Welcome to AWME 2013 Heidi Victoria Minister for the Arts

In just six years, the Australasian Worldwide Music Expo has grown to be a goto event on the international music calendar – this year’s program is no exception. Bringing together musicians, programmers, bookers and industry representatives, AWME is a place for the global music community to learn from each other, to foster new connections and create opportunities. The exciting public program – which this year features performances by Indigenous Australian and international artists from Ireland to Ethiopia is also an opportunity for musicians from across the globe to connect with local audiences. The Victorian Government has played a role in the AWME story from the beginning and we are proud to support AWME 2013 as part of our ongoing commitment to building and strengthening Victoria’s contemporary music sector.

Tony Grybowski

CEO Australia Council for the Arts I’m very pleased to be welcoming you to the 6th annual Australasian Worldwide Music Expo. Every year, AWME’s reputation as a leading world and roots music event grows, and this year is no exception. The event provides a unique opportunity for industry collaborations and knowledge sharing, as well as showcasing a talented lineup of artists throughout the live music program. The 2013 program includes an incredibly diverse range of acts and speakers from around the world. From the internationally acclaimed Barefoot Divas, who will be sharing their special brand of music magic on Opening Night, to the wonderfully infectious rhythms of The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra who will get you dancing at the Closing Party, I have no doubt you will be impressed by the breadth and quality of this year’s artists. The Australia Council for the Arts is proud to be a principle partner of this event. I wish you a wonderful AWME 2013!

BLACKCHORDS•ADMIRAL FALLOW Acclaimed jewel of dark country blues Cash Savage And The Last Drinks stunning second LP The Hypnotiser released in August 2013 has garnered feature album on RRR, PBS, 2SER plus strong airplay on triple j, Radio National and ABC Radio however the true Cash Savage experience takes place on the stage, where the singer thrives on her audience, affecting crowds from country and city alike with a tonic of honesty, sincerity and raw emotion. As so often happens, a chance meeting, a random jam, results in something far more than just the forging of a new friendship. So it happened for Nick Milwright and Damian Cazaly, who after a fortuitous encounter in 2005, came to form Melbourne group Blackchords. Their resulting brand of darkly majestic pop has grown organically over the past seven years, as has their audience and acclaim, the band releasing their eponymous debut in 2009, touring Europe, garnering praise and award nominations both here and abroad.

It might seem natural to place Admiral Fallow beside certain purveyors of what’s become bracketed as nufolk, but the outfit is as much a new chapter in the continuing history of remarkable independent voices as it is aligning itself with topical trends. The end product is of an entirely organic design, and certainly not to be confused with coattailriding revisionists. Mànran's music is a unique and powerful blend of Gaelic and English, traditional and contemporary. The band is one of few worldwide to use both Highland and Uilleann pipes and combines these with accordion, fiddle, flute and a mix of drum and bass to create an infectious and recognisable sound.

Singersongwriter NGAIIRE, is building a reputation for herself as one of the country’s most unique and dynamic vocalists and performers. Ngaiire has an eclectic sonic identity that is uniquely hers, with great attention to vocal detail and layering. With her lyrical intelligence as well as her love for musical aesthetics, her debut album is a commanding entry into the music world, and there is no doubt Lamentations will put a flag in the ground as Ngaiire’s official arrival. The past three years have been busy for Melbourne doomcountry shimmyshakers Twin Beasts. Forming as The Toot Toot Toots in 2009 they have developed a solid reputation for their unique country blues sound and their frenetic and hyperenergetic live shows. Their debut album Outlaws, is a spaghettiwestern rockoperatic concept album. Changing their name to Twin Beasts, 2013 is shaping up to be a big year for the group as they prepare to release album number #2 with Producer Burke Reid. Filled with witticisms about the heartbreaks of daytoday life and an unhealthy obsession with the afterlife, Grizzly Jim Lawrie’s music is very much lyric focused. With a passion for words, Jim uniquely draws on the sounds of artists such as Bon Iver, Neil Young and Townes Van Zandt. Both solo and when backed with a band, Jim is a captivating performer.

Music of the Revolution

Often referred to as the ‘Black Elvis’, Roger Knox is a Gamilaroi man who grew up on the Toomelah Mission near Boggabilla on the NSW / QLD border. He started his musical career as a gospel singer, and later with his band Euraba has dedicated his life to sharing the gift of music with the world; spending much of his time playing to Aboriginal audiences in remote communities and prisons, as well as touring detention centres and Indian reservations in the US and Canada. In February this year, Knox along with the Pine Valley Cosmonauts released his first album in nine years, Stranger in My Land. Clinton Walker is an Australian writer best known for his works on popular music but with a broader interest in social and cultural history and theory. Chris Gill SUN 17 NOV - THE HIFI Chris Gill loves funk music. He loves it so much he started a funk record store 10 years ago in Melbourne. It is called Northside Records. It is the soul of Melbourne. Chris has been dj'ing in Fitzroy and around the world for well over 20 years, doing festivals and bar gigs, international tours, primary school fetes and the Thursday lunchtime slot on RRR radio. Fun can be found in the funniest places.

Barefoot Divas (Australia/New Zealand/PNG) Featuring Ursula Yovich, Emma Donovan, Whirimako Black, Maisey Rika, Merenia and Ngaiire OPENING CONCERT - THUR 14 NOV, ARTS CENTRE MELBOURNE

Coloured Stone THUR 14 NOV - DING DONG LOUNGE Formed in 1977 by Bunna Lawrie, lead singer and songwriter for the band, Coloured Stone’s music blends rock, ska and reggae. Over the years, the band has collaborated, performed and toured with many Australian and international artists including Midnight Oil, Leo Sayer, Jimmy Little, Paul Kelly, Angry Anderson, Salif Kaita, KD Lang, Iva Davis & Ice House, Shane Howard, and the Black Arm Band. Their latest album Dance to the Sun will be launched at AWME 2013.

Some of Australia's most acclaimed female Indigenous singer/ songwriters join together with their sisters from New Zealand and Papua New Guinea in a powerful symbolic collaboration. Their performance is a combination of spoken word poetry, storytelling and song. More than a concert, the show is a cultural experience and intimate disclosure about the lives of these talented performers and about finding commonality and strength in culture and language, as well as showcasing the phenomenal voices of the troupe. Blackchords FRI 15 NOV - DING DONG LOUNGE As so often happens, a chance meeting, a random jam, results in something far more than just the forging of a new friendship. Their release of A Thin Line in 2013 sees the band evolving and exploring, crawling out of the primordial ooze, growing legs and walking, running, towards the next stage in their growth and musical expansion. Cash Savage & The Last Drinks FRI 15 NOV - DING DONG LOUNGE Having spent the gulf between albums in country theatres, urban venues, the Famous Spiegeltent, Meredith Music Festival, Port Fairy Folk Festival and the Riverboats Music Festival, acclaimed jewel of dark country blues Cash Savage and The Last Drinks returned with their stunning second LP The Hypnotiser in August 2013. CHARLIE bucket SUN 17 NOV - LOUNGE DJ Charlie Bucket plays a wide range of funk, soul, hiphop, afrobeat, Latin, samba, house, disco and reggae. In August 2013 Charlie released his first single featuring NFA Jones and Nick Sheppard (The Clash) which received regular rotation on triple Jand was included on the 'Kiss my Wami' compilation.

Damien Dempsey (Ireland) THUR 14 NOV - THE HIFI The four years since the release of his album The Rocky Road have been busy for Damien Dempsey. In addition to writing and recording Almighty Love, Dempsey also collaborated with renowned Irish graffiti artist Maser on the project 'They Are Us'. Inspired by Dempsey's lyrics, Maser painted giant masterpieces of Dempsey's words on derelict buildings in Dublin. Since his first live outings in the mid1990's, Damien's gigs have seen him wow audiences across the globe. These outings have been captured on two recordings: Live at the Olympia and Live from Vicar Street. Earlier this year saw him take his show across Australia, playing a series of sellout shows all over the country. Dave Arden & Justin Brady SUN 17 NOV - LOUNGE MATINEE For millennia the great oral tradition of Indigenous storytelling has kept culture strong. As a Gunditjmara/Kokatha man David Arden, and Justin Brady carry forward this cultural practice with a collaboration of heartfelt stories underpinned by a beautifully expressive musical dynamic. Dereb the Ambassador (Ethiopia/Australia) SUN 17 NOV - THE HIFI Dereb Desalegn (aka Dereb the Ambassador) is well known on the streets of Addis Ababa as one of Ethiopia’s most respected singers. Born in Ethiopia, Dereb grew up amongst a family of musicians, completely immersed in his home country’s rich melange of sounds, rhythms and musical styles. In 2003 Dereb recorded his first solo album Korkorow Yalew from which the hit single Wollo, reached number one on the Ethiopian charts. Dereb has since toured in America, England, Asia, New Zealand and Australia where he collaborated with producer Tony Buchen, to put together his latest project. The first album under this new title, released in 2011, was recorded using pre1970’s recording equipment, and is influenced by the warm, funky sounds of great Ethiopian artists from of the 60’s and 70’s.

Showcase Artists Derek M SAT 16 NOV - THE HIF Born and raised in Liverpool UK, Derek M has been causing waves within the local music scene since moving to Australia in 2001. Apart from being an accomplished DJ and radio show presenter on PBS 106.7fm he is also the mind behind the Heartical HiFi project. Since its inception in 2002, Heartical HiFi has taken reggae and dub to a new level while presenting the music through its traditional medium - a high powered, custom built sound system. Grizzly Jim Lawrie SAT 16 NOV - TOFF IN TOWN A regular on the Melbourne music scene, Jim Lawrie has been a drummer for about ten years, most notably for Melbourne indie band Eagle and the Worm. Often being mistaken for Henry Wagons, Jim has opted away from the high paying perks of the celebrity impersonator industry and has turned his attention to his own styling of acoustic driven songwriting. Hollie Smith (Aotearoa/New Zealand) FRI 15 NOV - THE HIFI Hollie Smith is one of New Zealand 's most predominant and celebrated musicians. After working with numerous bands including Trinity Roots, Fat Freddys Drop and Detroit dance legend Recloose, she was approached by NZ royalty Don Mcglashan to perform on a movie soundtrack single Bathe in The River that topped the NZ charts and became one of the biggest and iconic singles in NZ history. Whilst studying in France in 2005, Maya collaborates with musician Carlo de Sacco, founding member of the group Grèn Sémé who has a large influence on her developing music career. With a young group of students from Reunion Island based in Montpellier, Maya begins her musical adventure. Melbourne Ska Orchestra SAT 16 NOV - THE HIFI In 2003, the time was right. A worldrecord attempt to have the largest number of horn players on stage at the same time playing the skaskank saw a slew of musicians take the stage at St Kilda’s Gershwin Room, and although nobody remembered to check if the record had actually been set, from this soldout performance the Melbourne Ska Orchestra was born. Assembled from some of Australia’s preeminent names in Ska and Reggae and fronted by inimitable frontman Nicky Bomba (Bomba, Bustamento, John Butler Trio), the soaring popularity of the band is seeing the MSO fast becoming a fixture of Australia’s musical landscape. Now, after more than a decade of soldout shows and electrifying festival appearances the MSO has come together to produce a different kind of record. Their selftitled debut album showcases the versatility of a genre that has influenced some of the most venerated names in music, from Bob Marley to Gwen Stefani, as well as demonstrating a uniquely Australian vision of the exuberance and freewheeling colour of contemporary Ska. This is music at its most entertaining; vibrant, surprising, and with a beat to shame the Devil. This is Ska.

Perez aka Nahuatl Jaguar has been producing music under the name of Nahuatl Soundsystem and is a crucial part in the global nucumbia movement, pioneering the ‘Aztek style of Dub’ - a clash between the original rhythms of the warrior Mexica culture translated into deep IDM and future bass music. In an age of dancing robots and the electric toothbrush, the Quarry Mountain Dead Rats are taking it back to a simpler time, where the pickin’ was fast and the banjo was king. With fire in their bellies, these musical comrades hailing from Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula bring their raw and gritty version of bluegrass kicking and hollering into the modern day. The influence of oldtime mountainmusic combined with rock‘n’roll sensibilities make the Quarry Mountain Dead Rats an act that make you sit up, take notice and come back for more. Long live the Dead Rat. Richard Frankland & The Charcoal Club THUR 14 NOV - THE HIFI Richard Frankland wrote his first song when he was 13 years old. Since forming in 1990, The Charcoal Club has been delivering a unique mix of blues and folk music with a repertoire that covers the occasional love ballad to a fist pumping activist anthem and represents the vast inspirational experiences of Richard’s life. Richard’s lyrics are poignant and, at times, raw reflecting his pride and love for his family, heritage and land. Selfdescribed as ‘summer sounds’, their style is a unique blend of pop, funk, RnB, reggae and anything else they feel inspired to throw in the mix. These boys don't look like easing up any time soon with the recent release of their first 3track EP titled When Life Gives You Lemons. Zeek Power and Clint Wallace lead the band vocally while also holding the rhythm on guitars, their trademark vocal sound and mix of gospelflavoured harmonies. Clint is a familiar face as exbass guitarist of wellknown Rockhamptonborn band, Busby Marou; and Zeek is the latest YouTube sensation with his solo work under his name ‘Zeek Power’. Former Rookie band members, bass guitarist Phil Moore and drummer Ash Moore hold the heartbeat of the band together.

Showcase Artists Sola Rosa (Aotearoa/New Zealand) FRI 15 NOV - THE HIFI With six albums under his belt, a raft of accolades and well over a decade of producing genresplitting music, Andrew Spraggon’s work as Sola Rosa has cemented him as one of the world’s most exciting and versatile producers. From a humble, selfreleased one man project, Sola Rosa has grown to a live collective of international repute. Successfully melding hip hop, reggae, jazz, latin, soul and funk, the group have never sat comfortably in one box, but with Spraggon’s guidance, that restlessness has been channelled into six succinct albums.

Since forming in late 2010, Sweet Jean has built a reputation for their evocative songwriting, razorsharp harmonies, and stirring live performances as a duo and with their band. As the AU Review put it, Sweet Jean "can break your heart one minute and mend it the next. The duo has a natural ability to transport their audience to the heart of their songs.”

Sons of Zion (Aotearoa/New Zealand) FRI 15 NOV - THE HIFI With their fusion of reggae, rock, dub and roots, Sons of Zion are a talented 6piece band, comprising of young Rangitahi from various locations in New Zealand. Sons Of Zion are committed to making music that you can't help but skank to.

The Cactus Channel SUN 17 NOV - THE HIFI What began as experimentation, developed into outright insubordination - an out of control funk orchestra with the momentum of a runaway train who could count The Dap Kings’ Tom Brenneck and soul legend Charles Walker as fans. Their most recent release, Wooden Boy was recorded by the tenpiece, all born in the 90's and raised on the internet. Yet somehow, this astonishing followup to last year's ravereviewed debut, Haptics, sounds like it could have been recorded in the 1970's, or possibly in the distant future.

Stan and the Earth Force (Vanuatu) SAT 16 NOV - THE HIFI Stan & the Earth Force create a powerful combination of original roots reggae music. Hailing from Vanuatu, the group delivers dynamic live shows, featuring the unique voice of composer and lead singer Stanleyson Antas. In Cambodia, The CSP has landed like an unexpected meteor and has made an immediate impact on enthusiastic local audiences with its festivallike live shows. To date, the CSP has performed in venues ranging from chic city clubs to rural villages, schools and orphanages, even an elephant’s 50th birthday party! The Deans THUR 14 NOV - DING DONG LOUNGE The Deans are a Melbournebased contemporary rock and soul band playing critically acclaimed original music. They have been described as 'explosively rocky one moment yet sweetly soulful the next.' Soulful harmonies, blistering guitar and pounding rhythms are all part of their arsenal. The Orbweavers THUR 14 NOV - TOFF IN TOWN Marita Dyson and Stuart Flanagan formed The Orbweavers in 2006, drawing on a love of history, natural sciences, museums and archives. 2009 saw the release of their debut album Graphite & Diamonds, a dark and dulcet collection of songs from the abandoned knitting mills of Brunswick, Melbourne: chiming pins and needle guitar, haunted violin, and the Moon.

Showcase Artists The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra SUN 17 NOV - THE HIFI Inspired by the infectious afrobeat music of Nigeria and its neighbours, The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra delivers a homespun version of contemporary African funk. This mammoth ensemble comprises seventeen musicians handpicked from Melbourne’s music scene. With the afrobeat movement of the 60’s and 70’s making a worldwide resurgence in live venues and clubs alike, The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra’s powerful MCs and tribal rhythms are the modernday “musical weapon” that Fela Kuti conceived of. Twin Beasts (Formerly The Toot Toot Toots) SAT 16 NOV - TOFF IN TOWN The past three years have been busy for Melbourne doomcountry shimmyshakers Twin Beasts. Forming as The Toot Toot Toots in 2009 at a bar on the spur of the moment they have developed a solid reputation for their unique country blues sound and their frenetic and hyperenergetic live shows. 2013 marked the release of their debut album Outlaws, a spaghettiwestern rockoperatic concept album set in the fictional gold rush town of Gomorrah Fields and follows the story of émigré Eli Rayne and the vengeance and bloodshed that shadows his arrival. The Shaolin Afronauts SUN 17 NOV - THE HIFI The mysterious afrosoul of The Shaolin Afronauts first echoed across the dance floors of Australia in 2008. Heavily inspired by the sounds of 1970’s West Africa, Ethiopia and the pioneering avantgarde jazz artists of the same period, the Shaolin Afronauts draw on the this highly innovative and sometimes volatile era in music, using it as inspiration to create music with the same fire and intensity. Their spirited performances have fast gained a reputation as some of the most exciting live shows around.

Whiri T Aka (Aotearoa/New Zealand) FRI 15 NOV - THE HIFI 2013 saw five strong wahine Maori join together to form the Aotearoa based a cappella group Whiri TŪ Aka. Performing only in Te reo Maori, the group use only their voices to create a full range of timbres and textures. Te Reo Maori is a language built for music, and music is built into the language. The essence of their music is the traditional values, creativity, innovation, uniqueness, authenticity, quality and originality that is brought together with a strong Maori cultural influence and elements that are at the forefront of Maori music.
