Paul Hickman is President and CEO of the Arizona Bankers Association, a role he has held since 2011. In this capacity, he oversees the state and federal government relations operations of the Association and serves as the primary spokesperson for the banking industry in Arizona.
Prior to joining the Arizona Bankers Association, Paul Hickman held various positions on the staff of the late Senator John McCain, both in Washington, D.C. and Arizona. He began his tenure with the Senator during his first re-election campaign to the Senate in 1992 and served as his State Director for most of the 2000s. Hickman concluded his service to the Senator as the policy director for his fourth re-election to the Senate in 2010.
Paul holds B.S. and B.A. degrees, as well as a law degree from Arizona State University.
Mark McKinnon is a political advisor, reform advocate, columnist, and television producer. He was the creator and co-host of Showtime's Emmy-nominated hit documentary series "The Circus" the longest- running, most-watched unscripted show in the history of the network which ran for eight seasons.
McKinnon has worked for many causes, companies, and candidates, including President George W. Bush, Senator John McCain, late Governor Ann Richards, and Bono. He was the chief media advisor for five winning presidential primary and general election campaigns. Dedicated to bipartisanship, McKinnon helped start No Labels, an organization dedicated to bringing our parties together to problem solve and heal the partisan divide in our country.
“McKinnon is evidence that principled centrism is not an oxymoron,” wrote John Avalon in a Daily Beast column about the 25 Best Centrist Pundits. “McKinnon piloted John McCain’s 2008 primary campaign to victory. But he announced in advance that if Barack Obama won the Democratic nomination; he would ride off into the sunset rather than participate in the negative attacks he knew would be required. This is unheard of in the world of modern politics, where partisanship trumps principle as a matter of course.”
McKinnon has been a regular columnist for The Daily Beast, The London Daily Telegraph, and Vanity Fair, and was on the HBO show “The Newsroom” and Netflix’s “House of Cards.”
McKinnon attended the University of Texas at Austin and served as editor of the award-winning university newspaper, The Daily Texan. His quality of life is exceptionally enhanced by the enduring love and patience of his wife, Annie whom he started dating before he had a driver’s license.
Rob Nichols is the president and CEO of the American Bankers Association, the voice of the nation’s $23.7 trillion banking industry and the only organization that represents banks of all sizes and charters in Washington.
Since joining ABA in August 2015, Nichols has led ABA's advocacy efforts, working to ensure that banks of all sizes operate in a policy environment that allows them to best serve their customers and communities. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Nichols and ABA played a critical role in helping banks navigate unprecedented challenges. ABA resources and advocacy helped banks of all sizes rapidly deliver 90% of the $800 billion Paycheck Protection Program, the largest economic rescue plan ever deployed for the private sector, protecting more than 80 million Americans from job loss.
In 2019, Nichols encouraged all banks to offer low-cost, easy-to-use Bank On-certified accounts. The effort has been credited with reducing the number of unbanked in the U.S. to its lowest level ever. And ABA's award winning #BanksNeverAskThat public education campaign has won national recognition for empowering consumers to spot scams before they can do harm.
As the leader of one of Washington’s largest trade associations, Nichols has reshaped ABA's workplace. Since 2018, ABA has been certified as a Great Place to Work by independent analysts. Under his leadership, ABA has gender parity within the executive leadership team, and ABA hired its first external facing DEI expert to help banks expand their DEI programs.
Nichols joined ABA following 10 years at the helm of the Financial Services Forum, a nonpartisan economic policy and advocacy. During his time at the Forum, Nichols led the industry through the financial crisis and the Dodd-Frank Act, guiding his members and the broader banking sector in its policy response and the law’s implementation.
He began his career in public service in the West Wing as a White House aide in the George H.W. Bush administration.
Nichols is a recipient of the Alexander Hamilton Award, the highest honor of the Department of the Treasury. He also is consistently named as one of the most influential people in Washington by Washingtonian, and one of Washington's top lobbyists by The Hill. He is a graduate of the George Washington University and lives in the Washington area with his wife and two children.
