Carolyn Hiler spent her childhood in the New York area, filling up sketchbooks with drawings of people and animals (such as Clyde the 5-segmented worm and his wife Clarice, kids Claudette and Clarence and their pet parrot, Clovis) and filling up notebooks with profound, suspenseful stories (how will that 12 year-old girl with the long blonde hair survive as the new kid in town, with only her ESP and her horse?). Eventually, while continuing to accumulate sketchbooks of goofball drawings and free associations, she moved to California, got her degree in Fine Art, a master’s degree in Art Therapy, and worked as a psychotherapist in private practice. In 2011, A Zillion Dollars was officially born as the perfect merger of her interests in humor, design, and relationships. Can anyone tell from these drawings done at age 9 that Carolyn will grow up to be an art therapist and cartoonist?
Since then, her comics have appeared in numerous Chicken Soup for the Soul books, The Therapist magazine, in books and newspapers internationally, and featured on Gizmodo and Buzzfeed. Her totebag “This is the Bag I Always Forget To Take To the Store� was featured on the Today show in 2012. In the spring of 2015, A Zillion Dollars products were featured in Stationery Trends magazine and in Floral Management magazine.
Carolyn in her home studio in the mountains, hard at work developing funny ideas and astute cultural observations, in the fine company of her geriatric basset/pit/lab/ shepherd mix Omar.
