Welcome to Rad Women of Philadelphia!
This book was created by a third grade class at Greene Street Friends School in Philadelphia. We have been studying rad women through the books Rad American Women and Rad Women Worldwide written by Kate Schatz and illustrated by Miriam Klein Stahl. Inspired by these books, we wanted to make a book of rad women who live and do powerful work in our own city. We use rad (from the Latin word meaning from the root) to describe someone who is uprooting injustice in our society through organizing, art, or education. It could also be someone who did something for the first time or someone who is just super cool and awesome! We define woman as anyone who defines herself as a woman. We share the stories of these women’s work as our own rad act, resisting systems that keep women from feeling and being powerful, and keep young people from learning about brilliant and influential women.
