“KIPP taught me how to work hard, never give up, and ask questions if you don't get something. And if you do get it, ask another questionmaybe you'll understand even more.” CHARITY WATSON WHITTIER COLLEGE, CLASS OF 2016 KIPP ACADEMY OF OPPORTUNITY ALUMNA

on the cover: Charity with her parents, siblings, and extended family members. their example and continue our work to raise the quality of education both within our schools and across Los Angeles. Today, over 7,400 students and alumni attend our schools or participate in our KIPP Through College program, all with the goal of supporting our students through college graduation so they can become leaders within their communities. We were pleased that KIPP LA Prep, like KIPP RaĂces Academy in 2015, was awarded the National Blue Ribbon Schools Award. KIPP LA Prep was one of only 33 schools in California and one of only two schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District to receive this distinction. A combination of exceptional school leadership, a strong commitment to teacher training and development, and a focus on the whole child led to both KIPP

Looking ahead with a renewed commitment to our students, families, and communities, we still have much more work to do. With the increased demand for high-quality public education in the communities of South and East Los Angeles, KIPP LA is growing to 20 schools by 2020, at which point we will serve approximately 12,000 students and alumni. Thank you for your commitment to the children of South and East Los Angeles. I hope our 2016 Annual Report will show you the impact of your investment and inspire you to continue to support our schools, students, and communities in the year to come. With gratitude,

LA Prep and KIPP RaĂces receiving this prestigious honor. KIPP LA continues to be engaged in positively impacting the communities we serve. This past year, we have strengthened our relationships with local community leaders and organizations through the work of our Family Ambassadors

WHY I SUPPORT

KIPP LA "Justice and opportunity have a clear intersection in education. This is particularly true in lowincome communities, where the tremendous inherent talents of the community are under-invested. There are no simple answers. There are, however, a set of traits that seem to significantly increase the odds of success for students. KIPP LA’s approach embodies all these traits. Their impact on South and East Los Angeles communities cannot be overstated." ZAC GUEVARA KIPP LA BOARD MEMBER & SUPPORTER

KIPP LA is strengthening communities and increasing economic opportunities for students in South and East Los Angeles.

JUSTICE FOR OUR

COMMUNITY "There is a lot of injustice in the world still. Not everyone is treated equally, and that’s not right. That’s why I want to be a supreme court justice. I want to help people get the justice they need. KIPP has helped me see that with hard work I can be anything I want and I can change my community." ASHLEY A. KIPP SCHOLAR ACADEMY ALUMNA Ashley is currently attending the prestigious Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts on a full scholarship.

MANY OF OUR STUDENTS ARE THE FIRST IN THEIR FAMILY TO GO TO COLLEGE. They're dealing with financial, social, and emotional concerns while having to navigate the academic landscape. We are here to mentor and support our students to help mitigate those obstacles. LONNESHIA WEBB SENIOR MANAGER OF KIPP THROUGH COLLEGE

Some parents come to me looking for the answers for their student. Instead of giving them the answer, we work together to identify the best options. WE ARE A TEAM, AND I’M HERE TO GIVE PARENTS THE RESOURCES AND SUPPORT THEY NEED TO MAKE THE BEST DECISION FOR THEIR STUDENT. VE'CARTIER HUBBLE-JOHNSON HIGH SCHOOL PLACEMENT COUNSELOR

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

TEACHER

TEACHER-LEADER

Teachers work directly with school leadership on targeted instructional skills and lesson planning and receive ongoing professional development from our regional academic team.

As teachers exhibit exemplary leadership skills, they are given expanded responsibility as grade level or subject chairs. These emerging leaders also attend leadership training through the KIPP Foundation and facilitate professional development for other teachers.

KIPP LA’S LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT programs reflect our belief that continuous improvement fosters a supportive, structured, and dynamic learning environment for our students.

ASSISTANT SCHOOL LEADER & DEAN Assistant School Leaders and Deans partner with School Leaders to support instructional development, student affairs, and culture-building. Ongoing professional development trains them to become exceptional leaders in education.

OF PARENT TRAINING, EDUCATION, AND ENGAGEMENT ANNUALLY

KIPP LA partners with our families to invest in the skills and knowledge to support their children to and through college. Families are empowered to make their voices heard and be agents of change in their community.

DEVELOPING LEADERS Families participate in Civic Engagement and Advocacy by leading voter registration efforts and educating other families about important issues impacting their children and community.

In KIPP LA’s Family Ambassadors Program, parent leaders passionately advocate for their children's education and our communities by acting as representatives for their schools at political and neighborhood events, and by mobilizing other families to advocate for important issues facing our community.

EMPOWERING FAMILIES KIPP LA's Parent Engagement Program helps families navigate high school and college options, equipping them with tools and information centered around academics, socio-emotional support, and financial literacy to make the best decisions for their children.

Across KIPP LA schools, families are welcomed into the school to volunteer, participate in family reading time and support a variety of school based activities.
