Rainy Day Ideas Pitter-patter, splash-splosh – the echo of those huge raindrops streaming against sodden windowsills and dripping roofs can be a major disruption to a day of planned activities! The option of an outdoor exploration or leisurely browse suddenly becomes limited and all thoughts are diverted to indoor recreation. The question is – what can the children do on a rainy day? To avoid being challenged by the inevitable pangs of boredom that children often succumb to on wet days, develop a creative plan that will transform a bleak drizzly Primary Times has provided some rainy day ideas here:

Host a Games Tournament Encourage a bit of healthy competition by hosting a Games Tournament. Invite a few of your child’s classmates around to take part in a cross section of mind-challenging and luck based games to give each child a chance of winning. Rummage through the cupboards to dig out those traditional board games such as Connect 4, Scrabble, Junior Monopoly, Cluedo, Twister and Game of Life, or alternatively teach them some classic card games such as Trumps or Rummy. These traditional games can be a welcome alternative to computer based games as communication is usually face to face rather than screen based. Direct a Play Many children love to perform, act, dance and sing in front of a friendly family audience and will happily spend hours dreaming up a truly original theatrical display.

They’ll probably need some form of creative direction so encourage them to use their imaginations to produce a unique set of characters and inventive storyline. Construct a stage from household props and make costumes from a variety of unused material – simply let the results are sure to be entertaining!

Produce a magazine

Creative minds are needed to produce a magazine and as children are the masters of original thought they are sure to create an interesting publication. As the rain pours down outside let the children labour away indoors at the kitchen table,

cutting and pasting the original way using adverts and images from old magazines. Perhaps they can produce their own version of Primary Times listing all their favourite attractions and events!

Emulate the Great Baking is a wonderful activity to do on a rainy day that can easily pass an hour or two. Recreate perfect teatime treats, tasty cakes and elaborate pastries with the children who will love to stir up the sludgy consistency of a cake mix and decorate cakes with a mixture of sweet coloured icing and an assortment of candy toppings.

Taking the

Tablet Earlier this year

newspapers reported the ‘drug-like’ qualities of Tablets and other electronic devices. A small study in France found that letting children aged 4-10 play on a Tablet prior to having surgery was as effective at calming them as a sedative. Meanwhile in New York, Dr Nicholas Kardaras, Executive Director of the Dunes East Hampton rehab, and author of Glow Kids: How Screen Addiction is Hijacking Our Kids – and How to Break the Trance wrote in the New York Post newspaper that tablets and electronic devices had the same effect on children’s brains as Class A drugs and were even more addictive.

As Christmas is looming, children are already starting to think about their ‘Christmas List’ and there’s no doubt that Tablets and even smart phones will be prevalent. Technology is now a fact of life; parents don’t have to like it but we do need to accept it. An Ofcom survey in 2015 revealed that half of 3-4 year olds in Britain own a Tablet. That figure rises to 75% by age 15.

There is little doubt that technology and technology usage causes friction in many homes. As parents we need to encourage our children towards healthy use of Tablets and other electronic devices. First and foremost, putting a time cap in place is essential. The American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) recently reported that the average child in the United States spends seven hours a day in front of some sort of screen. Now, you don’t need to have a degree in medicine to know that that is simply far too much time.

The AAP also advises that children spend no more than two hours on screens and that time be spent with ‘quality content.’ But what exactly is ‘quality content’?

There are plenty of Apps available claiming to be educational but there is, at present, no quality control. If you are unsure what exactly an App is then ask an 8-year-old, this is how I found out. Then go on to www.internetmatters. org, a website that is specifically dedicated to keeping children safe online, and check out their ‘Parents’ Guide to Apps’.

There are a few simple steps parents can take when purchasing Apps for kids. The first and easiest is to ask around. This is how I found out about Squeebles. There are various different Squeebles Apps (all available on iTunes) that cover spelling, times tables and other KS2 maths challenges. There is also the opportunity to purchase a bundle that cover all of the above. The games are interactive and fun. If your child gets spellings every week you can tailor-make a test on the App to cover them. In a similar vein parenting webpages are a good place to ask.

Safety is also a big issue when children are allowed onto electronic devices as these days most of them connect to the internet.

Parenting experts now advise that simply blocking is not enough. Pcadvisor.co.uk recently published a list of the 9 Best Kids’ Tablets 2016 and made the point that the “advantage of a specially designed kids’ tablet include a ‘safe’ web browser (or no internet access) and games and preloaded apps appropriate for kids.” The issue is that while younger children embrace ‘kids’ Tablets’, children over 7 tend to dismiss them as ‘babyish’ and want something more grown up, or certainly more grown up looking. The iPad is still very much coveted by children but as pcadvisor.co.uk points out they “don’t have great parental controls” and are “quite fragile.”

The main problem with blocking is that free Wi-Fi is now the norm and while you can block certain content at home it’s not always blocked publicly. Therefore, the parenting gurus say, you should discuss with your child the reasons why you want to restrict their access. This isn’t an easy conversation to have but it is a vital one. The way I dealt with it was to liken the internet to a massive city (I chose New York) where there are some really amazing things to experience – the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building etc. but there are also places where its dangerous for adults to go. I said to my child, what sort of parent would I be if I took you to New York and then left you there, alone, to try to find your way around.

When your family buy fireworks, they need to always be British Standard marked fireworks in compliance with registered number: BS7 114.  Fireworks should always be kept in a sealed metal box or biscuit tin, never put fireworks in your pockets.  It is really important that the adult responsible for arranging and lighting the fireworks reads all the instructions.  Never, ever throw a firework.  Once a firework has been lit, don't go anywhere near it make sure everyone watching is a safe distance away.  If you have a bonfire it should be built far away from any hedges, buildings or fences, and there should be a garden hose ready in case of any emergencies.  Keep all pets indoors.  Oh and finally, this one is for mums, dads or anyone organising a display at home: fireworks and alcohol do not mix - it's a good idea to nominate an adult who isn't drinking at the party to be in charge of the fireworks.  So celebrate safely, always follow the Firework Code and have a great Bonfire Night!



Cooking with Compassion

Does your child love cooking? Why not encourage them to put their skills to good use by entering Junior Compassionate Cook, the RSPCA Assured’s cookery video competition for 6 to 12 year olds?

It’s a really fun way for kids who love to get creative in the kitchen to make the connection between good welfare and good food. What’s more, they’ll be in with a chance of winning some great prizes!

To enter, simply film them preparing their favourite dish and upload the video to the RSPCA Assured website www. rspcaassured.org.uk/junior-compassionate-cook. Videos must not be longer than five minutes or more than 500MB. The recipe can be for anything they like, from sausages to salmon, chicken fajitas to chocolate brownies, but it must contain RSPCA Assured ingredients - whether it’s eggs, fish or meat.

You have until Monday 14 November to enter. Voting closes on Tuesday 13 December, so the sooner they enter the better.

If you’re looking for recipe inspiration, check out the website where you’ll find lots of useful tips, plus the 2015 winning video entries.

Remember, they’re not looking for expert chefs or filmmakers, but lively and fun presenters demonstrating how to make simple, tasty recipes.

Winners will be announced during the second week of January 2017. So get cooking and good luck.

Eyes On the Prize This year’s celebrity judges are The People’s Choice and Andi Peters and Liz McClarnon.

Judge’s Choice winners will both receive an iPad and Junior Compassionate Cook trophy, and four runners-up will each receive a medal.

But that’s not all! Each winner and runner-up - as well as their schools - will win a fun range of children’s cookware, so they can cook up a storm and encourage their classmates to do the same.

Winners and runners-up will also receive a year’s subscription to the RSPCA’s Animal Action magazine.

Getting kids cooking and having fun in the kitchen is really important. This competition encourages them to think about where food comes from and the welfare of farm animals.”

How to Find a Friend - Maria S. Costa (Oxford, £6.99) Squirrel and Rabbit have both moved into new homes and hope to find a friend — but they don’t have any luck.

Unbeknown to them they each have a bug determined to help. Look closely at the wonderful pictures and you will see how close they get while just missing each other.

See if there’s a happy ending in this charming and funny picture book that is great to share with just a sentence on each page and so much to discuss in the expressive pictures.

Ambleside Every year on the third Saturday in November, the people of Ambleside parade through the town at dusk, carrying hundreds of paper lanterns. Young and old turn out to witness this spectacular procession, as traffic is halted and Christmas street lights throughout the town centre are switched on as if by magic by Santa Claus. Then there are FIREWORKS.

Carlisle City Centre Organised by Carlisle City Council, this free event will provide a packed family entertainment programme, to suit all ages. Celebrity acts will join local talent groups and performers on a city centre stage, providing a community feel to the event.
