Avec ce cinquième numéro, nous sommes fiers de vous présenter non seulement la cinquième édition digitale, mais aussi la première version imprimée d’Awotélé à l’occasion du 50ème anniversaire des Journées Cinématographiques de Carthage. Oui, nous revenons à Carthage, où le 3e numéro d’Awotélé s’était focalisé sur le cinéma d’Afrique du Nord et sa capacité à déranger. Cette fois, nous mettons en lumière les succès internationaux du cinéma d’Afrique du Nord, et comment le cinéma du reste de l’Afrique se mesure comparativement à celui de cette zone. Et parce qu’une Afrique unie est aussi une Afrique plus forte, Awotélé, la revue panafricaine, met l’accent sur la publication et la traduction d’articles écrits dans plusieurs langues du continent. On peut percevoir cela dans le premier focus de cette édition, avec des articles relatant le talent créatif, les thèmes socialement responsables, et la dynamique des personnages visibles dans certains des meilleurs films africains de tous les temps; films qui retracent les récits africains, et qui confirment que leurs conteurs sont véritablement universels. Au-delà de l’appréciation qu’Awotélé fait des cinémad d’Afrique, les articles de ce 5e numéro mettent beaucoup plus l’accent sur le fait que l’histoire mouvementée de l’Afrique est faite d’oppression, de colonisation, de racisme, de sexisme, et bien plus encore. Ils ne laissent personne douter que les cinémas d’Afrique continuent de naviguer et survivre parmi les batailles gagnées et les batailles perdues à l’échelle du continent. With Awotele #5, we proudly present to you not just the fifth digital edition but also the first print version in time for the 50-year anniversary of the Carthage International Film Festival. Yes, we return to Carthage, where Awotele #3 focused on North African cinema, and its ability to disturb. This time round, we spotlight the international victories of North African cinema, and how cinema from the rest of Africa measures up in comparison. And because a unified Africa is a stronger Africa, Awotele, the pan-African journal sustains its emphasis to publish and translate contributions from the continent’s many languages. This can be seen in this edition’s first focal point, with contributions chronicling the creative talent; socially-conscious themes, and dynamic personae evident in some of the best African films of all time; films that affirm African stories, and her storytellers as truly universal. Beyond its appreciation of African Cinema, the contributions in Awotele #5 highlight much more than Africa’s variegated history of oppression, colonisation, racism, sexism, and much more. They leave no one in doubt that African cinema continues to navigate and survive a continent-wide history of battles won and battles lost.
