TERI TERRY
JULY - AUTHOR VISIT
On Monday 10th July, students in Years 7 and 8 attended a talk by author Teri Terry. Teri has written some of the best children's/YA fiction in the last few years and has been a regular fixture on the Bucks Book Award shortlists over the last few years and in 2022 her book 'Dark Blue Rising' won The Sue Harris YA Prize.
Teri spoke to students about her new book 'Scare Me' which has just been released. This book is a tense, YA ghost story.
After the talk students were given the opportunity for a Q&A session which varied from asking Teri about her journey to becoming a published author to wanting if writing was a financially lucrative career!
It is clear that Teri has had a very busy, international employment history, before she embarked on a career in writing. She previously worked as an optometrist,a lawyer and a scientist, in Canada and Australia before finally ending up in the UK and following her dream of being an author.
As a final word, Teri also mentioned that her husband is a former AGS student!

The adventure takes us deep into the life-changing world of augmented reality, where even Alex will struggle to succeed against the technology. With no idea who to trust, Alex finds himself dragged into a nightmare world – where nothing is real but the game could kill you. The clock is ticking and Nightshade is closing in…
Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods (Percy Jackson #6) by Rick Riordan
Percy Jackson has saved the world multiple times - battling monsters, Titans, even giants - but these days the modern-day son of Poseidon is hoping for a regular final year at school. Too bad the Greek gods have other plans, and three new quests for Percy to complete.
First up: the cupbearer of the gods, Ganymede, is missing his golden chalice. Not only is this embarrassing (why do the gods keep losing their magical items?), it's also potentially disastrous.
One sip from the cup will turn any mortal into a powerful god. And the old gods do not take kindly to newbies Can Percy and his friends Annabeth and Grover find the chalice before it falls into the wrong hands? And even if they do, will they be able to resist its awesome power. . .?
Bad Magic (Skulduggery Pleasant Graphic Novel) by Derek Landy
A small town in the middle of Ireland, a string of unexplained deaths and a monster on the loose Better call in the experts
When Skulduggery Pleasant and Valkyrie Cain drive into Termoncara, they discover a town with a dark past and a people haunted by their own secrets. There is a creature stalking the streets –a creature who delights in cruelty, who feeds off the little hatreds, who grows stronger with every drop of blood spilled.

WHEN THE SKY FALLS BY PHIL EARLE
REVIEWED BY ARCHIE, LE7
When the Sky falls is a historic novel set in the Second World War. It is about a boy called Joseph who is sent to the city where he will live with Mrs F, and her silverback gorilla - Adonis. It is an interesting twist about life in the war I enjoyed this book lots, as the journey of the bonds deepening between Joseph and Adonis is heartwarming. I would highly recommend this book to anyonewhowantstostartto/betterunderstandlifeintheSecondWorldWar-butalsohavethe enjoymentofreadinganovel,insteadofjustthefactsfromanon-fictionbook.

BEST YEAR 7 BOOK REVIEW THE DEMONATA BOXED SET #1 BY DARREN SHAN
REVIEWED BY GAB, 7PA
The Demonata are an amazing series of books which are filled to the brim with excitement and suspense. This book by Darren Shan (the author of the award winning series Cirque du freak) is a gory, funny and engrossing book that is not for the faint of heart. I liked the gore fromthebookbecauseeventhoughitcanleaveyouscaredIlikethesuspenseitgivesoff,it justmakesyouforgetaboutfearandyoujustwanttokeepreading!Oneofmymostfavourite scenesisfromthebookcalled“demonthief”whyaboycalledkernelhastofindhisbrother as he has been stolen by demons (or so he thinks) Another thing I have to say, one of the main things I was a little annoyed about in the book was the fact that lots of the characters whowouldhavebeenreallycoolinthestoryjustdied.
Anotherthing,Ididn’tthinkIwouldsaythisaboutahorror-thrillerbook,butIkindofthinkthattherewasabitto muchgoreanddeath, thecharactersalsodiedinverygruesomeway(hencewhyissaidthisbookisn’tforthefaint hearted) overall, this series is amazing and I recommend it to a teenage audience and anyone who likes gore and horror,Igivethisfantasticbookseriesa4starrating.
BEST AROUND THE WORLD BOOK REVIEW THE CORAL ISLAND BY R. M. BALLANTYNE
REVIEWED BY BENJI, 8L
‘This is an exploration book set in the Pacific Ocean. Its three main characters are shipwreckedonadesertisland, whichtheyexplore, discoveringamazingsecretsandnatural wonders. They soon settle into island life, but their life changes forever when they realise thatthissetofislandsisnotuninhabited Thisresultsinahugeadventurearoundtheislands of the Pacific Ocean. The book, though its plot was well thought out, was not the engaging page-turner you would expect from a desert island adventure book Particularly in the first half, it was slow-paced; they were still just living peacefully on the island around half-way through. However, it did pick up pace after this, but the plot-line itself was not especially interesting or original. It covered pirates, wars, imprisonment and many other overused themes, makingitaverystandardbook.
Itcouldhavebeenmademoreinterestingifithadhadsomesortofplottwistorcliffhangertokeepmeengaged. Despite this, it used much effective descriptive language and effectively incorporated humour into the plot, particularly in the character Peterkin Gay, who frequently jokes and jests throughout the book There was also a very effective scene in which the characters are stuck on a rock island in a storm, which incorporates exhilarating descriptions to bring the grim scene to life. I would recommend this book to fans of exploration books and pirate bookfans.Overall,3outof5stars.

BEST 'BANNED BOOK' REVIEW ANIMAL FARM BY GEORGE ORWELL
REVIEWED BY JAN, 9R
I thoroughly enjoyed reading 1984 as I found it a very interesting book primarily because it wasdifferenttomostmainstreamdystopiannovels.1984presentsaworldwherelovedoes notexist, thoughtcrimeispunishedbydeath;historyisconstantlyrewrittenandlanguageis meaningless.
Upon doing some research I discovered that Orwell wrote 1984 after observing the inner workings of the Soviet Union under the rule of Stalin. The book describes a life of a man calledWinston, wholivesinatotalitariancountry(calledOceania)andbecomesinvolvedin the act of rebellion against the regime. It is revealed that his act of defiance was actually influencedbyaspywhosejobwastoweedoutpeoplewhoopposethesystem.

BEST NON-FICTION BOOK REVIEW
DOUGLAS HAIG: FROM THE SOMME TO VICTORY
REVIEWED BY GEORGE, 8D
Douglas Haig: from the Somme to Victory is a Biography of Douglas Haig’s life as a military field Marshal He was the single most controversial general in British military history During the first world war he played a major role during the battle of the Somme and other key turning points in the war. After he and his forces returned home he was heralded as a hero but his reputation soon began to fall apart and he was cast aside as a military failure The book goes in depth into his personal life before the war and his military ancestry as well as the relationship with his wife Dorothy and their 4 children. The reason I would rate this book so highly is because it takes a new perspective on Haig’s career and rather than presenting him as a military failure.
It takes all of his life and analyzes it critically and shows that he was more of successful tactician rather than a brutal butcherer For to long has the mainstream Historical author community presented Haig as a bad person and this book has changed the status quo forever. Another reason I enjoyed this book was because it used new found evidence such as some new personal diaries of Haig and letters to his beloved wife. These key pieces of new information shed a new light on the supposed failures of his and flips them on their head completely. This book is good for any budding historian who wishes to have a non biased but personal and detailed account of Haig's life that is reliable and uses trusted sources. Suggested audience: 12+ as the book uses complicated and more advanced vocabulary. Rating: 5 stars
