Thaier Helal and the Mapping of the Symbolic

From his childhood in a small village in the Syrian countryside to his many years as a visual artist and academic in the United Arab Emirates, Thaier Helal has absorbed the world around him with an intense sense of observation. Throughout his artistic career, he has identified the symbolic nature of his surroundings, translating the essence of things into an intricate system of abstraction. Accordingly his paintings are highly cerebral, relying on aesthetic principles such as color, composition and texture to communicate the power of his hidden subjects.

Born Syria in 1967, Helal has been honored as a prominent figure of the contemporary Middle Eastern art scene with countless awards. A graduate from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Damascus, he has been a senior faculty member of the University of Sharjah, Fine Arts College, and has conducted a number of art workshops in the Gulf. His paintings have been featured in numerous group exhibitions both at home and abroad, while his solo shows at leading regional art spaces have earned him the respect of his colleagues and critics alike. Helal’s participation in several standout events at Ayyam gallery and recent auctions in the Gulf has also caught the attention of collectors.

The reason for much of his success lies at the heart of his work, namely the unique painting style that he has developed through years of experimentation. Forever in search of artistic invention, he is driven by an innate desire to defy conventional modes of representation, taking his art to uncharted territories. His mixed media canvases speak of

nuanced explorations into the functions of surface, depth and palette and the ways in which these principles can trigger profound reactions in his viewers, all while remaining true to his original subject.

“I find myself not only in a permanent stage of research while I look for new ways to express myself and develop my work,” says Helal, “but also in a self-induced solitary position, as I give myself time to reflect on the possibility and function of my work and its fundamental nature in terms of composition and meaning, expression, symbolism, origin, color etc.” This highly introspective approach to painting is reflected in the meticulous ways in which the artist applies medium, drafts his compositions, and figures forms and lines as he fashions a way of seeing that reproduces the sensations of rhythm and movement to communicate the sentiments and physicality of society and culture.

His earlier works exemplify this with a division of the canvas into a grid of equal squares. Resulting in a matrix of brushstrokes, each unit contains explosions of paint. Although principles of abstraction are visible, in which figurative representation is abandoned for a focus on color and texture, often times upon closer examination one can find traces of the point of departure that serve as the basis for each work. A 2007 untitled painting illustrates this with a large canvas that from a distance seems to be composed of small cubicles of vigorous brushwork, yet is in fact made up of images of a rooster, reappearing numerous times so that together they produce a striking lattice of symmetry. According to the artist these forms “may be elements of plant, animal, human, imaginary or abstract, which vary from panel to panel and from time to time, both in form and meaning.”

Identifying the already existing elements of abstraction in their own schools of art as they learned of Western movements such as Cubism, Constructivism and Abstract Expressionism, Arab artists possessed great aptitude for non-representational painting. Drawing from a variety of artistic influences while creating his own distinct style, Helal’s art logically builds upon the visual and theoretical components of these local and international schools.

When describing the repetition and mapping of space in his work the artist elaborates that: The pulse of these visual units, this proliferation, is composed of new relationships. New forms occur through certain rhythmic encounters that offset shapes and suggest the expressive power of the entire work of art. The repetition acts as an important aesthetic component, echoing a specific idea.

Helal’s previous works such as “Paradise Gate” (2008), “Four Seasons” (2008) and “Snow and Trees” (2008), demonstrate the precision with which he employs this artistic scheme. As shapes repeat and slight variations emerge, the possibility for multiple interpretations increases.

This is critical for Helal who confirms: My work also has an outer appearance that is manifested in terms of form and color. Its essence, its significance, is in the signs and symbols that lead you to a particular thought. With these shapes, I express different thoughts, which each viewer sees from his or her own perspective.

More than just a clever trick of the eye this reliance on repetition and the summation of parts to equal a larger (greater) entity is essential to Islamic art and architecture. It is at once meant to signify a spiritual exercise communicating the interconnectedness of humanity with nature and the sublime and a distinct aesthetic that emphasizes the semantic elements of a complex system of design.

In his latest series, he has sought to further liberate his painting style by giving into complete abstraction. Whereas previous works revolved around the distinction of spatial planes and the precise organization of the composition, and even referenced the sacred, his new paintings are noticeably freer and expressive, as he ventures into the spontaneous execution of his canvases.

In the Arab world the influence of Islamic art has acted as the foundation for abstraction in modern times, a gradual progression that occurred in visual culture when the period of courtly arts gave way to studio painting and the influence of international movements trickled down through

In some places, while they mostly appear in small clusters, a large

assemblage is rendered in the lower right hand corner. Resembling the migration patterns of birds, a synergy of movement is implied with the feral nature of the surrounding areas of the painting. In short what the artist has achieved is the perfect reconfiguring of space, time and materiality.

This deep understanding of the hidden rhythms of our everyday lives is mainly derived from the inherent temperament that the artist has located in the converging of large groups of people or things, to which he has turned to for inspiration. By collecting thousands of images from the media and taking countless photographs, he has been able to identify the physical patterns that emerge amidst these moments.

Recognizing the variations that occur depending on the circumstances of the event or gathering, he is also fascinated by the fact that these bodies also suggest the vitality of life-a kinetic rhythm that is uncontrolled and frequent and speaks of transformation or resurgence.

There is an enormous power and overwhelming presence that he has set out to capture in all its diversity. Observing the vigor of collective action or the gathering of masses as manifested in political protests and marches or religious ceremonies and festivals, Helal replicates the energy emanating from these instances through a vibrant palette and the random layering of brushstrokes.

“Fireworks” (2009) a diptych that is dominated by black, white, blue and red markings also displays this new found direction of his work.

Although there are points in which the artist has allowed paint to drip vertically down the length of the canvas, it is nearly overrun by the coarse application of a material that he has concocted himself out of sand, dust, paper and wood in addition to acrylic color. Helal explains that this “serves to create some kind of organic or spontaneous interlocking. Such a cumulative construction allows for the creation of many surfaces and varying thickness between surfaces and dimensions.”Applying several mediums to create a multidimensional feel, he seeks to draw in the viewer with the sensations of texture and various hues, as this physical and psychic weight works to trigger the subconscious.

These latest works evoke Jackson Pollack’s action paintings in their monumentality and sporadic brushwork, while alluding to the violence and destruction found in the art of Anselm Kiefer, who sought

to destabilize our views of the world. Distributed between Helal’s thin lines of paint are areas where the surface has been built up, resembling the dramatic terrain that surrounded his childhood home. Perhaps this dichotomy in representation, the freedom illustrated in the thin lines of paint versus the aggressive nature of these areas of coated medium, refers to the duality of society, the paradoxes that emerge on a daily basis as humanity teeters between progress and degeneration. The result is an approach to painting that seeks to redefine the ways in which we understand our environment. The possibilities are endless, as the artist considers, analyzes, then dismantles and reassembles his immediate reality.

Thaier HELAL

Born in Syria in 1967, distinguished artist Thaier Helal has become a significant member of the Arab and Gulf Art scene since moving to the United Arab Emirates in the 1990s. A senior faculty member of the University of Sharjah, Fine Arts College, he has participated in prominent exhibitions and events throughout the region, including the Sharjah, Alexandria and Tehran Biennials and Christie’s and Bonhams auctions.

A graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts in Damascus, Helal has emerged as a well-known figure of contemporary Syrian art with a unique approach to painting that remains at the cutting-edge of Arab visual culture. This has been confirmed by the countless honors bestowed upon him, such as the Al Burda International Award from the Emirati Ministry of Culture, Youth and Community Development (2008), the Grand Gold Award at the Tehran International Biennial (2005), the Award for Painting at the Sharjah International Biennial (1997) and the Distinguished Works Award at the 15th General Exhibition of the UAE Fine Arts Association (1996). Yet Helal’s long exhibition history is not limited to the Middle East, as he has been featured in international art fairs, biennials and exhibitions throughout Asia and Europe.

Helal’s large mixed media canvases demonstrate the evolution of an artistic style that is amidst a perpetual state of evolution. Inspired by the world around him, including the physical and psychic aspects of society and culture, his abstract paintings utilize experiments in palette, texture, and medium to draw in the viewer and to trigger the senses. Communicating movement and energy through explosions of color, the meticulous division of space and the layering of surface, his compositions are marked by a profound expressionism and spontaneity that alludes to the internal and the sublime.

Depuis son enfance dans un petit village de la campagne syrienne jusqu’à sa longue carrière d’artiste visuel et d’universitaire aux États Arabes Unis, Thaier Helal puise son inspiration dans le monde qui l’entoure en faisant preuve d’un sens aigu de l’observation. Tout au long de son parcours artistique, il a su comprendre la nature symbolique du monde qui l’entoure, transposant l’essence des choses dans un système d’abstraction complexe. C’est pourquoi ses toiles sont extrêmement cérébrales, car elles dépendent de principes esthétiques tels que la couleur, la composition, et la texture pour communiquer la puissance des thèmes qu’elles recèlent.

Né en Syrie, en 1967, Helal est reconnu comme un membre de premier plan de la scène artistique contemporaine du Moyen Orient et se voit décerner de nombreuses récompenses. Licencié de la Faculté des Beaux Arts de Damas, il a travaillé en tant qu’universitaire à l’Université de Sharjah, Collège des Beaux-Arts et dirigé un certain nombre d’ateliers d’art dans le Golfe. Ses tableaux ont été présentés lors de nombreuses expositions collectives aussi bien localement qu’à l’étranger, tandis que ses expositions en solo dans des institutions culturelles régionales majeures lui valent le respect de ses confrères aussi bien que de la critique. En participant à plusieurs événements phares à la Galerie Ayyam et par ses ventes aux enchères récentes dans la région du Golfe, Helal attire aussi l’attention des collectionneurs.

C’est au cœur de son œuvre qu’il faut chercher les clefs de son succès, c’est-à-dire dans le style pictural très personnel qu’il a su développer au fil d’années de recherches. Il est toujours en quête d’invention artistique, et un désir inné de rompre avec les processus de

représentation conventionnels mène son art vers des territoires encore vierges. Ses toiles en technique mixte témoignent d’explorations tout en nuances de la fonction de la surface, de la profondeur et de l’utilisation de la palette et des façons dont ces principes peuvent susciter de profondes réactions chez le spectateur, tout en demeurant fidèles à leur thème d’origine.

«Je suis perpétuellement en recherche car j’essaie de trouver de nouvelles façons de m’exprimer et d’améliorer mon œuvre» dit Helal, «mais je suis aussi dans un état solitaire que j’ai moi-même créé, car je prends le temps de réfléchir sur les possibilités et fonctions de mon œuvre et sa nature de base en ce qui concerne la composition, le sens, l’expression, le symbolisme, l’origine, la couleur etc.» Cette approche très introspective de la peinture se reflète dans la façon minutieuse dont il applique le pigment, prépare ses compositions, et dessine des formes et des lignes tout en élaborant une manière de voir qui reproduit les sensations de rythme et de mouvement qui communiquent les sentiments et le côté physique de la société et de la culture.

Ses premières œuvres sont un bon exemple de ce phénomène; la toile est quadrillée de carrés de la même taille. Chaque section délimite des explosions de peinture, produisant un nœud de coups de pinceau. Bien que l’on puisse y détecter les principes de base de l’abstraction, car elles abandonnent la représentation figurative au profit d’une focalisation sur la couleur et la texture, le plus souvent, en les examinant de plus près, on peut y déceler des traces du point de départ de chaque œuvre. Un tableau sans titre de 2007 est un bon exemple de ce phénomène: c’est une grande toile qui de loin semble être faite de petites cases formées de traits de pinceau vigoureux, alors qu’il s’agit en fait d’images de coq, qui réapparaissent tant de fois qu’ensemble elles produisent un treillis symétrique dont l’effet est saisissant. Selon l’artiste, de telles formes «peuvent être des morceaux de plantes, d’animaux ou d’êtres humains, ou bien même d’êtres imaginaires ou abstraits, qui varient d’un panneau à l’autre et d’un moment à l’autre, au niveau de la forme aussi bien que du sens.»

Ce recours à la répétition et à l’addition des parties afin de constituer un tout plus grand (et plus important) n’est pas seulement une question d’illusion d’optique habile; c’est aussi une composante essentielle de l’art et de l’architecture islamiques. Elles servent à signifier à la fois un

exercice spirituel évoquant les rapports réciproques de l’homme, de la nature et du sublime, et une esthétique particulière qui met l’accent sur les éléments signifiants d’un système complexe de motifs.

Dans le monde arabe, à l’époque moderne, l’influence de l’art islamique a servi de base à l’abstraction, par une progression graduelle qui a eu lieu dans la culture visuelle lorsque la période des arts de la cour a cédé le pas à la peinture d’atelier et que l’influence de mouvements artistiques internationaux s’est infiltrée par le biais du colonialisme. En identifiant les éléments d’abstraction déjà présents dans leurs propres écoles artistiques alors qu’ils devenaient familiers de mouvements artistiques occidentaux tels que le Cubisme, le Constructivisme et l’Expressionnisme Abstrait, les artistes arabes se découvrent alors une grande aptitude pour la peinture non figurative. En s’inspirant d’influences artistiques variées pour se façonner son propre style, il est logique qu’Helal développé son art autour des bases visuelles et théoriques de ces mouvements locaux et internationaux.

Lorsqu’il décrit la répétition et la topographie de l’espace dans son œuvre, Helal explique que : La pulsation de ces unités visuelles et leur prolifération est formée de rapports nouveaux. De nouvelles configurations surgissent lors de certaines rencontres rythmiques qui font ressortir les formes et suggèrent la puissance expressive de l’œuvre d’art dans son entier.

La répétition sert de composante esthétique importante, car elle est l’écho d’une idée particulière.

Les œuvres précédentes d’Helal, telles que «La Porte du Paradis» (2008), «Quatre Saisons» (2008) et «Neige et Arbres» (2008) témoignent de la précision avec laquelle il utilise ce processus artistique. Tandis que des formes se répètent et que de légères variations se font sentir, s’accroît la possibilité d’interprétations multiples. C’est un point extrêmement important pour Helal qui l’exprime ainsi : L’apparence extérieure de mon œuvre se manifeste en termes de forme et de couleurs. Son essence, sa signification profonde, se trouvent dans les signes et les symboles qui vous mènent à des pensées particulières.

Par ces configurations, j’exprime des idées différentes que chaque spectateur interprète alors selon sa propre perspective.

Dans sa dernière série, il cherche à libérer un peu plus son style pictural en s’adonnant totalement à l’abstraction. Alors que ses œuvres précédentes s’axaient autour de plans spatiaux distincts et de la disposition précise des éléments de la composition, et faisaient même référence au sacré, ses toiles les plus récentes sont infiniment plus libres et expressives, tandis qu’il s’exerce à exécuter ses toiles de façon spontanée.

Par exemple, une œuvre sans titre de 2009 est peinte dans des tons de rouge, blanc, vert et noir. Parmi les coups de pinceau dynamiques se trouvent des triangles peints approximativement qui sont éparpillés sur toute la composition. Alors qu’ils apparaissent principalement en petits groupes, leur densité s’intensifie dans le coin en bas à droite.

Ceci rappelle les regroupements migratoires d’oiseaux, une synergie de mouvement qui est suggérée par le côté brut des pans qui entourent cette partie du tableau. En bref, la réussite de l’artiste, c’est d’avoir parfaitement représenté l’espace, le temps et la matérialité.

Ce sens profond des rythmes cachés de nos vies quotidiennes trouve surtout son origine dans la nature même des rassemblements de grands groupes de personnes ou d’objets, tels que l’artiste les perçoit et vers lesquels il se tourne comme source d’inspiration. Il a une collection de milliers d’images prises dans les médias et prend nombre de photographies, ce qui lui permet d’identifier les structures qui émergent de ces moments. Parce qu’il reconnait les variations qui peuvent se produire selon les circonstances de l’événement ou du rassemblement, il s’intéresse aussi au fait que ces corps suggèrent également la vitalité de la vie – un rythme cinétique qui échappe au contrôle, est fréquent et suggère la transformation ou la renaissance.

Il s’agit d’une puissance énorme et d’une présence écrasante qu’il s’efforce de rendre dans toute sa diversité. En observant la vigueur de l’action collective ou du rassemblement des foules telle qu’elle s’exprime lors de manifestations ou soulèvements politiques ou de cérémonies religieuses et festivals, Helal reproduit l’énergie qui émane de ces événements par l’utilisation d’une gamme de couleurs vives et l’application en couches irrégulières du pigment.

Un diptyque «Feu d’Artifice» (2009) dans lequel des traces de noir, blanc, bleu et rouge prédominent est aussi un bon exemple de cette nouvelle tendance de son œuvre. Bien qu’à certains endroits l’artiste

ait laissé des coulures de peinture verticales le long de la toile, celle-ci est pratiquement envahie par l’application grossière d’une substance concoctée par l’artiste lui-même à partir de sable, de poussière, de papier et de bois ajoutés à de la peinture acrylique. Helal explique que ceci «sert à fabriquer une sorte de lien organique et spontané.

Une construction cumulative à ce point permet la création d’une multiplicité de plans et de plusieurs épaisseurs de surfaces et de volumes.» Appliquant plusieurs matériaux pour créer une impression de volumes multiples, il attire l’œil par les sensations de texture et les variations de tons, tandis que ce poids physique et psychique agit comme un révélateur pour l’inconscient.

Ces œuvres les plus récentes évoquent «l’action painting» de Jackson Pollock par leur taille monumentale et coups de pinceau sporadiques, tout en faisant allusion à la violence et à la destruction omniprésentes dans les œuvres d’Anselm Kiefer, qui cherchait à déstabiliser notre vision du monde. Entre les fins traits de peinture de Helal se trouvent des zones où la surface a été modelée, ressemblant au terrain accidenté qui entourait sa maison d’enfance. Peut-être cette dichotomie de la représentation, cette liberté qui apparaît dans les traits fins qui contrastent avec l’agressivité des zones de matière épaisse font-elles référence à la dualité de la société, aux paradoxes qui émergent chaque jour tandis que l’humanité se fraye un passage entre le progrès et la régression. Il en résulte une approche picturale qui cherche à redéfinir la façon dont nous comprenons notre environnement. Les possibilités sont immenses, tandis que l’artiste considère, analyse, puis déconstruit et assemble de nouveau la réalité qui l’entoure.

Licencié de la Faculté des Beaux Arts de Damas, Helal est vite reconnu comme un artiste de premier plan sur la scène artistique syrienne grâce à son approche très personnelle de la peinture, qui s’inscrit à la pointe de la culture visuelle arabe. Les multiples récompenses qu’il reçoit le confirment, telles que le prix international Al Burda décerné par le Ministère émirati de la Culture et du Développement Social (2008), le Grand Prix D’Or de la Biennale Internationale de Téhéran (2005), le Prix de Peinture à la Biennale Internationale de Sharjah (1997) et une mention spéciale (Distinguished Works Award) lors de la XVème Exposition de la Société des Beaux Arts des Emirats Arabes Unis (1996). La longue liste d’expositions de Helal ne se résume toutefois pas au Moyen Orient, car ses œuvres ont aussi été présentées lors de foires d’art, biennales, et expositions internationales à travers l’Europe et l’Asie.

Les grandes toiles en technique mixte de Helal témoignent du développement d’un style artistique qui évolue en permanence.

S’inspirant du monde autour de lui, particulièrement des aspects physiques et psychiques de la société et de la culture qui l’entourent, ses tableaux abstraits jouent sur les gammes de couleur, les texture et les pigments afin de capter l’attention du spectateur et de stimuler les sens. Il communique le mouvement et l’énergie par des explosions de couleur, la division méticuleuse de l’espace et des surfaces superposées, dans des toiles que caractérisent une spontanéité et un expressionnisme profonds qui évoquent à la fois l’intériorité et le sublime.

‫ثائــــر هــــالل‬ ‫ولد الفنان املتميز ثائر هالل يف �سوريا عام ‪ .1967‬وقد �أ�صبح ا�سم ًا مهم ًا على‬ ‫ال�ساحة الفنية العربية واخلليجية منذ انتقاله �إىل الإمارات العربية املتحدة يف‬ ‫الت�سعينيات‪.‬‬ ‫بف�ضل �سريته الذاتية احلافلة باالجنازات و �أثره االيجابي الفعال على احلركة‬ ‫الثقافية وحياته العملية كفنان وحما�ضر يف كلية الفنون اجلميلة يف جامعة‬ ‫ال�شارقة‪ ،‬ر�سخ نف�سه ك�شخ�صية متميزة على ال�ساحة الفنية العربية‪ ،‬ناهيك عن‬ ‫م�شاركته يف العديد من املعار�ض البارزة والأحداث يف املنطقة‪ ،‬كبينايل ال�شارقة‬ ‫والإ�سكندرية وطهران‪ ،‬ومزادات كري�ستيز وبونهامز‪.‬‬ ‫تخرج هالل من كلية الفنون اجلميلة يف دم�شق‪ ،‬وا�شتهر كقدوة وممثل معروف‬ ‫للفن الت�شكيلي ال�سوري املعا�صر‪ ،‬مع تفرده بلم�سة فنية الذعة �أ�ضافها �إىل الثقافة‬ ‫الب�صرية العربية‪ .‬تلقى عدد ًا من اجلوائز برهان ًا على هذا‪ ،‬نذكر منها «جائزة‬ ‫الربدة الدولية» من وزارة الثقافة يف الإمارات ‪ ،2008‬اجلائزة الذهبية الكربى يف‬ ‫بينايل طهران الدويل ‪ ،2005‬جائزة الت�صوير يف بينايل ال�شارقة الدويل ‪1997‬‬ ‫وجائزة الأعمال املميزة يف املعر�ض اخلام�س ع�شر جلمعية الإمارات للفنون‬ ‫الت�شكيلية ‪ .1996‬مل تقت�صر معار�ض هالل على منطقة ال�شرق الأو�سط‪ ،‬فقد برز‬ ‫يف معار�ض فنية دولية و�أحداث عديدة حول �آ�سيا و�أوروبا‪.‬‬ ‫لوحات هالل ذات الو�سائط املتعددة تدل على تطور م�ستمر يف �أ�سلوبه الفني‪.‬‬ ‫م�ستوحاة من العامل ومن حميطه‪ ،‬ومن املظاهر النف�سية واملادية يف املجتمع‬ ‫والثقافة‪ ،‬ف�إن �أ�سلوبه املتميز يف لوحاته التجريدية وجتاربه يف الألوان واملواد‬ ‫على القما�ش بالأحجام الكبرية‪ ،‬جتذب الناظر وحتفز احلوا�س‪� .‬إذ تت�سم �أعماله‬ ‫مب�سحة تعبريية عميقة وعفوية تلمح �إىل الباطن وال�سامي والالنهائي‪ ،‬فاحلركة‬ ‫والطاقة مرتبطتان ومتولدتان من الإيقاع املتكرر‪ ،‬ومن انفجارات اللون‪ ،‬ومن‬ ‫االنق�سام املو�سو�س للف�ضاء على �سطح متعدد الطبقات‪.‬‬

‫على اللوحة‪ ،‬وفيما تبدو غالب ًا على هيئة جتمعات �صغرية يف بع�ض الأماكن جند‬ ‫جمموعة كبرية يف الزاوية اليمنى ال�سفلية‪ .‬يتم الإيحاء بت�ضافر جهود احلركة‬ ‫ال�شبيهة ب�أمناط هجرة الطيور‪ ،‬مع الطابع الربي للم�ساحات املحيطة باللوحة‪.‬‬ ‫وباخت�صار‪ ،‬ما حققه الفنان هو �إعادة ت�شكيل ممتاز للمكان والزمان واملادة‪.‬‬ ‫هذا اال�ستيعاب العميق للإيقاعات اخلفية يف حياتنا اليومية‪ ،‬م�شتق يف معظمه‬ ‫من املزاجية الفطرية التي وجدها الفنان يف التجمعات الكبرية للب�شر �أو الأ�شياء‪،‬‬ ‫والتي جل�أ �إليها كم�صدر �إلهام له‪ .‬لقد متكن من التعرف على الأمناط املادية التي‬ ‫تن�ش�أ يف خ�ضم هذه اللحظات وذلك عرب جمع �آالف ال�صور من و�سائل الإعالم‬ ‫والتقاط عدد ال يح�صى من ال�صور الفوتوغرافية‪ .‬مدرك ًا االختالفات التي تطر�أ‬ ‫وفق ًا لظروف احلدث �أو التجمع‪ ،‬يفتنه واقع �أن هذه الأج�سام توحي �أي�ض ًا بحيوية‬ ‫احلياة– �إيقاع حركي يتكرر‪ ،‬ال ميكن ال�سيطرة عليه ويعك�س التحول �أو التجدد‪ .‬له‬ ‫قوة هائلة وح�ضور طاغ يعتزم الفنان التقاطه بكل تنوعه‪� .‬أثناء مراقبته لقوة احلركة‬ ‫اجلماعية وجتمعات احل�شود املتظاهرة يف االحتجاجات ال�سيا�سية وامل�سريات �أو يف‬ ‫االحتفاالت الدينية واملهرجانات‪ ،‬ي�ستن�سخ هالل الطاقة املنبثقة من هذه احلاالت‬ ‫من خالل لوحة ناب�ضة باحلياة وتوزيع �ضربات الفر�شاة على طبقات ع�شوائية‪.‬‬ ‫يف لوحة مزدوجة «�ألعاب نارية» �أجنزها عام ‪ 2009‬يطغى عليها الأ�سود والأبي�ض‬ ‫وعالمات زرقاء وحمراء‪ ،‬يعر�ض هالل هذا التوجه اجلديد لعمله‪ .‬ورغم �أنه �سمح‬ ‫يف بع�ض املراحل لقطرات الطالء بالتنقيط ب�شكل عمودي على طول اللوحة‪� ،‬إال‬ ‫�أنها تبدو �شبه مغمورة مبادة خ�شنة �صنعها من الرمل والغبار والورق واخل�شب‬ ‫بالإ�ضافة �إىل �ألوان الأكريليك‪ .‬يو�ضح هالل �أن هذا «يعمل على خلق نوع من‬ ‫الت�شابك العفوي �أو الع�ضوي»‪ .‬هذا البناء الرتاكمي ي�سمح ب�إن�شاء العديد من‬ ‫الأ�سطح وتفاوت ال�سماكة بني امل�سطحات والأبعاد‪ .‬وعرب ا�ستخدام و�سائط متعددة‬ ‫لإ�ضفاء طابع متعدد الأبعاد‪ ،‬ي�سعى جلذب امل�شاهد ب�إح�سا�سات القما�ش والألوان‬ ‫العديدة‪ ،‬فيما يعمل هذا الثقل اجل�سدي والنف�سي على خماطبة العقل الباطن‪.‬‬

‫تذكر �أعماله الأخرية بلوحات «جاك�سون بوالك» املثرية يف �ضخامتها و�ضربات‬ ‫فر�شاته املتفرقة‪ ،‬بينما تلمح �إىل العنف والدمار املوجود يف فن «�أن�سلم كيفر»‬ ‫الذي �سعى �إىل هز ا�ستقرار نظرتنا �إىل العامل‪ .‬تتوزع بني خطوط «هالل» الرفيعة‬ ‫م�ساحات ترتفع فيها الأ�سطح‪ ،‬ت�شبه احلقل املثري الذي كان يحيط مبنزله يف‬ ‫طفولته‪ .‬لعل هذا االنق�سام يف التقدمي‪ ،‬احلرية املمثلة يف خطوط الطالء الرفيعة‬ ‫يف مواجهة الطبيعة العدوانية املمثلة يف هذه امل�ساحات ذات الو�سائط املغلقة‪،‬‬ ‫لعله ي�شري �إىل ازدواجية املجتمع‪� ،‬إذ تن�ش�أ تناق�ضات جديدة يومي ًا يف حني تت�أرجح‬ ‫الب�شرية بني التقدم واالنحطاط‪ .‬الناجت هو نهج فني ي�سعى لإعادة حتديد الو�سائل‬ ‫التي نفهم من خاللها حميطنا‪ .‬ال تنفد االحتماالت‪ ،‬ف�إن الفنان يرى ويحلل ثم‬ ‫يفكك ويعيد جتميع واقعه الآين‪.‬‬

‫تتحدث لوحاته املتعددة الو�سائط عن ا�ستك�شافات جديدة يف وظائف ال�سطح‬ ‫والعمق والألوان وال�سبل حيث ميكن لهذه املبادئ �أن ت�ؤدي �إىل ردود �أفعال عميقة‬ ‫لدى امل�شاهدين‪ ،‬مع االحتفاظ بوفائه للمو�ضوع الأ�صلي‪.‬‬ ‫يقول هالل‪« :‬بينما �أنقب عن و�سائل جديدة للتعبري عن نف�سي وتطوير عملي �أجد‬ ‫نف�سي لي�س فقط يف مرحلة بحث متوا�صل‪ ،‬ولكن �أي�ض ًا يف موقع انفرادي �إرادي‪� ،‬إذ‬ ‫�إنني �أ�سرت�سل يف التفكري يف احتماالت ووظائف عملي وطبيعته اجلوهرية من حيث‬ ‫الرتكيب واملعنى والتعبري والرمزية والأ�صل �إلخ‪ .»...‬يتجلى هذا النهج اال�ستقرائي‬ ‫�إىل حد بعيد يف الأ�ساليب الدقيقة التي يطبق من خاللها الفنان الو�سائط‪ ،‬وير�سم‬ ‫تركيباته‪ ،‬وي�صور الأ�شكال واخلطوط فيما يخلق �أ�سلوب ًا للر�ؤية ينتج �أحا�سي�س‬ ‫الإيقاع واحلركة للو�صل بني امل�شاعر ومادية املجتمع والثقافة‪.‬‬ ‫�أعماله ال�سابقة خري مثال على هذا‪� ،‬إذ تق�سم اللوحة �إىل �شبكة مت�ساوية املربعات‬ ‫تنتهي على هيئة م�صفوفة من �ضربات الفر�شاة‪ ،‬وكل وحدة فيها حتوي انفجارات‬ ‫من الطالء‪ .‬رغم �أن مبادئ التجريد وا�ضحة‪� ،‬إذ �إن التمثيل الرمزي مهمل على‬ ‫ح�ساب الرتكيز على اللون والقما�ش‪� ،‬إال �أنه بعد التفح�ص الدقيق ميكن للمرء‬ ‫اقتفاء �أثر نقطة االنطالق التي تخدم ك�أ�سا�س لكل واحد من �أعماله‪ .‬ينعك�س هذا‬ ‫يف لوحة بدون عنوان �أجنزها عام ‪ ،2007‬لوحة كبرية تبدو عن بعد وك�أنها م�ؤلفة‬ ‫من �أق�سام �صغرية يف داخلها �ضربات فر�شاة ن�شيطة‪ ،‬ولكنها تتكون يف الواقع من‬ ‫لديك‪ ،‬يتكرر ظهورها مرات عديدة لت�شكل مع ًا تناظر ًا مذه ًال‪ .‬بالن�سبة‬ ‫�صور ٍ‬ ‫للفنان «هذه الأ�شكال قد تكون عنا�صر نبات‪ ،‬حيوان‪� ،‬إن�سان‪ ،‬خيالية �أو جتريدية‬ ‫تختلف بني لوحة و�أخرى ومن وقت لآخر‪ ،‬يف ال�شكل واملعنى على حد �سواء»‪.‬‬ ‫هذا االعتماد على التكرار وجمع الأجزاء لتعادل كيان ًا �أكرب‪ ،‬لي�س جمرد حيلة ذكية‬ ‫للب�صر‪ ،‬بل �إنه �أ�سا�سي يف الفن والعمارة الإ�سالمية‪ .‬والهدف من هذا هو الداللة‬ ‫على ممار�سة روحية حتقق ترابط الب�شرية مع الطبيعة والقيم العليا‪ ،‬وبني جمالية‬ ‫مميزة تدعم العنا�صر الداللية ملنظومة ت�صميم معقدة‪.‬‬

‫يف العامل العربي‪ ،‬يعد ت�أثري الفن الإ�سالمي �أ�سا�س ًا للتجريدية يف الع�صر احلديث‪،‬‬ ‫حيث ظهر يف الثقافة الب�صرية كتطور تدريجي يف الفرتة التي �أف�سحت فيها الفنون‬ ‫التقليدية املجال لر�سم اال�ستوديوهات‪ ،‬وو�صلنا فيها ت�أثري احلركات الدولية عرب‬ ‫اال�ستعمار‪ .‬ومتكن الفنانون العرب من �إنتاج لوحات غري ت�شخي�صية بجدارة كبرية‪،‬‬ ‫معرفني مبادئ التجريد املوجودة �أ�ص ًال يف مدار�سهم فيما تع ّلموا من احلركات‬ ‫الغربية مثل التكعيبية والبنائية والتعبريية التجريدية‪.‬‬ ‫معتمد ًا على ت�أثريات فنية متنوعة ومبتكر ًا �أ�سلوبه اخلا�ص واملميز‪ ،‬يقوم فن هالل‬ ‫على املكونات الب�صرية والنظرية لهذه املدار�س املحلية والعاملية‪ .‬ويف و�صفه للتكرار‬ ‫وتكوين الف�ضاء يف عمله ي�سهب الفنان قائ ًال‪�« :‬إن نب�ض هذه الوحدات الب�صرية‬ ‫وهذا االنت�شار يتكون من عالقات جديدة‪ ،‬تظهر ا�شكال حديثة من خالل تقاطعات‬ ‫�إيقاعية معينة‪ ،‬توازن الأ�شكال وتوحي بالقوة التعبريية للعمل الفني ب�أكمله‪ .‬وميثل‬ ‫التكرار مكون ًا جمالي ًا مهم ًا يردد �صدى فكرة حمددة»‪.‬‬ ‫�أعمال هالل ال�سابقة مثل «باب اجلنة»‪ ،‬و»الف�صول الأربعة» و»الثلج والأ�شجار»‬ ‫تربهن على الدقة التي ي�ستخدمها يف منهجه الفني‪ .‬وفيما تتكرر الأ�شكال وتطر�أ‬ ‫اختالفات طفيفة‪ ،‬يرتفع احتمال �إيجاد تف�سريات متعددة‪ .‬هذا �أمر حا�سم بالن�سبة‬ ‫لهالل الذي ي�ؤكد‪« :‬عملي له مظهر خارجي �أي�ض ًا‪� ،‬أعرب عنه بوا�سطة ال�شكل واللون‪.‬‬ ‫يكمن جوهره ومغزاه يف الإ�شارات والرموز التي تقودك �إىل فكرة معينة‪ .‬بهذه‬ ‫الأ�شكال �أعرب عن �أفكار خمتلفة يراها كل م�شاهد من منظاره �أو منظارها اخلا�ص»‪.‬‬ ‫�سعى يف جمموعته الأخرية �إىل حترير �أ�سلوبه الفني �أكرث‪ ،‬عرب االجنراف يف‬ ‫التجريد الكامل‪ .‬حيث �إن �أعماله ال�سابقة متحورت حول متييز امل�ساحات امل�سطحة‬ ‫والتنظيم الدقيق للتكوين واعتمدت على مرجع قد�سي‪ ،‬لوحاته اجلديدة متحررة‬ ‫و�أكرث تعبريية ب�شكل ملحوظ �إذ يغامر بتنفيذ لوحاته بعفوية‪ .‬لن�أخذ على �سبيل املثال‬ ‫لوحة بدون عنوان �أجنزها عام ‪ 2009‬باللون الأحمر والأبي�ض والأخ�ضر وبدرجات‬ ‫اللون الأ�سود‪ .‬و�سط �ضربات فر�شاة ديناميكية تتوزع املثلثات بحرية يف كل مكان‬

‫منذ طفولته يف قرية �صغرية يف الريف ال�سوري �إىل �سنواته العديدة كفنان ب�صري‬ ‫و�أكادميي يف الإمارات العربية املتحدة‪ ،‬ا�ستوعب ثائر هالل العامل من حوله ب�شعور‬ ‫عميق املالحظة‪ .‬طوال م�شواره الفني حدد الطابع الرمزي ملا يحيط به‪ ،‬مرتجم ًا‬ ‫جوهر الأمور �إىل نظام جتريدي معقد‪ .‬تعمل لوحاته كالدماغ �إذ تعتمد على املبادئ‬ ‫اجلمالية مثل اللون والتكوين والقما�ش لتو�صيل قوة موا�ضيعه املخفية‪.‬‬ ‫ولد هالل يف �سوريا عام ‪ .1967‬مت تكرميه بعدد ال يح�صى من اجلوائز ك�شخ�صية‬ ‫بارزة يف امل�شهد الفني ال�شرق �أو�سطي‪ .‬تخرج يف كلية الفنون اجلميلة يف دم�شق‪،‬‬ ‫و�أ�صبح ع�ضو ًا يف هيئة التدري�س يف جامعة ال�شارقة‪ ،‬كلية الفنون اجلميلة وقاد عدد ًا‬ ‫من ور�شات العمل الفنية يف اخلليج‪ .‬عر�ضت لوحاته يف معار�ض جماعية عديدة يف‬ ‫الداخل و اخلارج‪ ،‬يف حني اكت�سب احرتام زمالئه والنقاد على حد �سواء‪ ،‬بف�ضل‬ ‫معار�ض فردية �أقامها يف �صاالت فنية �إقليمية رائدة‪ .‬كما �أن م�شاركته يف �أحداث‬ ‫المعة نظمتها «�أيام غالريي» ومزادات حديثة يف اخلليج لفتت انتباه هواة جمع‬ ‫الأعمال الفنية‪.‬‬ ‫يكمن �سر جناحه يف �صميم عمله‪ ،‬وبالتحديد يف �أ�سلوب ر�سمه الفريد الذي طوره‬ ‫على مر �سنني من التجارب‪ .‬خالل رحلة بحثه الأزيل عن االبتكار الفني‪ ،‬تقوده‬ ‫أرا�ض جمهولة‪.‬‬ ‫رغبة فطرية يف حتدي �أمناط التقدمي التقليدية حاملة فنه �إىل � ٍ‬
