Hi Everyone My mystery photo challenge last month was me at Eldee Station, overlooking the Mundi Mundi plains in September 2015 before I joined the club. Richard Destefanis was close-ish by guessing Mt Oxley nr Bourke. Well, he was closer than anyone else guessed :) Hope some of you have managed to get out in the cars now that state-travel restrictions have been lifted. I have been getting out in the FJ getting used to it offroad and sussing out the areas for improvement. As ever with 4-wheeling, I have a long and expensive list of items to go in, most significant of which will be a front locker.

I was slightly disappointed to see that no one attempted last month's cover challenge provided by Bruce Mann. Since that’s the case, it will have to remain a mystery I am afraid unless someone wants to have a go this month? Just head back to last month's magazine for a look.

We had a late entry by Doug Stewart this month with his Sandy Blight Junction report from last year. I have also provided another ‘filler’ trip report from 2011, re-printing Stuart and Kim’s Snowys Plains trip from 2011 as written by Mark Kortink.

During travels of the parched landscape up nearth Lithgow I dropped in to check out the newly re-vamped blast furnace ruins. It’s worth a visit if you’re up in the area next.

PRESIDENT REPORT JOHN RINALDO

HI Everyone,

Hope you are all keeping well and I’m sure ready to break the shackles and get back out to the great outdoors.

It is very exciting news that we have been able to open up the club calendar to trips and I have noticed the registrations for the trips are filling fast. My advice would be to book onto to any trips as soon as you can to avoid disappointment. Also please book for the Club Trophy weekend and the club Christmas Party as soon as possible, so we can start to prepare for the amount of members attending these events.

The club is now going into a new financial year. I call on members to consider standing for a position on the club committee. Our club has over 222 members and can only run efficiently with a dedicated Committee. If you are interested in giving a small amount of time to the management of the club, please speak to any member of the committee for advice and please advise the club Secretary Harold or myself as soon as possible. Nominations must be received by September for the election of the committee at the AGM in October.

Unfortunately, again we will not be having the AWDC month meeting this month (July). I have copied the latest reply from the Management of Forestville RSL club:

Hello John, The good news is that restrictions are being eased. However, we do have to use caution when dealing with larger crowds. Due to the short time frame, I would like to hold off on the July meetings. I will have to discuss this with Ian and Malcolm to see how we are going to manage large group bookings moving forward.

I will write back to you in the next week or so with our plan. Thank you for your understanding.‘

VICE PRESIDENT REPORT IRVING UNDERWOOD Dear Members,

It has been a month of relative quiet. Not a real great deal to report other than we, have been able to socialise with a few members of the Club, notably, Dave and Lisa Knight, Jim and Libby Polson, Di and Danny Kildare, Scott and Sandra Parkin.

The date of the Christmas party has been set some months ago and is 14 and 15 November. One of the main points received from the recent survey on the Christmas party was lack of social events. So please hop onto the website and register. The venue has been narrowed to two and will be discussed at our next Management Committee meeting. It is not far from Sydney.

Future meetings and activities: As we are still being affected by the virus and a return date for Club meetings has not yet been approved, future speakers have not been locked in. However as soon as I have been notified of the return date, I shall be back in touch with future guests.

As usual, if you have any suggestions on presentations to the Club members for our monthly meetings, please forward them to me at vicepresident@awdc.com.au.

Gidday Last month’s photo was Palm Beach from Barrenjoey Lighthouse, looking south. Ian Clare was the first in, so well done. If you haven't been there put it on your walking list. Only way up these days is by walking the 4WD track.

Renewals reminders went out last week and so far we have had 218 members renew which is fantastic. Don’t forget you need to be financial to participate in club trips and events.

Not much else is happening on the web front but planning a few trips away so watch the calendar for some up and coming events. There seems to be a few people with the same idea. Had a few calls from other members looking for assistance in trip planning, ie how long does it take from A to B, where should I stop, what’s to see along the way? More than happy to help as are lots of other club members. Just drop a post in our FB page or trips forum or send an email to anyone on the committee. We’re all here to help.

THE LATEST NEWS We're heading bush tomorrow, hence the July newsletter's arrival being a little early. Thanks to the Covid-19 situation we're confining this trip to NSW-only, taking in all the different topography that's available: coastal, mountains, agricultural land, forests, arid plains, rivers and desert.

We're testing Kumho's new MT71 M/T tyre and some camping kit on this trip. We're also hoping to catch up with some OTA Supporters en route. One of our Supporters came across historic footage of the original Madigan Expedition, so we've added that to our destination report.

In June we updated Buyers Guide entries for the Toyota HiLux and Fortuner, Jeep Compass, Mazda BT-50 and Hino GT 4x4 truck. Also, we previewed the next generation Huber/AL-KO hybrid motorhome chassis. Huber has also produced an electric-drive LandCruiser 70 Series for mining companies.

On the driving light front we tested Stedi's powerful 28-inch ST3303 light bar and Lazer's 750 Elite pair.

Lazer also produces a range of grille-insert light kits and brackets for roof mounting light bars.

We've updated our GVM-upgrade story and incorporated Tough Dog's latest upgrade kits.

Hope you can get away for some much-postponed bush tripping!

Income – one new member, one advertising receipt and some minor shop sales.

Expenses – MYOB charge, credit card fees and depreciation.

Membership fees for FY21 totalling $6,662 were received in May and June.

Since the last magazine things have moved on and this month there is a calendar worth looking at!

There are trips coming up, if everything stays open, of all sorts. Rob Cammell has put up our first outback trip from Broken Hill south. Mark Kortink has put up several C grade weekenders. The Remote First Aid course and Understanding your Vehicle course have been put back on the agenda. And of course the Christmas Party and Trophy.

Those of you out of practise with reading E-mails should find your inboxes now require checking. Of the events released so far demand has been high. The best way to get on the exact trip you want is to run your own!

As well as looking after ourselves with the extra demands 4WD imposes on trips please remember to be Covid safe on trips.

TRIP GRADINGS ALL WHEEL DRIVE CLUB Grade A – Extremely Difficult Suitable for very experienced drivers who want a challenging trip with extreme track conditions.

Vehicles must be equipped with suitable modifications such as snorkel, high ground clearance, significant wheel articulation,over sized tyres and at least one diff locker. Both driver and vehicle must be prepared to handle situations that test their ability. Specialised recovery equipment may be required.

Grade C – Moderate Suitable for experienced drivers with unmodified vehicles, may involve soft sand, steep hills, washaways, bog holes, ruts, mud, snow, slippery tracks and deeper creek crossings.

Grade B – Moderate to Difficult Suitable for experienced drivers only. Vehicles to have increased ground clearance and wheel articulation. May involve very steep hills, large washaways, mud, rock steps, deep ruts, soft sand, difficult creek crossings, deep bog holes and deep snow which may involve winching and other specialised recoveries. Both driver and vehicle must have the ability to handle situations.

Grade E – Very Easy / Social Little or no four wheel driving involved, driving on unsealed roads. Trips usually designed for touring, camping and social events. May involve easy to get to base camp then optional four wheel driving from there.

As approved by the AWDC Committee 27th August 2009

Grade D – Relatively Easy Suitable for all Club vehicles. May involve sand, mud, forest tracks, moderate hills and shallow creeks.

Grade X – Exploratory Exploratory, generally suitable for experienced drivers as the degree of difficulty is often unknown. Enquire with the Trip Leader.

This trip followed on from the Petermann Ranges Trip of June 2019 reported in October 2019 BTB Magazine pages 62 to 71. It also covered similar ground to another trip in July 2019 reported in November 2019 BTB Magazine pages 24 to 26.

This report is therefore mainly photographs.

Leaving three vehicles behind at Kaltukatjara, the remaining five crossed the border heading west.

The Mt Liebig range late afternoon from the Gary Junction Road. Stunning scenery and "big skies" along with the lack of obvious human intrusions is what makes travelling in Central Australia so special.

Sandy Blight - What a delight ! (continued) Len Beadell's Gunbarrel Grader and a section of Blue Streak rocket are a couple of the items displayed outside the Giles Weather Station and museum which contains many interesting artefacts.

Bundabiddy Rockhole is a compulsory stop for morning tea or lunch when you come by. This is a special site providing permanent water which was important for the local people who now live at the nearby Ngaanyatjarra speaking community of Tjurkurla.

A higher level pool could be seen above the base to Michael decided to scramble up to have a look.

Second night camp under the gorgeous desert oaks at the same location as last years AWDC trip - thanks for the GPS coordinates Steve.

Plenty of chances to stretch legs at termite mounds, old wells and photogenic trees.

The road looks like this for the majority of the 300km.

The loose steep side-track up the Sir Frederick Range was a welcome topographical interlude.

Len Beadell's book "Beating about the Bush" (one of 7 books in the series) tells the story of the making of this road in Len's typical style.

Len Beadell plaques (replicas placed in 2000) are regular features on trees, posts and rocks. Keeping eyes peeled for the next one takes a bit of concentration. Plaques celebrate crossing the State Border, Tropic of Capricorn or simply the number of miles of road built.

Walking up to the rocky top of the Davenport Hills, above Camp 3, revealed spectacular 360 degree views out across the sand hill plain, spotted with desert oaks on another glorious day.

We were travelling through some special places, but without local indigenous guides as we had on the Petermann section of our trip, we could only guess at the history and culture we were missing.

Turn off to camp 3/4, just 50m to a stand of mature desert oaks nestling under the Davenport Hills. Staying for two nights let us relax, cook a lamb roast, climb the sandy and rocky hills and go for a walk in the desert. The extra night was originally planned to ensure we reached our next fuel stop on Monday when the fuel bowser was open, but I'd recommend a rest day in the desert whenever possible.

Michael and Ruth drove off from Camp 3, planning a rapid repatriation to the big smoke.

We heard later they made it to Alice Springs after a very long day.

The historic Teitkens Tree is now becoming part of the desert again, while Mount Leisler at 700m altitude, but only 200m above the plain, bears witness.

We reached the Gary Junction Road, but due to more "surveying history" the location of Sandy Blight Junction itself is marked by a tall post 100m north of the main road intersection.

It was coming back from our side trip into Walungurru (Kintore) for fuel and an ice cream, that we spent an unplanned hour (or more) on the side of the road securing the roof rack back onto the Triton, after it came adrift.

A combination of rivets and bolts held it together until Chris & Margaret made it to Alice Springs some days later.

Sandy Blight - What a delight ! (continued) The scenery of Mt Liebig and Haasts Bluff on the right side of the road is dominating as we speed east then south over the hours on the main road. The scenery and light was every changing and so beautiful.

Sandy Blight - What a delight ! (continued) The Gary Junction Road is wide, straight fast and carries traffic and freight to the communities of Ikuntji, Papunya, Mt Liebig, Walungurru and further into Western Australia.

Camping is restricted even though it is a long section.

Is this the best use for a Nissan bonnet?

We did not make the side trip to the Ikuntji Art Centre at Ikuntji (Haasts Bluff Community). Something for next time.

Camp 5 was in a large layby off the Gary Junction Road east of Mt Liebig. The next day we purchased art at the excellent Papunya Art Centre, centre of the Western Desert Art Movement. Then we continued on to have a beer at Glen Helen Resort ending our six days on the road from Kaltukatjara (Docker River). A trip recommended to anyone who likes the ambience of Central Australia.

Trip Report

Easter Huts of the Snowy Plains People & Vehicles:Stuart Milburn (Leader) & Kim -Nissan Patrol Ross & Sally Shaw—Toyota Prado Simon & Penny Hunter with Jeremy & Rebecca (Verbal Report) – Toyota Prado Gary & CJ Wallis with Georgia & Amber – Toyota Landcruiser Neil Follett (Tail End Charlie) – Toyota 80 Series Mark Kortink (Author) – Mitsubishi Pajero Friday 25th We departed from the BP on Antil Street at 11am in good weather and drove through Canberra with an interesting tour-guide quality commentary from Stuart and Kim who used to be locals.

On leaving Canberra we headed into the Brindabellas and aired down eventually stopping beside a pleasant river for lunch.

Trip - Easter Huts (Cont’d) After lunch we followed Brindabella Road for a while then turned off and followed the power lines, a muddy business. We then rally drove for a few hours through a mixture bush and grassland still more or less following the power lines.  Boundary Rd.  Broken Cart Fire Trail.  Long Plain Rd .The plan was to camp at Blue Waterholes Camping Ground, but everything was jam packed. Stuart took exception to a Subaru driver who took exception to us squeezing past her on the road.

We went on to Cooinbil Camping Ground which was full of horses and their people but had a great spot for us to set up camp.

We had a pleasant evening around a roaring camp fire. Stuart decided to let his hair (singular) down and have a late night, making it to 8:30pm.

Saturday 26th Next morning saw the sun rising over a frosty and beautiful landscape. We got a fire started and left about 9:30am.

We drove back along Long Plain Rd and had a look at Coolamine Hut, a set of old buildings, including some very interesting old newspapers on the wall. One article for the gentlemen gave instructions on how to ―make good wives better‖. We then drove onto Long Plain Hut where we had morning tea.

After tea we headed along Port Phillip Fire Trail to Old Currango Homestead. Along the way we saw a horseman mustering brumbies and an old traction engine.

We then proceeded along Pockets Saddle Rd and Tantangarra Rd to a pleasant lunch spot.

The scenery was magnificent.

After lunch we proceeded to the Snowy Mountains Hwy and Adaminaby where we stopped for a quick look.

Trip - Easter Huts (Cont’d) Eucumbene Rd and Nimmo Road where we met Stuart‘s friends from Canberra Tim, Sharon and son Wade in a 200 series.

We then headed along a private road and the Snowy Plains Fire Trail to arrive at the brilliant camp spot on top of a hill that would be home for the next 2 nights. Stuart rocked on to 8.35pm.

Trip - Easter Huts (Cont’d) Easter Sunday 27th Kim kept all the kids occupied for hours by hiding little easter eggs all over the place.

About 10am we headed off to visit Cesjack‘s Hut in the Jagungai Wilderness Area. We drove some of the way then walked to the hut across alpine fields.

We talked to the bushwalkers camped around the hut. When we returned to the vehicles we had a leisurely lunch and then drove back to camp.

After collecting firewood we headed off to visit Flannigans Hut, perhaps the most inaccessible of the huts we saw. Stuart managed to drive into a mud hole and had to be winched out backwards by the mighty Pajero.

That evening Stuart had burned all the firewood in one almighty blaze by 8pm, and so went to bed.

Monday 28th Next morning we left in the mist at 9am and headed back to Adaminaby. Along the way we saw wild dogs hanging from the trees. In Adaminaby we had a leisurely morning tea.

From Adaminaby we visited one of Gary‘s favourite fishing spots on the Eucumbene River.

From Adaminaby we visited one of Gary‘s favourite fishing spots on the Eucumbene River .

We then headed to Three Mile Dam for lunch.

Along the way we stopped at a hut called the Rest House. At the dam Stuart and Penny took a quick dip in the icy waters. We then went via Kings Cross Rd to Cabramurra, the highest permanently occupied village in Australia at 1488m.

Trip - Easter Huts (Cont’d)

From Cabramurra we headed down the Lobbs Hole Ravine Rd to Ravine, following power lines again.

This was a lovely drive dropping right down into a historic valley where we saw what is left of the Washington Hotel.

Ravine was a busy town at the turn of last century.

We found a fabulous camp site right next to a major river. Gary went fly fishing and had the luck of all fishermen I have ever known catching nothing.

A raging fire was set ablaze. Stuart nodded off at about 7:30pm, having thrown all the wood onto the fire.

Trip - Easter Huts (Cont’d) Tuesday 29th Next morning saw glorious weather again and the sun rising through the mist over the river was magical. We headed off along the Lobbs Hole Powerline Rd and after a long and lovely drive including a little 4x4 diversion we ended up on the Snowy Mountain Hwy again.

There we aired up and drove down to Tumut (pronounced Chewmitt according to Stuart) and had coffee, before heading off back to Seedenee. Like all of Stuart‘s trips, this was just great and will be fondly remembered by everyone who was there.

Write your report as you travel on one of the AWDC Club trips

Snap photos along the way… make sure you capture all the good bits!

3)

When you get home, submit your report in two parts via email a) Part 1 - a word document or any form that can be easily copied and pasted. b) Part 2 - a folder of high res images c) Let the editor know which photo goes with which part of the report, by labelling the photos with names that match the report. Ie “Photo A to go here” with “Photo A.jpg”
