BUFFINGTON HOMES

B

uffington Homes of Arkansas is a homebuilding company that allows families in Northwest Arkansas to build and personalize a home they love in a one-stop shop. “Our vision is to give families the opportunity to create a beautiful home in this beautiful part of Arkansas,” says Buffington Homes CEO Jake Helton. “Our goal is much more than just to build homes and move on; we want each of our neighborhoods to be a true community that not only looks beautiful but will last for a very long time. We strive to create a place where a buyer can truly put their own mark on a home and where the home will continue to hold its value.” Through their signature Design Studio, Buffington gives homebuyers a streamlined process where they can personalize and design their house. “The Design Studio is not only what makes us stand out in the market place, but it truly is the best part of building a home with Buffington Homes,” he says. Buffington’s design studio is a place where each buyer can personalize and design their new home with Design Studio director Allison Adams and Amanda Burcham,

OF ARKANSAS

licensed designers and new home experts who can tailor the design of a house to meet families’ wants and needs. Helton and Adams say the Design Studio has been a major factor in helping the company enjoy roughly 377 percent growth since it was founded in 2007. “We strive to take care of the buyer from the contract all the way to designing and moving into their new home, and the Design Studio makes this part so special,” Helton says. “All of the selections for the exterior and interior of the home are located in one place. This allows the individual to save time that they would otherwise spend going from showroom to showroom. It also gives them the opportunity to see all of the selections together in one place. It allows the build process to be a very customized, but streamlined process.” Salesman Adam Reynolds believes people would be surprised to see the level of commitment and the amount of time that goes into the planning of each community. “The efforts that go in behind the scenes to make the community beautiful combined with the design integrity of each home in the community might surprise people,” he says. “They are also surprised to see the level of detail and thought that goes into allowing an

32

individual the ability to personalize their home. There are over 100 options that a buyer could choose between for their home and more than 200 design selections they can choose with Amanda’s help to personalize their home. So, you really can design a home that feels and looks like you, but in a much faster and more streamlined process than a custom build. “It has been really cool to see the Design Studio develop into one of the most important steps of a buyer’s build process,” Reynolds says. “We strive to give a top design studio experience and roll out the red carpet – regardless of the size of the home or price point. We also take product knowledge very seriously to help our buyers make the best decisions to protect their investment.” Helton says he loves the concept of taking a raw piece of land and building it into a community that families will live in and enjoy for years to come. “Watching a community develop from start to finish is a really cool part of this job,” he says. “Life is too short not to love where you live. At Buffington Homes, we make it easier and more affordable than you might think. We strive to deliver the best home-buying experience to you through quality floor plans, a personalized design experience, and a team that builds your home in less than a year and communicates each step of the way.”

Homegrown COMPANIES

BLACKMON AUCTIONS

B

lackmon Auctions, a third-generation, family-owned, auction company specializing in construction, trucking, industrial, and real estate sales is celebrating its 81st year in business. “We are still owned by the original family, and we have been in business longer than any others in the industry,” says CEO Thomas Blackmon. “We are also rare that for the size we are, the auctioning is still done by the owner of the company. Many other auction companies our size are owned by a board of directors, and the auctioneer is hired for the day. But not us.” Blackmon’s hands-on involvement means he plays a variety of roles when the gavel starts banging. “Auctioning is more than just getting up and calling numbers out. The nature of the auction business puts me in people’s lives when they are going through a major transition,” he says. “I wear many different hats being an auctioneer. In the course of an auction, I will be a lawyer, an accountant, a therapist, a salesman, a carnival barker, a bouncer, a preacher, a banker, a debt collector, a mediator, and sometimes just a shoulder to cry on. The business is different every day, and that’s what I love about it.” Blackmon’s grandfather, Eddie, started the company in 1938. He owned part interest in a cattle barn in Dewitt, Ark., and the auctioneer he had working for him got in trouble running a raffle scam and was run out of town. Eddie did the auction that night, and the rest is history. In 1965, Thomas’ father, Tom, took over the auction business, changed it from a seasonal to a full-time business, and focused on selling farm equipment. He added construction equipment auctions in 1972, expanded into the trucking, logging, railroad, and manufacturing equipment in the early 1980s, and from a regional farm auction company to an internationally respected auction company. Thomas Blackmon took over the business in 2010 and added real estate auctions. Today, the business has sale yards in Little Rock and Muskogee, Okla., sells real estate in five surrounding states, conducts about 70

auctions a year, is licensed in 24 states, and is one of the oldest auction companies in the nation. One of the secrets to Blackmon Auctions’ success has been the loyalty of its full-time employees, who average more than 15 years of service to the company. “Coming into a third generation business, my greatest accomplishment has been to keep the company running and growing,” Thomas says. “From the time I was old enough to ride in a car I was going with my dad to auctions.” He started with minor jobs and trying to stay out of the way. As he got older, he helped set up sale sites, worked as a bid spotter, and eventually got his auctioneer’s license in 1991. “It is a job where the only way to learn is to do. So I did, and I was horrible starting out,” he says with a laugh. “Over the last 28 years I have learned a little more, but I still learn something new at almost every auction.” With experience, he has gained perspective and is honored to carry on the family business. “My father and mother were both my heroes and my mentors,” he says. “When I was young and starting out, I thought that it would be easy to run a business and make the daily decisions. After a few years on the job, I started to see that my parents were business geniuses! “I feel the responsibility that my family has put on me to continue running a business that has so much of my families blood, sweat, and tears invested in it. The auction business is like most businesses; it has changed a lot over the last 20 years. It is a constant battle to keep up with new technology and new competition. There is a high number of third generation businesses that fail, and that stays in my mind on a daily basis. My motivation is my intense fear of failure.” Lucky for him, he’s in a place where his services are valued. “Arkansas is an auction state. Arkansans love a good auction,” he says. “When I’m auctioning in my home state, I feel like I’m getting to work with family.”

“AUCTIONING IS MORE THAN JUST GETTING UP AND CALLING NUMBERS OUT.”

TRIPLE-S ALARM

hile many business owners dream of being able to pass their enterprise on to their children, Roderick Edwards’ parents urged him to do his own thing. It wasn’t out of concern, though; they didn’t want him to feel handcuffed to their business. So he set his sights on a medical career. He graduated pre-med and enrolled at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, intent on becoming a heart or plastic surgeon. But when his dad wanted to retire, Edwards put the brakes on a medical career and took over day-to-day operations of the family business. Seth Ward founded Triple-S Alarm, a residential security company, in 1975. Two years later, he sold the business to Rick Edwards, and his wife, Mary. Since then, the Edwardses, along with sons, Roderick and Chad, who manage day-today operations today, have built Triple-S into one of the largest family-owned low voltage contractors in the South. They cover the entire state from offices in Little Rock, Pine Bluff and Northwest Arkansas, and their products and services include mass notification, access control, video surveillance, nurse call, audio and video solutions, U.L. safety certifications, testing and inspections, and our own in-house U.L. Central Monitoring Station. “Most building and homeowners require peace of mind and reliability when it comes to monitoring their systems,” Roderick says. “When a fire alarm, panic, or break-in occurs, a quick response by fire, police, and medical can mean the difference in life or death. That’s why Triple-S Alarm Co., provides our own inhouse UL Central monitoring station. Rest assured that professional operators will respond to your every

need, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.” The company’s success over the decades is firmly rooted in the belief in customer service. “We don’t ever want to lose sight that our customers are the ones who have made all of our accomplishments possible,” he says. “I was always told, ‘Take care of the customer, and the customer will take care of you.’ “For 43 years now, there’s a Triple-S sign or truck everywhere you go,” Roderick says. “There’s a lot of dedication because they know our family is from Arkansas. We understand the community. We’re giving back to the community through education, philanthropy and scholarships.” The Edwards family are members in the Towers of Old Main giving society at the University of Arkansas, has endowed a scholarship for the University of Arkansas at Little Rock’s nursing program, regularly donates to UAMS and The Make-A-Wish Foundation, and has the student-athlete entrance of UALR’s Jack Stephens Center named in their honor. “Our thought is: when it’s all over, you’re not going to take your money with you. So, help others,” Roderick says. “Make this life richer. Invest in others with educational opportunities and scholarships. Give back to Arkansas.” The lessons on the successful symbiotic relationship between business, customer and community are ones that Roderick says he hopes his nieces and nephews are learning. “We’re trying to set a good example for the next generation of Edwardses that are going to be in this business and keep this company going.”

ith a smile, Bob Russell shakes his head as he laments the days when auto dealers thought the best way to advertise was to go on air and yell about their deals in television commercials. “The trend was to go on TV and all of these dealerships screaming and hollering,” he says. “Luckily that type of advertising has gone by the wayside. We’ve never gotten on TV and yelled at the customers. We’ve always been low key.” That laid-back approach has allowed the Russell family to enjoy 73 years of success selling automobiles to multiple generations of Arkansans. By the early 1950’s, John Russell went to work as general sales manager at Critz Chevrolet Co., in North Little Rock. After more than 15 years, he bought the dealership from John M. Critz, and Russell Chevrolet debuted on Jan. 2, 1963. In time, Russell brought his sons, Bob and Rick, into the automobile sales. Within a decade, he opened the first Honda dealership in Arkansas in 1972. When John Russell retired, Bob took over the Chevy dealership while Rick assumed control of the Honda dealership. Today, the third generation of Russells are in charge of the family-owned dealerships. Bob’s son, Brett, leads Russell Chevrolet and Rick’s son, Jarrod, runs Russell Honda. “It’s kind of unusual for companies to make it to a third generation of family ownership,” says Bob Russell. “A lot of companies don’t make it that far. We’ve been fortunate. “It’s a testament to our employees and our repeat customers,” he says. “When you’ve been doing business as long as we have, you have to have a sterling reputation. We don’t put pressure on the customer when they come into the dealerships to try and buy a car or a service. It’s all a person-to-person approach. That’s how we’ve always done business.”

Today, Russell has the largest selection of new Chevrolet vehicles in all of Arkansas, ranks as one of the 200 largest Chevy dealers in the nation, and is a multi-year recipient of the General Motors Chevrolet Mark of Excellence Trophy. “Being a family-owned dealership means we answer to our customers, not a bunch of stockholders,” Brett Russell says. “The family and staff of Russell Chevrolet understand that the purchase of a new or pre-owned vehicle is a big commitment. That’s why we take pride in going the extra mile for our customers. We can provide you with the exact vehicle you’re looking for without having to shop all over town or the internet.” The dealership has a fully-trained and knowledgeable sales staff – many of whom have been with the company for 10 or more years – that is ready to help customers make an informed decision on their purchase. Jarrod Russell says the family Honda dealership is operated on the same business mindset that his grandfather established 56 years ago. “At Russell Honda, our primary goal is to satisfy our customers. We strive to make buying or leasing a new vehicle a pleasant and rewarding experience,” Jarrod Russell says. “We work hard to get you into the vehicle you have always wanted, and we work with a vast array of lending sources to make sure you get the most complete and comprehensive financial package available.” While the vast majority of dealerships were family owned in the past, he said most have sold out to corporate interests. “Sometimes it feels like we’re a dying breed,” he says. “Thirty or 40 years ago every town had a dealership. Now, you’re hardpressed to find many familyowned dealerships anywhere. We’ve got a vested interest in this dealership, its success and survival.”

“IT’S KIND OF UNUSUAL FOR COMAPNIES TO MAKE IT TO A THIRD GENERATION ... WE’VE BEEN FORTUNATE.”

manda Herman chuckles at the confusion her employer’s name creates. “We have to tell people all of the time that we are from Arkansas, not the United Kingdom,” she says. “We’ve been helping Arkansans navigate the loan process since 1898. “It’s definitely a conversation starter. We do have fun with it.” Herman is the corporate marketing director of Bank of England Mortgage, a division of the family-owned England, Ark.founded bank, which has corporate offices in Little Rock and grown to a company of more than 1,000 employees with branches in 46 states and 145 locations throughout the United States. “We’ve got the great rates you need, the ‘big bank’ products you expect, the friendly neighborhood service you value, and local underwriting and closing, which means quicker turn times.” Bank of England Mortgage provides its clients peace of mind knowing they are working with a credible national mortgage banker with the expertise and services that are traditionally offered by the largest financial services institutions in the country – with the integrity of a local community bank. It knows that customers are looking for two things: the best loan with the lowest possible rate, and the highest standards of customer service. The mortgage division has expanded by offering the most comprehensive selection of mortgage options on the market, a mobile application and the newest technology for loan processes. “Our mission is to deliver total value to our customers. This means competitive rates, stressfree closings, extensive product knowledge, and a friendly helpful attitude.” Bank of England Mortgage understands customers are making a commitment when buying a new home, refinancing or cashing out the equity in their home. Customers can be sure that the Bank of England

Mortgage will do the utmost to answer all questions quickly, so patrons can be confident that they have the best loan to fit their financial goals. BOE mortgage professionals stand by ready to give the personal attention clients deserve with respect due to a valued customer. It even has its construction and renovation team and a qualifications department to help customers improve their credit score. “We offer some powerful mortgage options that a lot of lenders, especially local lenders, don’t have the ability to offer. Our success is due primarily to the talent of our people and access to hundreds of mortgage products at industry best pricing.” While the nation’s housing market and related industries have seen their trials and tribulations over the past 15 years, Brad Canada, SVP says Bank of England Mortgage has been able to prosper due to its senior management and operations staff. “We were founded 120 years ago and made it through tough times when others haven’t,” he says. “We’ve become lean where we can and have the greatest employees, who work really hard to make sure the company is successful. “Our customers are our top priority, and we know how important it is to provide the support you need. That means competent help, a fast response, better service than expected, and, yes, we answer the phone!” As other banks succumbed to the pressure of the failing housing market, Bank of England Mortgage was able to expand. Its management team has a combined 150 years of mortgage experience and is actively involved as members and board members on local, state and national mortgage broker and banker associations. “We’ve been growing every year,” Michael Cupples, SVP says. “Just in 2017, we added 15 (mortgage office) branches. Some years it’s more, others it’s a bit less. It really depends on the industry. Even in down times, we’ve been able to add branches and pick up really great producers. Growth is always in our future.”

“We have a diverse company of dancers, and they are all very talented artists...” “Just a little bit of money can really go a long way. We can build a variety of large-based programs from one gift.” One such gift enabled Ballet Arkansas to launch the Ballet Arkansas Live Stream in 2017. Performances are now broadcast into rooms at Arkansas Children’s Hospital and are also used as educational outreach in schools. “Our live stream is a way for us to access more rural areas and reach those who can’t travel to where our performances are,” Fothergill says. “As long as someone has an Internet connection, they can be there live with us.” Financial support also enables Ballet Arkansas to build sets and costumes which can then be rented to other ballet companies to earn additional revenue. Since Ballet Arkansas’ founding in 1978, more than 100,000 people have experienced ballet performances, and another 13,000 people will be reached this season. Increasing access to professional dance performances has been a goal of the husband and wife team of Michael Fothergill, executive and artistic director, and Catherine, who have led the organization since 2017. “The first year, we had a lot of things we wanted to accomplish, and we just ran as fast as we could with our ideas,” Catherine says. The Fothergills also added two dancers to the company, bringing the total to 14 professional dancers, the company’s largest to date. More than 300 dancers from across the country applied for the two jobs, she says. “We have a diverse company of dancers, and they are all very talented artists and dancers,” Fothergill says. “They are strong in both classical and contemporary works.” Under the Fothergills’ leadership, Ballet Arkansas has expanded its season lineup, which now includes four main stage productions in Little Rock and at least one or two tours throughout the region. “Ballet Arkansas is not only about presenting the beauty and brilliance of a professional dance performance,” Fothergill says. “We are committed to our community and to arts education. Through partnerships with organizations such as Arkansas Children’s Hospital, Arkansas Arts

The BridgeWay provides a continuum of care that is safe, secure and serene. Just as each patient is different, so too are our programs. The BridgeWay is the only psychiatric hospital in Arkansas with distinct programs for seniors 55 and older, adults 18 and older, adolescents, ages 13-17, and children, ages 4-12. Whether it is for mood, thought or substance abuse disorders, we provide separate units for each population.
