AGS Welcome FROM THE HEADMASTER

Welcome to the latest edition of Flourish, our termly newsletter celebrating the vibrant life of our School community.

This term has been a whirlwind of activity, showcasing the remarkable talents and dedication of our students and staff From the energetic House Music competition, to national finals in squash, and the victorious debating teams at the House of Lords, it has been a term filled with impressive achievements.

The House Music competition was a standout event, with students displaying incredible musical talent, innovation, and collaboration in front of a sold out audience at the Waterside Theatre It was a celebration of the sense of belonging and camaraderie that defines our School community Equally, in sports, our basketball players, swimming teams, and footballers, delivered some outstanding performances in their respective House Events.

Many students have also had the opportunity to travel far and wide, participating in international visits and exchanges They have explored the cultural and historical sights of Madrid, skied in Sestriere, and enjoyed various day visits designed to broaden their learning beyond the classroom These experiences shape young minds, helping them gain a deeper understanding of the world around them.

A fitting end to this term was the Pitch In Challenge, where all of our students came together to raise over £111,000 in support of the new all-weather sports pitch This is a perfect example of the strength of the AGS community, with every student participating and contributing to this incredible fundraising result We are so proud of everyone’s efforts in making this a huge success and I am delighted to share that we will be able to break ground this summer, a year ahead of schedule.

In addition to these events, the achievements of our Debating team, Chess team, Maths Challenge, and Squash team are particular highlights These accomplishments are a testament to the range and variety of activities our students engage in, and we are immensely proud of how they continue to strive for excellence.

We are also grateful for the unwavering support from our Old Aylesburians and the wider School community, whose involvement in our clubs, societies and the Inspirational Speakers Programme continues to enrich School life at AGS

FLOURISH IN ALL YOU DO

The Spring term has seen the Brodie and Watson continue to be fierce but friendly competition. Well done to all the students who got involved this term. Your Heads of House are incredibly grateful and proud of your support and wish you all a very restful Easter break.

The Brodie continued this term with House Basketball, where Hampden emerged victorious. Then came House Swimming, always an exciting event - Paterson won, with records set by Dewi (H7), Dan (Ph13), Finley (Pa7), Jake (L12) and Lee House in the Senior Medley Relay The final event of the term was House Football, with Paterson taking the overall win. A massive thank you to Mr. Duggan and the entire PE team for organizing the events this term.

The Watson continued with House Music - over 500 students took part, and we were delighted to be joined by OA Ben Treacher (Lee ‘09) as a guest adjudicator. Denson emerged as overall winners. We also had Inter House Quiz, in which Ridley were 1st in Year 10 and Lee in Year 11 These will be added to the Junior Quiz in the Summer. Houses have also submitted their House Writing magazines, based on the theme of 'Refuge'results will be announced after Easter, and all magazines are viewable on the School website

Currently, Lee are top of the Brodie and Hampden and Phillips top of the Watson, but anything can change into the Summer...

NURTURE YOUR CHARACTER

The House Music competition at the Waterside Theatre was a resounding success, with a sold-out audience enjoying an evening filled with incredible talent, energy, and musical enthusiasm We were delighted to welcome Ben Treacher (Lee ‘09) as our special guest judge, alongside our expert panel of Mark Sturgeon, Headmaster, and Craig Nathan, Director of Music.

One of the most special aspects of House Music is the sense of belonging and camaraderie on display. It’s truly something unique to witness hundreds of students, from the youngest to the oldest, coming together to work as a team to put on a fantastic show The performances were a powerful testament to the over 510 students who took part, showcasing the strength of community and collaboration at AGS.

The competition was fierce, with each House showcasing their musical skills in a variety of performances. After a night of impressive displays, we are thrilled to announce that Denson emerged as the winners! Their display of talent and teamwork was outstanding, and they thoroughly deserved their victory.

House Music is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated events of the school year, and this year’s competition did not disappoint. A massive congratulations to all the participants for their hard work and dedication, and thank you to everyone who made the evening such a memorable occasion. We can’t wait to see what next year’s competition has in store!

AGS Sport

NURTURE YOUR CHARACTER

Football

Our teams have had an action-packed term. The 1st XI secured a dramatic 7-5 victory, while the Under 13 team dominated with a 5-0 win. The Under 12 team had a strong win against Shiplake College, and the Under 16s triumphed in a hard-fought 2-1 match against Mandeville School

Cross-Country

Our runners had a strong performance at the Bucks Schools Championships, with Edward Johnson finishing 1st and Luca Dolan 2nd in their races Dewi Fordyce, Charlie Robinson, Finlay Garman, and Zach Cleary also ran well, a successful day for the team. Edward and Luca were also selected to represent Bucks in the regional comp.

Rugby

Several players represented prestigious clubs this term, including Sean Dover and Ben Giles for Ealing Trailfinders U18s, while Isaac Mills, Conor Heatley, Joe Gormally, and Dilan Baraukas joined Northampton Saints U17 Academy

Rugby 7s

The U13 Rugby 7s team put in a strong performance at both the Northampton Saints Bucks tournament and the John Hampden 7s, finishing 2nd in a close final. Tries were scored by key players like Fionn Morgan, Max Smith, and Freddie Lazaruk, who demonstrated great teamwork throughout the day.

Badminton

A successful term, with the U14 and U16 teams winning the County Championship in the National Schools competition. The U13 and U15 teams also recorded impressive wins in the District League, showing great promise for the future

Basketball

Impressive wins came from the U12 and U18 teams against top schools, with the Under 16 team securing a thrilling overtime victory and the Under 14s battling hard in a close match

Swimming

The U12 team led the way at Haberdashers, with Dewi Fordyce and Charlie Robinson standing out in individual events, and both relay teams finishing in 1st place At the QE Barnet comp, the Senior team triumphed, while the Junior and Intermediate teams also performed well. The Y7 team had success at their event.

Handball

The AGS team won the County Round of the England Handball National Schools Competition, and Jayden Mugonpanja continues to excel, having attended the ‘Futures Camp’ in Portugal and been invited to the U18 GB Camp.

News

We are proud to announce that AGS Sport has been named one of the ‘Top 200 Sporting Schools of 2024’ in the National School Sports Magazine. Congratulations to Old Aylesburian Oscar Wellbelove for his outstanding performance with the England U20 Handball team, securing 2nd place in the IHF Continental Phase. Additionally, our Year 6 Futsal tournament was a great success, thanks to the hard work of Mr. Roberts and our Y12 Sports leaders.

Squash

Our Squash teams have had a historic season, with all three age groups qualifying for the England Squash National Finals. The Senior team defeated Stowe School, while the Key Stage 4 and 5 teams secured their places by overcoming tough competition. The KS3 team made history by finishing 5th at the finals, with KS4 and 5 teams also finishing strong Mr Withey’s dedication to coaching has been a key factor in their success.

Padel

The U15A team reached the Semi-Final stage of the UK Padel Schools Championships, while the U15B team made it to the Quarter-Final, showcasing strong performances throughout.

EMBRACE OPPORTUNITY

Year 12 Historians attended the Empire Enquiry Day at the Royal Maritime Museum at Greenwich, where they explored fascinating historical questions and handled objects from the museum’s archives Thank you to all the staff involved.

95 AGS students from Years 7-13 had the exciting opportunity to stand on the pitch at Leicester Tigers, waving flags as the players walked out for the game. The fun continued during half-time, when 10 AGS teachers took on a challenge to catch balls fired into the air Thanks to some epic teamwork, they emerged victorious!

What a fantastic day our Year 8 students had in Bath! Forty students took part in workshops and a guided tour of the Roman Baths, exploring life in ancient Rome After soaking up the history, they enjoyed ice cream, fudge, and a visit to the famous Toppings bookshop the perfect way to end the day!

Year 11 GCSE Geology students recently visited Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door in Dorset for an exciting field trip. During their visit, they explored the stunning coastal landscape, studying key geological features such as the famous limestone arches, faults, and rock formations The students were able to observe the processes of coastal erosion and sedimentary rock layering first hand, deepening their understanding of the geological concepts covered in their studies.

On March 20th, 2025, our Senior Musicians (Grade 7+) performed at Exeter College, Oxford, in an unforgettable evening of music. The event featured a beautiful organ recital by Mr Nathan, a concert in the College Chapel, and a jazz performance in the Undercroft Bar, celebrating both classical and jazz talents. The event also inspired students to aim for top universities and included an Old Aylesburian currently studying at Exeter, along with other alumni. A big thank you to Mr. Nathan for organizing this fantastic experience!

EMBRACE OPPORTUNITY

44 Year 10 and 12 students enjoyed an unforgettable cultural trip to Madrid, designed to enhance their Spanish learning. They explored stunning art and architecture, savoured churros con chocolate, and immersed themselves in Spanish culture while improving their language skills A big thank you to all the staff who helped make this trip such a memorable experience for our Spanish students!

The Ski Trip to Sestriere for Year 9 and 12 students was a huge success, with everyone enjoying their time on the slopes! From thrilling runs to lots of laughs, the trip was full of unforgettable moments. A big thank you to everyone involved.

This term has been an exceptional one for AGS debaters, with impressive achievements across multiple prestigious competitions.

A highlight was the Debating Matters Final at the House of Lords, where ten students had the opportunity to tour Parliament before competing in high-level debates. Manas received a special commendation for his contributions, and the AGS team won the Debating Matters House of Lords Championship 2025.

Our debaters also performed strongly in the English Speaking Union Mace Competition, finishing as runners-up in the Regional Final while debating the ban on animal testing Special recognition goes to Leo , Hrishik , and Anthony for their efforts.

At the Oxford Schools’ Debating Competition, Anthony and Kerththekan reached Finals Day at the Oxford Union, securing 52nd place out of 116 teams in a highly competitive field Further successes came at the Cambridge Union Schools' Competition, the Nottingham University Schools’ Competition, and the Oxford Union Regional Round, where AGS teams consistently ranked highly. Notably, Anthony and Kerththekan placed 1st out of 55 teams in their Oxford Union heat, earning them a place at Finals Day.

Well done to all our students who have demonstrated outstanding commitment and skill in debating this term. Their achievements reflect the strength of public speaking at AGS, and we look forward to seeing what they accomplish next.

This term has been packed with hands-on scientific discovery! Year 13 biologists explored genetic engineering by transferring a fluorescence gene into E.coli, creating glowing bacterial colonies. Year 7 and 8 students took part in exciting STEM challenges, from designing smokefree cookstoves for Nepal to constructing towering paper structures

Year 8 also participated in Chemistry at Work Day, engaging in forensic science, sustainability, and aerospace innovation, with talks from experts like Daniel James Andrew (Ridley '98) on Green Aviation.

Chemistry Society welcomed Old Aylesburian Tom Ward, who shared insights into theoretical chemistry and AI-driven research. A fantastic term of innovation, problem-solving, and scientific inspiration!

AGS Life EMBRACE OPPORTUNITY

The Politics Society had a fantastic term, hosting insightful talks with key political figures. We were honoured to welcome Laura Kyrke-Smith, Labour MP for Aylesbury, who engaged Sixth Form students in discussions on education, foreign policy, and tax Additionally, former Aylesbury Mayor Steve Lambert and current Bicester Mayor Damien Maguire shared their political journeys and views on local and national issues

It has been a fantastic term for AGS Chess, with our teams achieving impressive results in multiple competitions

In the English Schools Chess Championships, AGS A delivered a dominant 9-3 victory over Sponne School, securing their place in the next round. Meanwhile, at the British Team Chess Challenge, AGS A finished 1st with an incredible 15 5/16 points, earning a spot in the National Finals, while AGS B secured 3rd place, an outstanding achievement! Congratulations to all our players for their hard work and dedication this term. We look forward to more success next term!

Congratulations to Alex, Taman, Shreyan, and Ushakan for their outstanding performance at the Regional Finals of the Team Maths Challenge Competing against 22 teams, they secured 8th place and achieved top marks in two of the four challenges, an incredible accomplishment!

Young Enterprise Success

Our Young Enterprise teams have had a fantastic term! 'Sign and Seek', which created a BSL educational card game, impressed at a local class presentation and won the 'Most Innovative Product' award at the Milton Keynes trade fair 'Fun-Damentals' also shone, winning 'Best Interview' and 'Best Follow-Up Email' in a business pitch competition.

We’re especially proud of AGS Monday, who won the Young Enterprise Regional Business Plan Competition 2025. Their innovative water bottle idea, aimed at encouraging hydration in children through a superhero character, earned high praise from the judges. Congratulations to all teams for their hard work and achievements this term!

CELEBRATE DIFFERENCE

We welcomed the CRY team for our annual cardiac screening, bringing our total screened students to 500. This vital initiative helps detect heart conditions early, supporting CRY’s mission to reduce young sudden cardiac deaths

For Children’s Mental Health Week, Gardening Club planted water lilies, beans, and cress and picked fortune cookies with inspiring quotes, a great way to nurture well-being!

As part of Oracy Month, students have embraced speaking and listening activities across the School. From ‘Question of the Day’ discussions to debating and classroom oracy tasks, it’s been a fantastic opportunity to develop confidence and communication skills!

Mr. Ramsbottom Takes on Alcatraz for Pitch In

Mr Ramsbottom is taking on his toughest challenge yet, the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon, to raise funds for Pitch In. This gruelling event includes a 2.4km swim in icy, fast-moving waters, a 29km hilly bike ride, and a demanding 13km run, finishing with the infamous 400-step Sand Ladder. Training is well underway, and every donation and message of support will help spur him on Let’s get behind him and support this incredible effort.

Empowering Our Staff for Excellence: Learning Lunches Success

At AGS, we are proud to champion a culture of continuous professional development, innovation, and collaborative learning. This term, we introduced a series of Learning Lunches informal yet impactful sessions designed to support the growth of our dedicated staff These sessions have proven to be a great success, offering valuable insights, skill-building opportunities, and inspiration across a range of key areas

Digital Learning & Classroom Technology: Staff explored how to maximise the use of classroom technology, including interactive whiteboards and digital tools, to make lessons more engaging and effective. These hands-on sessions empowered teachers to enrich their teaching strategies and enhance student interaction

Curriculum Leadership: Aspiring curriculum leaders were supported through sessions on department appraisal, vision setting, and leading change. The discussions offered valuable perspectives on strategic leadership and its influence on improving student outcomes, sparking enthusiasm for future leadership opportunities.

Introduction to Coaching: Our staff were introduced to the fundamentals of coaching, gaining tools to support and empower colleagues These sessions reinforced the importance of a coaching culture in driving professional and personal development within the school community.

Support Staff Leadership: With a focus on values-driven leadership and wellbeing, our support staff leadership sessions were an opportunity to reflect on leading with integrity and compassion Participants explored strategies for fostering team wellbeing, balance, and a positive work culture

A Collaborative and Engaging Experience: Led by our passionate and skilled team, each session was interactive, thought-provoking, and energising. Staff engaged in rich discussions, shared best practices, and supported one another in a spirit of collaboration.

As we end the term, we celebrate the success of these Learning Lunches and the commitment of our staff to continuous improvement. The impact is clear: more confident, connected, and inspired staff all working together to provide the best possible education for our students.

John Gardner (Hampden ‘15)

We had the pleasure of hosting Old Aylesburian John Gardner (Hampden '15), who returned to share his incredible career journey since graduating with a degree in Chemistry. He inspired our Chemistry Society members as he explored the cutting-edge applications of AI tools in advancing the study of Chemistry

Dr. Guy Gratton (Lee '88)

On Friday, 24th January, Guy returned to AGS once again to share his expert insights into the dynamic field of aviation and the environment with our A-level Physics and Chemistry students. We are incredibly grateful for his ongoing support and dedication to inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers Thank you, Guy, for another fascinating and insightful visit!

Dudley (Phillips '01)

After earning an MEng in Automotive Engineering from Leeds University, Marcus built an impressive career in F1, and, since 2013, the Mercedes Formula 1 team As George Russell’s Race Engineer, he oversees car set-up and performance on race day. Before heading to Melbourne for the season’s first race, Marcus shared insights into his academic and professional journey, inspiring students with his experiences in elite motorsport

Tom Ward (Hampden ‘06)

Tom visited AGS to speak to the Chemistry Society about his research in theoretical chemistry Having worked at Oxford and Imperial College London, he shared insights into his academic journey and the use of mathematical models, simulations, and AI in understanding chemical systems. His talk provided a fascinating look into computational chemistry’s role in solving complex scientific problems, leaving students captivated by its impact on modern research.

Paul Buckland (Phillips ‘84)

Paul, former partner at Devonshires and consultant, returned again to LawSoc, continuing his support for aspiring law students. In his session, Paul shared insights from his extensive career and offered guidance on building a successful path in law His continued involvement as a Foundation Governor and mentor underscores the significant impact alumni have on the AGS community. We are grateful for Paul’s ongoing contributions to the School.

Nic Patmore (Ridley ‘08)

Nic visited AGS to share his journey into law, from studying History to qualifying as a solicitor. He provided valuable advice on securing work experience, building a strong professional reputation, and understanding the realities of working in a law firm He also offered insights from his experience on interview panels, highlighting the importance of passion and commitment in the legal profession.

Daniel Fazakerley (Denson ‘02)

Daniel visited MedSoc to share his journey into medical research, discussing different career pathways, the challenges and rewards of discovery, and key metabolic mechanisms like insulin regulation. Students were especially fascinated by the experiments his PhD team is working on. His talk provided valuable insight into the world of medical research.

Finn Bell (Lee ‘19)

Finn visited AGS for an insightful talk with the Law Society, sharing his experiences in commercial law and life in the city He highlighted the differences between studying law at university and becoming a solicitor apprentice, as well as the rigorous selection process for aspiring lawyers. Tom Larkin (Hampden ‘09)

Tom returned to AGS to deliver the Keynote Address for Year 8 Languages Day, sharing how his language skills have shaped his career as a TV news producer. He highlighted the opportunities languages provide, from meeting world leaders to boosting self-confidence, inspiring Year 8 students to appreciate the value of languages in broadening their horizons.

Ben Treacher (Lee ‘09)

We were thrilled to welcome back Ben to adjudicate House Music at the Aylesbury Waterside Theatre. A highly accomplished saxophonist, Ben has performed internationally with artists like Rita Ora, Lenny Kravitz, and Pixie Lott, gracing renowned stages such as The Royal Albert Hall and the O2 Arena. His presence at House Music, one of AGS’s biggest events, added a special touch to this prestigious competition.

Malcolm Fallen (Ridley ‘79)

It was a pleasure to welcome Malcolm back to AGS this term He generously donated a Mauriat Tenor Sax, Selmer Clarinets, and top-quality gear for our DofE expeditions Our musicians are thrilled, and this kind of philanthropy has a lasting impact on our students. Joe Kearney (Paterson ‘17)

A big thank you to Joe for returning to AGS to speak with our Sixth Formers about his career in the civil service Joe shared insights into his role, the skills required, and the entry process, as well as his passion for languages and their importance in future careers. AGS was honoured to welcome Daniel back for a powerful talk as part of our Inspirational Speakers Programme. He shared key moments from his journey, reflecting on the challenges he faced as a gay man confronting prejudice and intolerance Daniel emphasised the importance of staying true to oneself and supporting others facing similar struggles. His honesty and insight left a lasting impact on our students.

Angus Drummond

We were delighted to welcome Angus as part of our Inspirational Speakers Programme. After being diagnosed with muscular dystrophy at 23, Angus refused to let it define him His journey led him to found Limitless Travel, the UK’s leading disability travel company, making the world more accessible for all. His story of resilience and innovation was truly inspiring for our students. Thank you, Angus, for sharing your journey!

As you can see, this has been an incredibly busy term, with an immense amount of support and involvement from Old Aylesburians. Each bring something unique, yet all share a common goal, giving back to the AGS community. This cycle of paying it forward has a profound impact on our students, allowing us to deliver thought-provoking sessions that enhance their understanding of the world

Pitch In Challenge – A Huge Success!

This term, we were thrilled to see our students take part in the Pitch In Challenge, an exciting and physically demanding event in support of our Pitch In campaign. Students across all year groups participated in various challenges, pushing their physical limits and raising funds for our much-needed all-weather, multi-surface sports pitch From running to cycling and swimming, the students embraced the challenge with incredible enthusiasm

A special congratulations to Phillips House, who emerged as the overall winners of the Pitch In Challenge! Their teamwork and effort were outstanding throughout the event. Additionally, Lee 9 was recognised for covering the furthest distance as an individual form, showing exceptional dedication.

Ridley 7 also deserves a huge shout-out for their outstanding fundraising efforts, raising over £2,000 in sponsorship and securing a special prize for their achievements. Well done!

Thanks to everyone’s hard work, the challenge raised an incredible £111,000, bringing us closer to our goal of delivering a much needed all-weather, multi-surface pitch for our students We couldn’t be prouder of the collective effort and look forward to seeing the positive impact of this incredible contribution.

Pitch In Campaign Update

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our students, parents, Old Aylesburians, and the wider AGS community, we are excited to share that we are now officially in a position to begin construction of the new sports pitch this summer an entire year ahead of schedule!

To date, we have raised £714,000 of our revised fundraising target of £820,000. While we still have £106,000 left to raise, the funds we’ve secured already allow us to break ground and start building. This milestone means our students will benefit from the new pitch much sooner than anticipated, which is fantastic news for everyone involved

We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has contributed to the Pitch In Campaign, including those who supported the Pitch In Challenge. Your generosity and support are invaluable, and we look forward to updating you as we continue our journey towards reaching our final fundraising goal.

On Friday 31 January, the Question of Sport event brought together 17 teams for a night of fun, competition, and fundraising in support of the Pitch In campaign With a quiz inspired by the popular format, featuring picture Board, mystery guest, and observation rounds, the evening was filled with excitement.

Wycombe Wanderers emerged victorious after a fierce battle, beating teams like Tottenham, Barcelona, and Real Madrid in the final round Thanks to our host Iain Digby, the event ran smoothly, and we extend our thanks to our IT team, especially Paul Carson, for their support.

The event raised over £8,000 for the Pitch In campaign, bringing us closer to our goal of an all-weather, multi-surface pitch for students A big thank you to everyone who participated, bid in the auction, and helped make the evening a success Special thanks to Ellie Treherne for capturing the highlights, and to the prefects for their support.

Looking Ahead: AGS Annual Golf Day

We’re excited to announce that the next event on our calendar is the Annual AGS Golf Day, open to the entire AGS community, which will take place on May 27 at Chiltern Forest Golf Club This hugely popular event is a fantastic opportunity to catch up with old friends while enjoying a round of golf The day will be played in teams of four using the Stableford format, ensuring plenty of fun and friendly competition.
