding of techniques applicable to their own research or advanced scholarship



originality in the application of knowledge, together with a practical understanding of how established techniques of research and enquiry are used to create and interpret knowledge in the discipline

Learning and Teaching Strategies

The main module content will be delivered through a series of whole-school lectures; workshops and seminars; and group or individual tutorials. You are encouraged to utilise the full range of support that is available on Blackboard under Art, Design and Humanities Research Methods. When you are thinking about research always go to Blackboard first to see if there are materials that will help you develop your research approach(es).

Remember that at Masters level we expect substantial individual research to be undertaken under your own personal initiative. Self Study is key to studying at Masters level. Success in all your modules will be dependent on your motivation to undertake self-study. Merely responding to the more tutor-led components of your programme will not guarantee success at Masters Level.

Individual and group tutorials will be provided by your programme team to support the assessment tasks. All of the assessment tasks in this module are intended to enhance and assess skills development, so that you can expand and consolidate your understanding of research methods and your subject area simultaneously.

Although this module takes place in Term 1, you should get used to accessing materials from Blackboard throughout your academic studies with us. For PGT students the research methods materials will help you in Term 2, and will be especially important in Term 3, when you are focusing on your own research project or Major Project. MA Research, and MPhil/PhD students, you will be constantly making changes and revisions to your developing research project, so make of habit of visiting the concise knowledge base to check your understanding and the resources to see if there are examples in your particular field or subject area.

Learn where VLE materials are in Term 1, and get used to accessing them and referring to them. The materials have been put together to support your understanding of research methods and will help you to develop your Major Project/Dissertation/MPhil /PhD research ideas.

A general research methods reading list is also available on the VLE, but for more subject specific texts, you will need to consult your programme or seminar tutors, as they will be able to advise you.

Assessment Scheme and Schedule

This will be determined by your programme team – please check with your seminar tutor.

Summative assessment process The formal process of assessment is actually quite a lengthy process and submission of your work is the most essential part of it. You will give work in for assessment during the term and at the end of the year. If the work is a summative assessment then, in simple terms, the process works like this:  

You give in work for assessment related to specific projects/titles/tasks.

The work is assessed and given a mark by a tutor.

Other tutors, normally involved in the same subject area, will then either also assess it and give it a mark and/or will moderate a sample of the work submitted (usually not less than 10% of the work).

During this period you should receive some direct feedback about your work from your tutor. This feedback can be verbal or written. (Note there is a 20 working day turnaround time for tutor marking & feedback in accordance with the DMU Assessment & Feedback Policy).

The tutors involved discuss their marks and agree on what the final marks should be.

These marks are given to the External Examiner to review in connection with a sample of the work produced on the module.

The agreed final marks are submitted to the Programme Assessment Board.

The Programme Assessment Board approves (ratifies) the results for all the modules within the programme.

You get your official results from the University after this process is complete.

Blackboard and Turnitin

Turnitin (via Blackboard) is a text-matching tool used for Plagiarism Detection, which you will be introduced to during your academic study. The aim of using this software is to deter plagiarism, rather than to detect it and punish you.

Typically, your tutors will set up specific Turnitin Assignments in the Assessment area of the Blackboard site for your module and will notify you via an announcement when it is live. You will then need to upload an electronic version of your work (e.g. as a Microsoft Word document) by the submission date. Turnitin will then compare your submitted work with that of your fellow students and against billions of items in its database culled from the Internet, journals and other sources.

You will be required to submit written assignments through Turnitin via Blackboard by midday on the deadline date for the specific assessed component(s) indicated in your Module Handbooks. It is important that you consult your Module Handbooks and tutors for each individual module/assessment.

How to submit your assignment through Turnitin  

If your tutors are expecting you to submit an assignment through Turnitin, they will have set up a link in the area of your Blackboard course which contains assignments/assessments.

Log in to your Blackboard module and click on the appropriate link to take you to your assessment area.

Click the View/Complete link next to the assignment name; the submission form will open.

Click on the author drop-down box and find and click on your name. If your name is not automatically displayed, you can type in your first and last name, then type a submission title in the appropriate box.

Click the Browse button to locate the file on your computer that you want to submit. In the new window click on the relevant document and select open.

Click Submit to upload the selected file into Blackboard. You will be asked to confirm that this is the text you want to submit. Select “Yes” to submit this file. After your work has been submitted successfully, you will receive an electronic receipt, which you should retain. You must make sure that you complete these steps.

Your submission task is now complete so you can now use the menu to navigate away from this page.

For some assessments your tutors may allow you access to the Originality Report for your work. There are a number of ways that your tutor may decide to enable you to access the report. If you have been granted access to the Originality Reports, you will see the following screen after clicking on the View/Complete link.

You should also be able to download a digital receipt for your submission from this screen. Note that at busy times you may need to wait up to 24 hours for the Originality report to be generated. Note that other students will not be able to see or view your report.

In some subjects the tutor will add commentary and feedback directly onto the electronic version of your written assignment. They may use a tool called Feedback Studio, which is integrated into Turnitin. If this is the case, you receive this feedback from either the relevant assignments View/Complete link or a MyGrades link within the Blackboard Module (if your tutor has provided access to this). Further guidance on Turnitin can be found in the User Guide tab in Blackboard, at the top of the screen.

What to do in the event the Turnitin is not available If Turnitin is unavailable students should check the module site on Blackboard for any announcements regarding assignment submission. If no announcements are showing students should notify their tutor, if possible using their DMU email account. Students should keep their receipt (and receipt number) for their Turnitin submission or any error messages displayed; these should be included in their email notification to the tutor. Where a student is unable to upload their assignment due to Turnitin failure the student should submit their work via email to the assessing tutor to meet the original submission deadline.

PLEASE NOTE THE ADH POLICY FOR ALL TURNITIN SUBMISSION DEADLINES IS NOW MIDDAY to ensure support is available for any technical issues 

Protocols for submitting work – for both hard copy submission (where appropriate e.g. placement assessment or non-text assessments that cannot be submitted via Turnitin) and electronic submission via Turnitin.

The DMU assessment and feedback policy recommends that module leaders avoid students being required to submit both electronic and hard copy where possible and section 4.1 highlights that the default should be via electronic submission.

Extensions

Where you are unable to meet assessment submission deadlines for coursework or project‐based work, you may request a coursework extension.

Your Module Tutor or Module Leader can grant an extension of up to two weeks (14 consecutive days) maximum, although tutors may grant less time than this or refuse your extension request (depending on the reasons given).

One authorized late submission date only can be given for each project/module submission.

Alternatively, if you feel a coursework extension will not be enough to resolve your problem(s), you may need to apply for deferral.

Extensions will only be approved for situations which can be described as ‘crises’ which could not reasonably be anticipated and which are of sufficient severity and duration to interfere with the production of assessed work. Examples which may result in an extension include personal illness or serious illness of a close relative.

Extensions will not normally be given for anticipated events, such as house moves, holidays, or increases in workload. In particular, problems with information technology (loss of data, printer failure, etc.) will not be accepted as justification for an extension. It is essential you get into good and ‘safe’ habits with regard to computer work by ensuring you make regular back-ups of work and by ensuring that you do not leave printing until the last moment; note that printer queues become very large prior to assessments – inability to print work by published deadlines is not a valid reason for a coursework deadline extension.

If an extension is agreed the work is accepted for assessment without penalty. Such requests must be made prior to the published submission date and an Extension of Coursework Submission form must be completed (available from the Faculty Student Advice Centre). Extensions will not be granted for periods of more than 14 consecutive days under any circumstances.

Work submitted after agreed extended coursework submission deadlines will be subject to the late submission penalties. Please see your programme handbook for further details about late submission.

11.

Deferral

The assessment of work is an important milestone in your academic career.

Assessments have to be scheduled for certain times during the academic year, but the University accepts that it is possible that, on exceptional occasions, your performance may be seriously impaired by severely adverse personal circumstances beyond your control or ability to foresee. If you are experiencing difficulties with your studies you should contact your Personal Tutor, Programme Leader or the Faculty Student Advice Centre.

Where severely adverse personal circumstances, as outlined by the University, suggest that your performance on your programme might, as a result, be substantially disadvantaged, then it may be appropriate for you to apply to have certain assessments deferred. This is a formal process which requires completion of the relevant forms and inclusion of “relevant and credible” professional third party supporting evidence. All evidence must be on official paper and where appropriate signed and dated by the author. Copies of

evidence can only be accepted if the original has been seen by a member of staff. In these instances the copy must be annotated and signed by the member of staff to show that the original has been seen. The evidence must also correspond with the period of time where your work/performance was affected.

Severely adverse personal circumstances beyond your control or ability to foresee include serious illness or death of a member of the immediate family; serious debilitating illness, chronic or acute, involving an authorized absence from study of at least three weeks, for example to undertake a course of chemotherapy; a serious accident or acute illness occurring immediately before or at the time of the assessments concerned; other unforeseen circumstances, of equivalent weight, that have seriously disrupted the ability to study, for example the need to care for a very ill child over a number of weeks.

Examples of circumstances which would not be acceptable grounds for deferral include minor illness (such as a cold), manageable illness or indisposition; circumstances arising from paid employment; circumstances which arise from negligence or carelessness, for example failure by the student to get up on time, failure to attend at the right time or location for submission of work, failure to back up computer work; circumstances which could have been avoided by good planning, for example holiday or travel arrangements, including allowance for delays and cancellations.

(The lists above are examples of acceptable and unacceptable circumstances in relation to requests for deferral, but they do not represent an exhaustive definition of such circumstances).

Applying for Deferral of Coursework You must submit a request for deferral of assessment of coursework before the final submission deadline for work in the module.

To apply for a deferral of assessment of a piece of coursework you must complete the appropriate forms. These should be submitted to the Faculty Student Advice Centre on or before the final submission deadline for the module.

If you apply for deferral for work which you have already submitted and you are granted a deferral, please note any mark awarded for the work concerned will be declared void, even if it is a pass. A deferral means you have to retake the assessment.

Deferral of coursework is considered by a Faculty Deferrals Panel. Where your deferral request is approved, and unless otherwise agreed by your

programme leader, your submission deadline is deferred to the next available reassessment submission deadline. Please check, as follows 



For deferral requests for work due in semester 2: Deferred submission deadline - Monday 20 August 2018.



For deferral requests for work due in semester 3: Deferred submission deadline – Monday 10 December 2018.

Deferrals which are not completed at the next available assessment opportunity will become fails. If however your circumstances prevent you from submitting all deferral work, you must contact the Head of Studies urgently and before the deferred submission deadline for the work.

For further details on the deferral process, please refer to the Requests for the deferral of assessments on the grounds of extenuating circumstances leaflet available from the Faculty Student Advice Centre.

Long term illness, conditions or disabilities are not covered by thedeferral procedure. If you are unsure whether your circumstances warrant deferral, please seek advice from the Faculty Disability Co-coordinator or the Faculty Student Advice Centre. Failed work and reassessment

Below is a brief overview of the reassessment regulations; more information on reassessment can be found in the Section on ‘Assessment’ in the Taught Programme Academic Regulations www.dmu.ac.uk/scheme-regulations The module pass mark is 50%. If you fail a module (i.e. at the end of the semester your overall module mark is less than 50%) you will not receive credit for it and therefore you may not meet the award requirements for your programme. If you do not meet the award requirements for your programme and have sufficient reassessment opportunity, you will be required to retrieve the failure in order to obtain an award. This is known as a reassessment.

All postgraduate taught students have one reassessment opportunity in each module. Additionally, postgraduate taught students have a maximum of 30 credits of reassessment opportunity. Provided you have reassessment opportunity remaining, you will be offered reassessment if you fail a module.

You must pass (at 50%) reassessment modules. Reassessment module grades

are capped at 50%. A student may not be assessed more than three times in one module – i.e. a first attempt and two reassessment attempts.

As you cannot progress or achieve an award until successful completion of any reassessments, it is vital that you attempt and submit all reassessments on or before the reassessment submission deadlines.

In certain defined circumstances, it is possible to make a formal appeal against failures on module(s) through the University Regulations.

Notification of results

Individual coursework results will be provided to you during the course of the year by Module Tutors who will also provide formative feedback on your progress. Individual coursework results are provisional until ratified by a programme assessment board. Your Programme Leader/Year Tutor will monitor your progress across your programme of study.

At the end of your programme, ratified awards will be notified to you via myDMU. A formal notification of your results will normally be sent to you in November.

Please note that, under the Data Protection Act, any information we hold about you is confidential, and thus we regret we cannot discuss your record or release your results to parents, relatives or friends without your written permission.

Academic Offences and the Academic Practice Officer

The University defines an academic offence as: ‘…an act which is intended to modify or evade in an unauthorised manner and by unfair means the condition of assessment specified by the University in relation to a programme leading to a University award…’

Academic offences are taken very seriously by the University. Bad academic practice is defined by the University as the presentation of work that is not your own but as if it were.

It is perhaps surprisingly very easy to fall into this trap, especially in your first year at university when things are unfamiliar, you are trying to manage a number of assessment deadlines and you may be juggling work, family commitments and study. There are a number of ways to avoid falling into this trap including: 



 

managing your work effectively throughout the year. You will have your assessment task details and hand-in dates from the beginning of the academic year). Do not wait until the night before to write your essay/book review etc. remembering to make a note of full details of all sources (books, journals, internet source, etc.) used when researching for an assessment. Get into the habit of doing this, it will save you time in the long run; referring to the guidelines for referencing and citation in your Programme Handbook and provided by the library and CLaSS; asking your Module Tutor or the Module Leader if you are unsure about any aspect of the assessment tasks.

Collusion Collusion is defined by the University as the deliberate attempt to gain advantage by presenting work that is not solely the student’s own as if it were, where the source of the unreferenced work is that of another student who has connived to deceive.

All programmes in the Faculty offer the opportunity for collaborative work with peers (group presentations, seminar papers and presentations, collaborative projects, etc.); indeed we encourage you to work with others and to develop the skills associated with teamwork and collaborative learning. However, unless you are explicitly instructed to plan, organise and write an assignment in a group of two or more then you must plan, organise and write your assignment on your own.

Plagiarism Plagiarism is defined by the University as the deliberate attempt to gain advantage by presenting work that is not your own but as if it were. This is a very serious academic offence and at its most serious could lead to exclusion from the University. If you can get into good habits early in your programme then you should not fall into this trap or be tempted to.

Please see your Module Tutor for more help and guidance on how to develop the academic skills which will ensure that you avoid academic offences.

All students are required to keep a portfolio containing their notes and workin-progress for each module. Should you be called for an interview, you will be asked to bring this portfolio with you. Failure to do so might count against you.

If your work is described in feedback from your marking tutor as demonstrating any of the above you should expect the following to happen:  

Student complaints and appeals processes

Academic appeals Your tutors should give you feedback on your marks. This will often be face to face so you will have the chance to discuss your mark. Sometimes you are given written feedback and if you are concerned about the mark you have been given you should first seek advice from your Programme Leader.

Programme Assessment Boards meet in at the end of each semester and ratify (approve) your marks. Your ratified results are then published via myDMU. You will not be able to question an academic judgement, but there are two grounds on which you can appeal against the ratified decision of the Programme Assessment Board. These are:

That there were demonstrable errors in the conduct of the assessment process which are likely to have made a real difference to the outcome.

That there have been errors in the conduct or in the consequent decisions of the Programme Assessment Board.

In both cases, you will be required to provide evidence.

Raising concerns and queries It is our intention as a Faculty to deal with your concerns and queries as quickly and as efficiently as possible. It is therefore beneficial if concerns are raised as quickly as possible, to enable us to address the problem before it is too late. In order to help us in this, please take a note of the person who is dealing with your enquiry. This will help us follow up on the query should there be a need to do so.

If you are unhappy about the advice you have received, or have encountered any difficulties in obtaining advice and guidance, you should put these in writing and forward this written explanation to the relevant member of staff, as follows:   

The Faculty Manager about any issues relating to a member of the academic support or administrative staff The Faculty Student Advice Centre if you have any personal or course related difficulties.

The relevant member of staff will consult with appropriate colleagues and respond to you in 10 working days during term time (a longer response period may be required outside term time to account for staff holidays). You can collect your work after the Assessment Board from your Programme Team.

Evaluation of Module

An online questionnaire will be on Blackboard towards the end of the module and we will ask you to complete this confidential questionnaire about your experience on the module. The aim of this questionnaire is to help find ways in which the module may be modified or improved for next year.
