LETTER FROM THE EDITOR KITCHENS COOK UP MEMORIES
I
t’s funny how my most cherished memories revolve around the kitchen. One of my earliest memories is of a 3-year-old version of myself staring up at my Grandma Gossie as she cranked tomatoes through her grinder in the first step of a process that created the most amazing Italian “gravy” I will ever taste in my life. One of my happiest memories is of coming home from kindergarten on cold, upstate New York winter days and watching my Grandma Killigrew — yes, I’m half Irish and half Italian — make me the most delicious grilled cheese sandwiches in her 100-year-old cast iron skillet that had been handed down to her from her grandmother. We’d laugh, talk, tease each other and eat. It wasn’t Disneyland. It wasn’t a new bike on Christmas morning. But it’s easily my most cherished childhood memory. So it’s not a surprise that as an adult, I have always made sure the kitchens in my homes were the focal point. When I bought the historic house I’m in now, the first thing my wife and I did was bust out a wall and double the size of the kitchen. Good thing, too. A year later, we had 85 people for our carbo-loading party before the P.F. Chang’s Rock N Roll Marathon. A year after she died, Grandma Gossie’s gravy recipe is still creating memories. So it’s with good reason that our Scottsdale Living staff puts a lot of effort into giving readers plenty of ideas for things to do with their kitchens. That’s where friends and family gather. That’s where holidays are shared. That’s where memories are created and live. I have a 100-year-old cast iron skillet in my cupboard that will attest to that.
