Q&A WITH DR. RENÉ DELL’ACQUA Q: Do you also provide General Dentistry? A: Yes I do! My patients receive the highest level of general dentistry available. My philosophy is one of prevention. We work hard to educate our patients and make suggestions before problems occur. Every patient receives a comprehensive examination and plan to keep their mouth healthy through preventative maintenance. Q: What do you like best about what you do? A: No two patients are alike. Each one presents with a different cosmetic and restorative need. I enjoy the challenge of creating a natural smile that is unique to the person in front of me. I sculpt the shapes of the final veneers and crowns myself. It is art and I love it! Q: Do you consider your work to be mostly artistic? A: Function is always the key to the success of a case. I have patients who have severely worn and collapsed bites, missing teeth requiring implants and a multitude of complicated scenarios. The technical aspect of the dentistry is the key to the success of the case. The knowledge that comes from doing these cases daily is the difference between success and failure. 17 PLUS YEARS OF LOYAL DEVOTION TO DESERT ARC By Madeline Zuckerman All humanitarian work performed charitably is considered philanthropy. For many, humanitarian efforts are seasonal, with their efforts being interrupted by life’s responsibilities. Then there are those select few who cross paths with an organization or a cause that resonates so deeply within them, that it completely alters them and their life’s journey. For Palm Desert resident Nancy Singer, Desert Arc’s mission would become her lodestone, and she would become a rock upon which the organization could anchor itself.
“Desert Arc is very close to my heart and has been for over 17 years,” states Nancy. “My inspiration for getting involved so many years ago with Desert Arc is my beloved niece, Erica Davis–Popely, who was diagnosed at three days old with Down Syndrome.”
In 2004, Nancy crossed paths with Tina Lopez while playing bridge at Mission Hills Country Club. Tina had a son who was a client of Desert Arc, and she herself was serving on the Board of Desert Arc at the time. As the ladies chatted, Tina became aware of Nancy’s passion for helping people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Tina invited Nancy to join a group of volunteers who were involved with Desert Arc. Nancy certainly made an impression on Tina, because without Nancy’s knowledge, Tina submitted Nancy’s name for consideration for a Board position with the organization. Nancy was immediately elected to the Board, and this was the beginning of a 17 plus year run as a loyal and devoted volunteer of Desert Arc! Without children of her own, her brother’s children are dear to Nancy’s heart, and she has a special closeness with her niece Erica. “When Erica was diagnosed with Down Syndrome, my brother and sister-in-law, my parents, and I enrolled in classes to educate and learn treatments – the five of us were incredibly involved with Erica, and she often refers to me as her second Nancy Singer mom.” Erica Davis-Popely met her husband, Benjamin Popely, a high-functioning autistic gentleman, at a dance for people with disabilities in 2007. Three years later they were married. Ten years later, and still madly in love, the Orange County-based couple find work in their community through programs like Desert Arc. Over the years, Singer has held every Officer position on the Desert Arc Board, including Board Chair, from which she has had a comprehensive view of the entirety of Desert Arc’s operations. She celebrates Desert Arc’s current leadership for its competency, and the professionalism of the organization’s staff. “Nancy is a passionate, tireless advocate and exemplary volunteer fundraiser in support of Desert Arc’s mission of serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities,” states Richard Balocco, President/CEO of Desert Arc. “As a longtime Board Member and Chair of the Development Committee, Nancy was instrumental in the launch of Desert Arc’s well-known “Champions of Change” Recognition Awards Luncheon. We are very appreciative and very lucky to have such an amazing volunteer working to benefit our organization.”

Shenandoah or Bust A Bucket List Wish Fulfilled

t’s a cloudy afternoon in September and the RV has just crossed over the state border, from North Carolina to Virginia. Despite the storm predictions, we’ve kept our plans and are making our way to Shenandoah National Park. Beside me sits Diane, a retired science teacher of thirty years and our bucket list wish grantee. Though Diane has a rare eye disease and has suffered rheumatoid arthritis since she was eight years old, her days are filled with activities like tending to her pollinator garden, painting watercolors to donate funds to Meals on Wheels, and getting in her 15,000 daily steps (in spite of the fact that she walks with a cane). Next to her is Claudia, a lifelong New Yorker and loyal companion who now lives in Diane’s same 55+ community in Durham. With MyJump, a nonprofit organization that helps seniors achieve what's left on their bucket list, I’ve chased hot air balloons, gone in the Goodyear Blimp, and even zip-lined over the Grand Canyon. But I’ve never experienced a bucket list wish quite like this before. Diane’s wish is shockingly simple: to ride in an RV. When we arrive at the park, which is famed for its panoramic views, the storm has set in and the clouds of fog are so thick we can’t see even one foot in front of us. These iconic panoramic views are nowhere to be found, but Diane doesn’t mind. She simply hands me a smiley face umbrella, steps off the RV, and breathes in the fresh forest air. The next day, our only full day in the park, the storm is raging yet still—Diane is blissfully content to play Monopoly all day. “I think being grateful is the secret to life,” she tells me while we sit in rocking chairs later on, looking out the window and into the rain-drenched emerald green canopy of trees. It’s then that I realize Diane's bucket list wish is unique because she’s unique. Her wish is not at all about reaching the destination, because that’s not how she lives her life. Instead, it’s about enjoying the journey she takes to get there—rain or shine. As we head back home the next morning, the panoramic view that was once blanketed in a dense fog now gives way to an extraordinary sea of greenery and sunshine, so we stop at a few of the lookouts on Skyline Drive. For Diane, and myself, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime moment that is both poignant and fleeting. In November, I’m back to the routine of daily life on the West Coast when a water-soaked envelope shows up on my doorstep in the middle of a rainstorm. Inside is the stunning print of a watercolor painting that Diane painted as she was undergoing seven major eye surgeries. This one painting alone took her nineteen months to complete. “I share this print with you as a way of sharing the blessings of sight and of friendship,” she writes. And just like that—a little rain on the print no longer bothers me. In fact, it actually makes the watercolor painting that much more special. It’s like Diane says— even through the storm, there’s always a bit of peace. There’s always a silver lining.

Desert Sands Unified School District Supervisor Expanded Learning Programs Jaime Bikis said, “Now more than ever students need a creative outlet to express themselves through hands on activities that support their social and emotional well-being.”
Indio’s Herbert Hoover Elementary School Principal Karen Schibler thanked Tools For Tomorrow for enabling students in a socio-economically disadvantaged area to learn a joy for the arts — “Students are producing art and developing new skills. We saw a huge increase in participation from the first class offered in the fall to our signups in the spring.” Research shows that participation in regular arts education can bolster selfconfidence, academic performance and coping skills. Adult Health and Fitness Today, Inc. (AHFT) was started three years ago by Mercedes Godfrey and a dedicated Board of Directors which includes Linda Rider, AHFT President and AFP 2021 Outstanding Philanthropist. All of the Board has and still does take group exercise classes with Godfrey and believe in her ability to change the lives of older adults through exercise. Due to the pandemic, program delivery changed from in-person group training at a facility to free in-home training delivered online. Delivering free fitness training on their website allowed AHFT to expand their Senior specific fitness programs across the entire Coachella Valley. As the public health lock-down was lifted, AHFT reinstated in-person group training at their facility and to Senior 55+ living facilities in the community. After talking to several facility programming directors, Godfrey realized how much additional damage the pandemic inflicted on the Seniors as a result of a sedentary year isolated from friends and family.
Shannon Versluys, Administrator for Park David Affordable Housing for 55+, expressed a common concern Godfrey heard frequently, “Our budget and group activities have been decimated by the pandemic. I can’t tell you how painful it has been to watch many of our residents on a downward spiral fed by inactivity and loneliness. Their attitude is often one of resignation and hopelessness.” Godfrey plans to restore hope, health and a sense of well-being in the Senior community and she’s asking the rest of us to pitch in and make it happen. Since 2012 we have had over 29 student interns advance through our theatre internship program learning set design, management and more. In addition, we have given out over $18k in scholarships. Allen co-founded IMAHelps in 2000 with his wife, Ines, to organize medical humanitarian missions that provide some of the world’s most underserved people with everything from general medical and dental care to life-changing surgeries, prosthetics and other specialized services that reflect the expertise of our volunteers. Operating with no paid staff, no salaries and no financial backing, the Allen’s have built a team of 130 volunteers who have provided free healthcare to over 100,000 impoverished patients in nine countries. IMAHelps has grown to a point where it now organizes some of the largest humanitarian medical missions in the Western Hemisphere.

Desert Sands Unified School District Superintendent Making A Difference Amid the relentless stressors of the pandemic, Desert Sands Unified School District continues to deliver on its vision, mission, and values. I remain in awe of the synergy that was created with the educational community as we expeditiously returned our 27,000 students to in-person learning environments as soon as it was deemed safe to do so following the emergency state-wide school closures. I acknowledge the tremendous effort of students, parents, staff and community. The Desert Sands Educational Foundation (DSEF) has built on that synergy and has realized tremendous growth from our caring community. As I approach my retirement, I wish to thank our community for helping me answer my late grandfather’s charge to “leave the world better than you found it.”
Barry Dayton Before Desert Oasis Healthcare (DOHC,) my 15 years of nonprofit experience were also in healthcare marketing and public relations. While fundraising is no longer among my duties at DOHC, I love working for a company that helps support worthwhile causes both through generous donations and the volunteer time of its employees and management. From childhood, my parents instilled a sense of responsibility for helping others. They also taught my brothers and me that it was important to give because it was the right thing to do, rather than expecting praise or recognition for your donation or the gift of your time. Not seeking the spotlight has also been true of DOHC because for many years they have been quietly giving to a variety of nonprofit organizations that serve the needs of those in the communities where our members and employees live. During my time with DOHC they’ve given a substantial amount annually to those serving families and seniors, the chronically and terminally ill, and providing social services that bring dignity to people’s lives. Although they had already given $200,000 in 2021, DOHC marked its 40th anniversary with the “40 for 40” Challenge that gifted an additional $40,000 to the 10 local nonprofits that the public decided were most deserving. During the month of June 2021, more than 12,400 people came to MyDOHC. com to register their votes. On July 1, DOHC mailed checks that ranged from $1,000 to $12,000. With the pandemic putting a greater strain on almost everyone’s resources, all of the benefiting organizations told us how important these donations were. Whether a $12,000 … $10,000 … $7,000 … or $5,000 donation at the high end or $1,000 gift to the other six organizations, the unexpected gifts may have made a significant difference. Jeff Grubbe Jeff L. Grubbe serves as Tribal Chairman for the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. With his election in 2006 to the Tribal Council, Chairman Grubbe continues a legacy of service and follows in his grandfather Lawrence Pierce’s footsteps, who also once served on the Tribal Council. Chairman Grubbe is most inspired by God, family and Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians tribal membership. Under the leadership of Chairman Grubbe and the Tribal Council, the Tribe has donated millions of dollars to many charities over the past decade “It’s an honor to support charities throughout the Coachella Valley and beyond,” Chairman Grubbe says. “It’s through their hard work that allow so many to benefit.” Chairman Grubbe is also involved in various organizations across Indian Country including service to the following boards or commissions: Nike N7, UCLA American Indian Studies Center, UC California President’s Native American Advisory Council, CSUSB President’s Native American Advisory Committee, Desert Regional Medical Center, Southern California Tribal Chairmen’s Association, California Indian Nation College and California Tribal Families Coalition. In addition, he serves on the Board of Trustees of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. Under his leadership and along with the Tribal Council, the Tribe has opened Agua Caliente Fuel in Rancho Mirage and is building the Agua Caliente Cultural Plaza in downtown Palm Springs, which is anticipated to open in Fall 2022. Grubbe earned his bachelor degree in Information Systems from the University of Redlands. He also has an associate arts degree from Haskell Indian Nations University.

Making A Difference At Think Together our mission is to partner with schools to change the odds for kids. In California, 2 million kids, out of 6 million are effectively failing school. Most of these students are African-American and LatinX. This is known as the achievement gap. We work with schools to close this gap and we work with families to provide the support system around schools, which also helps to close this gap.

I started this in 1990 when I founded Cable Positive, the cable television industry’s AIDS organization and continues today with Destination PSP. He joined ECF in 1999 as President and CEO, and continues to be a leader in this capacity. In 2020, confronted with the pandemic, Scott and ECF began shaping a new service environment and setting new standards of service delivery for the safety and benefit of over 5,000 children and adults with special needs. Making A Difference We need health equity for people if we’re going to beat COVID-19. Health equity means everyone has the opportunity to be healthy based on their needs, not on their ability to pay. It means no one should feel like an outsider once they come inside to see a doctor or psychologist.
Making A Difference Last year it was the time where we needed to be available for people to experience the healing benefits of art. We created and delivered over 27,000 art experiences for the Coachella Valley. We offered art summer camps and classes for kids that were unable to attend their regular school year. For our seniors and high-risk students, we were able to secure funding to host online classes and materials. I am extremely grateful for our instructors and staff that have such a passion for giving back to the community to risk their own health. They are my hero’s.

Richard Balocco Richard Balocco is the President/CEO of Desert Arc, a nonprofit organization who has championed the rights of people with disabilities since 1959. Its mission is to enhance the quality of life and create opportunities for people with disabilities. With locations in Palm Desert, Indio and Yucca Valley, Desert Arc serves nearly 700 adults, 18 and older, with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout the desert cities and outlying areas. The programs offered by Desert Arc, many now virtual, are designed to give each person a safe and supportive, client-centric resource base to reach their highest potential to live, work and socialize in the community. “Our teams created online programming during the pandemic and our clients continue to thrive on a full calendar of activities. There are some clients who have returned to Desert Arc as our gradual reopening of on-site activities continues, but there are clients who prefer to participate remotely. Desert Arc’s fleet of buses also serve to transport food, equipment and supplies like iPads and art materials to each person at their residence. Plus, the FYI– For Your Independence program’s life coach instructors, meet regularly with clients at their homes with safety protocols in place. Robert L. Schein Robert L. Schein is the founder of The Society of Financially Empowered Women (The FEW), a 501 (c)(3) registered nonprofit organization that focuses on empowering all women with the right tools and information to help them attain financial independence and financial security. Robert founded The FEW in 2011 after his father’s health complications left his mother feeling overwhelmed and confused on how to best handle the family finances. After seeing that his mother lacked the financial knowledge and confidence to plan for her financial future, Robert made it his mission to empower and educate women to take control of their financial lives. In January 2021, The FEW continued its mission to empower women in the Coachella Valley by hosting its second annual Confidence: Women + Wealth + Wellness Summit, a virtual one-day conference promoting financial wellness, self-care, and personal and professional growth. Making A Difference The pandemic presented challenges to low-income older adults often lacking access to healthy food and adequate daily nutrition. The message was to stay home, stock up on food and supplies, and avoid group activities. While social distancing limits the spread of the virus, anything that deters people from accessing meals at senior centers puts low-income seniors in danger of malnutrition and hunger. Cathedral City Senior Center provides programs and services to ensure that food-insecure and socially isolated older adults stay fed and healthy during the pandemic and beyond. He moved his company to Desert Hot Springs in May 2020 and quickly became a philanthropist to the community. The Development Department Making A Difference As a founder of The Development Department, it became apparent to me that the pandemic created enormous challenges for our local nonprofits: loss of giving opportunities, decreases in funding and staff, and pressure on executive directors and CEOs to do more with less. Desert Oasis Healthcare Director of Marketing Making A Difference When California introduced its “Vaccinate All 58” campaign for COVID-19, Desert Oasis Healthcare (DOHC) jumped in wholeheartedly to do its best within our service area in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. DOHC began giving what now totals tens of thousands of vaccines. As flu season returned once again, we used our Mobile Health Clinic to extend our reach for both COVID and flu vaccines, and health screenings into even the remotest areas of the Coachella Valley and the High Desert. Greater Palm Springs Pride President / CEO Making A Difference Ron oversees the Coachella Valley’s largest annual LGBTQ celebration and programs of the Palm Springs Pride organization. With lingering COVID-19 safety protocols, the year continued to be a challenge for many nonprofit organizations. Anticipating that the community would be eager to be outside with friends after months of isolation, the Pride organization worked all year to prepare a weeklong celebration of the diverse Palm Springs community. We planned and hoped safety guidelines would allow the community to celebrate outside. What resulted was the largest Pride Week in the city’s history the likes of which we may never see again.

In August 2021, the Bob Hope USO at Palm Springs welcomed their new Center & Operations Manager, Rob McQueary. As a Retired Master Chief Petty Officer of the United States Coast Guard of 24 years, McQueary experienced firsthand the impact of the USO mission to strengthen America’s military service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country throughout their service to the nation. Throughout his successful and distinguished military career, McQueary felt the appreciation of a grateful nation with every USO volunteer he encountered. He now leads the Desert Area outreach efforts, serving nearly 35,000 troops and their families annually with the support of over 100 local volunteers.
Making A Difference The families and the children they have lost are simply unforgettable to me”, says Tim Evans, M.Div/CFRE, who is the founder of the 20+ year old Inland So Cal founded charity 501 (c)(3) – The Unforgettables Foundation serving all Riverside, San Bernardino, and Orange counties. Evans served for almost 15 years at the bedside of thousands of injured, ill and dying children as the first children’s chaplain of Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital for the trauma region of Riverside, San Bernardino, Inyo and Imperial counties, and learned that many families are not prepared financially for the addition and unexpected costs of cremation or burial with a funeral.

I am proud of how the McCallum Theatre continued to engage our youth in the arts during COVID and expanding the program into Riverside County where it is so appreciated and needed. Food Now’s mission is to improve the quality of life for residents in western Coachella Valley (now including Palm Springs and Cathedral City) by providing food assistance, community outreach and support services which strengthen families and build healthy communities. Low-income families face many hurdles just obtain the basic resources needed to get by, much less thrive. A healthy diet is not a luxury; it is necessity. For more than 30 years Food Now has made a significant impact in the lives of thousands of men, women, and children by providing access to food assistance and family support services. Food Now provides the following services free to our community. Food Assistance: A healthy diet is a critical component to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Food Now provides a safe and secure source of healthy food. Food Now provides food assistance for approximately 350 households every week. During Covid, the number surged over to 750 households receiving assistance every week. Children’s Backpack Weekend Meal Program: is a cooperative effort with the Palm Springs Unified School District and provides selected chronically hungry children with a backpack filled with additional nutritional support on weekends, meals they would normally receive at school. Homeless Needs Program: Food Now provides up to 40 homeless clients with daily distributions of special ready to eat food packages which require no heating or refrigeration. Personal hygiene items are distributed. Companion Pet Food Distribution: Food Now is a county Pet Friendly Zone participant and provides weekly distributions of pet food (when available). Food Now volunteers donate approximately 16,000 hours of their time per year! When a household becomes food secure, there is an economic and social benefit. Money saved on a food expense can be reallocated for education, clothing, supplies, and so much more. Clients become housing secure by being able to make a rent or mortgage payment. Jobs are more secure because money is available for transportation expenses. The health and well-being of the community is improved with money available for medical care and prescriptions. Golf Tournament
The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians held its 11th Annual Charity Golf Tournament on Monday Dec. 6, 2021 at the Indian Canyons Golf Resort in Palm Springs. Each year, the money raised goes to five charities. Recipients from the recent event include: the American Heart Association, Autism Society Inland Empire, Palm Springs Animal Shelter, Palm Springs Firefighters Association and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women USA. “We are proud to create first-class event at the Indian Canyons Golf Resort supporting these important charities,” says Tribal Chairman Jeff L. Grubbe. “Our sponsors and partners know how important it is for these charities to receive support from the community.” Learning more about the mission of each of the charity organizations is an important element of the golf tournament. Members of the recipient charities even participate in the day’s activities out on the golf course or in the clubhouse on the day of the event. Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women USA’s works to bring home those missing and help the families of the murdered cope through the grief. “We help our indigenous women and girls who go missing … we work to bring them home, get them out of situations such as domestic violence, human trafficking, so many different scenarios,” says Pam Smith, of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women USA. “We are so grateful for this donation and it will go to help numerous families.” Established by parents of children with autism in 1986, the Autism Society Inland Empire works to improve the lives of those affected by autism. There are currently more than 17,000 people living with autism in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. The organization works for a world where individuals and families living with autism can maximize their quality of life, be treated with the highest level of dignity, and live in a society where their talents and skills are appreciated and valued. “We provide a lot of different services because there are a lot of different needs,” Beth Burt, of Autism Society Inland Empire, said. “This is the first time receiving this generous donation from the golf tournament and we are beyond thrilled because this is support that will go right back into the community.” The Penta Building Group was this year’s Presenting Sponsor. “We have a strong belief to be a part of the communities where we work and we have been working with Agua Caliente for almost 20 years,” said John Cannito, President of the Penta Building Group. “We just really believe in giving back to the community. Making A Difference COVID-19 presented us with the challenge of doing a charity event that had been live for 12 years, but now couldn’t be. We did what technology allowed us to do – go virtually. We asked performers to each film a 3-song set that we broadcasted live on Facebook over 3 evenings. The response was great! A generous philanthropist heard or read an interview I did about the virtual benefit and made a sizable donation to the Desert Autism Foundation. It goes to show that making the effort to help, despite the circumstances, is always worth it.
“Strengthening families and building healthy communities. This is the Food Now mission. It could also be my life’s ambition. After a life changing accident ended my career in Public Utilities, I was not only looking for, but I desperately need a change. A change of scenery, a change of career, and a change of heart. I had family living in the desert. I loved the tranquility and serenity. I was also impressed by the proud sense of community. I found a new home. I was looking for some sort of sign as to what was in store as I entered my new season. I didn’t have to wait long. My twin brother was active in several charitable causes. He was selfless and found great joy in giving back. He got me involved, first as a volunteer. It was the first time in a long time I was looking out for someone else. And it felt good. I went back to school and received a degree in Non-Profit Business Management. After working for different charities as grant writer and Director of Development, I took the job with Food Now as Executive Director in 2017.

Making A Difference I spent the COVID pandemic collaborating and communicating virtually with my team, community partners, and local media. Conveying accurate and timely information to our community members became increasingly important as details about the pandemic changed daily. We evolved the DAP Health brand, launching a new magazine for the community while partnering with Sunnylands Center and Gardens on an immersive storytelling project examining how shame prevents many individuals from asking for the healthcare they need and deserve. Community members were able to listen to audio stories accessed via QR codes or watch a short film about DAP Health’s commitment to expanding health access and equity.
Making A Difference My deep roots in the Coachella Valley have helped inspire and guide my career around our vibrant philanthropic region. Communication and getting to know donors, especially listening, are key to establishing a long-term partnership for giving. Josh N. Zahid Josh N. Zahid is a familiar face, not only in the Inland Empire but also in the Coachella Valley. His tenure with Loma Linda University Health began in 1998 when he started as a volunteer and soon moved to a full-time position at Loma Linda University Behavioral Medicine Center. There, he dedicated his young professional career to serving adolescents and their families who struggled with mental health and substance abuse. Josh joined Children’s Hospital Foundation in August of 2013 to support and manage four independent volunteer groups with more than 450 annual members. He leads more than forty-eight events over the course of nine months. Josh celebrated 20 years of service at Loma Linda in October 2021. Josh is recognized for his leadership, excellence and kindness as implementing best practices for signature events, retention rate with volunteers and patient diversionary activities. Josh was an instrumental factor with the Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital – Health, Jill and Barry Golden Pavilion that opened in March 2018 to provide a medical care for the children of the Coachella Valley. The clinic is now medical home to more than 5,800 children of the Coachella Valley. Josh was recognized by the American Healthcare Philanthropy in September 2020 with the 40 Under 40 Program designed to recognize the future leaders within the healthcare development community. Josh also served a two-year term as Vice President of Education & Programs for the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Desert Communities Chapter and currently serves as the Diversity and Inclusion Chair and President-Elect. Making A Difference It’s easier said than done: “Building Champions, Building Men.” But at The SoCal Coyotes we do it – we’ve done it — through nearly 10 years of nonprofit sports ministry, starting in 2011. What began as: ‘Faith, Family, Football’ has become a multi-generational service organization that truly impacts youth in need.
Making A Difference During the COVID crises, my focus remains on The Joslyn Center mission to reduce isolation and loneliness and provide essential nutritional and counseling services to local seniors. Our Meals on Wheels and nutrition programs are growing. Wellness Center counseling/educational programs continue along with continuing virtual programs for our members. With the re-opening of The Joslyn Center, we are focusing on the safety and health of our members while providing vital on-site programs to maintain health and opportunities for socialization. We have new exercise classes along with over 40 on-site classes and activities. COVID has sharpened my focus on reaching seniors where they are with programs and services that enrich their lives.

Making A Difference From the moment the first “Covid cancellation” came in, we knew we needed to embrace change to help our non-profit partners raise the money they desperately needed to replace their in-person galas. We went from being leery of “virtual galas” to diving in 100% and simply making them happen. Suddenly revenue records were being set virtually, and new donors were springing up from states and countries an in-person gala wouldn’t have reached.
Making A Difference We are working to supply animal food to our local food pantries. We are also safely adopting animals and accepting animals from the community.
Making A Difference My first fundraising experience was at six at my local YMCA selling soap to go to camp. In college, I was trained to become a YMCA Director and was for more than 20-years. I served more than 101 nonprofits throughout the country and Coachella Valley in “Making A Difference” to their Missions and assisting many in raising a total of almost $100 million. Dr. Sherman believes in upholding the 100% college acceptance rate and rigorous academic standards that are woven into the 70 year history of the school, but wants each Palm Valley student and faculty member to focus on the importance of mental health, the art of giving back to the community and the joy of learning. Matt Durkan Matt Durkan serves as the Director of Development for the College of the Desert Foundation. A seasoned development professional with extensive experience in higher education fundraising, Durkan joined the organization in October. He has held executive positions with other respected nonprofit organizations including UCLA, California State University, San Bernardino, and the Betty Ford Center. A resident of the Coachella Valley since 2014, Durkan has an established track record of securing significant foundation, corporate and individual philanthropic support, both locally and across the country. “Throughout my career, I have represented nonprofit organizations whose missions I support passionately, especially those in higher education, healthcare and advocacy. I’m particularly focused on helping underserved and underrepresented communities, an especially important segment of our region’s population.” Matt is proud to join College of the Desert Foundation as Director of Development. Making A Difference The Palm Desert Campus of California State University, San Bernardino has a strong commitment to its students. During the pandemic, it was difficult for many students to move to an online format, and many of them faced issues with their home computers and laptops. Many had weak signals to access the internet which prevented them from attending online classes and completing assignments. Throughout the pandemic, CSUSB has been there for its students by providing laptops and hotspots so they can continue with their studies and be successful. Making A Difference Reaching out to our patrons became even more important during the pandemic. The McCallum fundraising team took time to make phone calls and send cards to our constituents letting them know we were thinking of them and asking how they were doing. Friendly communication allowed us to continue cultivating our relationships even though the Theatre was closed. We also kept in touch through our very successful Ghostlight Performance Series, offered at no charge online. McCallum Theatre Education was able to pivot quickly and offer online workshops and performances which reached more than 31,000 students. We are thrilled to welcome back audiences after our long intermission and look forward to a fabulous season!

Making A Difference The Academy of Musical Performance (AMP) is an incredible music education program whose goal is to enrich the lives of young musicians age 10-18 living in the Coachella Valley. I have been a music instructor at AMP since its inception in 2015 and now to be the program director is just a huge honor. I grew up here in the valley and have played music ever since I can remember so I absolutely love helping all of our talented young musicians with their musical development and live performance skills in a “rock band” style setting. We have also just started our private lessons program which is off to an incredible start! Here at AMP kids of all ages can learn from the very best musicians in the Desert. We offer Drums, Bass, Guitar, Piano, vocal and even recording classes and all
Making A Difference Grandfathers for Golf, Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization founded with the primary focus of teaching golf to students considered to be “at-risk youth” who, based on risk factors such as low socioeconomic status, behavioral problems, and low achievement, run the risk of not acquiring the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors needed to become successful adults.

Making A Difference It was a busy Fall. It started in LA by taking 20 residents from two low-income senior living communities to the Van Gogh exhibit. From there we took two lovely ladies from Boston (who happen to be master quilters) to their very first National Quilt show in Philadelphia. We then picked up two more ladies from Durham, North Carolina who experienced their first RV journey through Shenandoah National Park. We closed out the year with a 3-Generation Skydive in Houston, Texas on Veteran’s Day. To fulfill a bucket list wish for one Veteran is an honor, but three… that was epic! Our focus for the new year will be fulfilling more wishes for our seniors here in the Coachella Valley.
Making A Difference UCPIE continues to support our special needs families and our staff throughout the pandemic by focusing on keeping everyone safe and socially connected. After school and summer programs moved to Zoom with great success. Family counseling helped families deal with the additional stresses of the pandemic. Adaptive bikes got our families outdoors and exercising. Respite care became more important to families than ever. We utilized drive-up events to distribute PPE, supplies and gifts. I am so proud of our staff who have gone above and beyond during this difficult time and our community who continues to support our mission.
Making A Difference Every day I see people who are in different stages of rebuilding their lives, having been broken, shattered, needing help when they have been at their most vulnerable. To be a part of the process that assists them in achieving victories, both private and public is the most rewarding thing I have ever done in my professional life. It is a privilege to be part of a team that saves lives one life at a time.
Making A Difference At the beginning of the pandemic, I decided that I needed to change the frequency of my monthly newsletter, which reaches an audience of over 2,000, to a weekly newsletter. The reason for this change was to show our concern and interest in our customers who support the Desert Institute. We regularly asked questions of our audience as to how they were coping with the pandemic, their greatest fears and what hope they had. By strengthening our communications, we remained relevant, even though all of our in-person outdoor educational programs had ceased. We then shifted to virtual programs and our audiences responded with gratitude. Now that our outdoor programs have returned, so have our course participants

CVHC continues to lead the way in the development of low-income housing opportunities having developed more than 2,827 units of affordable rental housing and helped 2,087 families build and purchase their own single-family homes.
Making A Difference Guide Dogs of the Desert has been in existence for almost 50 years. To continue making a difference on the lives of visually impaired and legally blind people, by providing them with a custom-trained Guide Dog, we have embarked on a “50-50-50 Campaign for the Future.” I am privileged to lead the organization in this new 10-year vision. Yet I cannot do this alone. Desert Oasis Healthcare Partners with America’s Charities To support employees facing financial hardship through new SAFE Fund “Every day, our employees show our collective commitment to the health and well-being of our thousands of members/patients. Generally speaking, board development is any kind of education that helps your board govern your nonprofit more effectively. With so many training opportunities, it’s easy to wind up spinning your wheels when it comes to ongoing board development. To maximize your board development and keep your board on track, consider taking the following steps.
DETERMINE THE SKILLS YOU NEED AT THE BOARD LEVEL
Your board members can help your organization fill gaps in legal knowledge, fundraising expertise, subject matter expertise, and financial management, as well as other common areas of board development – like program evaluation, risk management, organizational ethics, investment management, diversity and equity, and general governance issues. Knowing where your board is strong and where it has room for improvement is important. You’ll also want to make sure a crosssection of the community you serve is represented on your board. These members will have a sense for whether your programs are effective and fulfilling a community’s needs – and how to change course if they aren’t.
MAKE USE OF A COMMITTEE STRUCTURE
Board committees are your friends! Not only does the ability to divide and conquer free up general meeting time for the issues that truly require the input of your full board, but decisions and forward motion are easier to achieve since fewer voices are weighing in on all the details. Committees that focus on fundraising, determining board development activities, and even succession planning for the recruitment of new board members are all great ideas.
COMMIT TO A STRATEGIC PLAN
Whether you’re hiring a consultant or trying to manage a strategic plan in-house, make sure your board is fully committed to honoring its stated goals and objectives. This will help you stay focused on the right opportunities and avoid mission drift in the long run. Check in on your strategic plan regularly, and stay on top of timelines and outcomes. Identify shorter- and longer-term goals and reassess your progress toward them regularly.
DON’T SKIP EVALUATIONS
Your board members should be ready and willing to regularly review their own individual performance and evaluate the success of the board as a whole. Make sure your evaluations clearly reflect the roles and responsibilities of board members and committees. (If you don’t have written position descriptions for board members, create them right away!) Regular evaluations are important for adjusting your approach and processes as necessary and keeping individual members committed and on-task.

Together We Light the Way for Students in the Coachella Valley Mariah is a fourth-grade student enrolled in Think Together and has been going to her afterschool program since Kindergarten. Her story, like many of our students, is that Think Together has become a second home. Especially after a year of disruptions, she’s excited to be back and make more memories during this school year. “Last year was kind of tough,” Mariah says. “I couldn’t hang out with my friends or do much, and I didn’t leave the house.” This school year has already been packed with fun supplemental lessons, arts, enrichment, and homework support so students can get back on track with their learning and have opportunities for success. Through Think Together, students like Mariah will receive an additional 540 hours of academics and socialemotional development each school year. When Mariah was asked what her favorite memory is, she immediately said, “My favorite memory is the time I met my site coordinator and program leaders for the first time. In late 2019, Animal Samaritans paid off the thirty-year loan on their Thousand Palms Veterinary Clinic in just ten years. With their new debt-free status, the organization has embarked on a capital campaign to build a new state-of-the-art Pet Adoption and Humane Education Center for the Coachella Valley. Founded in 1978, the organization has outgrown its small no-kill shelter on Ramon Road. “We’re in need of a facility that can house more animals, accommodate dogs of all sizes, and allows for robust on-site exercise,” notes CEO Tom Snyder. The projected 20,000 square foot facility is expected to cost between 5.5 and 7.5 million dollars. So far Animal Samaritans has raised, in gifts and pledges, more than 3 million dollars for the project. The center will feature mid-century design elements, and green, environmentally conscious construction materials. Additionally, a second phase of the Center will include the expansion of its veterinary clinic to accommodate more pets and medical specialty services. When Max Levin was severely wounded during Operation Protective Edge, the 2014 conflict between Israel and Gaza, he began keeping a journal on his phone while in the hospital. Eventually uploading all the notes onto his computer, he found he had hundreds of pages filled with emotional text and decided to turn what he had written into a book. Under the Stretcher, published in March 2021, is a vivid and accessible memoir about a young Jewish-American’s experience leaving his family and the comforts of his home in California to relocate halfway across the world to become a Lone Soldier in an elite paratrooper unit of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). “I wanted there to be something out there that taught and showed the modern IDF through the lens of an American,” Levin, said. Levin’s military service and the injuries he sustained when he was wounded in an explosion in Gaza — the worst explosion during the entire war — had a transformative impact on him and opened his eyes to the challenges Israeli soldiers face after they are discharged. Proceeds from his book sales will benefit Bshvil haMahar (For Tomorrow), an Israel-based organization helping discharged IDF soldiers manage the aftereffects of combat experiences through group-led activities in nature. Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2022, SSRC provides free music education and instruction programs to all three Coachella Valley school districts, serving some 35,000 children each year SSRC’s video and live streaming programs – Mr. McSymphony music appreciation series and four-part Music Education Program – are now available to classrooms and students at home. SSRC’s Music Education Program consists of Strega Nona (grades K-2nd), Basics of an Orchestra (4th grade), History of Music 1600-1900 (5th grade and high school versions), and History of Jazz (10-12th grade). SSRC’s Ukes in School program is geared toward 4th and 5th grade students who receive their own ukulele and all necessary materials, free of charge. Since 2013, more than 380 students have learned the ukulele thanks to SSRC’s innovative program. Piano Labs in Schools include electronic pianos, materials and teachers for grade school children. SSRC’s outreach program provides private piano lessons, pianos and scholarships for talented children with a financial need. The Classic Concerts in Schools features pianists, instrumental soloists, dancers, opera singers and other recognized musical artists for kindergarten through 12th grade students. Inland Empire Community Foundation Selects New Senior Vice President of Charitable Giving Inland Empire Community Foundation is pleased to announce that Brie Griset Smith is joining the Foundation as its new Senior Vice President of Charitable Giving, effective November 1. “Over the last several years, our Board has been working on our role helping to build a culture of philanthropy in the Inland Empire. Hiring Brie is one of our biggest steps to putting the team in place to support our Board, staff, donors and stakeholders to activate giving across our diverse region,” said Michelle Decker, IECF President and CEO. In her new role, Brie will lead IECF’s Charitable Giving team and be responsible for undertaking the strategies to steward IECF’s existing donors, while engaging new donors and their passions for the Inland Empire. In partnership with IECF’s Board of Directors and working across all IECF departments, Brie will connect more and more givers to the funding opportunities across the Foundation and the region. This is especially important as IE nonprofits receive a fraction (one-tenth) of major philanthropic and government grant support compared to area counties and across the state. Brie brings over 20 years of experience in fundraising and program development, staff management, financial administration, organizational and board leadership, and strategic planning – most recently as Chief Development Officer for Discovery Science Foundation. Under her leadership, Brie successfully revamped the Development Department, helping Discovery Cube reach more than $32 million through its fiveyear strategic plan. She also facilitated significant philanthropic gifts and grants to advance the mission of Discovery Cube and its programs and initiatives - resulting in over 1,000,000 STEM engagement experiences to learners of all ages across Southern California. Prior to Discovery Cube, Brie served as Vice President of Development at Orange County United Way where she raised more than a $100 million
in the Orange and Los Angeles county markets. “I am proud to join Inland Empire Community Foundation (IECF) as Sr. VP of Charitable Giving to work with all who care passionately about improving our region. The Unforgettables Foundation (TUF), a 20-year old 501 (c)(3) charity serving the Riverside and San Bernardino counties, is very grateful to KESQ–Channel 3 and the H. N. & Frances C. Berger Foundation for the Spotlight on the Desert selection in December 2020. The mission of mercy, which assists financially-challenged and grief-stricken families across the Coachella Valley, offers essential burial and funeral funds in a crisis when a child has died. TUF receives requests each week for its unique funding for kids ages 30-weeks gestation to 18 years old from areas including Desert Hot Springs, Palm Springs, across the valley to Indio and Thermal. We assist with childhood cancer, car wrecks, cardiac cases, SIDS, stillbirth, suicide, amongst other causes of death, over 200 families a year and almost a total of 7,000 to date.
