HowMumbaikars will rejuvenate?

SHIFT

Due to less of quality and approachable open spaces People opting to spend theirmajor recreational time on Alternative Amenities (Multiplexes, discotheques, pubs, junk food restaurants, OTTplatforms.)

Reasoning to this Public open spaces are getting encroached (Slum dwellers, developers)

Due to thisMumbai issuffering with lack of Public open spaces (Currently itis1.24 Sq.m/person; as per UN’s Sustainable Development Goals

ECOLOGY

The Relationsof organismto one another and to theirphysical surroundings Ecology stands on 4principles

Governmentwantsto revive ZOO

Reviving zoo will result into harming animals again

Instead of zoo. Ithas tobe a human interaction space, think tank

Open spaces encroachment

Encroachment of Open spacesare mostly because of their dying state

Government will be required to initiate competition :Public Participation program

Where people must visit Jijamata udyan (Site); the proposed site above to study the possibility, method to maintain and to earn money from Open spaces. Principal idea of this program is to get back all encroached and defunct open spaces of Mumbai city withpublic participation.

A competition isfor all listed encroached open spaces, residual defunctopen paces in particular wards and neighborhood.

Competition demands and idea for the setup of 10- 20open spaces annually

10-20 ideas

Best 5 –10 ideaswillget selectby jury and scrutinize by design, planner and all req. official.

After go ahead from bodies & Governmentwill fund the project and assign contractorteam to develop the same

Idea is to build neighborhood community and take care of the particular open space to sustain it longer. Thismay improvise mental, physical and social health.

Hence, Architecture setup requirement;for the upcoming body (Who’s going to teach the methods as well as take care of all the norms and regulations for this program)

Simultaneously going to run this institute which resides; (Bio domes, Botanical expo block, Ecology center, Visitor center, Souvenir arena, Amphitheatre, Filtration pond and garden) (Jijamata udyan) –As a centralized prototype (incubation) for Citizens and tourists.

Ecology body isan upcoming dedicated body for Mumbai open spaces, which will run under M.C.G.M (Municipal body of theCity Mumbai)

Basalt quarry

“ Its really about allowing nature to re-establish itself ”

A completely barren basalt quarry restoration landscape design is done by M/S.Prabhakhar P Bhagwat Associate, a landscape firm, over a period of eight yearsfrom 1977 to 1985.

There are close to 3000 mines in India that produce various minerals. Close to Vadodara sits a former basalt quarry that speaks to the resilience of nature; a site that forces one to question the various manners in which we interact with nature.

Task:

while I was interning at PBB, got the opportunity to do research and make presentation on this pre-eminent project, and it taught me, how to create a self-sustaining ecosystem. Guided and inspired me, to work more on thisagenda.

The top soil waslayered on the rock;thistop soil became mulch and created the microenvironments necessary for the growth of grasses, native shrubs, and trees.

Natural mother earth Mined for mineralsextraction
Mining process stopped and restoration begins
Quarry isnow protected forest.
“What was once a barren quarry is now a protected forest.”

A nearby seasonal streams was diverted to fill the quarry basin.

In the making for close to 8 years - the site is a result of in-depth knowledge and a curated process that ultimately led to the rejuvenation of land and the creation of multiple microecosystems.

It has allowed for interactions between the variousforms of flora and also fauna.

The site is a rejection of the conventionally accepted hierarchy between man and nature.

The outcome was clear – to create a selfsustaining ecosystem.

“The idea of designing this space by not only just for recreation, but also spaces that have begun to lend a sense of identity to the city. They have been a response to the existent plant material, and to the relationship with the water bodies that surround it.”

Task:

• Designdevelopment process diagram of Phase - I

• Siteanalysis diagram

• Masterlayout rendering

• Physical hand model for study.

The wetlands that have been incorporated into the design of this park sit adjacent to a public lake. The development of the lake required working with various NGOs invested within thisarea.

Ihave worked with design team during my Internship (2015) and continued as Junior Architect for execution in 2017-2018.

Linear Park, spread over 6000 odd sq.mts, sits in the shadow of one of the tallest residential buildings - World One. It is a zigzag strip of land between a towering residential building and an extremely busy road and is divided into four zones; each zone comprising symbolic representationsof places in the city.

Kharawala estate

An intensive exercise in spacemaking; a design that supports the idea of living that is intertwined with the existing landscape within the space. It celebrates that which was, and imagines an extension of a life that is already expressing itself. The planning of the space in question was about building connections; and then about preservation.

The overall space is an experimentation with materiality; and continuously transgressing boundaries between the built and the natural – becoming a backdrop for a long-established method of living.
