The County’s Office of Homeless Solutions in partnership with the safe parking lot operator Dreams for Change will provide an update on the North Magnolia Safe Parking project located in Unincorporated El Cajon.

The County of San Diego Department of Homeless Solutions and Equitable Communities, Office of Homeless Solutions, and partner, Dreams for Change, are hosting the session.

The County is also considering small housing projects that would give shelter to the homeless. The Shelters include : • Sleeping Cabins: Individual/couple units w/bed, desk, A/C and lockable door.

• Safe Parking: Safe, legal location to sleep in one’s vehicle or RV (depending on the site).

• Congregate Shelter: A group site similar to a dormitory with shared living spaces and no private bedrooms.

Photos are examples of homeless shelters.

• Safe Storage/Services: A place to safely store belongings and access services/support that does not include housing on site.

Update on Riverford Road Proposed Shelter in Lakeside Riverford Road proposed shelter site in Lakeside has been removed for consideration by the Lakeside Water District who owns the property.

SHORT SHORTS Don’t wake the sea lions It can get pretty crowded at the balmy beaches of La Jolla, CA and, recently, the crowd at La Jolla Cove got a wakeup call when a beachgoer accidentally roused a group of sea lions, reports the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. Apparently, the sleeping mammals were awakened by a visitor who had gotten too close to them.

She was frightened and started running away, the sea lions allegedly ran after her, which in turn caused a panicked mass evacuation of sunbathers. The sea lions eventually returned to the water and no one was hurt.

Another fish story Quite a bit of excitement at this year’s Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo, says the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. April Jones and her family of Saraland, AL were startled when a five foot, 400 pound eagle ray suddenly

jumped out of the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and landed in their boat, glancing off of April’s shoulder. According to her husband, Jeremy, “She starts screaming, I hear stuff breaking and flopping, my grandpa falls into me, I look back, this ray is laying in the back of the boat.” Once things settled down they headed for the Dauphin Island Sea Lab to get help returning the creature back into the water. Their son, eight-year-old Gunner, described the incident as “kind of cool.”

Each year the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, Amer-

ica’s oldest dog show, celebrates the world’s “most perfect dogs,” says the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. But, what about the not-so-perfect hounds? They get their chance for international attention at the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest in Petaluma, CA.-- an annual event that dates back to the 1970s.

Mr. Happy Face, a Chinese crested-chihuahua mix, won this year’s competition on June 24. In a bio for the event, the pooch’s owner Janeda Banelly of Arizona described Happy Face as a “humble soul” and “an example, in subtle ways, to help humans realize that even old dogs need love and a family too.”

ear Rusty: I am 70 years old and just started receiving my Social Security benefits about 4 months ago and I get close to $3700 per month. My wife is 65 years old and worked sporadically over the years so is entitled to her own benefits. If we applied under her account, she would get around $300 a month. If she

Dear Uncertain: Your wife can apply for both her own SS retirement benefit (from her own lifetime work record) and her spousal benefit from you, at the same time. In fact, when she applies for her own Social Security benefit, since you are now collecting your benefits she will be automatically deemed to be filing also for her spousal benefit from you.

Your wife’s Social Security payment will actually consist of two elements – her own earned benefit and a “spousal boost” to bring her to her spousal entitlement.

So, when she applies for her own SS benefit, she will also get a spousal boost to

make her payment equal to what she is entitled to as your spouse. She can apply by calling Social Security at your local office or calling the national service center at 1.800.772.1213 to request an appointment. She also has the option to apply for her benefits online at www. ssa.gov which is, by far, the most efficient way. To apply online, your wife will need to first create her personal “my Social Security” online account, which is easy to do at www.ssa.gov/myaccount.

When your wife fills out the application for her benefits, she will be able to identify you as her spouse, and she should use the “Remarks” section of the application to emphasize that she wishes to receive her spousal benefits as well.

Just for your awareness, your wife’s spousal benefit will be based on your full retirement age (FRA) benefit amount, not your age 70

amount, and if she claims at age 65 her benefits will be reduced because she hasn’t yet reached her own full retirement age (which is 66 years and 4 months if she was born in 1956). Your wife’s personal benefit will be reduced by .556% for each month earlier than her FRA that she claims, and her spousal boost will be reduced by .694% for each month earlier than her FRA she claims. So, if your wife claims her benefit before her full retirement age, her payment will be less than 50% of your FRA benefit amount.

I N S P I R AT I O N To ask or not ask is no option

by Dr. James L. Snyder ou would think I would have learned all I needed to learn at my age. However, each day I learn something I did not know the day before. So much of my new learning is still connected to being married to The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage.

I know, for example, that she is not soliciting information when she asks a question. So many times, I forget and walk into that trap.

Last week, for instance, The Gracious of the Parsonage looked out the living room window and sighed very deeply and then looking at me said, “Why is it so hot out there today?”

Under normal circumstances, but what is normal these days, I would have realized this was not a question to be answered. But, without thinking, I looked at her and said, “It’s Florida, and it’s the middle of the summer, and that’s why it’s so hot out there.”

For me, it is not easy to know when she is asking and when she is not asking a question.

So to answer one of her questions means I have to give her an opinion of mine. But, of course, that is never on the table.

Recently we had an appointment across town, so my wife drove, and I sat in the passenger side. The traffic was heavy, and people were driving rather crazy. At one intersection, a car almost ran into us, and on my part, I lost all my heebie-jeebies.

My wife said, “What is wrong with people today? Why are they so crazy?”

I cleared my throat, and then she looked at me and said, “That was not a question I want you to answer. So keep your opinion to yourself.”

I then put on one of my typical smiles, and winked at her.

I looked out the window and started to chuckle. I did not realize I was chuckling; it just came naturally.

Not a good thing to do in this situation.

“What are you chuckling about?” she said.

“Do you think that is funny?” she said with both hands on her hips and staring at me.

Now I am in one of those marital dilemmas. Is she asking a question she wants me to answer, or did she set me up?

I then remembered that a woman asking you questions is not soliciting an answer. If only I could remember that, I could keep myself out of a lot of difficulties.

“I know it’s summer, and I

I spoke up and said, “Look over there. Is that a Hobby Lobby store?”

The atmosphere in the vehicle changed automatically.

She looked in my direction and

asked me a question I knew she wanted me to answer, “Where’s the Hobby Lobby?”

Sometimes when you answer a question with a question you get completely out of the swamp, you are sinking in.

For the next several minutes, she talked about why she wanted to visit Hobby Lobby and all the things she wanted to check on and maybe even purchase.

So I just sat back in my seat and smiled, knowing I had missed the bombshell that time.

When the vehicle atmosphere got quiet, I knew I had to do something to diverge the energy, so I simply said, “Is that a new thrift store? I don’t think I’ve ever seen that one before.”

Well, the conversation focused on the thrift store, and I learned everything there was to know about that thrift store and all of the stuff she bought there in the past. And even her plans to go and pick up some other items there.

She could not say enough good about that thrift store, and the more she talked about it, the more she smiled. I had accomplished my goal, and I was smiling on the outside now. The rest of the trip home was enjoyable.

Before we got home, she said, “I could go for some ice cream. Should we stop and get some ice cream?”

I just looked at her, smiled and shook my head. We then stopped, got some ice cream, and had a wonderful time

there.

“Wasn’t that,” she said as we started back home, “the best ice cream we’ve had in a long time.”

I know when not to answer certain questions, at least I am learning, but I also know that certain questions are open for response.

“Yes, my dear,” I said as cheerfully as possible, “that was a good idea you had to get some ice cream.”

The trip ended well because I am learning to negotiate what is a question and what is not a question. But, you know I still have a long way to go, at least I am progressing. My confidence in our relationship is growing according to my understanding of the asking challenge I face everyday.

This led me to a verse of scripture in 1 John 5:14 - “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us” I am also learning what to ask and what not to ask when it comes to my relationship with God. Learning what questions God will answer goes a long way in my Christian experience and it saves me a lot of time.

Most of my prayer time, up until now, has been wasted asking the wrong questions.

Brought out of darkness

Dear Readers, want to share with you today this young man’s story. We celebrate Tom; the Holy Spirit brought him to A Touch From Above Prayer Mountain three year ago. He’s grown so strong in God’s Word; he was pulled right out from Satan’s grip to give JESUS all glory.

From a homeless broken man strung out on crystal meth and heroin. He lost his mind, eating out of dumpsters, sleeping on the street, barefoot and wandering in the darkness of his own mind. He was trapped in a web of confusion, his mother looking for him on the streets.

Crying and wondering if her son would one day be found dead.

I

But God had a different plan for this young man. God pulled him right out of that darkness, restored his mind, and has given Tom purpose, vision, and a new direction for his life. Today Tom is a BRAND NEW MAN, now full of the Holy Spirit and power and filled with God’s amazing JOY! He’s such a blessing to this ministry, A Touch From Above Prayer Mountain. Tom labor’s faithfully day to day, reads his Bible like no other person I know, and faithfully prays. He’s a TREASURE pulled out of darkness!

To Jesus is all glory!

His mother was so touched by her son’s transformation; she too is now a Christian, born again and comes to church faithfully every Sunday. One life truly touched by the hand of the Master can touch the lives of thousands for Jesus. I rejoice as I watch God unfold His plan for Tom. He’s so grateful for all God has done and is doing in his life. He’s truly a miracle of God’s grace and love. Tom overdosed more times than one can imagine, he was even in a coma for 10 days. Many thought he wouldn’t make it, but God had another plan for this man. God hears the cry of a mother!

Our prayer and labor is not in vain, we can see the fruit before our eyes. You see, the only things we can take to heaven are people! As we look around in this world, we can see all the broken lives, lost and walking in darkness. Jesus called us to reach out and share; His Word is hope for the hopeless, its peace for the troubled soul, and healing for the broken heart.

We’re surrounded by many in need of Jesus. One life touches another and God’s Word truly brings LIFE. Tom is so grateful for all the wonderful things God is doing in his life; he has purpose and vision. One day Tom will graduate from A Touch From Above Christian University, his testimony tells the whole world, “JESUS SAVES the LOST!” I’m so proud of this young man; he brings such joy to my heart.

Are you wondering what’s going to happen to your child or loved one who is lost and wandering the streets? Pray dear one, God is always faithful to hear our cries. Ask God to send someone to share God’s love and salvation with your loved one. God has angels He releases on the earth to help in His work to save the lost soul. Our prayer holds back the evil forces that ride against your loved one. Do you remember in the book of Acts 9:18; “Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again, he got up and was baptized,” Saul became one of the most powerful men God called, he would kill Christians and have them placed in prison, but after one touch from above, Saul became one of God’s mighty servants the Apostle Paul, he was used greatly for God’s purpose. God has a plan, let Him use you.
