ABOUT THE PRESIDENT/CEO L. William Zahner, President/CEO, is a recognized expert in the field of architectural metals. He has authored two books detailing the use of metal in architecture which are used by students around the world to understand the application of architectural metal. In 2007 the American Institute of Architects awarded Mr. Zahner with an honorary membership for his dedication to the architectural profession, his devotion to spreading his knowledge of metal, and his innovations and contributions to architecture.

CREATING WITH ZAHNER “Zahner gave Morphosis their parameters for building the facades, which are flat sheets of aluminum folded, painted and mounted to vertical supports that incorporate railings for the exterior corridors. The architects took their parameters and designed an undulating pattern whose 3D model was given to Zahner for direct fabrication. No doubt the fairly seamless process came about through the ongoing collaboration of the two parties on a number of projects, many of which are schools: Cooper Union’s new academic building in New York City, Cornell’s Bill & Melinda Gates Hall in upstate New York, and the Cornell Tech Campus on New York City’s Roosevelt Island.”

Emerson College, Los Angeles The intersection of art and architecture Morphosis Architects

EMERSON COLLEGE Emerson College LA is designed by Morphosis with a series of custom facade systems design-engineered, manufactured, and installed by Zahner.

Zahner’s design team replaced the structural steel and developed automated fabrication technologies to reduce costs and increase efficiency. ZEPPS® panels were pre-fabricated in the Zahner shop, reducing the construction schedule by three months. Using ZEPPS® in lieu of traditional stud framing reduced the cost of labor in the field, resulting in over $400k in client savings.

MIAMI CITY VIEW PARKING STRUCTURE Zahner created three facades for the Miami City View Parking Structure in the Miami Design District. Three design teams worked with the architect of record to bring the facades to fruition: IwamotoScott (right), John Baldessari (below), and Leong Leong (next page). The engineering team at Zahner worked with the firms to design, manufacture, and install each of the unique facade systems.

Completed in 2015, Zahner’s involvement with the Miami City View project began with a Design Assist contract and the creation of a mockup at the Zahner campus (top). The design team further developed the concept, manufactured

the

components,

and

installed the facade in Miami, Florida. The Leong Leong facade was manufactured with a gold-colored titanium-coated stainless steel; the selective perforation and folded edges create a picotage-like surface in glowing metal (opposite).

The center of the structure’s facade, by artist John Baldessari, uses Zahner’s patented ImageWall® technology to create a vivid rendering on stainless steel using circular perforations removed from its surface. The blue facade, by IwamotoScott architects, is a custom-painted aluminum system with repeating and non-repeating forms which vary in depth, shape, size, and color.

MUSEUM GARAGE The Museum Garage is a seven-story mixed-use retail and parking structure located in Dacra’s Miami Design District. Featuring five dramatically different architectural facades the project celebrates diverse creativity in keeping with the development’s emphasis on innovative experiences in shopping and dining.

Terence Riley of K/R curated the project’s unique aesthetics recruiting designers from WORKac, J.MAYER.H, Clavel Arquitectos, Nicolas Buffe and K/R (Keenen/Riley). Each of these designers approached their part of the structure with a wholly unique vision, custom engineered and fabricated by Zahner.

HOOVER GARAGE AT STANFORD In collaboration with WRNS, Zahner assisted in developing the Hoover Garage. This parking structure is part of the Stanford Hospital and Clinics and was produced in association with Stanford University in California.

Hoover Garage is an open-air structure which uses a 3/16 perforated and anodized aluminum surface.

The back-side of the panels are cut and grooved at each corner of the panel to provide a more defined edge. The panels use the Zahner proprietary Drop & Lock™ panel technology, a feature of the Inverted Seam patent. This allows for flexible design and simple installation. Each panel is hung by inserts into the vertical extrusion.

BROOKLINE PLACE Elkus Manfredi Architects designed the Brookline Place Parking Structure for the Boston Children’s Hospital in Brookline, Massachusetts.

The architecture team engaged Zahner through a Design Assist contract to develop the stainless steel panel system.

Zahner provided a fully engineered custom attachment solution that enhanced the overall aesthetics while considering safety and load tolerances. Abstracted perforated and bumped imagery meant to resemble an ivy covered facade was achieved through use of the Zahner patented ImageWallÂŽ technology.

WYNWOOD GARAGE Wynwood Garage is a Faulders Studio-designed parking structure in Miami, Florida. Currently under a Design Assist contract with Zahner, the garage features a latticework of whitefinned panels that wrap around the entirety of the building, creating a unique textured surface for the 428-space parking garage.

THE FAIRMONT PACIFIC RIM The Fairmont Pacific Rim in Vancouver features a perforated and bumped metal screen wall.

Designed by James K.M. Cheng Architects, Zahner developed a perforated facade which would disguise the first few floors of office and parking structures, while allowing light and air to enter through the thousands of perforations.

Its unique surface design, a perforated and bumped texture, creates a subtle, glistening effect.

The bright annealed stainless steel material is processed with an Angel HairÂŽ finish developed by Zahner.

UCSF MISSION BAY MEDICAL CENTER For the ten-story UCSF parking facility in San Francisco, Zahner worked closely under a Design Assist contract to develop a smart facade with a compelling visual aesthetic. The project’s restrictive budget required an intelligent process to efficiently fabricate, ship, and install. Zahner met this challenge without compromising the design by using Design Assist to develop the client’s design into a simple yet elegant system. The project was achieved using only five panel types, each made up of a single extrusion type, anodized with a bronze finish.

MISSION BAY BLOCK 27 The Mission Bay Block 27 Parking Structure, located in San Francisco, is designed by WRNS Studio for Alexandria Real Estate. The structure houses 1,420 parking spaces on seven elevated levels and features a metal screen with perforated imagery of California’s redwood forests. This facade was design-engineered by the Design Assist Group and produced by Zahner.

WRNS Studio architects desired an abstract pattern composed of four distinct oval cut-outs.

They provided tree imagery, and Zahner Design Engineers processed the imagery into a myriad of circular shapes to abstract the form. For the surface, the Architects decided on a perforated bronzeanodized aluminum cladding, which covers the entirety of the metal scope for the garage.

LIVERPOOL DEPARTMENT STORE The most rapidly produced work of this scale completed with Zahner to date, the Liverpool Flagship Department Store is an example of what can be built using Zahner engineered products and automation systems. Designed

by Rojkind Arquitectos, the project was conceived and completed within a single year.

As a testament to the simplicity of installing ZEPPSÂŽ assemblies, Zahner shipped the units to Mexico City, where a third-party field team installed the panels without prior experience with the ZEPPSÂŽ technology. The system was installed ahead of schedule on a tight deadline.

Liverpool Flagship Department Store, Mexico City, Mexico

The facade encases a rooftop garden, three floors of shopping, and a three-story parking garage for shoppers at the Interlomas subdevelopment in Mexico City. This project functioned as a design-build project defined by the Design Assist team at Zahner. Zahner owned the anchor design and worked with the structural engineer to integrate the design seamlessly. Zahner provided Design Assist, engineering, fabrication and shipment. The project features the fabricated unitized panels to Mexico City, where local crews installed the facade without issues.

KAUFFMAN STADIUM Patented ZIRA™ technology enables artists and architects to automatically translate unique imagery onto metal using any combination of selective embossing, cutting, or perforation of the surfaces. Any image, photograph, drawing, or pattern can be translated to the metal surface using with our ZIRA™ technology.

Kauffman Stadium, designed by Populous (pictured), uses a combination of dimpled, bumped, and perforated metal surfacing to create a subtle reveal of the baseball team’s logo on its surface.

DOHA UNIVERSITY Massive aluminum plates measuring eight by twenty feet frame the Student Center Courtyard at Doha University, Qatar. The intricately cut half-inch plates were fabricated by Zahner in Kansas City to match a pattern drawn by artist Jan Hendrix.

Completed in the summer of 2010, the architectural Legoretta & Legoretta. The painted aluminum panels and substructure were shipped as units to Doha, Qatar, where local installers placed the large metal plates on both the interior and exterior frameworks.

The innovative Museum is designed by Herzog & de Meuron, who desired a pattern on the wall to match sunlight streaming through a canopy of trees. Digital images were converted into machine language and used as the basis for the entire facade.

Zahner provided Design Assist, value engineering, scheduling, fabrication, and erection of the interior facade and building envelope.

As designed by the architect, a patina has slowly formed on the copper surface, from a bright reflective red to a historic verdigris tone, pictured below and on the following page. The desired outcome is for the Museum to naturally disappear over time, becoming part of the surrounding forest at Golden Gate Park.

Natural light streams through the ceiling of the Children’s Entry at the de Young Museum in San Francisco. Perforated sheets of copper create a poetic shading enclosure. The enclosure was generated using an image provided by the design team. Zahner’s ZIRA™ technology was then used to create the architect’s desired vision, a copper canopy whose shadows appear as though cast by overhead trees.

Patinated Zinc Panels

The blue-grey surface of this material is made by growing a light patina on the surface of zinc metal.

The end result is a natural patina, resilient against the elements and resistant to the oils in our hands. The material has been used extensively on projects where the look of stone was desired, such as the Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, and the Hunter Museum of American Art (pictured left).

A rich zinc patina which provides an interior and exterior surface for refined and prestigious environments. The natural surface is similar to the Roano™ patina, but is of a different formula, and provides a durable surface with a refined tone suited for architectural interiors and art. The material is featured on the Gensler-designed Max Brenner Flagship Store (detail pictured right).

Stainless Steel

The scattered light particles created by the Angel Hair® Stainless Steel creates an ambient tonality when viewed from a distance, pictured left on the Morse Courthouse in Eugene, Oregon (pictured left). Zahner’s Angel Hair® surface is the end product of an exacting process where patented, precisioncontrolled machinery etches stainless steel with varying degrees of intensity. This is the finest, smoothest, and most uniform light-diffusion metal surface available in the world.

Dirty Penny

™

Patinated Copper

A darkened spectrum of colors, from dark purples and browns to an occasional iridescent green, Dirty Penny™ grows and weathers like an old copper coin. First used on the Hoag Rawling Library in Pueblo, Colorado (pictured left), the material is a durable surface which continues to transform and darken over time. The oxidized layer is like a living protecting barrier which grows stronger as it further oxidizes.

Unlike paint, which peels and deteriorates, Dirty Penny™ patina will age like a vintage wine, and its protective qualities grow stronger as it does.

Glass Bead

Stainless Steel

Glass Bead is a uniform surface based on the GB-60™ technology first developed by Zahner for its metal panel systems. The anti-glare surface ambiently reflects light and color without the kinds of hot spots associated with standard reflective finishes. The material has been used on a number of projects developed by Zahner, including IBM (pictured left) as well as many flagship retail stores.

Glass Bead™ stainless steel is a durable surface ideal for both exterior and interior applications.

Solanum Steel

™

Patinated Weathering Steel

A monumental expression of the metal’s deepest patina, Solanum Steel™ provides a powerful, aged look that is chemically stable — greatly reducing the tendency to stain adjacent surfaces. The material is a more durable form of weathering steel than traditional raw alloys such as A606-4 or CORTEN. Zahner’s proprietary surface has been used on projects including private homes, works of art, facades, and the landmark Spaceport America in Las Cruces, New Mexico (pictured left).

Roano Zinc

™

Patinated Zinc

Roano Zinc™ is a warm patina on zinc, with hints of olive and slate emerging from its overall earthyellow and sienna tones. The sophisticated material joins Zahner’s line of raw patinated materials, each of which ages like tanned leather or a vintage wine.

The material is similar but lighter in tone when compared to Solanum Steel and Baroque Zinc. The material is named for the project which first used its iconic color —the Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke, Virginia (pictured left).
