This year was started with a direct flight from San Diego up to Vancouver with a hotel

The four night cruise, departed from Vancouver, BC, with a stop in the quaint town of Astoria, Oregon, with two days at sea, and ending back in San Diego.

“135,” I answered The nurse put me on the scale.

Turns out I weight 180 lbs.

“5’4,” I said.

The nurse measured and it turns out I only was 5’2.

Choosing a Profession An old country preacher had a teenage son, and it was getting time the boy should give some thought to choosing a profession. Like many young men his age, the boy didn't really know what he wanted to do, and he didn't seem too concerned about it.

One day, while the boy was away at school, his father decided to try an experiment.

He went into the boy's room and placed on his study table four objects.

1. A Bible.

2. A silver dollar.

3. A bottle of whisky.

4. And a Playboy magazine.

After resting in these luxurious rooms a bit, or as some chose to hit the streets of Vancouver for some shopping, a gourmet dinner at the hotel capped the night.

Featured of course was a Pacific Northwest salmon or stuffed chicken with which object he picks up.

If it's the Bible, he's going to be a preacher like me, and what a blessing that would be!

If he picks up the dollar, he's going to be a business man, and that would be okay, too.

But if he picks up the bottle, he's going to be a no-good drunken bum, and Lord, what a shame that would be.

And worst of all if he picks up that magazine he's going to be a skirt-chasing womanizer.'

The old man waited anxiously, and soon heard his son's foot-steps as he entered the house whistling and headed for his room.

The boy tossed his books on the bed, and as he turned to leave the room he spotted the objects on the table.

With curiosity in his eye, he walked over to inspect them.

Finally, he picked up the Bible and placed it under his arm. He picked up the silver dollar and dropped into his pocket. He uncorked the

The next morning found everyone had ocean view balconies staterooms on the Holland America ship.

••••• My aging Aunt Mildred was 93-years old and was intensely despondent over the recent death of her husband Uncle Willy.

She decided that she would just kill herself and join him in death.

Thinking that it would be best to get it over with quickly, she took out his old Army pistol and made the decision to shoot herself in the heart, since it was badly broken in the first place. Not wanting to miss that vital organ and become a vegetable and a burden to someone, she called her doctor's office to inquire as to just exactly where the heart would be on a woman.

Today this opening is one of the busiest rivers to America for importing and exporting goods from around the world up and down the river to 5 western states. This river also separates the states of Oregon and Washington with beautiful views on both sides.

While in Astoria cargo ships slipped in and out of the mouth of the river through an area of water known as “The Bar,’ a most treacherous American river opening.

Over 200 ships have perished at this mouth due to the tremendous force of the river

waters meeting the Pacific Ocean. The captain cautioned the passengers onboard the Ms. Westerdam to be careful while passing through this river opening that the ship might ‘roll’ with the current. But it was smooth sailing up the river for the ship.

After a full day of excursions the ship sailed south to San Diego. While enjoying two days at sea, they enjoyed the casino on board, bingo, karaoke, dancing, cooking classes, art auctions, and plenty of rest and relaxation in addition to a lovely private cocktail party hosted by the Silvergate owners David and Mary Ann Petree.

Page 4 - November 22, 2012 Sheriff’s Department Warns of Armed Robbers in San Marcos The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, which is the law enforcement autority in San Marcos, has alerted businesses in San Marcos that a string of armed robberies have occurred within San Marcos with some distinct characteristics.

The robberies have occurred during the last five days of the calendar month (next is November 26-30); the robberies have occurred between 8:30 PM and 10:00 PM; the victim businesses have been small restaurants with no more than two employees on duty.

There are some things that businesses can do which would mitigate their risk.

These include: • Having high-quality audio and video recording equipment installed in a highly visible and thereby deterrent manner.

• Limit the amount of cash on hand.

Local News • Have extra staff on-duty around closing time as this may deter the robbers.

• Report suspicious persons to the Sheriff's Department (760510-5200 or 9-1-1). The robbers have been 1-2 man crews that approach on foot and flee through a back door, through the kitchen. The suspects have been white or Hispanic with covered faces and "hoodies."

Road. Take a good look at these surveillance photos and see if you recognize their clothing or demeanor. They entered the store on November 1st just before 10:00 p.m. and ordered two employees on the floor.

They stole a blue deposit bag containing approximately $3,000 in cash and personal checks. They were seen leaving in a dark colored vehicle.

These criminals have been armed with firearms and have entered the business quickly through the front door and immediately proceeded behind the counter to the register. If this happens, an employee should flee if possible but if it is not, he or she should cooperate.

No one has gotten hurt so far in these cases.

The department has solid investigative information they are following up on but they still want the local business community to be forewarned so as to be better prepared.

Attempted Burglary at Carlsbad Bank On November 14, 2012, at about 1:50am, Carlsbad Police Officers responded to an attempted burglary at the Chase Bank, 2219 Palomar Airport Road in Carlsbad, California.

One of the robbers was armed with what appeared to be a pump-action shotgun. If you recognize them please do not approach them. Call 911. You can also call the Sheriff's Department at (858) 565-5555.

Longtime pal, Mike Garcia, current President of the Escondido Police Officer’s Association, and a motorcycle cop, has been on medical leave for shoulder surgery involving the repair of a torn rotator cuff. Surgery was suc-

cessful and after a few more weeks of physical therapy and rehab, he hopes to return to duty. We have known Mike since he was a little tyke, living two doors down from us. His folks, Elmer and Gail Garcia, have been great neighbors and good friends. They, obviously, are glad Mike is on the mend.

Police received information that two suspects were using cutting tools in an attempt to force open an exterior ATM. The suspects abandoned their efforts and started to leave the area in a “lifted” red Ford pickup truck.

Time to greet a newcomer to this planet. Little Brooks Lucas Pietrek arrived on October 18th, thrilling mom and dad, Dr. Jim Pietrek and Kimmy Jane Pietrek. Brooks weighed in at a healthy 7 pounds 8.3 ounces, and was 20 1/2 inches.

Officers located the pickup truck, unoccupied, a short distance from the bank. Carlsbad Police officers, a San Diego Sheriff’s Department Air Support helicopter and a Carlsbad Police K-9 team searched the area for the suspects, but they were not located.

A cutting torch was found in the pickup truck. The pickup truck was seized as evidence and the investigation continues.

Witnesses say he walked to a teller on September 21st and showed a demand note indicating he was armed with a gun.

In the late 1980's I got involved in genealogy. As a result, I wound up writing four separate books on four separate branches of my family. The one book I have not been able to complete is that of the Davis family. The others, all Scandinavians, went back as far as 1526. I have since visited both Denmark and Norway and, in Norway, met my contemporary cousins.

I ran into one roadblock in the Davis history that I could not get past; finally, I threw up my hands in frustration and tossed in the towel. I gave up further studies of genealogy. Not before, however, learning of a fascinating character in my ancestral past.

As part of a district-wide goal of fiscal responsibility, the S.A.V.E. program aims to reduce energy use in all schools, which will save money that can be spent on other needs. District staff will measure, analyze and distribute energy use data to the S.A.V.E. patrols and site administrators. Throughout the year, the Business Services Department will offer awards for the lowest kilowatt hours per student at each elementary campus. On April 28, 2011, San Diego Gas & Electric awarded EUSD the prestigious “Excellence in Energy Saving Champion Award for Education” (K-12 Schools). EUSD has twentythree schools: 17 elementary, 5 middle, and 1 Community Day School. The ethnicity of the students is 65% Latino, 21% White, 2% African American, 3% Asian, and about 4% other.

School District Uses SAVE Energy Conservation Program The Save Amps, Voltage, and Electricity (S.A.V.E.) program launched again in September on every elementary campus in the Escondido Union School District. In its fourth year at EUSC, S.A.V.E. is a student-driven conservation program modeled on a successful program in Texas, and applies proven methods of teaching energy efficient habits while reducing school electric bills.

Participating student patrol teams check each campus every day for energy waste (lights on, open doors or windows, etc.) leaving either “tickets” or thank you notes.

S.A.V.E. gives students the opportunity to make a measureable difference in their schools, which has had beneficial impacts on their selfesteem, leadership, and ‘Cruising’ Cont. from Page 3 such as a cruise ship would offer. Pet Therapy Volunteers Needed – The Escondido Humane Society is seeking volunteers to join its Pet Therapy Program which is designed to enrich the lives of senior residents of nursing homes and assisted-living facilities, as requested.

Volunteers must have the ability to work with seniors and the disabled and a willingness to work with a variety of animals, to bring happiness and love to those residents. Native Americans -- in particular -- don't take too kindly to having their 'wings clipped.' One miserable day when my pupils first took in the filiments of early morning, I moaned in pain and cursed my existence.

Then, one magic day, a kind patient across the hall brought me my very first copy of Lyle E. Davis' THE PAPER. I read the chuckles and my laughter could be heard down the hospital halls.

It was that loud. Scared the cider out of my doctors who came running to my bedside!!! When they found out that the cause of my sudden 'turn in life' was a newspaper, well, they just stood and looked at each other! The orthopedist quipped, "Hell, maybe we should have this damned newspaper in all the patients' rooms!"

It was only a matter of time that the doctors discovered a small stack of THE PAPER under my pillow. When it came time for my injections on my stomach I began crying all over again, then one of the doctors got a bright idea: "Let him hold the stack of those newspapers." They did. And I hugged them and stopped crying.

The doctors knew.

The opthalmalogist who saved my eyes, the orthopedic surgeon who rebuilt my leg with titanium, the specialist who first discovered the hematoma that bled in my brain, well, in short, all of them knew . . . they knew that laughter can sometimes be the best medicine the world has ever known. And THE PAPER gave me that medicine each and every Thursday!

Once, when my physical therapist took me outside for the first time to practice walking, she asked me, "White Eagle, where do you want to go first?" That was an easy question for me. "Take me out to the front entrance, where the newspaper racks are," I nearly begged. She walked me slowly, holding onto me with her arms. When I got within 10' of the stack of papers, I excitedly said, "Now let me go, let me walk the rest of the way by

myself, please . . . " With great apprehension, she slowly let go and I slowly walked -- teetering now and then, which caused her to gasp -- and I slowly made my way, like a small child, and picked up my own copy of THE PAPER -by myself!

As melodramatic as that moment may seem to you, it was my first moment of liberation, my first donning of wings, and I heard myself say: "I want to live. I want to live.

I no longer wish to die!"

Holding that paper in my hands, I clutched it to my breast, then I yelled a Kumeyaay yell and clapped my hands with excitement!

Why am I telling you all this?

Well, because it was the turning point in my life. And I owe it to you (Evelyn Madison) and Lyle. You may not think it a big deal, but, trust me, it turned my life around. /s/White Eagle Editor’s Note:

San Marcos • Mayor Jim Desmond Nordahl Road Bridge opens just in time for holiday shopping season The newly constructed Nordahl Road Bridge and associated improvements opened to the public in mid-November --just in time for the holiday shopping season at one of San Marcos’ retail hot spots. This multi-agency project happened as a result of a joint effort between the cities of San Marcos, Escondido, SANDAG and Caltrans. These agencies recognized the urgency to improve this notoriously congested area and banded together to improve this area.

In addition to the new bridge, several improvements to the Nordahl and Montiel intersection were also completed. The City of San Marcos widened and modified the northeast corner of Nordahl Road and

Montiel Road to accommodate the new traffic lane configuration as part of the Nordahl Bridge project.

San Marcos also completed major intersection improvements at Nordahl and Montiel, such as modifying the configuration of the west side of Montiel Road at Nordahl Road and constructing a new signalized entrance to the Nordahl Marketplace to enhance traffic circulation.

These projects will help improve traffic flow by accommodating more vehicles per day. And there’s still more to come.

By spring 2013, the SR-78 Eastbound Auxiliary Lane Improvements will be complete. This project constructs an eastbound auxiliary lane on SR-78 between Woodland Parkway and Nordahl Road including an additional merging lane between the Barham Drive on-ramp and the Nordahl Road on-ramp.

Oceanside • Mayor Jim Wood Annual Holiday Home Tour Yes, ‘tis the season once again and the Friends of the Oceanside Public Library are pleased to present the annual Holiday Home Tour on Sunday, December 9th. For the last couple of weeks we have been talking about W8 (Windows 8) and Microsoft’s strategy to force retail PC buyers to accept W8 by limiting access to Windows 7.

Microsoft can’t restrict Win 7 sales to enterprise (business) users because surveys show 90% of businesses have no plan to implement W8, ever.

Retailers working frantically to clear their shelves of Win 7 desktop and notebook PCs results in some spectacular bargains on high quality Win 7 PCs. Last week we picked up 17 inch ASUS notebook PCs from a local Big Box retailer for nearly $100 under wholesale. Retailers will use “Black Friday” and Thanksgiving weekend sales to dump their remaining inventories of Win 7.

Thankful for California

Today, we celebrate Thanksgiving and give thanks for our blessings.

I am thankful to represent North County in the California State Senate and to be able to call this community my home.

North County residents, and all Californians, are fortunate to live in a state with such distinctive culture, unique geography and variety of industry. California is a global destination and ranked the 9th largest economy in the world.

However, international praise for California’s economy is often dwarfed by great concern for the state’s high unemployment, which has remained above 10 percent for nearly four years.

Government leadership can, and should, respond more effectively to this statistic.

Throughout the Vista and Win 7 eras Microsoft accommodated enterprise customers by permitting “MDR” (Microsoft downgrade rights). MDR allowed buyers of PCs with Vista Business or Win 7 Professional to have a free implementation (downgrade) of Win XP Professional. This strategy was a win/win for business and Microsoft. Businesses could still get new PCs with the tried and true Win XP and Microsoft could claim that sales of their new operating systems were booming. This practice of accommodating business users by allowing them to buy new PCs with old operating systems has been around for over twenty years. To date Microsoft has not announced any similar MDR program for W8.

We buy operating systems from distributors. We may pay more for our operating systems but Microsoft can’t force W8 operating system quotas on us. During the Vista years we built over a thousand PCs, but none with Vista. It wasn’t that we

couldn’t or wouldn’t build a PC with Vista; it was simply that none of our customers wanted one.

Today, and going forward, we will continue to build new PCs with whatever Windows operating system our customers want, Windows XP, Win 7 or W8. We will also continue to sell ASUS notebooks (the best) with Win 7 or Win 8.

Why am I a volunteer at the VA (Veterans Affairs Oceanside Outpatient Clinic) Initially it was brought to my attention that by volunteering at any community organization that would be a way and means of networking, suggesting one could meet a contact for possible job opportunity. I took that advice and choose to be a volunteer at the VA’s clinic.

The VA volunteer supervisor was seeking individuals to become greeters. This meant that I would stand outside the building entrance for about four-hours and warmly greet veterans and family members as they enter the clinic. Also as a greeter I would assist veterans by providing wheel chairs and accompany the Vets to the medical departments. Later during the day as they were leaving; with a smiling expression I would say “I hope you have a nice evening and thank you for your service to our country.” Many of them would acknowledge me (as a veteran-volunteer) and sincerely replied with a “Thank you for your assistance, its much appreciated” Networking now was the least of my own personal concerns, however, volunteering at the Oceanside VA clinic has a much more profound significance not only by welcoming and acknowledging these veterans for their service to our beloved country, but I became more aware of all the various military services these men and women served in as I noticed the military insignia’s on their caps and light-jackets they wear; some emblems indicating the war theaters they served and fought in.

Occasionally while a vet was waiting for the van transportation (that is available to pick them up and bring them back home; this is a free fee service) with some small talk I would mention

during the evenings I intently view at all of the war documentaries’ on the Military Channel so I could learn something from these authentic combat films and from time to time without any second thought a veteran would say: “You probably saw me in combat, when I was sixteen” (or older) and they would mentioned the war theater they were in during World War II. As we parted I’d repeat: “Take care, hope you have a nice evening.”

In my mind I’d think, ‘till we meet again,’ knowing some of them would return to the health care facility.

Being a volunteer has its rewards and it is my small contribution to the VA staffs along with it many military patients (from various war campaigns) whom are provided the best medical evaluations and treatments’ available. I know for a fact because I am a veteran.

Carlsbad Bank Robbery On Monday, November 19th, at 11:06 a.m., Carlsbad Police received a 911 call from US Bank at 7730 El Camino Real in Carlsbad, reporting a white male, 25-30 years old and approximately 220 lbs., robbed the bank.

The suspect fled the scene on foot in an unknown direction.
