Katerina, Petroupoli I like this photo as it shows how small it was. And a description can be : "Sputnik 1 (Спутник means literally "traveling companion" or "satellite" in Russian) was the rst arti cial Earth satellite. Soviet Union successfully launched it, into an elliptical low Earth orbit on 4 October 1957 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, surprising the world and kicking off the space age and the Cold War space race.
