It was a sunny day in March of 1964 when San Diego Mayor Frank Curran’s office was stormed by Beatles fans demonstrating and carrying signs that read, “Bring Us the Beatles!” It was a friendly demonstration with Mayor Curran laughing and smiling broadly. San Diego was not officially on the Beatles’ tour schedule for that summer and San Diego’s Beatles fan club president, Kathy Sexton, organized the protest which was recorded by the print media. The fact that the Beatles overlooked San Diego as a stopover point in their first 1964 U. S. concert tour did not sit well with Beatlemania fans here. Now, for the second straight year, the Beatles 1965 U. S. Tour schedule, again, did not include San Diego and Beatles fans here decided they had enough, and loudly vocalized their discontent with Mayor Curran’s office, entreating him to intervene on their behalf and bring the moptops to San Diego.
Little did anyone know at the time that a historic change of events would place San Diego on the world map and the Fab Four from Liverpool, England, would acquiesce to their rabid San Diego fan base.
The Beatles had initiated the immortal “British Invasion” and the world of music had never, before or since, seen anything like it. The revolutionary British group already had their first American television exposure on NBC’s widely popular “The Tonight Show,” on January 3, 1964. But, on that first televised occasion, The Tonight Show host, Jack Paar, only presented them via film footage. The Beatles would not make a ‘live appearance’ on American television until February 9, 1964, on The Ed Sullivan Show. It was there, on The Ed Sullivan Show, that they would make incredulous history. The Beatles would be watched by a staggering viewing audience of over 73-million strong, in over 23-million households across America. Such an expanse of humanity glued to their television sets would amount to 34% of the entire population of the United States. It was a massive, unprecedented, and historic televised event. scape of American pop culture and seduce millions, worldwide, to their every beck-and-call. Like the seductive sounds of the ancient Sirens of Greek mythology, rabid Beatles fans would charge their stage, dodging security personnel, scaling barriers and fences, screaming uncontrollably, with girls succumbing to a dead faint in the wake of pandemonium. By the hundreds, riot police often carried these star-struck fans --
their limp, unconscious bodies -to safety.
The world of entertainment had never before seen anything like Beatlemania. In city after city, John, Paul, George, and Ringo, became a lightning rod of sorts. This unlikely foursome, springing forth from unpretentious beginnings in Liverpool, England, would do nothing short of revo-

lutionizing the entire music industry.
However, tidbits of hidden fact and drama were masked behindthe-scenes, largely unknown to the general public, then and now. This hidden drama would find its way, from east to west, all the way to sunny San Diego.
Beginning in eastern America, the unstoppable Beatlemania tidal wave of popularity that was sweeping the music world was so formidable, and so overwhelming, that the Beatles received a (little known) request from the U. S. White in Washington, D. C., asking for a small bid of recognition from the mop-top foursome. In August of 1964, the White House press office asked the Beatles to agree to be photographed alongside the newly-installed American president, Lyndon B. Johnson, in his plans to lay a wreath on the grave of President John F. Kennedy, who had been assassinated less than 9 months prior to the Beatles landing in America. Beatles manager, Brian Epstein, politely refused the request on the grounds that it was not within the guidelines of the Beatles to accept “official invitations” from American political partisan factions during their initial tour. were waiting, watching, hoping, that the phenomenally popular Beatles would, somehow, see their way to perform in San Diego. Officially, the city of San Diego would not make the cut in the Beatles first 1964 massive tour schedule. However, this would all change the following year, due to unforeseen forces, quietly working behind the scenes at the time. A secret plan that would soon explode into reality – and San Diego would be in the crosshairs.
The mop-top Beatles were not only dazzling in their music and onstage performances, but, they had a rare gift of gab during their press conferences which catapulted them to even further, dizzying heights of popularity. It was almost too much to grant them -- they were not only the greatest iconic and culturally-influentially rock ‘n’ roll band in world history – they were also the fastest-on-thedraw with amusing adlibs that would make the most seasoned standup comic turn green with envy, especially since the Beatles improvised without cue cards. Reporter: “Time Magazine recently wrote an article putting down pop music. They described “Day Tripper” as being about a prostitute and “Norwegian Wood” as being about a lesbian. What was your thinking behind writing these
Reporter: “Ringo, why do you think you get more fan mail than anyone else in the group?” Ringo Starr: “I don’t know. I suppose it’s because more people write me.”
Reporter: “How do you find America?” John Lennon: “You turn left at Greenland.” Reporter: “Is it true none of you can read or write music?” Paul McCartney: “None of us can read or write music. The way we work is like, we just whistle. John will whistle at me and I’ll whistle back at him.”
Reporter: “They think your haircuts are un-American.” John Lennon: “Well, it was very observant of them because we aren’t Americans, actually.”
The Beatles never needed comedy writers. They wore their humor like a second skin.
The Fab Four’s wit and cutting sarcasm became so legendary as to have reporters not wanting to miss out on any Beatles press interviews. Such as in these actual scenarios. Journalist: “What did you say when your airplane’s engine began smoking as you landed today?”
Ø Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit; wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.
Ø A diplomat is someone who can tell you to go to hell in such a way that you will look forward to the trip.
Ø To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism. To steal from many is research.

Beatles humor would play-out, especially in San Diego, where San Diego reporters would bring out the best in the Beatles’ arsenal of wit and improvised retorts. The Beatles would fall in love with San Diego’s bayside locale and beach atmosphere, but, we’re getting ahead of our story. In the meantime, the Beatles had opened the floodgates for other British bands to stream into America, such as The Rolling Stones, Herman’s Hermits, The Animals, Peter and Gordon, The Who, to give a brief sampling. Music historians would later credit this era of new musical phenomena as: “Creating a new counter-culture on both sides of the Atlantic.” Beatlemania and the British Beat would eventually spread around the planet.

The San Diego Chapter, United States Daughters of 1812, (USD812) Marty Sommercamp, President, held their bi-annual meeting at the San Diego Yacht Club. The members were privileged to hear retired Marine Colonel Nico Marcolongo and his wife, Lisa, share their story of dealing with PTSD. They both work hard in the community offering support and helping families deal with PTSD. Part of the program was a viewing of Sesame Street that the Marcolongos, along with other families, starred in to help explain how children cope with changes in the family when injuries to a parent occur. The program covered both seen and unseen injuries such as loss of limbs, brain and cosmetic injuries, and PTSD. A certificate and honorarium were presented to the Marcolongos by Vice

other British imports continued to follow in their wake in increasing numbers, completely dominating the American music pop charts as never before: The Dave Clark Five, The Yardbirds, the Zombies, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Chad and Jeremy, and other British powerhouses.
Within this constellation of new emerging British rock stars, the Beatles held center court as the most dynamic and the most popular the world had, heretofore, witnessed. On the cusp of immortality, and unprecedented success, they set new, seemingly impossible, standards for their contemporaries. For example, during their second U. S. Tour, they filled New York’s Shea Stadium with an astonishing 55,000 fans on August 15, 1965. It was the first time in human history that such a large outdoor stadium had ever been used for such a purpose.
Three thousand miles away, there remained unseen, influential force at work in the city of San Diego that would, incredibly, place California’s city by the bay, on the front burner of the Beatles recognition of hot-spot venues and, thus, forever change the course of music history.
It was during the reign of their second 1965 U. S. Tour that the Beatles would, unexpectedly,

San Diego was overlooked in the Beatles’ first 1964 Tour and, again, in 1965 when their 1965 North American Tour Schedule was officially announced. That would later change on June 7, 1965 when San Diego was, surprisingly and suddenly, added to the Beatles’ American tour dates.
Thanks to the persistent efforts of two Los Angeles promoters, Allen Tinkley and Louis Robin, the Fab Four were successfully booked for their only San Diego concert appearance, formally slated for 8 p.m. Saturday, August 28, 1965, at Balboa Stadium. But, what greatly greased the wheels for promoters Tinkley and Robin’s efforts and helped opened the door for them to succeed in bringing the Beatles to San Diego came from a most unlikely source: Mexico.
A little-known fact was that Beatles manager, Brian Epstein, had planned a Beatles concert in Mexico City, to take place at the Palacio de los Deportes Stadium (Sports Palace Stadium) – but the plan was nixed by the Mexican government. Mexican officials believed the British rock group to be a bad influence on their youth – most of whom were already rabid Beatles fans. The official reason given by the Mexican government for the cancellation of any Beatles con-

The article included an exclusive interview with Paul McCartney in a retrospection piece looking back at hidden elements and power-posturing behind the Mexican ban on England’s Fab Four. Writer, Martinez, is also host of a weekly radio program and is co-creator of a documentary film titled, “Waiting for Los Bitles” (Waiting for the Beatles), which further investigated and uncovered official information not widely known, i.e. why the Beatles were banned in Mexico (stated above). tioned favorably, and would eventually fulfill an indelible part of Beatles immortality. It would prove to be a most historic date and the proceedings would plunge San Diego into the world’s limelight and into musical history.
However, backroom drama and behind-the-scenes backstabbing would continue to unfold, in spades, for the city of San Diego. San Diego’s ensuing, and hidden, internal fighting leading to the Beatles concert at Balboa Stadium would lead to one of the most colorful and captivating chapters in Beatlemania history. Little did anyone know that San Diego would become the battleground of a vicious media war over the rights to promote the Beatles at San Diego’s Balboa Stadium. This tooth-and-nail media in-fighting would proof to be a death-struggle of sorts, yet, it would remain, largely, behind the scenes and curtained-off to the general public, and Beatles fans. Much of what happened in this media warfare remains largely unknown, to this day. The media combatants at the time involved popular San Diego radio stations KGB and KCBQ. The two rival radio stations viciously competed for the rights to officially promote the

Vehicle Pursuit - Carlsbad
On Wednesday, October 25th at 6:16 p.m., a Police Officer for the City of Carlsbad Police Department attempted to stop a 2002 Ford Pickup, which was pulling a trailer, after receiving citizen’s calls that the vehicle had collided with multiple vehicles on El Camino Real at Alga Road in Carlsbad, California. The vehicle failed to stop for the police officer’s emergency lights and siren at Faraday Avenue and El Fuerte and a pursuit ensued. The vehicle continued southbound on El Fuerte, eastbound on Palomar Airport Road, and continued Northbound on Melrose Drive at a slow rate of speed. Carlsbad Police Officers utilized a tire deflation device to deflate the suspect’s tires at Melrose Drive and Faraday Avenue in the City of Vista. The suspect then pulled into a parking lot, located in the 2400 block of Melrose Drive in Vista, where he exited his vehicle and was taken into custody. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the traffic collisions that had occurred. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was identified as
Tuarino Martinez from Vista, a 39 year old Hispanic male. He was arrested for a felony hit and run, failure to yield to an emergency police vehicle, and felony driving while under the influence of alcohol.
He was transported to the Vista Detention Facility where he was booked. The investigation into the traffic collisions are ongoing. Carjacking in Carlsbad
On Friday, October 27th at 8:37 p.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department was called to the area of Estrella De Mar and Alga Road. The caller, a 22 year old male, reported that he had his vehicle stolen from him by an unknown suspect. The suspect was described as an unknown race male wearing unknown clothing. Officers responded to the area and located the victim. Investigating officers found that the victim had his vehicle forcibly taken from him as he started to enter his vehicle. The victim stated that he had unlocked his vehicle at the time into a highly successful business model.
She was a competitive swimmer in high school and college - and her competitive spirit served her well in the business world. Are you as amused at the GEICO ads as I am? Absolutely brilliant!
They have, in my judgment, one of the most clever advertising agencies in the world! GEICO and Budweiser ads are brilliantly written and produced.
The current GEICO ad featuring the football referee in a high class restaurant ordering “Tater Tots” always draws a chuckle from me. And I still remember the farmer and “E-I-E-I-O” - a classic!
It happens that a certain young (and very beautiful) lady, Dawn Grant, is the GEICO Agency Owner, located in San Marcos and serving all of North San Diego County.
Fascinating lady. Not only pleasant to look upon but smart. Lots of business savvy . . . took a small agency, added staff, trained them, and built the agency
of the contact and an unknown male put a blunt object to the back of victim’s head while demanding the victim’s keys. The victim gave the suspect the keys to the vehicle and the suspect fled the scene.
The victim sustained no injuries from the incident. The vehicle taken is described as a gold Honda Pilot with a California license plate #7VHB799. Officers searched the area but were unable to locate the suspect and vehicle. Raising Cane in Vista
A new restaurant, ‘Raising Cane’ will take the place formerly occupied by Famous Dave’s in Vista Village. Raising Cane, a drive-thru, chicken-fingers chain, will go up in its place. The Vista City Council voted 41 this week to allow the request for a drive-thru in Vista Village. The building has sat empty for more than two years. The builder’s owner had to overcome resistance from the City Council but succeeded.
I am persuaded that Emergency Room physicians are probably the best diagnosticians around.
I have witnessed them repeatedly accurately diagnosis a condition, often within a matter of 15 minutes or less. Several years ago they caught on right away that I had developed an early stage of Shingles . . . they caught it before the dreaded blisters formed so I was able to treat it and avoid the blister patches that so often accompany that malady. Still one of the most painful illnesses I ever had but it would have been worse had the ER doctor not caught it right away; another time Evelyn had a terrible pain in her upper body. The ER physician, within 15 minutes, diagnosed a pulled muscle in her back. It was treated . . . voila! Pain went away in a matter of days!

This past Monday I had a little ambulance ride from Kaiser Urgent Care in San Marcos to Palomar West Hospital. Chest pains. ER docs at Urgent Care determined I had not had a heart attack but wanted the ER docs at Palomar to run blood tests and x-rays to ensure that I wasn’t on the verge of having a heart attack. Always better to be safe than sorry.

“I hate that question,” sez Dr. Steve. “We know it’s not a heart attack, nor pneumonia, nor cracked ribs, nor a blood clot on the lungs . . . we know a lot of what it is not. It’s possible stress is causing the problem.” (It’s a mild pain - maybe a 1-2 on a scale of 1-10 . . . but fairly constant).
Could be. 0I’ve had more than a fair share of stress recently, several family members with serious health issues and I was the go-to guy to deal with transportation, overseeing medications, and just keeping an eye on the patients. I’m a type II diabetic, I’ve gained some weight, I’ve let myself get out of condition, and I’ve got some stressful situations. Add them all up and it’s quite possible the stress might manifest itself in a chronic mild chest pain. That’s the assumption for now, anyway.
The good news? No heart attack. Nothing serious seems to be wrong with me. So you’re stuck with me good news for me . . for you? Maybe.

San Diego Beatles concert, which eventually would lead to legal litigation against one another (KGB vs. KCBQ). During the onset, the Beatles’ concert promoters (Allen Tinkley and Louis Robin) had asked both rival radio stations to submit their best proposals with a submission dateline of June 10, 1965. KGB and KCBQ pulled out all the stops in their ensuing competition to win the (official) Beatles air-time rights and the honor of introducing them live, on stage, at San Diego’s Balboa Stadium, truly a most historic musical event for San Diego.
The ensuing “pitches” and various proposal ideas by both KGB and KCBQ made their way to promoters, Louis Robin and Allen Tinkley. Lee Bartell, KCBQ General Manager, created a fictional DJ character by the name of “Lord Tim of Liverpool,” (real name, Tim Hudson), who paraded as a fictional Englishman who claimed to be a personal friend of the Beatles. In addition, KCBQ promised promoters a full sevenweek-long promotion in newspapers, Beatles gift give-a-ways, and press conferences. KGB’s Bill Drake upped the ante by offering Beatles’ promoters the moon, stating that KGB would not only offer carte blanche coverage in every conceivable fashion for the upcoming Beatles
megastars. This KCBQ major coup against KGB was almost an outright death blow between the competing media, in favor of KCBQ, which now had inneraccess to personal interviews with the Beatles, all of which would be aired, exclusively, on KCBQ airwaves. Adding to ticket-sales confusion, KCBQ publicized their own radio station phone number as a source to purchase Beatles concert tickets. This caused confusing information for KGB, the official concert sponsor, and also for radio listeners who wished to purchase tickets. All these proceedings culminated in KGB filing a lawsuit against rival radio station, KCBQ.
concert but, in summation, the promoters would, in essence, sit in the owner’s chair at KGB and drive the promotion scheme as they see fit. The offers from both competing radio stations were so enticing that promoters Robin and Tinkley offered a joint sponsorship by both KGB and KCBQ. The stations, mutually, wanted no part of each other. Rivalry was too, acrimoniously, deeply planted. Finally, on June 15, KGB Radio (which, incidentally, had higher ratings than KCBQ), was signed to officially promote and sponsor the Beatles San Diego Concert, on August 28, 1965, at Balboa Stadium. Nonetheless, KCBQ hung on with their “Lord Tim of Liverpool” publicity, grabbing radio listeners away from KGB, which was now the official sponsor of the Beatles upcoming concert. The ongoing feud was not about to go away, quietly. KCBQ stayed on with their Lord Tim persona, which was stealing the thunder from KGB. And KCBQ’s Lord Tim was gaining momentum in fan popularity. Lord Tim was the full irresistible package: he was young, good looking, spoke in an English accent and, for good measure, sported bell-bottom pants and Beatles haircut. All this drove the Beatles-appointed radio sponsor, KGB, to have kittens. The on-air feud heightened to a climax when KCBQ Radio managed to obtain full permission from the Beatles tour management to allow Lord Tim to travel with the English
Despite this behind-the-scenes drama, San Diego’s one-andonly Beatles concert commenced at San Diego’s Balboa Stadium. Contradicting ticket information and bitter in-fighting between two warring radio stations created an element of confusion which hurt public ticket sales, in the process. Also, the lastminute addition of San Diego to the Beatles North American Tour Date Schedule gave promoters a shorter period of time to promote the event. San Diego’s only Beatles concert attendance could have proven better without the KGB-KCBQ media drama. Out of 27,041 tickets, only about 17, 013 were sold, leaving an estimated 10,000 empty seats. Tickets were priced at $3.50, $4.50, and $5.50. Some fence-hoppers were
successful in seeing the concert, free.
Nevertheless, the Beatles were already superstars and miraculously still heading to added, stratospheric heights of fame. (When the Rolling Stones first played San Diego in the latter part of 1964, several months before the Beatles, the Rolling Stones concert was at the much smaller Balboa Park Bowl, and only sold a few hundred tickets at less than $5 each. When the concert started, doors were just opened – for free admission - to hundreds waiting outside, just to fill the venue for the Rolling Stones.)
The Beatles legacy is beyond comparison by any standard. They were the wittiest, the most talented, the most influential, and have sold the most records in history to the point of simply being beyond the reach of mere mortals. In regards to matching their celebrity, one music critic said it best: “How do you hold a candle to the sun?” Even the mighty TIME magazine bowed in their direction, citing them as among the most influential forces in the twentieth-century.

press conference was turned into a worldwide stage, with great expectations for another rousing session of jocular exchanges as was customary in past Beatles interviews. San Diego and the Beatles did not disappoint.
Over 100 journalists and reporters showed up on August 28, 1965, for a Beatles pre-concert press conference. The four mop-tops stole the show with spontaneous wit and clever retorts. Even other celebrities, such as singing sensation, Joan Baez, dared not miss a Beatles media event to personally witness the Beatles off-the-cuff humor. Here is a sampling that was picked up by wire services worldwide from the Beatles’ San Diego question-and-answer session and replayed around the world: Reporter: “You’ve admitted to being agnostics. Are you also irreverent as had been said?” John Lennon: “We are agnostics, so there is no point in being irreverent.” Reporter: “Where did you find your sound?” George Harrison: “We don’t find sounds. We make them.”
Reporter: “It has been stated that you are disinterested in politics, that politically you have a certain apathy.” John Lennon: “We’re not disinterested in politics -- it’s just that politicians are disinteresting.” Reporter: “Do you date much?” Ringo Starr: “What are you doing tonight?” Reporter: “How does your music excite girls so much?” Paul McCartney: “If we knew, we’d form another band and be managers.” It becomes increasingly difficult to comprehend that over 52 years have passed since the Beatles performed at San Diego’s Balboa Stadium. It was true history-in-the-making.
Music critic, Richie Unterberger, wrote in All Music that the Beatles are: “The greatest and most influential act of the rock era, and introduced more innovations into popular music than any other rock band of the 20th century.”
In Rolling Stone Magazine’s “Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll,” the editors defined the Beatles’ influence thusly: “The impact of the Beatles – not only on rock & roll but on all of Western culture – is simply incalculable. Smart, idealistic, playful, irreverent, eclectic. They proved that rock & roll could embrace a limitless variety of harmonies, structures, and sounds.” In the end, the Beatles meant different things to different people. Brian Wilson of the immortal Beach Boys band said,
“There’s no outdoing the Beatles.” Comedy legend, Jerry Seinfeld, opined, “The Beatles created something that never trailed off. What a gift that was to their fans. If you’re into the Beatles, you loved them from beginning to end.” Even the towering genius of Steve Jobs was impacted by them; he enjoyed their music as well as their commitment to each other, though at times, it was turbulent: “My model for business is the Beatles: they were four guys that kept each other’s negative tendencies in check; they balanced each other. And the total was greater than the sum of the parts.”
There is something haunting and lingering that John Lennon said before he died. Something universal and beautiful that travels a deep route into the inner recesses of the human soul: “A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality.” For many Beatles fans, dreaming together as Lennon noted, brings souls closer together in common harmony. Just ask Beatles fan, Robyn Hitchcock, who says: “So, whenever I hear the Beatles, I always feel I’ve got a lot in common with everybody else.” Now, that’s real magic.
One by one they are leaving us to ourselves. First John left us in 1980. Then George went too, in 2001. Only two remain now, Paul and Ringo. But to the end, they will never relinquish their unconquerable humor and resilient wit. As Paul said regarding rumors of his own death: “I am alive and well and unconcerned about the rumors of my death. But if I were dead, I would be the last to know.”
Combating the Drug Epidemic
Last week I participated in a prescription drug abuse forum at Valley Center High School. Representatives from North County Mental Health, the Sheriff’s Department, the federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and the F.B.I. discussed this growing problem. My initial experience with this issue was during my involvement with the San Diego County Opioid Task force as a Escondido City Councilmember earlier this decade. As a parent, I was shocked to learn about drug abuse in young people, how to recognize it and what to do about it. This information must be available to all parents.
In this regard, I introduced AB 182, the Heroin and Opioid Public Education (HOPE) Act, requiring the State Department of Health to develop a comprehensive education program on heroin and opioid abuse to help the public identify danger signs and find the resources to get needed help. Each October my office participates in Red Ribbon Week, which seeks to educate children about the dangers posed by illicit drug use and the "Just Say No to
Drugs" campaign. Thousands of elementary and middle school students throughout the 75th Assembly District receive Red Ribbon certificates from me each year encouraging them to live drug free lives.
I am also participating on the coordinating committee of a 5year Stanford Neurosciences Institute initiative to share ideas between scientists and policymakers focused on drug addiction. This national initiative tasks members to develop plans to provide ongoing advice and guidance to maximize the effectiveness of the latest research on public policy. These are just a few small steps in the ongoing struggle against drug abuse. Helping to save just one person will make the effort worthwhile. Minority Floor Leader Marie Waldron, R-Escondido, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.
Yes, only two members of the Beatles remain. When they, also, leave us – we will be left only with their music legacy, and memories of sweet yesterdays. To rejoice that we once had them in our midst. Their likes of which will never pass our way again. Like they once passed our way, here in sunny San Diego over half a century ago. And played their music under the stars.

The Toolmakers of Nazi Germany – Part II
For years during the forties and fifties a popular American company used the sales phrase: “Better living through chemistry,” (Dupont) But, during the two world wars, chemistry played a large part as a destructive weapon.
Chemicals have been used for more than 100 years and those used during the first and second world wars were made with popular-labeled products on both sides of the battle front.
The company that made everything from aspirin to pesticides provided products used by both the Allied Forces as well as the Central Powers during World War I, and the Nazis during World War II.
Bayer was part of IG Farben, which at the time was the world's largest chemical and pharmaceutical company, from 1925 to 1952. and then again became an independent company. Bayer became part of IG Farben in 1925. In 1938, leading up to World War II, the IG Farben chemical conglomeration, which Bayer was a part, had 218,000 employes world wide. IG Farben was controversial both on the far left and on the far right, partially for the same reasons, related to the size and the Jewish background of several of its key leaders and major shareholders. Far-right newspapers of the 1920s and early 1930s accused IG Farben of being an "international capitalist Jewish company.” The liberal and business-friendly German People's Party was the most pronounced supporter of the new company, whereas not a single member of the management of IG Farben before 1933 supported the Nazi Party. A third, of the IG Farben supervisory board was Jewish. There is some evidence of "secret contributions to the Nazi war chest" in 1931 and 1932. IG Farben ended up being the "largest single contributor" to the successful Nazi election of Hitler’s campaign of 1933.
In 1941, an investigation exposed a "marriage" cartel between John D. Rockefeller's United States-based Standard Oil Co. and IG Farben. It also brought new evidence concerning complex price and marketing agreements between DuPont, a major investor in and producer of leaded gasoline, United States Industrial Alcohol Company and its subsidiary, Cuba Distilling Co. IG Farben had bought the patent for the pesticide Zyklon B, which later was used to gas thousands of Jewish prisoners. The gas,
ironically, had been invented by the Nobel Prize-winning German Jewish chemist Fritz Haber's research group.
During World War II, IG Farben used slave labor in factories that it built adjacent to German concentration camps, notably Auschwitz, and the sub-camps of the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp. IG Farben purchased prisoners for human experimentation of a sleep-inducing drug and later reported all test subjects died. IG Farben employees frequently said, "If you don’t work faster, you’ll be gassed." IG Farben held a large investment in Degesch which produced Zyklon B. IG Farben facilities were frequent bombing targets of the Oil Campaign of World War II, and up to 1941, there were five Nazi German plants that produced synthetic fuel.
Due to IG Farben's Nazi entanglement, after the war it was considered by the Allies to be too morally corrupt to be allowed to continue to exist. But, IG Farben had large entanglement with American companies, notably with the successors of Standard Oil. IG Farben was modelled after and broken up into several companies. In the late 1940s, IG Farben was being rebuilt in the western zones and continuing doing business. In 1951, the company was split into its original constituent companies. The four largest quickly bought the smaller ones.
One of Bayer’s discoveries was heroin. In 1898, Bayer trademarked and marketed it as a cough suppressant and non-addictive substitute for morphine. But Bayer's first and best-known household product is aspirin.
Among other products produced by IG Farben include the nerve agent Sarin. And the German war machine kept fuel-hungry vehicles and airplanes running with a crucial product: synthetic fuel, made from lignite coal using the liquefaction process. The IG Farben Trial, was the sixth of the 12 Nuremberg war crimes trials. The defendants, all had been directors of IG Farben. Of the 24 defendants, 13 were found guilty. All were sentenced to prison, but received early release. Most were quickly restored to their directorships, and some were awarded the Federal Cross of Merit.
Since World War II, Bayer's continued primary areas of business include human and veterinary pharmaceuticals; consumer healthcare products; agricultural chemicals and biotechnology products; and high value polymers. Today, the company is a component of the Euro Stoxx 50 stock market index. The Bayer company's motto today is "science for a better life." Today, popular consumer products such as Agfa and BASF, with Bayer aspirin-type products remain.
In 1995, Helge Wehmeier, the head of Bayer Corporation, publicly apologized to Elie Wiesel for the company's involvement in the Holocaust at a lecture in Pittsburgh. Too little too late.

O’side Turkey Trot Expected to Draw Trotters from 48 States Move Your Feet Before You Eat® More than 10,000 runners and walkers from 48 states are expected to flock to scenic Oceanside to “move their feet before they eat” at the 12th Annual Pacific Marine Credit Union O’side Turkey Trot and kids run, set for Thanksgiving Day, November 23. Featuring scenic tours of this classic California beach community, the 5-Mile and 5K runs will kick off at 7am and 8:20am respectively, starting on historic Highway 101 at the Civic Center (330 N. Coast Hwy) and finishing on The Strand just south of the iconic Oceanside Pier. A 5K walk begins at 8:45am. All races feature live entertainment along the courses.
“The morning run and walk has quickly become an annual Thanksgiving tradition for many families, not only for local San Diego County residents but for those who travel here for the holiday weekend,” said Kathy Kinane, race director and president of Kinane Events. The family-oriented event also includes one- to ¼-mile kids runs starting at 10:30am, an expo and a costume
contest. “The primary objective of the Turkey Trot is to get families outside and active together on a day that people routinely stay in,” said Kinane.
Runners and walkers also have the opportunity to form a team. More than 50 teams participated in the 2016 event, including Team Austin Bice, with 514 team members. Team Austin Bice participates in memory of Austin Bice, a 22-year-old senior at San Diego State University, who went to Madrid, Spain, to study international business in January of 2011, and was found dead in the city's Manzaneres River. Bice was a participant in the PMCU O'side Turkey Trot and loved the race. The three teams with the most members receive $100 gift certificates from 333 Pacific, a steak/seafood restaurant in Oceanside. Entrants can designate part of their entry fees to support local schools
and non-profits. The race also directly benefits the Move Your Feet Before You Eat Foundation, a charity founded by Kinane Events to promote physical activity among youth. Poway Symphony Orchestra Starts New Season – On November 19, at 4pm, the Poway Symphony Orchestra will start the next performance season with a program of two masterpieces for full orchestra: the "New World Symphony" by Dvorak and the famous cello concerto by the same composer. Service Award - Alida Woodward, Regent, and Charla Boodry, 1st vice regent, of the Santa Margarita Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, presented the DAR Community Service Award to Angela Kennedy Perez. This award is presented to an individual or organization for outstanding volunteering in cultural, educational, humanitarian, patriotic, historical, citizenship, or environmental conservation efforts. Mrs. Perez is an R.N. by profession but her volunteer works are far-reaching. She is a voice in advocacy work at the state and national levels and recently was part of a delegation to Washington DC to speak about mental health issues of veterans. She volunteers medical services at local fundraising marathons to help the less fortunate, homeless shelters, children’s programs with incarcerated parents, and sober living homes. Last week, Escondido hosted the Western Regional Diversity conference, drawing attendees from all over Southern California. The focus was on promoting the innovation that happens within businesses when they diversifying their workforce. Fabulous speakers from a variety of industries participated. It made me think about City government. BLESSING THE PETS
Over their years most people have pets. Lyle, our editor and owner of the PAPER, has a thing about dogs. He loves them, defends them, wants to save them, and encourages people to adopt them. I love pets, too. I have a pet tortoise. The tortoise isn’t a warm cuddling creature that wants to sit on my lap and have me pet him, but definitely wants to be with me, especially when I am working in the garden. He follows me around, enjoys a pat on his head and a touch under his chin, and seems to like it when I talk to him. One might think it strange to hear me say, “I love him” or even think he loves me. One thing I do know, if either of us wasn’t
Recently, I had an experience witnessing just how much people love their pets and receive love in return. I was asked to share in a pet blessing ceremony in honor of the founder of the Franciscan Order, St. Francis of Assisi, who was a lover of animals and went around blessing them. There is an annual ceremony sponsored by various organizations to bless the animals, especially pets. One might think it a bit strange at first, but my experience confirmed the need to include God and His care on behalf of both the owners and their pets. The words of appreciation expressed the deep care and love people have for their pets and receive from them. Personally, it was a blessing to me in sharing with both the owners and their pets.
It is a ministry, which has a place in the Kingdom of God, at least on this earth. Beyond this earth, who knows? However, here on earth, all animals are creatures of God’s act of creation, and are to be loved, cared for, enjoyed, shared, and blessed.

Wildfires Remind Us To Be Prepared
The wildfires in Northern California are a reminder that a wildfire could flare up any moment, especially when gusty Santa Ana winds are expected along with low humidity. Watching the wildfires north of us is a reminder that Vista residents should sign up for San Diego County’s free notification system called Alert San Diego. This regional notification system is used to alert the public during evacuations and emergencies. Our Vista Fire Chief, Jeff Hahn says it best, “Simply put, this type of notification is one of the most important tools in being informed about an incident near you or if you

“Believe in Yourself ” – This Fall, back to school clothing will be provided to girls around the country by the Believe in Yourself Project. Each back to school season, there is so much pressure on young girls to stay in style, with very little consideration for the reality that many girls from low-income families cannot afford new clothes. Their resulting embarrassment can inhibit their ability to attend social and extracurricular actives, causing them to miss out on important milestones and further lowering their self confidence.
Believe in Yourself (www.believeinyourself.org) is a foundation launched in January 2017 that provides brandnew, never-worn dresses to lowincome girls around the country, while at the same time works to promote positive body image, to reduce cyber bullying, and to inspire girls to believe in themselves and their dreams. The core of JIT’s philosophy is that the most critical gap for youth in foster care has been a lack of connection so the solution is resources provided along with lasting relationships to caring volunteers and peers. Wells noted that the challenge grant is also an opportunity to mobilize JIT’s network of support. In order to receive the full $1,000,000 grant, JIT must secure matching three-year written commitments. The deadline for the first match of $333,000 is September 30, 2017, with $667,000 in additional 3year written commitments by June 30, 2018. The RTIP is a multi-billion dollar, multi-year program of proposed projects for major transportation projects in the San Diego Region. Transportation projects funded with federal, state, TransNet, and the San Diego transportation sales tax program must be included in an approved RTIP. The RTIP covers five fiscal years and incrementally implements San Diego Forward: The Regional Plan, the longrange transportation plan for the San Diego region. The current Regional Plan was approved by the SANDAG Board of Directors at its meeting on October 9, 2015. On September 23, 2016, the SANDAG Board of Directors adopted the final 2016 RTIP. The City of San Marcos recommends programming the 2016 RTIP projects that are necessary to be amended as they are either regionally significant, capacity increasing projects or are projects that are being recommended for TransNet revenues. All projects programmed with TransNet funds meet all the requirements of the TransNet Extension Ordinance and accommodate travel for pedestrians and bicyclists.
