MOJO JUJU

EMMA DONOVAN & THE PUTBACKS
THE SEVEN UPS

Mojo Juju Most people resist change. Not so Melbourne musician, impresario and raconteur Mojo Juju. Her debut solo release covered a huge amount of rootsy ground, from blues to jazz noir to soul. Mojo Juju’s latest release, her second solo album, Seeing Red / Feeling Blue, carries on in the only fashion she knows how – differently. The album takes on an electronic element, elements of RnB, soul and blues, Mojo Juju’s voice strong and commanding, sometimes crooning, other times almost rapping with the beat, slipping between the two with consummate ease. Emma Donovan & The Putbacks Acclaimed indigenous vocalist Emma Donovan and Melbourne rhythm combo The PutBacks come together to bring you Dawn – an LP of hard-hitting and heartfelt soul - a gritty, uniquely Australian record, simultaneously classic and contemporary. The songwriting is in turns optimistic, angry and melancholic; the music fluid, live and raw. Recorded in one room, on eight channels of analogue tape with an electric connection between Emma and the band in every beat. Quarter Street From the first few notes, it sounds like the real thing. Piano and bass riff hard. Percussion enters. The trombones come in thick and strong. Fantasia, the first song

on Quarter Street’s self-titled LP is authentic ‘salsa dura’ from the old school. It’s tough, it’s gritty and in terms of musicianship, writing and production, it straight up cooks. Quarter Street takes you back to the heart of classic salsa, inspired by the passion of salsa luminaries. The Seven Ups Blending influences from 1970s Nigerian Afrobeat with the deepest of street funk, The Seven Ups are the original party band out of Melbourne. Expect unrestrained solos by unkempt horns over an unpretentious rhythm section whose only interest is laying it down! Career highlights for the band so far have included opening for Charles Bradley (USA), The Budos Band (USA), Babylon Circus (France) and The Bamboos (AUS), as well as a string of raucous residencies at Melbourne venues, two Australian east coast tours and festival spots. In February 2015, The Seven Ups released their debut, self-titled album on limited edition yellow vinyl. The album has received great airplay both nationally and abroad.

Henry Wagons & The Only Children Henry Wagons is a true renaissance man, with a unique swagger reminiscent of a day when frontmen gave back bucket loads of charm and were shrouded in enigmatic mystery. Unanimously lauded as one of Australia’s great entertainers, a Henry Wagons show is a true sight to behold, be it alone with his guitar, or with his floorboard-fracturing band. His latest body of work was tracked in Nashville under the watchful eye of producer Skylar Wilson and is due out early 2016. Cash Savage & The Last Drinks Hypnotising audiences internationally with their signature brand of country, blues and authenticity, Cash Savage and the Last Drinks are a six-piece musical juggernaut with a live performance hailed among Australia’s best. With her growling vocal and enigmatic performance, the honesty of her lyrics and the raw talent of the band behind her back Cash’s heart-pumping live show. In 2015, the band laid strong, loyal roots in Europe over a sixtown, 11-show tour. Their third studio album is due for release in 2016. Ruby Boots A sound reminiscent of old country swagger with a modern day edge, soaring and upfront vocals and classy hooks, Ruby Boots has been adding her flair to the Australian alt-country scene for some years now, and doing so with a world of style and sass. It’s no wonder she has become one of the leading go-to talents for like-minded artists when they come and tour Australia. For principal singer and songwriter Bex Chilcott it’s all drive. The Meltdown is bold, brassy, twangy steam train of bumping backbeats and swinging shuffles. Then there’s that voice; sweet as honey. The voice is soul, but it’s country too and something else indefinable; like you heard it before but don’t know where… There are a lot of soul revival bands around, but The Meltdown’s angle is different. A lifetime of writing and experience is condensed into a golden set of songs and a hot new band. Great vibe, great players, great sound, but it’s the songs that are king here. Deep Street Soul At the forefront of the global funk and soul scene, Deep Street Soul specialise in delivery of hard-hitting gritty funk. Their original recipe of sweet soul and heavy funk grooves has taken the band around the world and back with shows at Glastonbury (UK) and Saint-Paul Soul Jazz Festival (France) plus alongside legends such as Marva Whitney & Charles Walker. 2016 will be the biggest year yet for the band with their highly anticipated third album scheduled for release on Freestyle Records (UK) and followup national and international tours in the pipeline. If you like your Hammond dirty, your diva funky, your rhythm section tight and your horn section slammin’, check out Deep Street Soul! The Deans are the sound of modern, original soul. With velvet-smooth vocals, sweet harmonies, soaring heartbreak guitar, deep Motown bass grooves and hip-shaking rhythms, The Deans combine soul, funk and rock influences to create songs of emotion and soul. The Deans are set to release their new album in 2015, recorded in a farmhouse in the bush and mixed in a vintage train in a 100 year old railway yard, for extra grease and dust. Produced with an old-school analog vibe, the tracks sound warm, shiny and crystal clear, like your favourite vinyl treasures.

CUMBIA COSMONAUTS
Ngaiire is one-of-a-kind in Australia, and one of its finest vocalists, an international artist who “occupies a space somewhere between Solange and Erykah Badu with a coolness matched by a fine mastery” [The Interns]. Ngaiire’s heartbreaking voice, jazz degree from Sydney’s Conservatorium of Music, flamboyant costuming and a downbeat but inspirationfunk / nu-soul sound, earn her well-deserved Janelle Monae comparisons, with live reviews beyond favourable. The successful release of Ngaiire’s 2013 debut album Lamentations resulted in her 2014 Glastonbury debut and support slots for Alicia Keys, John Legend and Cody ChestnuTT. Early reviews for second record Blastoma praise Ngaiire’s “incredible” voice and “dynamic capabilities”. Ella Thompson's debut record Janus, which takes its name from the Roman god, is an assertive foray into the rocky road of maturation. Thompson translates this perfectly into song, with her lyrical inflections shifting between uncertain mutters, husky ruminations and empowered bellows. Her electromelancholy piles in as much optimism as it can muster without forgetting a necessary dose of reality.

Cumbia Cosmonauts continue to push ahead as leading innovators of the global cumbia digital and tropical bass scenes. Mick Thomas Raconteur, troubadour, balladeer and poet, Mick Thomas is best known as the song master of Weddings Parties Anything. His band The Roving Commission features Squeezebox Wally on piano accordion and a rotating schedule of talented performers to keep the party alive with Mick's unique mix of folk, roots and country. Inducted into The Age Hall of Fame in 2012, it’s fair to say that Mick Thomas is something of an Australian Jess Ribeiro music icon, respected by the industry and loved by the crowds. Songwriter Jess Ribeiro plays hauntingly intimate folk music. No stranger to acclaim, Jess Ribeiro’s debut, My Little River, was awarded ABC Radio National Album of the Year, Best Country album at the 2012 AIR Awards and was shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize. Inspired by artists as diverse as The Velvet Underground, Dusty Springfield and Patti Smith, Jess Ribeiro’s latest album, a collaboration with Mick Harvey, dives headlong into hazy rock, landscape ambience and melodious 60’s psych folk. Archer harvests his songs from the stories he finds buried all across the country – as he walks along Australia’s dust cloaked highways, as he labours on a Murray River picking crew, twisting fruit from the vine in the Riverina sun. The weathered songs Archer plays are sparse and raw - it’s music steeped, even driven, by geography, the music of distances vast and landlocked, from a life undisturbed by the passage of time. There’s something vital about his ancient folk and blues, his naked voice and wounded guitar, something irrefutable; the past tattooed upon the present.

Emma’s music crosses the genre barriers taking in soul, funk, jazz, singer-songwriter and more, proving that it’s the power of the song itself that matters most. Rising talent Jess Beck (at AWME with her band Pirra) will talk with Emma about her musical history and the inspiration behind her songwriting. THE SONG CYCLES SESSIONS
TOURING INTERNATIONALLY
Presented by APRA AMCOS The Song Cycles Sessions project partners include APRA AMCOS, Creative Victoria and Barkly Regional Arts Winanjjikari Music Centre. Now in its second year, this important project sees Aboriginal musicians from Victoria journey to Tennant Creek in central Northern Territory to work with Aboriginal musicians from surrounding districts on songwriting, performance and cultural exchange. The project recognises that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) culture is incredibly diverse – the many different ATSI nations have their own unique histories, languages and cultural practices. These cultures, like any, continue to change and evolve; and contemporary music has become an important vehicle in which to explore and speak about the changes within country, as well as a way to keep Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories and songlines strong into the future. SHOWCASE ARTISTS ANNA O Anna O Beats, style, a big voice and soaring melodies - WA born artist Anna O is making waves. Her debut EP When the Winter Came was released in April 2014 and has been garnering critical acclaim, with airplay on national community radio and Triple J. Serious buzz is building around this young artist who is consistently releasing unique, world-class music. If the momentum gathered is anything to go by, one thing is clear – Anna O does not disappoint. ARCHER Archer harvests his songs from the stories he finds buried all across the country – as he walks along Australia’s dust cloaked highways, as he labours on a Murray River picking crew, twisting fruit from the vine in the Riverina sun.

In 2015, the band laid strong, loyal roots in Europe over a six-town, 11show tour. Their third studio album is due for release in 2016. CUMBIA COSMONAUTS Cumbia Cosmonauts continue to push ahead as leading innovators of the global cumbia digital and tropical bass scenes. The production aesthetic of Melbournebased Moses Iten (aka Saca La Mois DJ!!) – producing in collaboration with Thomas ‘Soup’ Campbell - is a combination of the infectious Caribbean offbeat rhythm with warm dub bass lines, sweeping synthesizers and driving beats.
SHOWCASE ARTISTS DEEP STREET SOUL At the forefront of the global funk and soul scene, Deep Street Soul specialise in delivery of hard-hitting gritty funk. Their original recipe of sweet soul and heavy funk grooves has taken the band around the world and back with shows at Glastonbury (UK) and Saint-Paul Soul Jazz Festival (France) plus alongside legends such as Marva Whitney & Charles Walker. 2016 will be the biggest year yet for the band with their highly anticipated third album scheduled for release on Freestyle Records (UK) and follow-up national and international tours in the pipeline. If you like your Hammond dirty, your diva funky, your rhythm section tight and your horn section slammin’, check out Deep Street Soul! ELLA THOMPSON Ella Thompson's debut record Janus, which takes its name from the Roman god, is an assertive foray into the rocky road of maturation. Thompson translates this perfectly into song, with her lyrical inflections shifting between uncertain mutters, husky ruminations and empowered bellows. Her electromelancholy piles in as much optimism as it can muster without forgetting a necessary dose of reality.
His latest body of work was tracked in Nashville under the watchful eye of producer Skylar Wilson and is due out early 2016

SHOWCASE ARTISTS HOWQUA It is a rare moment that you find a musician that can captivate you in a single song. Creating a sound that is grounded by honest lyrics but lifted by resonant percussion and melancholic reverb, HOWQUA gives even the most unseasoned of gig-goers that feeling of witnessing an artist on the brink of something huge. Carrying a certain enigma with his musical style, HOWQUA’s raw and compelling lyrics draw you in, while his performance leaves you yearning to know his story. Not one to shy away from baring his soul through his music, HOWQUA displays all the traits of a phenomenal storyteller and performer. JESS RIBEIRO Songwriter Jess Ribeiro plays hauntingly intimate folk music.

JOHN BENNETT WITH DAVID HYAMS From a remote country where desert meets the sea, Western Australia’s John Bennett has emerged as a singer/songwriter with an astounding ability to transport listeners to his home country. Singing of country and connection to community, John launched his debut self-titled album in 2010. Establishing a name as the ‘Voice of the Kimberley’ the Bidyadanga community man has written an album that sings to country and connects with the yearning in every person to nurture family and the environment. His debut album received 12 national music award nominations including awards for WA Indigenous Song of the Year for his track Wangkaja, APRA Songwriter of the Year and WA Country Music Independent Album of the Year 2013. Performing with multi-instrumentalist David Hyams, John's songs capture the heart and the soul of his people and their deep connection with the land.
SHOWCASE ARTISTS KINGFISHA Brisbane bass-heavy roof-raisers Kingfisha have been laying down weighty reggae and dub and bringing their passionate music to eager audiences for 5 years, in the process cementing themselves as one of the must see acts of the Australian roots scene. The 6-piece band delivers crafted and modern reggae music by coupling their love of Jamaican rhythms with personal depth and style. Vocalist Anthony Forrest fronts the band with his trademark smooth vocal styles, while the bands tight melodies, rhythms and complimentary effects produce a distinct sound. Their second LP is due for release towards the end of 2015. KUTCHA EDWARDS Fusing soulful music and a rich, powerful voice with his personal story, Kutcha Edwards’ deep and rhythmic tones are that of a storyteller whose inspiring songs are full of passion and spirit that evoke a connection to an intimate and resilient Songline. Kutcha invites us on his unforgettable journey of understanding, insight and memories. With a powerful vocal range, his poignancy and humour makes for an unforgettable encounter with one of Australia’s Indigenous icons and celebrated singer/songwriters.
LATINAOTEAROA Latinaotearoa came from the concept of blending local flavours with the colourful cultures of South America. Brazilianborn Auckland DJ Bobby Brazuka and Venezuelan singer Jennifer Zea create a unique live performance with Bobby’s Latin influenced soul-funk selections layered with Jennifer’s ravishing vocals. Added to this melting pot is multi-talented musician and producer Isaac Aesili. Together they create a unique and truly legitimate Latin act with a local flavour, both bending and blending the traditional music of their homelands with the modern sounds of here and now. MICK THOMAS Raconteur, troubadour, balladeer and poet, Mick Thomas is best known as the song master of Weddings Parties Anything. His band The Roving Commission features Squeezebox Wally on Piano Accordion and a rotating schedule of talented performers to keep the party alive with Micks unique mix of folk, roots and country. Inducted into The Age Hall of Fame in 2012, it’s fair to say that Mick Thomas is something of an Australian music icon, respected by the industry and loved by the crowds.
33
SHOWCASE ARTISTS MOJO JUJU Most people resist change. NGAIIRE Ngaiire is one-of-a-kind in Australia, and one of its finest vocalists, an international artist who “occupies a space somewhere between Solange and Erykah Badu with a coolness matched by a fine mastery” [The Interns]. Ngaiire’s heartbreaking voice, jazz degree from Sydney’s Conservatorium of Music, flamboyant costuming and a downbeat but inspiration-funk / nu-soul sound, earn her well-deserved Janelle Monae comparisons, with live reviews beyond favourable. 34
OKA OKA draws upon their Indigenous connection to place and country through music. Their signature sound is an irresistible blend of influences spanning house, big beat, reggae-dub, roots, jazz and world music. A rhythm-based sonic tapestry crossing cultural boundaries, embracing the future without losing sight of the past. At the creative heart of the music is Stu Boga Fergie (aka DidgeriSTU) who connects you to earth with the deep subsonic pulse and resonance of his Yidaki (didgeridoo). He is the big man behind the electronic beats, keys & vocals, inspired by his Aboriginal heritage. ONE UP, TWO DOWN One Up, Two Down bring together raw old-time groove, bluegrass dexterity, and folk storytelling. Their music showcases a deep knowledge and respect for tradition while simultaneously establishing these musicians as boundary pushing musical explorers. They recently released their debut EP, recorded in Nashville, TN.
SHOWCASE ARTISTS PIRRA Pirra are no strangers to performing live and collectively have amassed over 200 shows since 2012. They’ve performed on the festival scene with appearances at Woodford Folk Festival and Sydney Opera House’s Homeground Festival and were handpicked to showcase at APRA Song Summit. Pirra effortlessly meld pop melodies, bluesy riffs with catchy vocals and dark sultry undertones. QUARTER STREET From the first few notes, it sounds like the real thing. Piano and bass riff hard. Percussion enters. The trombones come in thick and strong. Fantasia, the first song on Quarter Street’s self-titled LP is authentic ‘salsa dura’ from the old school. It’s tough, it’s gritty and in terms of musicianship, writing and production, it straight up cooks. Quarter Street takes you back to the heart of classic salsa, inspired by the passion of salsa luminaries
RAISED BY EAGLES Continually raw and captivating performances have cemented Raised By Eagles’ reputation as one of Melbourne’s most sought after independent acts. They scored a nomination for their debut release at The Age Music Victoria Awards for ‘Best Country Album’ 2013, delivered a blinding run of festival shows throughout 2014 and released their widely acclaimed follow-up LP Diamonds In the Bloodstream in May 2015. Raised By Eagles is a band that clearly hit the ground running and shows no signs of slowing down. Diamonds In the Bloodstream has gone on to earn them a nomination at this year’s Australian Independent Music Awards for ‘Best Independent Country Album 2015’, as well as an invitation to perform at the prestigious Americana Music Festival in Nashville, Tennessee. RAYELLA This father / daughter duo deliver a journey into the heartbeat of Australia’s centre filled with tales of life and history from the Indigenous Mudburra people’s homeland. Expressed through a crafty blend of genres including pop, country, rock and reggae and presented in a mix of both Mudburra and English language.
35
SHOWCASE ARTISTS RUBY BOOTS A sound reminiscent of old country swagger with a modern day edge, soaring and upfront vocals and classy hooks, Ruby Boots has been adding her flair to the Australian alt-country scene for some years now, and doing so with a world of style and sass. It’s no wonder she has become one of the leading go-to talents for like-minded artists when they come and tour Australia. For principal singer and songwriter Bex Chilcott it’s all drive. The coarse edges of raw musical passion haven’t been buffed off, but embraced as her music rings more true to herself than ever. SKIPPING GIRL VINEGAR Expect to be uplifted by indie-folk raconteurs Skipping Girl Vinegar. Celebrated songwriters, the band has released three critically acclaimed albums that have each made many ‘Album of the Year’ lists, receiving extensive radio play. Known for their classic melodies, energy and warmth of their live show, they have thrilled audiences at many of Australia’s premier festivals including Bluesfest, Splendour In The Grass, Falls Festival, Woodford Folk Festival, Port Fairy Folk Music Festival and many more. This heartwarming band is a must-see experience.

THE AUDREYS The Audreys are a folk-rock act from Adelaide creating bittersweet songs with startling musicianship. Their first three records all won the ARIA award for Best Blues and Roots Album. Over the last ten years they've graced almost every major festival in Australia, toured Europe and North America, sold songs to films and television shows far and wide, written music for TV, theatre and even dance shows, hit the charts and gone gold. THE DEANS The Deans are the sound of modern, original soul.
SHOWCASE ARTISTS THE MELTDOWN The Meltdown is bold, brassy, twangy steam train of bumping backbeats and swinging shuffles. Then there’s that voice; sweet as honey. The voice is soul, but it’s country too and something else indefinable; like you heard it before but don’t know where…There are a lot of soul revival bands around, but The Meltdown’s angle is different. A lifetime of writing and experience is condensed into a golden set of songs and a hot new band. Great vibe, great players, great sound, but it’s the songs that are king here. Career highlights for the band so far have included opening for Charles Bradley (USA), The Budos Band (USA), Babylon Circus (FRA) and The Bamboos (AUS), as well as a string of raucous residencies at Melbourne venues, two Australian east coast tours and festival spots. In February 2015, The Seven Ups released their debut, self-titled album on limited edition yellow vinyl. The album has received great airplay both nationally and abroad.
THOMAS OLIVER Thomas Oliver is internationally recognised as one of the leading players of the Weissenborn lap-steel guitar and a multi-talented guitarist, songwriter and singer. In 2013 Oliver released the first full-length, all instrumental, all Weissenborn album, titled Beneath The Weissenborn. The album debuted at #6 in the NZ charts, received 5* reviews and sold out shows across New Zealand. His ability to write stirring lyrics and move between sweet melodic and grunty vocals has built an international audience from his home base in New Zealand with multiple European and Australia tours under his belt. THREE KINGS Already being described as a blues super group, Three Kings brings together a trio of this country’s most dedicated, authentic blues artists, with down and dirty, totally inspiring results. Officially formed in 2011 by Ian Collard (vocals, guitar, harmonica), Benny Peters (vocals and guitar), and Jason Liu Soon (drums), Three Kings’ self-titled debut album took out the award for Best Blues CD in The Age Victorian Music Awards only a fortnight after release. Three Kings’ hard-hitting, greasy blues style takes you on a joy ride through the back roads and juke joints of American music history. 37
SHOWCASE ARTISTS TOLKA Emerging out of the lively traditional music scene, Tolka encapsulates a sense of what it means to be playing traditional music in a contemporary context. In the last 3 years, Tolka have taken their unique blend of tunes and songs to audiences across Australia and the UK. Tolka recently recorded their second album which pays tribute to the band's varied influences including traditional Irish music and the music of the wider Australian folk scene. YIRRMAL New generation Indigenous Australian artist Yirrmal, from North-East Arnhem Land, is making an exciting entrance into the music scene. Inspired by heroes Yothu Yindi, Yirrmal is a refreshing singer- songwriter, fusing tradition and contemporary with class and passion. Performing as a solo artist, and with group Yirrmal & The Yolngu Boys. Yirrmal Marika, a young Yolngu man from the community of Yirrkala, is an aspiring songwriter and guitarist with a beautifully powerful voice, singing songs about his homeland and culture with feeling and depth beyond his years.

SAT NOV 14 @ MAX WATTS LATINAOTEAROA 9:30PM - 10:10PM
Latinaotearoa came from the concept of blending local New Zealand flavours with the colourful cultures of South America. Brazilian-born Auckland DJ Bobby Brazuka and Venezuelan singer Jennifer Zea create a unique live performance with Bobby’s Latin influenced soul-funk selections layered with Jennifer’s ravishing vocals. Added to this melting pot is multitalented musician and producer Isaac Aesili. Together they create a unique and truly legitimate Latin act with a local flavour, both bending and blending the traditional music of their homelands with the modern sounds of here and now.
