Here are the Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers in Arizona U.S. News & World Report, the global authority in hospital rankings and consumer advice, released its Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers ratings for 2025 and 23 Arizona facilities were ranked as “high performing.”

Ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) provide same-day surgical care for common procedures such as colonoscopies, cataract surgeries, hip/knee replacements and surgical treatment of enlarged prostate.

Chet Samuelson helps grow BOK Financial’s regional impact in a very short time

S

ince Chet Samuelson became Arizona market CEO for BOK Financial in 2022, he has helped grow the bank’s presence in Arizona, earning it a reputation as one of the state’s top mid-sized banks.

Az Business talked with Samuelson about his successes.

Az Business: What do you see as a strength of BOK Financial?

Chet Samuelson: We are there for our clients, providing guidance advice. We don’t sell them anything. We just find solutions to their everyday problems or offer what they need from a strategic perspective.

Things like, “Hey, I’m thinking about retirement and what does my business look like and how do I take care of my employees?” Instead of purely thinking about profit to the bank and running fees and doing a process, we understand what are truly the most important things. And so for us, it’s been very successful and rewarding to really invest in the employees, invest in our teams, invest in our communities and now that’s producing great results as far as new business and great satisfied clients.

AB: How do you describe your leadership style?

CS: My leadership style starts with understanding where we want to go and understanding what we all need to do. We build a roadmap and then I just let everyone go and provide guidance. My door’s open and I

tell everybody, “If my door’s open, I expect you to walk in.” My leadership style is never asking somebody to do something I wouldn’t do myself. I don’t ask my team to stay late if I’m not staying late, but I like to have fun. And so we try to figure out ways to go out and do team building events together, whether it’s going bowling or doing things in the community. So, my leadership style leans toward leading by example, being there to support and figuring out where we all want to get to in the end.

AB: What are your goals for BOK Financial?

CS: We’ve got financial goals and we all understand what those are. But my primary goal is to continue to build what I call a work family and a work family is built on trust, transparency and really holding each other accountable. I would like to continue to really focus on that internally with our teams. So, my biggest goal for the next year is to continue to build that collaboration and transparency with our team and then continue to build our brand in the community and build it the way we want to — boots on the ground in front of our clients, really providing first-class advisory service.

AB: What’s your industry outlook for the next year?

CS: Bumpy. There’s a lot of uncertainty as far as what the new political environment looks like. Most of our clients have some sort of international exposure, so we need to consider what tariffs look like. Interest rates are still high. You have to look at all the different cuts and impact of those cuts.

It could be bumpy, but if you’re prepared and you sit down and use your advisors, you’ll be able to navigate this uncertainty just fine.

EXECUTIVE COUNCIL CHARITIES Executive Council Charities has been giving back to youth in the Valley for more than four decades and continues to take the lead in making positive changes in kids’ lives to help them overcome adversity and reach their potential during their most pivotal years. Through programs like Employment Without Barriers, Workforce Villages and Workforce and Housing Training (WHaT), SJW has not only connected individuals to quality-paying jobs but has also provided critical resources such as transitional housing, training and support.

SOLARI CRISIS & HUMAN SERVICES Solari Crisis & Human Services answers all calls and texts made in Arizona to 988, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, as well as to its statewide crisis line at 844-534HOPE. THE HOME OF RECORD PROJECT The Home of Record Project hash a passionate mission to provide transitional housing and financial assistance to veterans who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

In a very short time, multiple veterans have been given assistance without all the bureaucracy of local, state, and federal government where veterans often slip through the cracks.

Treasure House, founded by Brenda and Kurt Warner, is a beacon of hope and opportunity for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs). This nonprofit provides a unique residential community designed to help individuals with IDDs transition into adulthood with independence, purpose, and inclusion. It’s not just a home; it’s a place where dreams are nurtured and individuals are empowered to live fully.

WASTE NOT For more than 35 years, Waste Not has been on a mission to eliminate food waste and hunger in Arizona by rescuing fresh, nutritious food and delivering it directly to organizations that serve people in need.

The local nonprofit works to accomplish this by creating sustainable food systems that help people and the planet flourish through innovative partnerships. Waste Not also plays a key role in recovering surplus food from large-scale events held in the Valley.

W

hen CHASSE Building Team was founded in 2007 with just 10 employees and a handful of projects amid the recession, its mission was “building to make a difference,” both in its clients’ construction experience and in the greater community. All these years later, a lot of things have changed for the award-winning general contractor. For starters, they now have more than 250 team members and over $600 million in client engagement – on average – across Arizona each year. In recent years, CHASSE also became a 100% teammate owned firm by launching an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).

The mission, however, remains the same.

CHASSE Building Team is proud it has continued “building to make a difference” both in big ways and small every single day. SOUTHERN ARIZONA Batteries spark economy One key element driving that continued economic growth is the emergence of Southern Arizona as a hub for battery manufacturing, driven by significant investments and strategic initiatives.

A pivotal development is the construction of American Battery Factory’s (ABF) 2 million-square-foot lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cell gigafactory in Tucson. This facility, set to be the largest of its kind in the United States, represents a $1.2 billion investment and is projected to create up to 1,000 jobs, contributing approximately $3.1 billion in economic impact to Arizona.

“In support of battery manufacturing, we will travel to the Battery Show, which is one of the large battery-related industry events,” says Kevin Burke, deputy director of the Office of Economic Initiatives for Tucson. “We also attended SPIE, International Society for Optics and Photonics.”

Burke adds, “We’re expecting [ABF] to break ground in the next couple of weeks.

We’ve had a lot of interest from other battery manufacturers and we’re confident that we will turn some of those into actual projects as well.”

Several factors contribute to Southern Arizona’s attractiveness for battery manufacturing: • Strategic location: Tucson’s proximity to major transportation routes and the U.S.-Mexico border facilitates efficient distribution and logistics.

Located at Central Arizona College’s Superstition Mountain Campus in Apache Junction, the 19,850-square-foot Accelerator will provide workforce training focused on the manufacturing process of cylindrical batteries used for electric vehicles and other applications. Specifically, as the program is designed to develop regional talent who will join LG Energy Solution’s Queen Creek facility after completion, members of LG Energy Solution Arizona will provide hands-on training for the facility’s manufacturing equipment and safety processes and incorporate simulation technology for personnel training.

The battery-focused Future48 Workforce Accelerator marks the second training center launched in partnership with Central Arizona College and Pinal County. In 2021, Arizona launched Drive48, the inaugural Future48 Workforce Accelerator, an automotive training assembly facility in Coolidge with partners including the ACA, Central Arizona College, Pinal County, the City of Casa Grande, and Lucid. Drive48 features multiple assembly robots and individual training rooms to prepare students for jobs in automotive assembly manufacturing.

“We will create 1,500 new employment opportunities overall by 2027, significantly thriving the local economy and further cementing Arizona’s growing reputation as a hub for advanced manufacturing,” says Richard Ra, president of LG Energy Solution Arizona. “This workforce training center at CAC will be a cornerstone of our effort, preparing a highly skilled workforce for the jobs of tomorrow for Arizonans by awakening their infinite potential.”

The Future48 Workforce Accelerators are modeled after the successful Drive48 facility in Pinal County. Since launching in 2021, more than 2,000 students have graduated from the program, with many currently working at Lucid’s Advanced Manufacturing Plant in Casa Grande.

“We’re incredibly to launch another Future48 Workforce Accelerator,” says Sandra Watson, president and CEO of the Arizona Commerce Authority. “The battery-focused Accelerator will play a critical role in equipping students with the skills needed for battery manufacturing careers in Arizona, where we have thousands of new jobs coming online.”

Resolution Copper’s partnerships with educational partners (and community stakeholders) such as Superior Unified School District, Superior Chamber of Commerce, Rebuild Superior Inc., the Town of Superior, Globe Unified School District Robotics, Queen Valley Fire Department and the Superior Fire Department has proven useful in supporting the growth of skilled talent.

“We have provided $1.2 million of funding over four years for STEM and robotics programs in the Superior Unified School District,” says Tyson Nansel, principal advisor of communications for Resolution Copper. “Since 2002, we’ve awarded over $850,000 in scholarships to more than 250 local students, helping to ensure that today’s students become tomorrow’s skilled professionals in Arizona’s mining industry. Lastly, our recent Resolution Copper Apprentice Program is designed to provide the training for all these positions to be filled locally.”

Commercial property activity While new battery facility projects are booming throughout Southern Arizona, real estate development in other markets also continues to grow.

reducing property taxes for developers who improve property values significantly.

“We approved a number of mixed-use projects that essentially are incentivized because the way the GPLET works,” Burke explains. “[Project owners] construct the project when the certificate of occupancy is issued, they deed that property over to the city. The city takes ownership for a period of up to eight years, and because the city is the owner of the property, it’s no longer subject to ad valorem tax.”

Many of the GPLET mixed-use and residential construction projects are centered in Downtown Tucson, supported by the city. “The mayor and council recently adopted a new zoning designation,” Burke says. “We call it the CCT or the Community Corridors Tool. That Community Corridors Tool is a wholesale upzoning for commercial properties across the city.”

Other Southern Arizona regions are also bolstering downtown commercial projects.

Yuma is targeting redevelopment in its downtown corridor, offering incentives to attract commercial investment. Sierra Vista is focusing on adaptive reuse and infill commercial development downtown.

“The demand for well-managed, highintegrity commercial projects keeps our teams busy across multiple sectors,” notes Nate Lowrie, CEO and owner of Bjerk Builders, “especially when our partners want to upgrade or expand intelligently. We have a great state and great people building trust and long-term partnerships.”

Infrastructure investments An integral component of overall growth in Tucson is its infrastructure.

“We’ve been able to construct infrastructure commensurate with the population growth,” Burke says.

Tucson’s infrastructure expansion and improvements within the state of Arizona, according to Burke, have historically been incredibly disadvantaged in the share of infrastructure dollars that have flowed to Southern Arizona versus those allocated to Maricopa County. As a result, the city has found creative means of funding muchneeded infrastructure revitalization, “The Tucson community has voted in favor of taxing ourselves to pay for infrastructure,” Burke says. “The first was for public safety infrastructure. The other was specifically for roadway reconstruction and resurfacing throughout the city.”

make significant progress on repaving all neighborhood streets, collector roads and arterial roads in the city.

Resolution Copper’s billion-dollar potential Resolution Copper released two major and exciting announcements in April, which will help move the Superior mining project one step closer to feeding $1 billion into the Southern Arizona economic pipeline annually.

The first announcement revealed that the U.S. Forest Service issued a legally required 60-day notice of the agency’s intent to republish a Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) for the Resolution Copper

project. This is a positive step forward for the Resolution Copper project after more than a decade of rigorous, independent review and consultation with local communities and Native American tribes.

Once all final permits are obtained, the project will create economic opportunities for the Town of Superior and the entire Copper Triangle region as one of the largest investments in rural Arizona. The Town of Superior will be granted land from the Federal government to use for economic expansion and diversification opportunities.

The other significant news came from a White House announcement, designating the Resolution project as part of the Federal

Additionally, Resolution Copper has the potential to employ 1,500 workers in Arizona, with an estimated $134 million per year in total compensation. It will also generate approximately 2,200 indirect jobs, with an estimated $136 million in compensation, meaning it could support some 3,700 jobs and $270 million per year in total compensation at full production.

Additionally, according to Nansel, Resolution Copper continues to prioritize economic growth by keeping jobs local and supporting surrounding communities. By prioritizing local hiring and partnering with area businesses, Resolution Copper is demonstrating its commitment to building a resilient, interconnected economy. Success stories like Oddonetto Construction, 4-Winds Contracting and Superior Environmental — businesses that have expanded with the project’s support — reinforce this and highlight the positive impact of Resolution Copper and its partnerships.

“We are committed to local vendors and hiring — more than 90% of the current 300 employees and contractors at Resolution Copper live within 40 miles of the project,” Nansel adds, “which will certainly provide a long-term investment in the region.”

Typically used in the ICU or ER, Ceribell can detect seizures that are not visible to the human eye. When paired with Clarity, a machine learning algorithm, the Ceribell system interprets EEG signals and provides both audible and visual alerts to help doctors respond quickly to the seizure.

“It was only a few days after we taught the Emergency Room doctors and nurses how to use Ceribell that they called me and had a patient who could really benefit from it,” Dr. Kale says.

This patient was not showing outward symptoms of a seizure but doctors were concerned for their safety so they used Ceribell to find a clear answer. The Ceribell bands are applied to the patient’s head at the bedside and the AI can detect seizure right away with very high clinical accuracy.

“Before Ceribell, the emergency room would have to send me scans and then I’d have to pull them up at home and sometimes the whole process would take an hour or more,” Dr. Kale says. “With Ceribell it takes a fraction of the time to get the scans.”

rizona’s cannabis industry is the embodiment of the adage, “Change is the only constant in life.”

From the years-long election and legislative battles that culminated in legalization in 2020 to the policy and business operations challenges facing the young but quickly maturing industry today, Arizona’s top cannabis leaders are a determined yet nimble group of individuals on the leading business edge with backgrounds, experiences and lessons learned as varied as the state they serve. But to a person, they have their eyes on a singular goal: a commitment to providing consumers with safe, regulated, quality cannabis products.

“The team, the product, and the cash,” says Kirk Schmitz, Vice President of operations at Grow Sciences, a craft cannabis grower, developer and supplier headquartered in Phoenix.

Impact of legalization Arizona legalized medical marijuana in 2010, with the first sales coming along in

2012. Retail cannabis sales for adult use in Arizona began in January 2021 – a record 10 weeks from Arizona voters approving legalization in the 2020 election to the opening of retail businesses. In brief, Arizona law states that cannabis is available only to those 21 years and older; it is legal to possess up to one ounce of marijuana and to grow up to six plants per household; and it is illegal to smoke marijuana in public.

Arizona’s nascent cannabis industry attracted an array of investors and entrepreneurs from different industries and backgrounds – corporate law, banking, real estate, concessions and hospitality, biosciences and pharmacy, marketing,

medical device sales, health and wellness, media.

Jason Vedadi, CEO of Story Cannabis, which operates 19 dispensaries in Arizona, Maryland, Ohio and New Jersey, said getting into cannabis presented “an opportunity to work in an uncharted territory and build a company in an emerging industry from the ground up.”

Ryan Hermansky, CEO and Founder of the Flagstaff-based Noble Herb greenhouse and dispensary and the Pure Edibles cannabis infusion products, said it was “intriguing” to be part of an industry starting completely from scratch.

were all learning every aspect of this business together,” says Hermansky, who joined the industry when medical marijuana became legal in 2012. “It’s incredible to see how the industry has grown in Arizona, and how professional and well developed the marijuana industry has become.”

Getting into the business Michael O’Brien, CEO of Sonoran Roots, a vertically integrated craft cannabis company in Tempe, said he got into the business, from the legal profession, in 2020 by accident.

“I was helping one of my partners with some legal work, and a few months later we decided to partner up,” he said. “I was inspired by the passion in the industry, the potential for growth, and the opportunity to transition from the legal to the business side of things.”

Since retail legalization in 2021, Arizona’s market quickly expanded but is now showing signs of maturation, the natural business development stage where growth slows, competition intensifies, and businesses move their focus from growth to efficiency, differentiation, and sustainability. Cannabis businesses in other states have gone through similar stages.

Arizona’s cannabis industry achieved 80

sales totaling $1.1 billion in 2024, according to the latest available records. The state joined the billion-dollar club in November 2024, when the industry generated $23.7 million in tax revenue and pushed the state’s all-time marijuana tax revenue total to more than $1 billion. This revenue supports various public policy programs ranging from community colleges to local law enforcement and first responders, the Arizona Highway User Revenue Fund, the Justice Reinvestment Fund and the Attorney General for enforcement costs.

And in October 2024, Arizona expanded its cannabis program by permitting home delivery of recreational marijuana to adults 21 and older – stimulating market growth by broadening public access.

“Adaptability, being nimble, and developing relationships are everything,” says George Thimsen, Partner and Chief Revenue Officer of Timeless, a cannabis brand available in several cannabis-legal states, including Arizona. Thimsen says he was attracted to cannabis “because it’s more than just a business – it’s a cultural shift, a movement, and an opportunity to build something meaningful.”

Building a business Ann Torrez, Executive Director of the Arizona Dispensaries Association, which

works with the industry on business practices and legislative and regulatory representation, agrees.

“I didn’t enter the cannabis industry to follow trends – I came to build something meaningful,” she says. “I’ve spent over a decade advocating for safe access, smart regulation and responsible business practices. This isn’t just a career for me – it’s a commitment to community, integrity and progress.”

It takes a village to build a successful cannabis industry. The industry itself involves license holders, which range from growers and processors to distributors and dispensary owners – in industry parlance, “from seed to sale.” It also involves the ancillary companies and individuals that support the license holders’ operations.

These range from attorneys to financial advisors, lobbyists and marketers.

And as with cannabis businesses around the U.S., the Arizona industry faces many market and operational challenges. As Kim Prince, founder of Proven Media and a fixture in the industry since 2014, says, “grit and perseverance are essential” to success.

Primary among these challenges is that all legalization of cannabis has taken place in individual states. At federal level, marijuana is a Schedule 1 drug under the

Controlled Substances Act and therefore remains illegal. But 41 states, including Arizona, and the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, have made it legal for medical purposes. Twenty-three states, including Arizona, have legalized cannabis for adult use.

Looking at the market However, this created 23 distinct markets, each with its own sets of rules and regulations for cannabis production and sale, and rules of enforcement for not following the law. This also means that sales across state lines are prohibited and there are no federal income tax write-offs that other business owners and operators enjoy.

Finally, banks can – and some actually do – stop working with companies that are in the business.

Add to that any number of legal, market and taxation challenges, including interpretation of a federal law allowing sale of unregulated hemp-based products with low levels of THC when Arizona law bars the sale of any THC products without a proper license. Some liquor stores and smoke shops have been selling those items, even to buyers under age 21, effectively bypassing state rules and undercutting the state-licensed dispensaries that are following the law. Arizona Attorney General

Kris Mayes recently announced the state will enforce its stricter standards.

“I was drawn to the cannabis industry because it represents one of the most dynamic and rapidly evolving sectors in modern business,” says Greta Brandt, President of The Flower Shop dispensaries in Arizona, Utah and New Jersey. “The unique intersection of state legalization and federal uncertainty created a landscape filled with both challenges and opportunities, requiring adaptability, innovation and a deep understanding of regulator frameworks.”

Brandt says cannabis is more than just a business. “It’s a movement toward normalization, medical advancement, and entrepreneurial ingenuity.”

A tough business Brian Warde, Co-founder of The Prime Leaf dispensary in Tucson and who also works in government affairs for the Dispensary Association, says the work never stops in cannabis. “Patience and resilience are key,” he adds.

“In the beginning, constant adaptation is necessary and requires you to be hands-on in every aspect of your business, ready to pivot, and open to uncertainty,” he says.

“Building strong connected teams will help withstand the ups and downs of the

industry and is essential.

Sara Gullickson, CEO of The Cannabis Business Advisors, says planning also is important. “Plan A, B and C” in order to be ready for whatever happens, she says.

Sara Presler, General Counsel at Mohave Cannabis Co., which cultivates and sells cannabis in Ft. Mojave, on the Colorado River in western Arizona, says there is no substitute for foundational knowledge.

“Take time to learn the basics, understand the rules, and develop a strategy,” she says. “With foundational knowledge and the experience it brings, it’s easier to see change as an opportunity to adapt and not a roadblock.”

Perhaps it has been fighting these fights and standing up for the industry that has helped foster these executives’ dedication to cannabis. Simply put, they are putting their money where their mouths are.

Love of the business Fife Symington, founder and CEO of Copperstate Farms, feels that probably more intensely than most. A love of agriculture and experience growing greenhouse vegetables prompted him to join the cannabis industry in 2016, building his own agricultural operation in a shuttered commercial tomato greenhouse in the town of Snowflake, Ariz., nestled in AB | May - June 2025 81

“Earning the trust of the people of Snowflake and converting their tomato greenhouse to cannabis cultivation was a career highlight,” he says.

Laura Bianchi, co-founder of the Scottsdale law firm of Bianchi & Brandt, says that particularly in the cannabis industry, it is critical to be open to change – a challenge for any Type-A executive.

“Long-term success hinges on adaptability,” she says. “The landscape is constantly shifting with new regulations, challenges, opportunities and setbacks. To provide effective counsel and guide clients through unpredictable scenarios, flexibility is not just beneficial — it’s essential.”

Bianchi & Brandt co-founder Justin Brandt agrees.

“I’ve worn many hats—navigating compliance, structuring deals, litigating disputes, and advising clients through unprecedented legal gray areas,” he says.

“What this experience has taught me is that success in cannabis requires the ability to adapt and pivot quickly. At the same time, integrity is non-negotiable. In such a highly regulated and scrutinized environment, trust is everything—and maintaining it is essential for long-term success.”

Evolution As the industry continues to evolve, Lori Hicks, Operations Manager and Owner of the dispensary group Arizona Natural Concepts, says it is important for anyone

in the business to “know your value – be willing to act on instinct.” And she is beginning to see more women enter the space, “bringing expertise from other fields, as well as a much-needed perspective and approach to business.”

Part of that new approach can be found in The Flower Shop’s creation of a low-dose cannabis brand designed for women, which owner Brandt says is designed to empower more women to explore cannabis as part of their health and self-care routines, while inviting them into an industry in which they have been under-represented.

Another approach is Hwang’s BEST Dispensary, which she says is Arizona’s first and only luxury cannabis dispensary. The effort, she said, is to break the stigma of cannabis and redefine the retail experience with a high-end experience, elegant décor and a focus on education.

“I do see the culture shifting every day for the better, but there’s certainly a long way to go,” says Hicks, who joined the industry in 2017.

Lilach Mazor Power, Founder and CEO of Mazor Collective, a vertically integrated cannabis company that grows and sells directly to consumers and to dispensaries around Arizona, stresses the importance of embracing your own vision.

“Not everyone has to see it,” she says.

“The best ideas are often the ones people don’t immediately understand – because they’re ahead of the curve. I’ve learned to trust my vision, execute on what I believe in and make it happen.”

Reaching out And don’t be afraid to ask for help, says Marie Saloum, Founder and Owner of the Green Pharms dispensaries in Mesa and Flagstaff. “You need to realize that you might not always have the right answers,” she says. “Also, part of growing a business comes with a lot of loss.”

Keeping up to date on all aspects of the industry is also important, says A.J. Sullins, Owner-Operator of High Grade USA, which grows and sells its cannabis products in Arizona and Michigan.

“There are constantly changes in this industry, and it is ever important to stay up to date on regulation changes, market data, and the political climate,” he says.

Thimsen, of Timeless, agrees, adding that the education should also include regulators and consumers.

“It feels like we are just rounding first base, and the more we educate consumers and regulators – not just about products, but about the plant, the science, and its benefits – the faster we can round the bases to home plate and break down outdated stigmas and safely bring cannabis fully into the mainstream,” he says.

“We also have a responsibility to honor the legacy of those who fought for legalization and make sure that progress is inclusive, sustainable, and built for the long haul,” he adds. “The future of cannabis isn’t just about business, it’s about culture, responsibility, innovation, and advocacy.

And if we do it right, the best is still ahead of us.”

CUTTING THE CLUTTER How retail brands can earn their slice of a crowded market

I

t’s no secret that Phoenix is a thriving mecca for those who delight in fueling the economy with retail spending. In fact, analysts at Unacast called Phoenix the “Land of Seasoned Spenders” in a spotlight on the Top 10 Cities for Frequent Shoppers published last spring.

Phoenix topped the list, with the report noting the market’s expansive variation, from “high-end boutiques to the charming shops along Roosevelt Row in Downtown Phoenix, catering to a diverse range of tastes and budgets.”

As a shopper, consumer and Arizona native, the steady stream of new retail infusing the Phoenix metro makes my heart sing (my wallet and husband are less enamored, but I digress).

As a career marketer fortunate to represent numerous retail brands across the Valley and throughout Arizona over the past couple of decades (plus!), I have a slightly different perspective on the retail market. Helping clients stand out in a highly competitive – sometimes, dare I say, cluttered – market can be a true enigma.

Fortunately, I’m not one to back down from a challenge. My clients and team of Flutterflies can attest that we’ll gladly tackle those market-driven hurdles with the same gusto that I dedicate to my endless pursuit of “just one more” pair of shoes.

Having worked as a strategic partner and consulting with retailers of all shapes and sizes, from mom-and-pop boutiques to national franchises to industry leading luxury shopping centers, I can unequivocally tell you that it is possible to stand out in a crowded marketplace.

Strategic collaboration One emerging trend in marketing is the broadening acceptance of brand collaborations. I don’t mean influencer collabs, although of course those have a rightful place in contemporary marketing programs, too. What I’m really talking about is an approach that was historically frowned upon — even discouraged — by

Brands avoided aligning with other brands, competitive or otherwise, for a multitude of reasons. Predominantly, they were reluctant to share the spotlight or risk one brand overshadowing the other, especially in the case of earned media, where the resulting coverage is dictated by an editor or producer.

Today, we don’t have to look far to find dozens of examples of high-profile collaborations producing massive results for the participating brands. Nike and Apple.

Rather than fighting for first billing, these household names are joining forces — in admittedly unexpected ways, at times — to capture attention. What they’re proving is that there’s plenty of love to go around and consumers sharing their loyalty can actually pay off well.

Closer to home, major retailers are reaping the rewards smart partnerships can bring and producing commendable results. For example, Scottsdale Fashion Square, the retail jewel of the desert, recently joined forces with Phoenix Children’s to breathe new life into its holiday offering. The inaugural Trees for Hope display at the shopping center generated a swell in traffic while raising

Emphasis on the experience Another important strategy we’re seeing pay big dividends is the recognition that retail marketing isn’t just an attentiongrabbing store window; it’s bringing brands to life. It’s creating unique customer experiences and creating signature programs that let shoppers connect on a personal level.

One standout example locally is Downtown Tempe Authority’s stellar roster of signature events that bring people

together. The events are well organized and appeal to diverse crowds so downtown merchants benefit from plenty of traffic.

(More than 82,000 people clamored to experience the stunning life-size floral installations at the Tempe Blooms festival in January.)

The association takes engagement a step further by intentionally designing a sprawling event footprint that rewards attendees for traveling to activations situated near retailers, who in turn eagerly welcome looky-loos and paying customers alike.

Of course, heading into the heat of the summer makes those sorts of wandering outdoor activities less probable, but creative ingenuity gets people connecting with retailers during the typically slower summer season.
