Music has long been known to have a powerful influence on human emotions, but scientific research is uncovering just how deeply it can alter our way of thinking Now you may wonder, "How does the music we listen to affect our mind?

According to a study at Johns Hopkins Medicine, the quality of sleep, mood, mental clarity, and memory can all be enhanced by listening to music while also lowering anxiety, blood pressure, and discomfort As stated by another study conducted at the University of Arizona, as music enters our brains, one of the first things that occurs is the activation of pleasure centers, which creates dopamine, a neurotransmitter that improves one’s mood

Every person that listens to music has their own preference in music genres, and every single one of them has a different effect on our brains How does the type of music we listen to affect our way of thinking? Calming music, such as jazz, soothes our minds and helps us de-stress

Another study from JHM discovered that jazz music can improve linguistic abilities, moods, memory recall, and clarity of thought

Research has suggested that listening to jazz music can improve moods and reduce stress Some listeners may find it beneficial since jazz music’s complex rhythms and harmonies can leave them feeling peaceful and relaxed Artists such as Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra are known for their jazz music

Pop music is a genre of popular music Metal or heavy metal music is known for having throaty voices, aggressive drumming, extremely low bass notes, and strongly distorted guitar riffs and chords The fast-paced rhythms and loud, aggressive instrumentation can stimulate the brain and increase heart rate and blood pressure, which can be beneficial for some listeners in certain contexts Moreover, metal music has been shown to stimulate the brain’s reward centers, resulting in sensations of pleasure and ecstasy However, critics have said that the aggressive lyrics of the songs in this genre might impact the brain in a negative way Bands in the heavy metal genre include Metallica, Black Sabbath, and Iron Maiden

It is characterized by catchy melodies, upbeat rhythms, and a focus on commercial success Most people who listen to pop music are creative, have high self-esteem, and have an outgoing personality Moreover, the impact of pop music on the brain can also depend on the context of listening For instance, listening to pop music while working out or doing something else that calls for concentration and focus might improve performance and motivation However, listening to pop music at high volumes for extended periods can lead to hearing damage and have negative effects on cognitive function This genre is often associated with artists, namely Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, and Ariana Grande

Numerous studies have shown that the music we listen to actually affects our minds The different genres of music that we hear have different impacts on our brains, both positive and negative
