‘Letters to Editor’ Cont. from Page 10 White Eagle, you know better as Frederick Gomez. He has become one of our brilliant writers and has had four or five of our cover stories published in The Paper. In addition, he has become a close personal friend of both The Paper and of the Publisher and Associate Publisher, lyle e davis and Evelyn Madison. We were glad our newspaper helped provide the inspiration to Frederick so that he healed. To see him today, you’d never guess that he was at one time, near death. We are grateful he is still with us. (Now, Frederick . . . get busy! Go write another cover story!) Attention: Letters to the Editor Thanks for providing WWII aviation articles. In your "THE LAST FLIGHT: issue you mentioned cliche' "sighted sub, sank same"attributed to a PV-1 aircraft. It was a Lockheed Hudson PBO bomber. The pilot was a non-commissioned Petty Officer First Class, Donald Mason, AMMIC NAP (Aviation Machinist Mate First Class Naval Aviation Pilot). It should be noted that there was another Petty Officer Pilot rating, AP (Aviation Pilot) /s/Seymour WWII Naval Veteran

From Carlsbad: Dear Evelyn: We are so happy to see The Paper in the La Costa Coffee Roasting Company in the Von's Shopping Center, in Carlsbad, near the Dove Library. We hope we continue to be able to pick it up there and, hopefully, more places in addition to the other Carlsbad locations to where you are already distributing the paper. If you do continue to leave copies at the La Costa Coffee Roasting Company,

please add it to the list of "where to find the paper" in Carlsbad. Love all the cover stories and columns. Thanks for your continued support of the Carlsbad Republican Women Federated. /s/Leita McCormick Carlsbad, CA. Why am I a volunteer at the VA (Veterans Affairs Oceanside Outpatient Clinic) Initially it was brought to my attention that by volunteering at any community organization that would be a way and means of networking, suggesting one could meet a contact for possible job opportunity. I took that advice and choose to be a volunteer at the VA’s clinic. The VA volunteer supervisor was seeking individuals to become greeters. This meant that I would stand outside the building entrance for about four-hours and warmly greet veterans and family members as they enter the clinic. Also as a greeter I would assist veterans by providing wheel chairs and accompany the Vets to the medical departments. Later during the day as they were leaving; with a smiling expression I would say “I hope you have a nice evening and thank you for your service to our country.” Many of them would acknowledge me (as a veteran-volunteer) and sincerely replied with a “Thank you for your assistance, its much appreciated” Networking now was the least of my own personal concerns, however, volunteering at the Oceanside VA clinic has a much more profound significance not only by welcoming and acknowledging these veterans for their service to our beloved country, but I became more aware of all the various military services these men and women served in as I noticed the military insignia’s on their caps and light-jackets they wear; some emblems indicating the war theaters they served and fought in. Occasionally while a vet was waiting for the van transportation (that is available to pick them up and bring them back home; this is a free fee service) with some small talk I would mention

during the evenings I intently view at all of the war documentaries’ on the Military Channel so I could learn something from these authentic combat films and from time to time without any second thought a veteran would say: “You probably saw me in combat, when I was sixteen” (or older) and they would mentioned the war theater they were in during World War II. As we parted I’d repeat: “Take care, hope you have a nice evening.” In my mind I’d think, ‘till we meet again,’ knowing some of them would return to the health care facility. Being a volunteer has its rewards and it is my small contribution to the VA staffs along with it many military patients (from various war campaigns) whom are provided the best medical evaluations and treatments’ available. I know for a fact because I am a veteran. Bruce Marchetta Oceanside, CA PS: The VA can use many volunteers, please contact us @ (858) 642-3267. (PSS: I make it a daily practice outside the VA to thank our active military, retirees, police officers, fire department and a few others!

The suspect fled the scene on foot in an unknown direction.

Bruce Marchetta Editor’s Note: We, too, admire the Oceanside VA Clinic. The staff there is outstanding, the facility is state of the art . . . and the veterans are both proud and honored to receive outstanding care there. Our compliments to Mr. Marchetta for his outstanding service, both military and his volunteer efforts. How about you? Care to volunteer?

In minutes Carlsbad Police and the FBI responded to the location and combed the area for the suspect. A comprehensive investigation was conducted at the scene. The suspect is still at large. There were no injuries and the amount of financial loss is not yet known.
