AW Rail Services

Who are we?

AW Rail Services have been delivering rail projects for several years right across the Rail & Construction sector.

Our extensive rail experience of some 120 years, combining decades of hands-on knowledge, providing building enhancements and maintenance solutions, improving infrastructure for passengers and operators, delivering major projects, and fulfilling long-term maintenance contracts really sets us apart.

Preparation for any project on the railways, no matter how small is one of our highest priorities. Our management teams excel at each stage of a project, whether that is procuring materials or carefully selecting the right staff, with the skills and knowledge to carry out the works safely, on time and within budget.

We operate an innovative and collaborative environment, often finding new solutions to working practices, particular in the challenging environments that present themselves on the railway. Many of our clients request the same people and teams to carry out further projects for them, building long term relationships that provide consistency and value for money.

AW Rail prides itself on being able to provide a turnkey solution for our client’s projects from conception through to completion.

Our services are varied from structural maintenance on tunnels, bridges, foot crossings, signal gantries, to station refurbishment, platform enhancements, civils works on and around the track, the mechanism management of lineside vegetation and further afield, painting of all types of structures and lastly but perhaps most importantly the provision of rail labour, not only supporting the projects we carry out for our projects but for the provision of labour to other clients.

Health & Safety is a key responsibility for everyone working at AW Rail and all those that we work with. Every single member of staff is qualified to carry out the works assigned to them, and we constantly monitor any changes within the industry that could affect this.

Our in-house management and project delivery teams provide an industry-leading culture of ownership, reliability and continuity and have successfully delivered projects of all sizes and complexities

We have a strong working ethos with our employees and contractors and focus on adherence to industry and association standards is a given. This gives our employees expertise, confidence, and safety in the roles they carry out for our clients. Our company holds current RISQS certification via audit. Our Health, safety and quality system runs in line with our ISO 9001, 14001 & 45001 systems.

More importantly, it shows our clients that we value our employees and the safety within the rail environment extoling Network Rails mantra of “Everyone Home Safe Every Day”

Through the many projects we have delivered and the staffing we have supplied, we have built up a confident and meaningful relationship with many Tier 1 contractors to Network Rail along with Network Rail directly.

Over the years we have worked with and continued to support some of the largest PC’s for Network Rail delivering rail projects where we have consistently excelled and gained repeat and new business, time and time again.

Station Maintenance - Buildings

We can provide numerous trades and services for the maintenance of all types of railway buildings

Across the UK rail network there are stations of all sizes and representing a significant part of Networks Rails asset portfolio.

Station buildings are often subject to extremes of usage or weather due to their locations, this means that they become dilapidated quickly over time meaning that at some point they will need renovation work, either in small areas or full refurbishment.

At AW Rail we are used to working on all types of station buildings whether that be a simple painting job to a more complex and planned refurbishment, strip out or rebuild we can help with your planned or schedule of works.

Utilising qualified staff able to work within the rail environment (PTS Operatives) we have completed project after project over the years. No job is too big or too small whether it’s something as straightforward as a broken pane of glass in a window or as extensive as a complete refit of a canopy, restoring ornate and possibly listed structures sympathetically, upgrades to electrical systems, car park refurbishments or the installation of station lighting we have it covered.

With many station buildings requiring updating to meet the requirements of a changing population and improvements in technology we are ideally suited to offer a diverse range of services, installation of DDA compliant ramps and handrails, help points, PID’s, PA’s and car park improvements including the installation of EV charge points, solar charging systems for lighting and more.

Often station buildings and their environs house several other facets, this maybe a retail outlet, offices or in some cases accommodation, a railway yard or depot, whatever the requirement that these assets have AW Rail can carry out these works.

Keeping people safe on stations doesn’t stop at the installation of preventative barriers or guard rails, witches hats etc – All stations have a considerable amount of electrical elements to keep them functioning, our M&E teams regularly conduct electrical safety inspections on anything from station lighting to full fuse board substation switching gear.

AW Rail believe in preparation and prevention with regards to maintenance and understand the daily needs of a job or organisation that requires high or low maintenance and planning for any eventuality is a must in today’s economic climate.

The level of planned maintenance is tailored to the specific needs of our clients across a broad range of sectors, and we have the capabilities, resources and knowledge to deliver time and time again.

Structural works to ageing platforms has seen us carry out the installation of temporary propping for trestle coping stones that are beginning to fail and in need of support until a permanent fix is installed. Station ACO drainage installing and resurfacings to tarmacadam areas or concrete pads laid.

Our teams at AW Rail complete station platform maintenance out of hours, reducing the necessity to close a station during operational hours, with our extensive knowledge and planning of works on the rail network we can also arrange for any line blockages or possessions to take place to ensure the safety of all our operatives carrying out these works.

Steel Works

We are capable of completing all types of steel works across the rail network.

The railway network is made up of many different structural components. One of the main components of this and one that needs constant maintenance is steel. Here at AW Rail we have been completing reactive and planned maintenance on steel structures for a number of years, across many different parts of the rail network.

We have the capability, experience, coverage, resources, plant, and equipment to deliver operational excellence through our most important resource – our highly motivated and qualified teams who time and time again outperform the expectation of our clients.

We are innovative, collaborative and always ensuring that we are up to date with the latest specifications issued by Network Rail for the supply of materials. All in all, we have the experience to deliver steelwork repairs often finding and offering a variety of solutions for damaged or aging infrastructure.

Whether that be a simple structure expansion joint, a waterproofing system, installation of a signal gantry, corrosion works, structural replacement of a key element, viaducts, handrails, balustrades, bridge parapets, ladders, cable trays, signage barriers, base plates, or services such as blasting, cleaning and mechanical preparation for repainting.

We are experts in working with steel or Iron structures, and competent in refurbing with GRP, FRP, aluminium or stainless-steel solutions. Within AW Rail our design and survey teams can assist with site walkouts and design ideas or provide a full-service including GA’s, structural calculations and assessments and provision of a final design.

All our operatives are experienced in disruptive possessions and trackside works, undergo regular onsite testing, and are kept up to date with the latest advances in steel repairs, preservation, and replacement thereof. Of course, all are PTS trained and qualified to work on the railway.

Within the rail industry there are specific requirements for protective coatings as part of the networks preventative maintenance programme. Any coatings applied to steel or iron structures must be tested and certificated to Network Rails standards.

Surface preparation of steel is key, and we have key staff that are ICORR qualified and have many years’ experience working in the rail industry, our project teams have the capabilities to undertake and deliver complex projects on schedule, to the highest standards and within budget.

Being pioneers of innovation we have become more involved in the installation of GRP products to provide the best and most cost-effective solution for our clients. Replacing traditional steel walkways on gantries to the installation of full staircases.

Vegetation Maintenance

At AW Rail we provide a wide range of services for the maintenance & management of vegetation

AW Rail has considerable experience in railway vegetation management and supply teams across the UK directly to Network Rail and many of its Principal Contractors. We’ve tended to many miles of railway and lineside across the country, keeping vegetation successfully managed at these locations. Our primary focus is to ensure critical parts of the track are maintained to ensure safe train operation and the safety of railway staff, pedestrians, and track maintenance personnel.

We have the equipment, machinery and a highly skilled workforce that can tackle any vegetation site clearance project in a range of environments both at ground level and at height.

We supply experienced and skilled teams of chainsaw and brush cutter operators for manual vegetation or scrub removal, used to working on and around trackside, bridges, roadways, access points, stations, car parks etc – LANTRA Trained

We can also supply qualified personnel in the use of herbicide and weed control applications, that comply with all Health & Safety and Environmental standards –trained in PA1 / PA6 Herbicide application.

AW Rail carry out all works with a sensitive approach to all flora and fauna and have invested heavily in the training of key staff to identify areas that may need a more careful and managed approach to de-vegetation.

Where it is appropriate and safe to do so, we can move smaller branches and vegetation matter to nearby locations to support and create habitats for wildlife such as hedgehogs, amphibians, and reptiles. Larger branches can be chipped or mulched on site or removed to safe loading areas for further disposal.

Our aim is to offer a complete package of vegetation removal work. This covers minor felling, cutting, stump removal/treatment and treating of vegetation material to the removal of chippings.

While we endeavour to carry out all work while trains continue to run, in some instances, such as when the work is near power lines or overhanging branches pose a threat to the safe operation of the railway, rail services may need to be suspended, or work can be scheduled to avoid disruption. We have extensive experience in carrying out line blockages across the network and gaining safe access to the track.

Should clearance involve trees owned by line-side neighbours, landowners etc that overhang the rail network’s fences or boundaries, we seek to maintain good working relations for both our clients and Network Rail by public interaction from the start.

AW Rail are very much reactive and understand that you may need an emergency or disaster response solution – something we have provided time and time again throughout the years. Our teams are standing by and ready to respond to stormrelated tree and branch clearance, resolving and removing tree debris as safely and quickly as possible.

Whilst carrying out any vegetation works our teams can also simultaneously conduct visual fence or other boundary inspections to identify any damage that may have occurred due to invasive vegetation or fallen branches, further reducing your operational costs.
