“Light facilitates illumination and plays the role of an intermediary in making the world around us visible. Light is a form of electromagnetic energy to which the organs of sight react, and which aids in seeing and recognition of people and places.

Light is the medium, while lighting is a concept and a point of view. Light is the means to an end; lighting is the vehicle for these means, and the truthfulness of creation and a sincerity to the space lit is the final goal.

I perceive light as a diaphanous unifying medium, a medium with a certain volume, a medium with a certain porosity which fills the space some of it you can walk through and we call that ambient light, while the other type creates boundaries and edges and defines space. It is like luminous clay, to be sculpted and colored for art, and then diagnosed and modified for function.

Light and space are mutually dependentone cannot exist without another. Light in a space is easily understood when seen as the colloquial paint brush, revealing and hiding elements in a space for comfort, productivity, safety, and an appropriate ambiance. In that way, lighting can be appropriately referred to as the art of revealment and concealment.”

Somewhere along the line, in our culture, darkness became a bad thing, because darkness was seen as ignorance or lack of awareness, and light was seen as knowledge.

Then, in the Jungian philosophy, it says the shadow is the reservoir for human darkness, as well as the seed of creativity. All of us creative people are really, according to Carl Jung, relying on the shadow in some ways.

And then Sufism on the other side says, “Nothingness, which is darkness, is essential to attaining enlightenment”.

What are the philosophical connections of lighting to culture? Feng Shui says soft light creates a positive energy and the right conjunction of light, which is color and direction promotes harmony and prosperity, relating it to the yin and yang symbol of harmony, where you need both.

In Vastu Shastra, color, light and smell are often used to remediate inauspicious conditions in existing structures. It’s a fact that is probably known to all of us, and, it is encouraged to turn on all the lights in house at night, even briefly to expel all negative

energy, I know lot of us are made to do that at Diwali so that Lakshmi comes and everyone’s got money, but I’ve had several friends who’ve come and said, “Yeah, my mother used to make me do that”. And, then there is of course the famous shloka from Rig Veda which is, “Asato ma sadgamaya”, and then, “tamaso ma jyotirgamaya.”

What are the physiological differences of lighting to culture One example is how an individual responds to glare is varied between people with different eye color. One person’s glare can be another person’s sparkle.

So keeping that in mind, it helps us to define, and compose, and respond to local cultures.

For example Diwali or any other festival with festive lighting, in my opinion is beautiful, it’s sparkly, it’s nice, but technically it qualifies as glare outright. This is because of the standards that have been developed in a different context.

work II COMMERCIAL Commercial & Corporate Environments Corporations have begun to consider branding a more significant element of their business practice. In an effort to help shape their image to their community of consumers and clients many businesses have asked architects to create buildings that can be identified as corporate "icons". Traditional approaches to architecture have employed a methodology that looks at a structure as the sum of its parts: the interior, exterior and landscape. These elements serve as the basis for programmatic organization and are used as the means for creating functional and appropriate spaces.

However, as the corporate desire for architecturally iconic forms has developed, architects have had to adapt to new methods of designing and lighting designers have become a part of this endeavor to shape the spaces holistically.

Lighting design should highlight the intricate elements that form a structure’s architecture. A successful design solution encompasses a dramatic but respectful scheme for the landscape by providing targeted lighting on the circulation areas for an appropriate sense of safety and security. If all parts of the pedestrian's surrounding areas are seen clearly, and the visual landscape does not look threatening, then the people will not only perceive the environment to be safer, but will also consider it to be comfortable.

One of the critical factors for developing a successful design is considering the angles from which the structures will be observed. Since lighting the structure requires an expansive distribution and spread of

light, the design must accommodate multiple viewing angles. These factors change with different distances and speeds, varying when the viewer is walking, driving, or gazing.

Lighting designers must take all of these factors into consideration in order to create a pleasing vision from multiple distances and angles.

The interior of a building can be rendered in a variety of ways depending on the spectral reflectance of the materials and finishes inside of the structure, and the location of the sources of the light. Given the delicate aspects of an interior project, energy conservation and efficiency is of essence and therefore one of the primary motives behind the choice of hardware and quality of light. We work closely with architects and engineers to achieve the most inconspicuous methods for wiring and mounting interior fixtures throughout a site. These efforts allow the architects and engineers to concentrate on the design content of the building itself instead of compensating for the lighting fixtures.

In examining the forms of corporate spaces through the design of interiors, exteriors and landscapes one thing has become very clear, that a new type of architecture has emerged in the last few decades: the iconic landmark building. Driven by social and economic forces, as well as the demand for the kind of instant fame and recognition, iconic architecture was formed by the intent to create a structure that is both an amazing piece of surreal sculpture as well as an ‘understated’ insertion into the urban fabric. u bora tower | AWA | 2006

For the exterior lighting of the Singapore Chancery in New York City, we wanted a design that provided a layered lighting response to create a versatile faรงade so the client can adjust the visual appearance of the building at night. We designed the lighting of the faรงade to create a visual identification from in front of the building, across the street and blocks away.

The exterior faรงade lighting was integrated into the interior faรงade panels along with the MEP systems to create one system along the faรงade.

Backlit, translucent white channel glass creates the body of the flanking lanterns. The corrugated effect provides a textured pattern which carries the eye around the corner and to the entrance of the building. The consistent lighting allow the material to express itself.

Indirect lighting fixtures are suspended in ceilingslots over the exterior and interior sides of the glass walled entrance, insuring very little glare and maximum transparency from exterior to interior. This effect allows for the contrast of silver and gold, or coolness and warmth, to be the focal effect in the lighting scheme.

Light fixtures are nested into a niche at the base of the resin-textured wall, to avoid any direct glimpse of the fixtures and consistently illuminate the wall.

The result is a seamless gradient, hidden from view.

D General interior illumination was important in order to create enough light inside to be visible from the outside. Downlights were installed at regular intervals to foster navigation and fulfill general illumination requirements.

The warmth of the lobby transitions into a cool and sleek transitory space. Its effect is enhanced by custom indicator lights. The red light of the cue worked well against the cool steel cladding.

Illuminated sections and plans provide excellent visualizations of what the space will look and feel like. In addition to these renderings, details are always key in fulfilling the expectations of the vision at hand. AWA always carefully considers the nuances of architectural detailing, lamp positioning and selection in each project, and spends time drafting with precision the details that make these effects possible.

The U-Bora tower rises 67 stories from the ground in a grand gesture towards the sky. Its level-by-level lighting rises in tandem with each floor’s progress, from lobby to sky. Its most fascinating lighting element is a strong vertical illuminated accent, drawing the gesture full-circle by ascending from the ground-up on one façade, and from the sky-down on the opposite façade.

The 250 meter high U Bora Office tower is located in the middle of Business Bay, Dubai UAE. The tower is meant to provide maximum prime viewing angles.

Oriented orthogonally to the street on the ground floor, the four faces of the tower begin to twist as they increase in height. The façade's vertical thermometer further accents this unique curvature of the building.

The main circulation is located in a centralized core, maximizing usable areas and window space. The square footage of the floors increases toward the top of the 58 story tower. The bottom floors start at 1,100m² while the top floors are 2,000m², making

the tower's total square footage 80,000m².

The complex in which the tower is located contains 7,000m² of retail space, a 10,000m² public outdoor deck and a large 30,000m² residential block. The juxtaposition of this shorter 16 story residential tower does not compete with the height of its neighboring tower, and instead horizontally stretches along the lake, providing maximum views of the water.

The World Trade Center Bangalore is situated within the Brigade Gateway complex. The master-plan for this 40 acre complex designed by HOK, New York, as well as the design for the building, located at Rajajinagar-Malleshwaram Junction in North Bangalore, India. The WTC at Brigade Gateway is the tallest commercial building in Bangalore, and is the first fully privately owned installation of a WTC in India. Bangalore is responsible for a large portion of India's software exports and other public sector heavy industries and is proud to see its growth manifest in this new building.

To create a visual hierarchy we used a layered approach. The World Trade Center building is the fulcrum of the site, where the light concentrates and shimmers. The light skips over roof tops and public pools as it emanates from the WTC. The lighting scheme is crucial in establishing a sense of place, and enabling intuitive navigation throughout the expansive forty-acre site. The building's dramatic forms and the public spaces surrounding it are given special emphasis.

The lighting design for this corporate headquarter augmented the architectural concept of clean simple forms and strong accent lines. We culled simple gestures and key moments from the composition of the designed architectural elements to create a lighting design solution bespoken to the personality of the client. The main lobby has a minimalist approach to its lighting design where no direct downlights have been used to light the space.

The corduroy white stone wall is being grazed by continuous linear LED uplighting that is recessed flush within the floor.

AWA sketch for section of lighting of atrium skylights The heart of the building is the 10-story atrium that we have accented so that it radiates light from within and is the focus of the building at night.

To light this space to meet the design objectives, we needed to address the complex issues of maintenance and glare. We developed a lighting design solution that addressed these issues by locating all the lighting at the top of the atrium.

At this location we are able to mount the general lighting to the roof catwalk, and hide the fixture from direct view. To highlight the atrium skylights, we integrated linear LED lighting at the edges that is accessible from the exterior of the roof.

Our approach to lighting the First International Financial Center focuses on meeting all standards for a LEED Gold building rating while enhancing the salient design features of a newly constructed office facility. The new office also serves as an urban landmark. The lighting design for the building exterior will highlight its textured mesh curtain wall, the “floating tube” corridor that projects from the building’s West façade, the “bookend fins” projecting past the building fenestration at the North and South facades, and the entry canopy at street level. The lobby space is penetrated by three large

work elevator columns. They appear to be continuous vertical cores puncturing the ceiling and floor, achieved with cove lighting at each intersection.

The illuminated vertical panels line the pedestrian bridge at the mezzanine level creating a sense of weightlessness. The traditional layering of the Jali screen (constructed by local crafts people) placed in front of a solid wall is lit behind for a silhouette effect.

One Indiabulls Centre is a dramatic complex currently comprising of two towers, located strategically in Mumbai’s emerging Central Business District of Lower Parcel. The two towers, while complementing each other, are a stark contrast in form and spatial planning. The first tower has a floor plate of 2500 sq m and a distinct 11 degree tilt. The second tower consists of two wings of approximately 1800 sq m each merging on the top three floors (17-20) with a span of 35 m. While one tower is embellished with glazing and aluminum cladding, the other is embellished with glazing and limestone cladding.

The project has turned the erstwhile textile mill area of Mumbai into the new business district of the city. The towers house offices of Morgan Stanley, Bloomberg, British Council, Tata Motors and a host of other multinational and Indian corporate/ financial firms. AWA Lighting Designers were retained by the architects, AHC and the client to aspires a distinct and elegant visual experience with the lighting solution for the two towers. Working in close harmony with AHC AWA was able to realize true project collaboration that is deeply rooted in the local ecosphere. The two firm’s insights into local needs moved beyond what is typical and resulted in fully modern and sustainable project.

The lighting solution was intended to create a well designed and clean looking space that

augmentesthe architectural expression of AHC, and the requirements of the client. The lighting design solution aspires to highlight the materiality in the space chosen carefully by AHC - while providing visual clarity for the building at large and the spaces created within. Since this project included two towers, it was important for the lighting to provide visual continuity, while also providing way-finding through the site, highlighting paths of circulation and clear visual cues through the public lobbies.

AWA provided interior lighting solutions for entrance lobbies, lift lobbies, all circulation areas and all landscape on the 10-acre site. Exterior lighting accentuates the two 100-meter towers, encompassing nearly 2 million square feet of office space. AWA was also able to utilize the architectural glass volumes and refuge terraces to create lit volumes that provide a graceful lighting personality for the building at night.

A custom and bespoken lighting system was developed for Indiabulls, such that a unified solution

could be developed for both towers. It was also important to develop the lighting solutions. such that parts of the lighting “kit of parts� could be repeated over the other India Bulls projects. This office building complex is composed of three towers with set-back landscaped terraces. A builtin faรงade lighting solution unifies the separate buildings, while the terraces become pockets of uplit spaces at night. The three buildings are also connected at the ground floor level by an 11 meter tall lobby space that greets the city with a bright and vibrant presence.

This office building is located in the BKC area of Mumbai. The lighting for this corporate building was inspired directly by the architectural intent- spatial clarity and clean minimal visuals.

Parcel 5.05 is situated at the center of district 5 of the King Abdulah Financial District. It is zoned to be the culminating high point within its urban district.

The plot is organized with the residential tower at the south edge and the office tower at the north edge.

As the central parcel in the district, the building is linked by 5 bridges to the surrounding parcels. This important position within the district will allow the parcel to be a crossroad for pedestrians at the +1 level and generate considerable retail traffic.

Our Civic Intent Beyond the personal and private domains in our lives, there are spaces that we all share – spaces where we come together as a collective whole to work, worship, play, think, and live. These spaces, referred to here as civic infrastructure, form the fabric of our cities and communities. When AWA is given the opportunity to light buildings and spaces within the civic sphere we focus on heightening the experience of the collective whole. Lighting in the civic sphere is not without its challenges; every project requires us to conside diverse viewpoints, as the space is utilized by a broad cross section of people.

When it comes to infrastructure, most people think of public works such as bridges, tunnels, dams and so on. But public infrastructure can more accurately be recognized as any construct that is used by the general population. Civil infrastructure projects have been a part of AWA’s design portfolio since the firm’s inception, and designing projects and spaces for public use is an important capacity for the lighting design profession.

AWA was commissioned by the United Nations Foundation to generate a lighting project that would help raise awareness of the malaria problem in Africa. The design content and form of the installation was inspired by the African “village”. It positioned participants within a “Night in Africa” where a small village united to engage in its rich local community. For this evening event, light was used to visualize a series of mosquito nets, drawing the observer’s attention immediately to the central cause. The illuminated African “village” allusion drew parallels to their end use for observers.

Another one of our projects took on another flavor altogether, as it is experienced from both a distant and immediate perspective. The Golden Temple, located in Amritsar (India), is the most important religious place to the Sikhs. Our intention was to create a lighting scheme that alluded to the architecture of the complex, while allowing for near and far experiences. It was important to highlight the natural beauty of architecture without encumbering it with conflicting shadows and color distortion. By lighting the Golden Temple exterior with this sensitive strategy, it emanated with the sanctity of the events taking place within. From across the lake and within the community, the successful lighting emphasizes its presence and significance. These particular projects are illustrative of the type of work we can do in the civic sphere. They are highly democratic, designed specifically for the user experience and reflective of the communities in which they operate. We relish the opportunity to continue working in the civic sphere for communities and cultures around the globe.

grow Given the urban nature of this project, it was critical to understand its context and assimilate the local dynamics of usage patterns, circulation, and nighttime activities. While working with the architects, we decided to pursue an unconventional approach to this project. The genre of such projects is usually driven by light levels first and then everything else.

But we decided to make light levels our last check, and work on composing the elements of this project into a wholesome, evocative, and exciting night-time space enables the community to come together. The results have been gratifying. The lighting solution to

this environment combined wayfinding, patterns and rhythms of lights, and highlighted the architectural massing with strong geometric lighting moves, elicited a very positive response from the community.

The World Trade Center is the first fully privately owned installation of a WTC in India and is the tallest commercial building in the city of Bangalore.

Bangalore produces a large percentage of the software exports from India as well as other heavy public sector industries and is proud to see its growth manifested in this new building and complex.

AWA approached the Brigade Gateway project in a manner that sought to create a paradigm shift in the lit environment. The lighting design used architectural focal points and a consistent visual fabric at night to create a distinct visual hierarchy.

We aspired to create compositions that would guide the design process, from conception to completion of the project, rather than using foot candles or lux levels to dictate the design. The landscape lighting was designed to create a warm and open environment as a direct counterpoint to the perceptions that might be engendered from the programmatic requirements of the site.

AWA designed sustainable fixtures that exist harmoniously with their surroundings, including the streetlight design which drew influence from the architecture, and a locally manufactured custom bollard which was created using local materials (granite). Bollards illuminate the walkway without any overhead lighting. The combination of the bollards and the tree uplighting creates an evocative visual experience. *Sheraton Hotel: AWA scope was landscape lighting only

AWA designed fixtures that would exist harmoniously with their surroundings, influenced by the architecture designed for the site. The streetlight design drew influence from structural elements that support the exterior canopies. The lighting for the complex creates a layered hierarchy to the site, establishing a sense of place and enabling intuitive navigation for pedestrians moving through. The dramatic water feature serves as the central anchor to the site. The creative lighting solutions developed

by AWA keep each space fresh and unique, and enliven the public spaces in the evening.

The Rapid MetroRail Gurgaon is a transit system constructed for the city of Gurgaon which links together with the New Delhi Metro system. Phase 1 of the project will consist of a network of 5.1 km that connects Cyber City, NH-8, and Sikanderpur station. Phase 2 will consist of a network of 7 km that will connect Sector 55-56 to the Delhi Metro at Sikanderpur. The Metro will be India’s first privately owned and financed metro, and AWA is designing the lighting for 5 stations: Sikanderpur, DLF Phase II, Vodafone at Belvedere Towers, Gateway Towers, and DLF Phase III.

Medicity is a holistic health center/hospital in Gurgaon that opened in 2010. Medicity is a 1600bed hospital, the largest in all of Asia. This is a project that is very close to our heart. The Trehan family, who formulated the vision and encouraged a detailoriented execution of the project were wonderful people to work with. We wanted to create an uplifting and happy space far removed from how we generally see hospitals. It was a tremendous opportunity to create a difference, especially amongst people who were unwell and recovering.

Light and lighting can be very powerful healers and seeing the result was gratifying. The entrance lobby ceiling features recess-lit reveals cut in the shapes of the DNA helix structure. The masterplan for the domestic (1A, 1B) & international (2C) terminals required a unified and visually clear response that reiterated easy wayfinding, visitor comfort and engendered a sense of safety and security. The lighting concept allowed the community the ability to participate and learn about the importance of environmental quality and human impact. We know that badly designed lighting can lead to glare and dark shadows that might promote rather than hinder criminal activity, and so we carefully fabricated our design for glare-free and subtle lighting. Transition places were well lit to increase a sense of safety and security in the community.

Lighting for the Bayonne Bridge NY-NJ was divided into two separate but complimentary schemes: a “necklace” lighting effect dotting the arch and roadway and a system for lighting the structural members of the bridge. The necklace pattern consists of a series of sparkling points or “gems” which can be programmed to emit color-changing light for holidays and special events. Structural lighting focuses on illuminating the interior of the bridge structure, using, an inside-out strategy which plays up the bridge’s dimensionality, sculpting the structural members with light.

This was a competition commissioned by the Rulers of Qatar. This project entry was shortlisted as one of two finalists. The project was subsequently awarded to Santiago Calatrava. There are three interconnected bridges, spanning almost ten kilometres in the Doha Bay. The bridge will connect the city’s cultural district in the north to Hamad International Airport and the central business district in West Bay. The bridges, which are designed to accommodate as many as 2,000 vehicles an hour per lane, are also flanked by a series of subsea tunnels to manage and direct the flow of traffic across the bay.

This bridge connects Bur Dubai to Deira. At 201 meters high, it is the largest single arch span bridge in the world. This bridge is being built at the cost of 4 billion dirhams and will be a significant feat for engineering internationally. The sight of the crescent moon is significant in Islam. It’s the foundation of the Lunar Cycle and measuring time. We used this as our conceptual influence while designing the light of the Dubai Sixth Crossing Bridge. The waning of the intensity of light reflected from the bridge arch surface is synchronized with the levels of light reflected by the moon at each phase.So the intensity

grow of light on the bridge arch serves as the measurement of the portion of the moon that is reflecting light at any given phase of the lunar cycle. Reflections of the illuminated arch in the water beneath the bridge “complete the circle” of the full moon’s profile.

The bridge is 200m tall, 1.235km long and 86m wide. It has 6 lanes of traffic in each direction and 2 track lines. The design goal is to create the biggest “MOON-DIAL” in the world. Our challenge was to establish a system for controlling the change of light levels throughout the 29.5-day lunar cycle.

Gradations of light would have to be achieved by way of a complex switching system with multiple layers of light. We developed a separate lighting scene for each phase of the moon’s illumination, including the full, gibbous, half, crescent, and new moons. In our scheme, the new phase is not represented by complete darkness, but instead emits a subtle glow like the dim light reflected by the moon during a total lunar eclipse. For two days observers will see this glow, which results from the gentle reflection of light used to illuminate the bridge cables. The lighting of the bridge arch returns with the appearance of the

crescent moon, significant to the identification of the waxing crescent, which is the most significant phase of the moon for Islam. After this point, the arch light alternately accumulates and dissipates in sync with the rest of the moon’s phases.

Our concept for this Dubai Bridge Fifth Crossing competition is drawn from the symbol of the falcon and its significance as the national symbol of the U.A.E. The bridge was divided into distinct elements that are individually highlighted (akin to creating chords or notes in a symphony), and then combined to form a composition or symphony. The various lighting elements that we have determined, and their relationship to the physical body and movements of the falcon, are as follows: wings (“sails” of the falcon), ribcage, eye, spine, wingspan, roadway, underbelly (“panel” of the falcon), and the diving

The stable elements, such as the ribcage and spine, are brightly and continuously lit to suggest their strength and constancy. In contrast, the mutable elements, including the feathered “wing” cables and soft “panel” underbelly of the bridge are illuminated with less intensity, and more of a fading or gradient effect.

To highlight the falcon’s sails, we have illuminated the inner cables of the bridge from their bases halfway up each cable, so that there is a “feathering” effect of the wings’ upper ends.

G9 Precinct is a 215 acre site located at the juncture between the CBD to the west - a large scale extreme grid and tower environment - Phase 3 to the East - an informal, small scale residential environment. and the canal which permeates these places with water from the Gulf. Formed by the orthogonal grid of the streets, the massing of the west side of the G9 Precinct is formal in style and character. The east side of the precinct is informal and creates irregular open spaces that expand and contract as they move through the massing of buildings.

grow Situated in the formal urban park, an informal fresh water source runs down the streets and the university quad to return to nature and the sea. This literal interaction of the informal and formal creates special amphitheater coves within the university block and the lovely landscapes of the moat streets.

The urban masterplan for Dubai Waterfront Precinct 2 was developed around the interaction between water and land and traditional Islamic architecture.

Our main points of focus for the lighting design were divided into three categories: open spaces (including the Oasis and Greenway), street-scapes (automotive and pedestrian path lighting), and iconic and infrastructural buildings. The mosque was our central focal point for the entire area. Islamic design motifs and nautical themed fixtures were used where appropriate.

The lighting design, besides responding to functional and maintenance requirements, augments the three visual personalities of the station – the passenger experience, the far view of the station, and the visual experience for the drivers on the adjoining highways.

AWA developed a dramatic yet respectful lighting scheme for the Green Line Station that would attract both travelers and visitors. A monochromatic wash of light sweeps though the terminal as a train arrives and departs. When a train is not in the station, the exterior shell emits a white glow; a gradation of colored light pushes through the station as the

grow train arrives and trails out as the train departs. The concept for the lighting scheme comes from the pumping motion of a piston in the steam engines.

Apart from working and spending times with our families at home, we also enjoy spending time exploring the sights and sounds of our cities. Restaurants, bars, and hotels all cater to this desire, and provide us with entertainment, comfort, and excitement. The hospitality industry requires design to form these environments, to create spaces that are unique and pleasurable to occupy. We have worked on several hospitality projects that have been located in the Middle-East, Africa and Asia, and have worked with hotel chains such as Hilton, Starwood Group, Hyatt, Radisson, Fairmont, and Alila. We believe that every practitioner in the built environment can benefit from better understanding the implications of culture in hospitality. Every culture has had a distinct relationship with light. As it is manifests in the present day, light defines broader tastes and styles within a culture and has deeper implications than mere fashion or vogue. As the hospitality industry begins to operate across geographic boundaries, designers need to have a greater understanding of cultural drivers in order to meet the needs of their clientele.

We don’t think of lighting as a main event, but rather as a distinct architectural element or construction material which can be incorporated into architectural details. Rather than focus on the fantastical aspects of lighting design, our idea of a well-lit space is one where we augment the architect’s vision. In order to do so we have to work closely with architects to ensure that our lighting designs don’t in any way impair the original façade. On one of our recent Hotel projects, we faced a situation where the original fixture specification was substituted with another fixture. The substituted fixture was not available with a housing that could take extra wire for fixture maintenance. We were able to recognize this and suggest using a waterproof junction box with tap-ins for through wiring. Innovative solutions like this one are part of the reason AWA is successful at completing projects in multiple geographical locations. We are able to combine our technical expertise with a little bit of creativity and solve problems that arise during the design and construction of a project. There is a dichotomy of light that exists within the environment of a bar or restaurant - the bar itself and the seating within the establishment. The light within the seating area is significantly more subdued than in comparison to that of the bar. The bar itself is not highlighted as much as it’s contents. Backlighting is commonly used in bars to provide a high level of contrast that captures the form of the bottles. In the seating area, diffused lighting can create a level of comforting ambience and color. This dichotomy can be measured using a ratio.

The scheme for South City Prime Restaurant required designing an intimate and luxurious atmosphere appropriate for fine dining. Color was used strategically to frame the entry to the bar from the main dining room, to heighten drama in the private dining room with bold, oversized red pendant lamp shades, and to add a spike of orange vibrancy to the bar area. Warm but neutral-colored light in the main dining room plays up the appearance of the food, in contrast with the more lively colors of the bar and lounge. Grazing light plays up the texture of the white leather quilted walls and the sparkle of the

Located in a tenement building in the East Village of New York City, Ludo (Latin for “to play”), has two levels and two bar areas with an enticing multi-ethnic menu served in a laid-back environment. In response to the architect’s vision of evoking a Mediterranean Tavern, the lighting design was simple, airy, organic, and tactile. The lounge at street level portrays a calm elegance with an alluring pool of blue light beckoning from below. Visitors are drawn to the rippling blue waves that appear to be reflected off a lagoon in a secluded grotto cave. This dive into the restaurant’s basement bar and adjacent dining

The luxury hotel and resort operating company has created magnificent hotels all around the world and the Jaipur is no exception. Exquisitely designed

by Randolph Gray, it reflects and complements the uniqueness of it’s community by following the spectacular architectural style that is seen in the surrounding palaces. In addition to the 248 rooms, guests are offered a variety of restaurants and bars, including a poolside bar, a 10,000 square foot Willow Stream spa, and a 5,000 square foot health club. The hotel’s magnificent 48,500 square foot

Convention Center and gardens can host over 1000 guests within their richly adorned spaces.

Our lighting concept for the Fairmont Jaipur creates dramatically illuminated spaces, fully capitalizing on the romance inherent in the architectural unexpected moments of delight are created by special accents, such as candlelight effects on entry stairs, pool-side torches, and lighting effects that erupt into richly textured patterns of shadows on plain walls. The guest’s gait is the primary focus of the landscape lighting, which draws visitors along and piques their

curiosity by pacing illumination low along paths.

Visitors’ attention is drawn towards dining areas and other outdoor focal points through the use of delicately illuminated trees with hanging fixtures.

Large spaces with high ceilings are filled with the warm glow of low-hanging chandeliers, creating an intimate place from a very open space.

At Blue Frog, when the architect showed us the initial elevation, we saw the whole nodal structure of the seating as one big light fixture tying the space together.

The Blue Frog Lounge combines a performance space, dining space, dance floor, and recording studios within a renovated factory space in the heart of Mumbai. Cylindrical dining booths in the main performance area are carved from an undulating expanse of stepped wood frame, the surface of which is topped with translucent plexiglass and illuminated

“Biophilic Design” can refer to several trends in modern “green” design, but in most uses it indicates a design principle that goes beyond merely minimizing the impact of the built environment to create actual close contact between users and the “natural” world. By inviting nature into the design, whether through biomimicry, green curtain walls, extensive natural lighting(or simulations thereof), multi-species accessiblity, or the like, a design reengages occupants with the environmental elements that, according to Wilson, are inherently intertwined with our genetic predispositions.

rela x While looking for an inspirational benchmark, we found an image of daylight filtering through dense foliage. Once the vision was clear, we had the creative courage to carry it through the entire process, refining and tweaking as we developed the design.

Tote is one of Mumbai’s hottest restaurant, bar, and banquet hall destinations. In the banqueting and indoor restaurant areas, white metal tree-mimicking pillars branch to the ceiling. The lighting strategy in this space is to use the architectural pockets of light to mimic lighting piercing through the foliage of the “trees� into the space.

Alila is a 200-room resort with four bar/restaurants, a conference facility, a health spa, and three swimming pools. The entire resort was built in accordance with “Green Globe” environmental guidelines focused on reducing light pollution and respecting the natural habitats of the local flora and fauna. Several choices of lighting treatments, materials and fixtures were informed by local crafts. Light levels were kept at a minimum, thereby sculpting a romantic and exclusive feeling.

The main lobby acts as a central focus for the resort. It needed to feel inviting, beckoning visitors to come inside and relax while also exhibiting the resort’s uniqueness of place and the complexity of its features.

As seasons change, the natural lighting changes too. Foliage thickens and thins, rains drenches then dissipates. The warm, gnarly density of an old banyan tree speaks of the natural history preserved in the architectural intent. By strategically placing an uplight on the tree, it’s focus is brought to the unique aging.

A frangipani tree stands in the centre of the entrance courtyard, its graceful form emphasized by cool LED lights placed around its base. These uplights are submerged in the pool that surrounds the tree. As a result, the water becomes the source of light while at the same time reflecting back the illuminated forms around it.

The entrance to the resort is made warm and inviting by keeping the interior illumination inside, and opting for lighting that is lower and warmer in temperature.

Up-lighting on the arches with custom sconce fixtures not only accent the architectural detail and pattern, but help to draw visitors towards the entrance.

Lights along the exterior of the structure capture the patterns on the faรงade and create a welcoming visibility. The warmly lit verticals of the archways and illuminated openings carry the eye deeper into the resort.

Layers of illumination filter from glowing warm vertical elements to horizontal stretches, then dissolve into the outer bounds and the night sky.

By keeping overall light levels low, the stars can contribute to the effect, and an intimate feel is achieved. Horizontally illuminated ground-level and below-ground-level surfaces emphasize the pools’ effect on light, the landscape’s lush green foliage, and draw the eye inwards to the sparking activity within the open structure.

In the initial analysis of the site, AWA identified the focal points of the Alila Diwa resort experience.

Using the diagram above, a guide was created for developing a lighting design that would feel structured while also capturing the detail and nuance in the architecture and landscape.

Next all perspectives has to be considered. This step requires careful consideration and thoughtful visualization. This process enables AWA to deliver designs based on the experience of the people that work, play, and relax in these spaces. Alila Diwa’s

focal points were decided to be the resort’s key restaurants, building facades, the covered path leading from one building to the next, the spa area, and the main entrance.

The lighting layout, complete with technical considerations, is an interpretation of the guidelines set forth early. Fixture spacing, quantity, placement, type, and architectural detailing are just a few of the elements that are carefully considered and researched before appearing on AWA lighting layouts.

Central to the photonic composition present in the lighting scheme of Alila Diwa, this corridor brings various themes together. Here, the vertical columns that echo throughout the resort’s architecture are presented front and center. Grazing up lights not only capture the rich surface texture of the stone columns, but also warmly illuminate the passage. Its rhythmic punctuation yields to the landscape as one looks outwards. Several up lights discretely placed above eye-level on the columns serve to illuminate the peaked roof as one looks upwards.

AWA’s renderings are the ideal tool to portray a lighting concept to client and architects alike. Often working over the architect’s initial renderings of a project, AWA uses a tried and tested rendering process to accurately capture the feel of the space once it has been illuminated. During this process, the AWA team is able to also further refine and craft the nuance of the vision at hand.

rela x The central lobby’s warmth emanates through arched openings, mingling with the calm surfaces of surrounding pools, engaging in a cyclical exchange.

The cooling effect receives emphasis from recessed, underwater lighting. Central columns in the space are highlighted by down lights, creating a rhythm that carries attention to the central chandelier: perforated copper cylinders hung from various lengths. This custom fixture was designed by AWA, and presented a challenge during its local fabrication. Despite the tight budget, its simple and elegant design was executed beautifully. Fixtures were positioned to brighten the

wood plank ceiling, instead of allowing such detail, indicative of Goan architecture, to disappear into shadow.

The kitchen area maintains elegance with a variety of soft metallic washes. Candle light allusions, which guide much of the lighting scheme throughout the resort, are created here by nestling the light source low into these custom perforated copper cylinders. A backdrop of variegated luminance sets the stage for culinary performance. It is achieved along the back wall by grazing gold tile with recessed linear light from above. A third metallic quality a distressed gray metal face on the bar is illuminated from a recessed fixture under the bar top.

From design to installation, AWA makes a strong effort to maintain a steady hand on the design intent of the lighting scheme. During installation, subtle differences in aiming and installation of a fixture is what makes the effect we had planned all along. For this reason, AWA always recommends visiting the construction sites often during a new project’s build-out. Here, we are able to provide the extra attention to make a project its best.

The spice studio restaurant had several incarnations before taking shape in its final form. The constant throughout its development was the importance of low levels of lighting and crafting an intimate feel, while highlighting Goan architectural features and natural elements.

In keeping with the vernacular architectural style, the all day dining area features custom decorative fixtures which were locally made. The production of these fixtures began with a sketched concept, and evolved into a test model. This prototype allowed AWA the opportunity to refine the effect of the shadow that the fixture would emanate once installed.

With the careful consideration of the lamp placement and materials, this final effect was a success and occupied the space naturally.

As with many aspects of the resort, the Edge Bar implemented a low level of lighting to create a romantic and exclusive feeling. Recessed linear light applied behind the banquette created a strong accent on the sculptural wall installation, and helped to emphasize the level of conversation, brightening each expression.

Down lights provided general illumination for seating and tabletops. Lighting the face of the bar captured the unique texture of the material on its face and provided general illumination to visitors.

The Furusato Restaurant at the Sands Hotel, Macau, caters to diners visiting the gambling capitol of the East. For this elegant, sophisticated dining space, we aimed to create a scheme that would communicate drama without overwhelming the senses of the dining guest. The interior finishes at Furusato emphasize reflectivity with the use of mirrors, glass, polished floors, and glimmering gold-toned wall art.

Our challenge was to minimize glare while playing up the warm, luxurious tones of dark marble, both polished and carved, deep cherry wood, gold leaf wall treatments, and rich red accent pieces. Sculptural

pieces and also a large saltwater fish tank at the sushi bar are illuminated so as to highlight form and create depth. Indirect lighting and recessed linear slots bring a warm, vibrant glow to the entry, bar, and dining areas, and direct the guests’ attention to select pieces of artwork on display throughout the space.

The Mayar Wellness Resort has been envisaged to redefine luxury for wellness resorts worldwide. This project is being developed by the well-known Mayar group (owners of the Ammatra Spas in Singapore and India), and is designed by the Denniston Group out of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. The site is located 60km west of New Delhi in the foothills of the Aravalli mountains. The lighting concept was inspired by and then developed along the lines of the five elements (panch-tatvams), a critical concept in holistic wellness therapy.

immerse I C ULT URA L The Culture of Light Through our work in international markets over the past fifteen years we have collected several observations and strategies for lighting design solutions in a wide variety of global cultural contexts. As this information accumulated over time we began to feel a growing need to initiate a dialog with other designers, architects, landscape architects and educators so that we could articulate and broaden our knowledge by exploring the differences and similarities that exist cross-culturally. Learning about culture informs lighting design, and thus our exploration of light has developed into an investigation of humanity’s relationship to its surroundings.

So to what extent has culture affected lighting sensibilities around the globe? A study of context often reveals the most striking global differences in opinion regarding lighting design. Stylistic differences tend to fluctuate even within a single culture, mimicking the phases of the tides with pendulum swings from conservatism to eclecticism, from austerity to ostentation.

If we define the two spectral poles of lighting design as ‘the functional’ and ‘the aesthetic’, we can locate most cultures at some point between the two. However at the same time lighting is also often an indicator of a region’s technological and economic status. Even from a cursory glance at a distance, a certain amount of information can be gleaned from viewing a city’s skyline at night. The degree to which a city or town has incorporated exterior lighting, to which it is visible from a distance, can be seen as a measure of technological sophistication and economic growth.

AWA Lighting Designers teamed with PHOSPHORUS to create an interactive installation called “Biography Collective” for the Lumen Festival at Staten Island.

The festival was held at Lyons Pool, a NYC Department of Parks and Recreation site on Staten Island, on Saturday, June 15th. The Installation was 30’ x 30’ in size and four overhead projectors were used, through which the visitors became the artist to create a collaborative canvas of light and projection that changed and developed through the night.

The Monsoon bar at the Kennedy Center, Washington D.C. features a large scale undulating, illuminated “carpet” hanging from the ceiling. Its pattern is composed of vertically hung strings, the lengths of which determine the steepness and shape of the undulations. The illumination of this carpet creates fantastic effects when the vertical strings interrupt light beams to cast a flood of variegated shadows on the floor.

This showcase private art gallery is located on the estate of a private residence. In working closely with both the architects and the owner, we were able to create a space which is visually stimulating, highly user friendly, and functional throughout the space’s varying needs. The core concept of the Gallery and landscape is that events or moments occur predictably and unpredictably through changes in the variables of the project. These changes can be contextual changes such as color, texture, and density of the landscape. The building actually changed in form and tectonics in pursuit of specific lighting phenomena.

The lighting system used in D Gallery was an automated system that can be programmed to shift over periods ranging from seconds to 16 days. The system is topology free (not tied to rooms or other spaces), with about 50 control nodes. All of these elements have been provided so that the gallery space can be programmed to respond to natural shifts in the color, texture, and density of the adjoining landscape.

The monolithic concrete element has a longerthan-human life span. This worked conceptually to balance other elements such as the building’s easily changeable skin that reflected a short duration relative to the life of the project. The material and formal solidity of the concrete wall bridged interior and exterior by carrying the interior light outside, utilizing the flat surface to dissolve light into the dark.

A focal point of the building’s interior is the dramatic steel staircase. The original plan called for a more typical stainless steel-and-glass staircase which came in over budget. The final laser-cut metal solution required only subtle illumination, so that its form and the cast shadows worked in unison to create the final effect.

The terne-coated copper roof was a creative solution developed by John Shields, principal at Point B Design. The roof is striking angular and metal seems perfectly suited to the building’s purpose of showcasing the owner’s collection of minimalist paintings. The lighting on the underside of the roof was achieved by placing out-ward facing fixtures just inside of the glass entry. The effect captured the roof’s crescendo near the entrance, and the complexity of its facets in the night, without relying upon harsh exterior lighting that would disrupt the gentle illumination of the night landscape.

The building’s frame is composed of custom-made weathering steel structures. The unique qualities of the weathering effect would result in the frames changing from “blaze orange” to a darker brown depending on the lighting. The architect explained how the steel will oxidize and weather naturally, adding new dimensions of color and reflecting the changing environment just outside the 3,500-squarefoot gallery’s walls. Uplights at the base of the frame illuminate the blaze orange during the night.

An interior mesh was devised by the architects and would be used for hanging and displaying artwork.

The final solution was seamless and highly custom.

The soaring metal mesh net structure offers a flexible yet strong solution for hanging the owner’s largescale paintings, and can adapt to a rotating selection of diverse artwork. A lighting solution that would emphasize the artwork as the primary visual element, but also capture the beauty of the architectural mesh had to be carefully crafted.

The Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex (SQYC) is located in Salalah, the Sultanate of Oman. This complex, to be built on 89,000sqm area, includes an electronic library that is connected to international libraries, different knowledge centres and the websites of the government authorities.

The complex is divided into two - the first for young men and the other for young women. Each division will have a covered swimming pool and a gymnasium.

The first floor of each division will have a gymnasium for young athletes. The complex will have a big hall for indoor sports competitions.

Millions of lives are lost annually in Africa to malaria, a disease easily preventable by nighttime use of a simple mosquito net. This event and installation was intended to be the spark in fueling this push to provide assistance to the United Nations, raise global awareness, and directly save lives with fundraising from a global audience.

The UNF approached AWA Lighting Designers to craft this installation and design the nets to be used and mass produced in Korea in order to make a great push to produce and move the nets to Africa. This

The focal design content and form of the installation is inspired by an African village. It positions participants within “a night in Africa,” where a small village unites to engage in its rich local community.

Attendees wander through a “village” composed of individual homes represented by a net sculpture, and gather around the illuminated central “hearth” of the installation. The nets are partnered with the

medium of light to create an illuminated, sculptural work of art. The nets are translated into a sculptural form and integrated into a simple architectural structure representative of the individual family huts in the African village. Key “personalities,” such as the “cocoon” and the protective “shield,” are represented in lights to communicate the sentiment towards the nets felt by the users. A large-format screen flashes images of the community members benefitting from use of the nets, as well as beautiful scenes from Africa. This visual display not only communicates the large-scale life-saving power of

the nets, but also the individualized and unique feelings towards the nets felt by individuals in the villages using them. The emotional response and experience that this installation offers will drive a deeper motivation to act and donate among this great cause.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Memorial (CSMM) intends to develop a cultural anchor for the great city of Mumbai by honoring the 17th century ruler of Western India, who valiantly fought and defeated foreign invaders. The memorial includes a statue of Shivaji Maharaj in the Arabian Sea, off the coast of Mumbai’s iconic Marine Drive. The proposed statue will have a height of around 192 metres, which on completion would be the tallest statue in the world. To respond to the emotional connect that CSMM provides to many, AWA designed lighting with an evocative and reverential approach.

Perfect Accent Light has a substantial impact on increased sales and brand positioning. Lighting improves the efficacy of the entire retail mechanism – it brings customers in, helps them make a purchase, and transitions them out of the store. Above all it provides the consumer with a positive experience which in turn makes them want to return to the store again later. In order to make the environment comfortable, the lighting must guide the consumer through the store - not every product will interest the buyer, and as such every platform or presentation surface must seem enticing. In order to best illuminate a retail environment we must make sure that we have an understanding of what the brand sells. Do they sell highly reflective products? On what scale are their products? How intricate are they? The answers to all these questions should be evident in the eventual design that is created.

Light has to attract people to that space, but also make that space comfortable once they have entered it.

This is a difficult balance to strike, but it is vital to the design of retail environments. The international marketplace has made this even more challenging as the perspective on what kind of light attracts us changes from culture to culture. As retail brands begin to open up stores in a variety of other countries this has become something we have started to address.

The Peak Tower in Hong Kong stands as a city icon at the top of Victoria Peak, and provides shopping, dining, and views for tourists and local visitors. Its bold, contemporary geometry and unique location called for a dramatic lighting scheme that would attract visitors after its renovation. AWA developed a lighting design that traces the path of the arriving visitor through the expanse of the building. Upon arrival in the main atrium, guests look up to view a massive field of 2’x2’ convex panels, each illuminated by an individual LED lighting strip. Computerized controls are programed to display sweeps of color,

Peak Tower needed a lighting scheme that not only upheld and enhanced its established landmark status, but also create a hierarchy for navigation and comprehension, as the space is quite expansive. Early diagrams were created to understand the most basic order of the space, and to set into effect the guidelines that would contribute to the success of the projects once enacted.

Peak’s renovation was aided by the construction of models and renderings. AWA was inspired by its unique architecture to experiment with some exciting lighting strategies. As the structure had already been built, AWA had the great opportunity to test out some lighting techniques far in advance of their installation.

This provided some great opportunities for exploration in terms of projection, dynamic and changing lighting effects, and overall fineness in execution.

The color-changing grid was composed of custom curved panels, with LED lighting installed along one edge. The source was concealed in the layering of the panels rows. The LED light strips are controlled by a “hypnotizer� function through a processor, and can be manipulated to perform a wide variety of visual tricks. Letters, patterns and smooth washes of colorful gradients adorned the ceiling of the mall much to the delight of shoppers ascending the escalators below.

The Orion Mall is part of the 40-acre mixed-use Brigade Gateway site located at RajajinagarMalleswaram Junction in North Bangalore, India.

The mall totals 1.1 million square feet, is the first lifestyle mall in Bangalore, and was designed by HOK, New York.

AWA designed the lighting for the Brigade Gateway complex by establishing focal points and a distinct visual hierarchy across the site, rather than using foot candles and lux levels to dictate the design.

Compositions were created that would guide the team through the design process from conception to

s hop completion. The entry and exit points were conceived as visual vortices, clearly organizing the overall space.

Seen in the plan rendering, the vortices appear to be long glowing spaces that give a hierarchy to the mall.

The Mall interior is unified by the pixelation of both the ceiling and the floor. The triangular forms on the ceiling create a stitch of light for the circulation pathways around the atrium. The pixelation is further emphasized by the projection of an array of stars on the 10m wide Grand Staircase. The streetlight design drew influence from the curved water features that are located along the lake. The custom bollard fixture was created by a local manufacturer and constructed from locally sourced stone. The use of bollard lighting allows the walkways to be lit without the use of any overhead lighting. The combination of the bollards and the tree uplighting creates a specific visual experience for the pedestrian.

The site is long and linear with multiple entrances and viewing points. It was critical to create definite visual nodes for visitor orientation and collection, that would then be connected by a lighting tapestry, creating a visually clean and crisp environment at night. The excitement of the store fronts will then lend an organic growth pattern to the sitecombining the rigor of a well-planned night-time urban environment with the flavors of a local souk or bazaar- and resulting in a great architectural project that augments the sense of community and civic pride.

This downtown Manhattan loft space was reimagined as an expansive showroom carefully designed to exhibit a range of rotating products developed by world class fashion designers. The LED track lighting system has been designed to be hidden into the white painted architectural ceiling beams.

The lighting highlights the architectural features including vintage wooden flooring, bespoke furniture, and architectural accents. We worked on site with the architect and client to focus the lighting on the current clothing collections and architectural features.

Royal Enfield has built its brand around the idea of a motorcycle lifestyle and riding. The lighting design for the store seeks to create an ambience not about uniformity of light, but about the seductiveness of the bike itself. The Act of Dwelling When we think of the “house”, or our homes, we think of the comforts that are afforded to us in those spaces.

The space that we occupy, that we have chosen to occupy or have constructed in order to occupy, exists not as a static thing – it is the literal manifestation of time and space. Heidegger wrote extensively on being and time, never more articulately than in his article on the concept of “Dwelling”. Heidegger frames our occupation of space over time as the act of “dwelling” – a unique activity with a variety of interesting elements and prospects. Understanding the concept of dwelling is crucial to the act of both architecture and lighting design, as the spaces we make aren’t being built to exist at one particular moment – they are being built to be experienced in a variety of different ways over a period of time.

The architectural design of this private residence was based on the Hindu principles of Vastu Shastra.

The adherence and emphasis of these principles for the lighting design was a complex challenge, and informed the lighting design solution for this residence. Our research looked at the principles of Vastu that impact the use of lighting in residential projects, involving “soft light creates positive energy�. By adapting this soft light approach, we were also able to create a high level of visual comfort for the residents.

The Khanna Residence Project includes all exterior faรงade and landscape illumination, as well as interior foyer and interior swimming pool. Bollards illuminate the landscape foliage, stairs and walkways. Local foliage is given special attention with uplights on the trees.

A particularly interesting element is the row of trees planted on the roof garden, also uplit. From the back of the house, their edges shimmer as their silhouettes are revealed from backlighting. The stacked and cantilevered roof tops that arrange the faรงade are illuminated with the reflected glow of downlights, which also cast a bright warmth down the wooden and stone side walls.

The Lee is New York City’s first LEED Silver certified supportive housing by Common Ground.

Common Ground is a New York based organization with a mission to end homelessness. They build and operate housing for homeless and low-income individuals that is well designed with supports in place to help people rebuild their lives. They also have programs in place that offer consistent support, and even have a “Street to Home” program which helps to identify and place individuals in need. This program has had such high rates of success that the City of New York adopted its strategy in 2007. The

residence incorporates environmentally sustainable and energy-efficient design, construction, operation, and maintenance practices. Key green design features include a high performance condensing boiler, drought-resistant landscaping; individual temperature control; water-saving fixtures; high efficiency lighting; and a green roof. The Lee offered multiple lighting challenges- not only were we to use every watt for the lighting systems (lamp and ballasts) judiciously, we also had to respect a very stringent budget with requirements to have minimum maintenance costs as they relate to operational and

energy consumption. The final result was a success, and received attention in the Architect’s Newspaper “These are a few of my favorite things” article, where the architect described the lighting design challenges of the project and was quoted saying “…

Vivarea, Mumbai’s three 41-story towers will establish its landmark presence in the Mumbai skyline. They are positioned to capture stunning views of Mahalaxmi Race Course, and the Arabian Sea for residents. A sprawling 8 acres of development contain a 31,500 square meter podium level which boasts a variety of recreation and fitness activities, and an extensive landscape with special designated areas for children, seniors, entertainment, and outdoor sports and health facilities.

AWA’s approach for the façade lighting was to create a unique installation at the crown of each building, punctuating the skyline with a simple and elegant mark. Back-lit glass with a James Turrell-like effect, textured metal panels, and media mesh were just some of the options developed to create this unique identity. Tracing the building from the crown down to the base would be a line of illuminated balconies which would terminate in its illuminated base, working to draw in residents.

Beau Monde is a development of three residential towers located in the heart of Mumbai. These towers are spread over a 40 acre site with four swimming pools and a club house. Our lighting strategy was to create an elegant and distinct landscape environment, which provided visual and spatial clarity on the one hand and gave the resident an opportunity to personalize spaces as well. Lighting elements in the landscape were integrated with benches to reduce visual clutter. The elevated “Environmental Deck� was lit by moonlight fixtures located at the roof level 170 meters above.

Historical building can have a distinctive architectural character. The materials on the buildings have different types of texture and can range from being very smooth to highly textured. In most historical buildings, a combination of types is used, with a contrasting stone used as a trim or for relief work. The project is located in the Flora Fountain Area of Fort, Mumbai. The 111-year old Edwardian NeoClassical building was once owned by the Ismail Yusuf Trust, and formerly housed banks and offices.

The building now houses the retail giant Zara and is Zara’s largest store in India, covering five floors and a total of 51,300 sq ft.

AWA developed a lighting design that balances conservation concerns related to the heritage facade with clear aesthetic goals. We developed lighting design solution where poetic romanticism goes hand

in hand with practicality, where function meets the emotional characteristics of this Neo Classical Building. This was augmented by seamlessly integrating the lighting hardware into the historical architecture of the facade to maximize the visual impact at night, while minimizing any visible hardware during the day.

The elements of the building, such as the columns and the cornices, are all lit like individual actors on stage. Each floor has been treated with different fixtures for different elements, and they have been

tied together to achieve a harmonious balance.

We endeavored to bring back the grandeur of the structure by highlighting neoclassical identities and geometric forms that run throughout the facade.

In 2008 the Church of Assumption underwent a major renovation. The renovation ensured that all elements of the church remained in keeping with the church’s Gothic tradition. In order to augment the visual fabric of the church, we introduced a layered approach to the lighting. To commemorate the 150th Anniversary of Mumbai University, the Convocation Hall underwent a massive renovation. We delivered an unobtrusive design, reflective of the historical context of the building and the contemporary needs of its users.

For the first time in history, electrical lighting was brought into the building for evening events, increasing the usability of the space. However, in deference to the architectural beauty of the structure, wiring and installation needs were kept to a minimum, and selected fixtures and lamps were designed to blend with the structure’s architectural details.

Our design approach for this project is inspired by the five elements from nature.

Water: Water is the essence of this project. We use the reflective and refractive properties of the water.

Sky: The sky, the moon and its many variations through the course of the year provide different levels and quality of light though the year. Our lighting solution provides variable light that changes with the Lunar cycle. Fire: Several of the light fixtures provide light by using fire- reminiscent of the past. Earth: The Mountains, the dam, the future promenade all provide a frame of reference. Wind: The wind ripples the water, and fans the fire for the torchieres.

Our custom fixture design, “Light Chords”, was inspired by the relationship between light and music, the dynamic interaction between fixture and viewer, modular design principles, and the flexibility of using a single fixture for multiple, diverse functions.

The form of the fixture was derived from the Mbira, the African thumb piano, and the sine wave that describes the path of light and of sound. Light emitted by a series of vertical discs is reflected by a ribbed backing and wave-cut clear glass shapes, toward small dichroic glass panels. The seven colors of the visible spectrum and the seven notes of the

LIGHTING FOR HEALTH & WELLNESS

UTILIZING LATENT PROPERTIES OF LIGHT FOR HEALTH AND WELLNESS Areas of Application: -Hospitals -Assisted Living Spaces -Wellness Center -Offices -Special Needs Areas It is well established, scientifically and empirically, that light triggers critical physiological and psychological responses within human beings. Since most of us spend the majority of our lives in the built environment, the level and quality of light within these buildings has real implications for our health and wellness.

As we become more aware of light’s implications on our physiological and psychological selves, and as technology affords a greater range of options, the questions we ask at the Healthy Lighting Studio at AWA are “How do we translate this information into buildable lighting specifications?” and “How do we incorporate knowledge available empirically and in the laboratory into our built environment, and get it built right?” At AWA, we have been developing the specifications for these kinds of lighting solutions, so that they actually get implemented in projects. We are listing the variables connected to the problem and possible solutions that AWA has developed.

Some of the points we are focusing on are listed below.

1. Incorporate Biophilic Patterns Using Light: A constant disconnection from natural environments can negatively affect your mental health. This is an ongoing problem existing in our society today, as most of our life is spent in the indoor environment, continually being bombarded by the dirty energy given off by the electronic devices that we are constantly connected to.

Tote (AWA Project) Appropriate lighting aids in reducing stress, increasing tranquility and responding to the desire of contact with nature within healthcare facilities. This can be reinforced through the use of natural patterns such as cloud movement, ocean waves, and foliage patterns that can create a visual connection to nature in an enclosed environment. The movement of light over time can also help in alleviating the stress brought about from artificial lighting [1,3,21].

2. Combat Stress with Color and Sound: Alternate methods to treat stress or anxiety without medication or to improve mood and focus need to be

made easily accessible for those who experience stress.

Color therapy, or chromotherapy, is the use of color in various forms for the purpose of creating balance and health in the human system. Colors are used to trigger the release of neurochemicals in brain.

4. Radio Frequency Interference (RFI): The rapid current switching of sensitive audio and radio equipment may cause radio frequency interference, or an audible buzzing noise. Any sensitive equipment that is in close proximity to this wiring can pick up the RFI and generate noise into its system. RFI can also cause flickering of lights. Flicker performance has been found to be related to the LED power electronic driver. Whether visible or invisible, flicker can trigger headaches, migraines, fatigue, epilepsy, and other neurological responses and has even been found to degrade reading performance [18]. Another health concern regarding RFI is that skin is susceptible to absorbing radio frequencies when constantly being

3. Energy Field Dissonance / Disruptive Harmonics: Our bodies are constantly being bombarded with electromagnetic frequencies. The skin is a good absorber of energy; therefore constant exposure to EMF can also lead to biochemical changes to ones skin, and contribute to headaches and public anxiety [6]. All lighting circuits connected to a building’s main electricity create electric fields all the time, even when the lights are switched off. Electromagnetic frequencies, or EMF, are a result of the LED power supply switching

Electromagnetic Fields (Lisa Gawlas) the supplied AC voltage into a DC voltage. Achieving such results in a circuit with inductance produces an electric field around it. In many cases the lamp fixture is plastic, which does not block transmission of the field [12]. As a result, the field can interfere with electrical products around them, even pacemakers or neurological stimulators [6]. One solution is the use of chandeliers made of organic materials and crystals such as orgonite in individual patient rooms. Such an organic material has been found to protect people from EMF radiation. It can be used to attract and promote the free flow of positive light energy and decreasing the amount of negative man-made energy from today’s technology so that patients can exist in a healthy state of being [22].

Radio Frequency Interference (Wall to Wall) over exposed to it. For the average person, the majority of symptoms caused by exposure to ambient levels of radio frequency are caused by biochemical changes in the skin [23].

Methods to block harmful magnetic and electronic energy fields from lighting hardware from entering into our buildings and from traveling from room to room should be incorporated into the design of health facilities. This can be handled through the use of light fixtures with integrated filters to reduce emission of radio frequencies.

5. Wireless Controls: In a typical hardwired lighting system, control signals are sent using communication wires. However, the wiring of this system can emit electronic magnetic frequencies that contribute to disturbances in sleep patterns. In a wireless RF system, control devices communicate through the air using radio waves, which eliminates the need for control wiring [24], and decreasing patients’ exposure to unhealthy energy that can also contribute to disturbed sleeping patterns [15]. Continuous lowlevel human exposure to RF fields produced by base stations and local wireless networks have shown no detrimental affects to human health. Due to their lower frequency, at similar RF exposure levels, the body absorbs up to five times more of the signal from FM radio and television than from base stations of wireless controls. The frequencies used in FM radio (around 100 MHz) and in TV broadcasting (around 300 to 400 MHz) are lower than those employed in wireless

technology (900 MHz and 1800 MHz) [7]. A wireless system also permits the introduction of circadian lighting into healthcare facilities, allowing the light color temperature to automatically change depending

9. Lighting for Women Night Shift Nurses: In a series of studies, breast cancer risk was found to be increased among subjects who frequently did not sleep during the period of night when melatonin levels

This ability can aid in decreasing potential disturbances in sleep patterns.

The introduction of artificial windows with changing scenes can aid in syncing circadian rhythms. A window that produces scenes that represents the changing and passing of time throughout the day can also provide the changing of wavelengths and light levels can help sync one’s master biological clock [2]. Alternately, providing AWA’s patent pending “Horizon Light” can help in fixing circadian disruption.

Westfriedhof Station (Ingo Maurer) are at their highest. It was also found that exposure to light at night has been found to increase the risk of breast cancer, by suppressing the nocturnal production of melatonin which in turn could increase the release of estrogen by the ovaries [16]. This can be a problem for women nurses who work night shifts, constantly being exposed to light.

6. Providing Appropriate Circadian Stimulus: The impact of light on a person will vary depending on their physiological state. All individual’s body clocks are set differently from one another. It isn’t possible to know the setting of one’s clock without obtaining physiological info; therefore the right light at the wrong time can have the opposite of its desired effect [5]. A lighting design solution should be introduced that addresses the stimulation of the circadian system, the time of day that is best to be exposed to blue light, or energizes inhabitants during the day. Such a system should be implemented architecturally through wall

Therefore, the wrong type of light at the wrong time can negatively impact the ability of sleep to occur at the right part of the circadian cycle, especially for those who exhibit problems with syncing

Light pods in nursing break rooms can be useful for energizing nurses throughout the day. Light therapy has been shown to help energize nurses, improve moods by increasing self-confidence, positivity, social awareness, conversation skills and sensory stimulation [19]. Short light therapy breaks can assist in reinforcing their circadian rhythms so that they’re able to rest later on, and improve their mood and performance throughout the day.

Having control over a lighting system that can dynamically change light being delivered from circadian effective to noncircadian effective can be helpful in reinforcing circadian rhythms or energizing night shift workers. Faux skylights can also be implemented to bring wavelengths that simulate daylight into a space that has no access to natural daylight, therefore improving their moods and reinforcing circadian rhythms [11,13].

The incorporation of a firefly inspired ceiling which emits deep purple light, or light with wavelengths that resembles the night sky can aid in calming individuals and putting them to sleep, eliminating wavelengths that can disrupt sleep. [9].

ABHAY WADHWA DESIGN PRINCIPAL I CEO I New York Abhay Wadhwa, Founder and Design Principal of AWA Lighting Designers, sees lighting beyond its conventional purpose. Here he crafts a story using lighting design and technology to create moments of experience, that factor into the psyche and emotions of those who work, live or visit the spaces designed

by AWA. While doing so, he is seeking innovative solutions that challenge convention while augmenting the integrity of the architects’ vision. Pragmatic lighting design nestles comfortably with artistry.

Abhay founded AWA Lighting Designers in 2002. Abhay has been intently and quietly focused on questioning the lighting zeitgeist since. Based in Brooklyn NY, he works extensively with the world’s leading architecture and design firms in the fields of commercial and mixeduse developments, urban planning, transportation, infrastructure, hospitality, and healthcare. He is an internationally acclaimed keynote speaker, educator and author of numerous advanced light engineering and cultural lighting articles, and has worked with the United Nations Foundation on projects that address issues that marginalize many of the world’s population.

Most recently, he was asked to work with the Rural Haiti Project and Ethiopia’s Mary Joy Aid Through Development to improve the infrastructure, and in turn the lives of its residents. He has also been referred as the “Poet of Light” by a Canadian journalist, and in lighter moments, he takes this title very seriously.

Abhay is inspired by the cultural and emotional effect of lighting, and aspires to make a difference in our visual environment with his passion for his craft. A love of technology means he continues to find innovative solutions to stretch light so it goes deep into the shadows allowing both light and dark to harmoniously co-exist. The results are breathtaking projects that evoke a response from all those who work, live or visit the spaces designed by Abhay and AWA. Abhay’s

high design content and technical prowess are at the cutting edge of what is being designed in the 21st century. Abhay is pushing the technical paradigms with the development of an innovative fixture that draws inspiration from other fields - theater, optical engineering, and lamp technology – and offers a multi-layered approach to directing light. His projects respect local cultural expectations while retaining a larger sense of purpose within the world order with integrity and pushing the design envelope. Together, Abhay’s inventiveness and his design acumen have won competitions bringing in many highly visible projects for AWA. These include the Singapore Consulate in New York; a 14 million sft Mall in Central Asia; a complete integrated township for 100,000 residents in Saudi Arabia; Hotels in Africa; the Dubai Sixth Crossing Bridge, the tallest and longest single arch span bridge in the world; the renowned Peak Tower in Hong Kong; the lobby at 575 Lexington Avenue in NYC for Silverstein Properties; Bushwick Inlet Park, a LEED Gold-Rated center for the State Parks Department in Brooklyn, NY; and Brigade Gateway/ WTC project in Bangalore, India. Abhay also won the Flos/ Elle Décor international fixture design competition with his design for “Light Chords”, a fixture suggestive of the form of a traditional African plucked instrument, the Mbira.

Abhay has also brought these leadership skills into the classroom for the past five years, believing that passing on the accumulated knowledge that comes from designing and communicating with global industry leaders is critical to inspiring developing designers to generate new lighting paradigms. He has been serving as an Adjunct Professor for the Graduate Lighting Design Program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s (RPI) esteemed Lighting Research Center (LRC) since 2003.

Abhay holds a Master’s of Science Degree in Lighting from the Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York, and pursued graduate studies at the University of Southern California (USC). He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture from Sir JJ College of Architecture in Mumbai, India and worked as an architect in Mumbai.

Abhay was nominated to “40 under 40 Hall of Fame”

by BD+C in the United States in 2009. Abhay won the GE Edison Award of Excellence, the IIDA Award, the Lumen Award, and the Paul Waterbury Award of Excellence for lighting the George Washington Bridge Towers in New York and New Jersey. He is the recipient of many prestigious industry awards, including the International Illumination Design Award (IIDA) for his work on the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Abhay also served as Chairman of the IESNA International Relationships Committee for three years, placing him at the center of a growing global lighting design dialogue.

Sitaraman is the director of India/ South Asia for AWA Lighting Designers. As a senior industry professional with more than 40 years in the industry, his leadership enables the company to further expand its footprint in the fast growing Indian, Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian marketplaces.

Justin is trained as an architect. His visual and design style is based on the creativity of form and space. Through his work in architecture he has learned ways of using both form and space to create the sense of new life and function, and now with AWA he is using that experience with his knowledge of lighting to create amazing design.

Anurie Shah is an Associate in the AWA Mumbai office. She leads the design team and oversees all aspects of the design process from conceptualization through construction.

With experience in all aspects of the architectural lighting industry, from design, engineering, manufacturing and sales, Mr. Sitaraman is uniquely suited to the role of director. He is an integral part of the team at AWA, and their pursuit of making a dent in the universe with meaningful projects. He brings a balanced perspective to his leadership role for AWA in South Asia.

His day-to-day activities are to act as a client liaison, from concept to construction. He addresses current client concerns and issues, while working to secure additional client engagements. To serve his clients, he oversees the development of technically accurate and client-ready documentation. Prior to joining AWA, Mr. Sitaraman was the country manager and professional lighting consultant for Ligman Lighting India Pvt Ltd. While there he established a strong local Indian presence, growing the company significantly in two years time. Prior to that he was employed by a leading fixture manufacturer in Dubai, UAE, where he generated more than $6 million in annual revenue. Here he oversaw strategic account planning, business development, sales forecasting and delivery. Mr.. Sitaraman is one of the four members of the panel on calibration and testing facilities established by the Department of Science and Technology, by the government of India.

He is experienced in ISO certification requirements and compliance. He stays active with local lighting societies in Asia, and teaches at the Academy of Architecture in Mumbai, India.

Justin has worked at AWA with dedication for over 7 years, exercising creative problem solving strategies and implementing innovative solutions.

Some of the most notable projects that he has worked on are Singapore Chancery, New York; Bushwick Inlet, Brooklyn New York; KAFD Parcel 4.11 & Parcel 5.05, Riyadh Saudi Arabia; Mayar Wellness, Gurgaon India; Godrej Headquarters, Mumbai India; and Bihar Museum, Patna India. He was also an integral member of AWA’s winning team for the Dubai Sixth Creek Crossing Bridge Competition. His eye for detail has lead to the successful execution of several completed projects.

As an associate, Justin occupies a strong leadership position within the company, and continues to guide the team in project development and professional growth. He continues to be responsible for the production of visual representation of the design intent. He has generated Photoshop renderings for everything from skyscrapers and bridges to lobby interiors. He also works on lighting layouts, specifications and details for fixtures.

Justin has earned both a Bachelor’s of Architecture Degree as well as a Bachelor’s of Building Science Degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

While at Rensselaer, he also received a Minor in Lighting at Rensselaer’s Lighting Research Center.

Being born into a family with a lighting background she inherited the passion from them. Her grandfather started a lighting manufacturing and sales company where she occasionally visited but always left awed by their showroom and lighting workshop. Academically she studied Interior Design at Rachana Sansad School of Interior Design. Her passion for lighting, however, led her to study in the University of Arts London, taking various specialized courses in interior and exterior lighting. After completing her education in 2009, she joined AWA as a Junior Designer. Since joining the team, she has progressed to being a integral part of the AWA International team.

Anurie has worked at AWA with diligence for over 7 years. Anurie represents the company from a marketing stand point and has led the Mumbai team as a whole for various existing projects. She has worked on multiple concept presentations, and enjoys discussions with architects and clients on projects at concept stage.

Anurie has worked on a diverse span of projects from residential, commercial, to retail. One of her notable projects is the Aarvli Resort in Goa India. She currently has a mix of ongoing projects in different sectors.

Anurie’s other interests include reading, travelling and music. She has a keen interest in theatre and watches a myriad of plays local and international.

She aspires to travel the world and see new spaces and cultures more often.

PRINCIPAL’S INTERVIEW Tell us about yourself.

I was a wild kid in architecture school. No focus, but loads of energy. Thankfully, I found my calling fairly early when I fell in love with lighting. I have always wanted to design lit spaces which are not only culturally sensitive but awe-inspiring.

What is your design philosophy?

I perceive light as a plastic medium, a medium with a certain volume, a medium with a certain porosity which fills the space- some of it you can walk through and I call that ambient light, while the other type creates boundaries and edges and defines space. It is like luminous clay, to be sculpted and colored for art, and then diagnosed and modulated for functional requirements.

Tell us about the projects you have worked on recently in India as well as abroad.

One of the most interesting projects is Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Bridge, Dubai. This bridge connects Bur Dubai to Deira. At 201 meter height, it is the largest single arch span bridge in the world. The concept for lighting of the Dubai Sixth Crossing Bridge is derived from the significance that Islam places on the tradition of the sighting of the crescent moon as a basis for measuring time, and on the Lunar Cycle.

One of our most exciting projects includes Tote in Mumbai. While designing the lighting here, I had numerous design discussions with the architects and while looking for an inspirational benchmark, we found an image of day light flittering through dense foliage. And that was it – I had a hook. Once the vision was clear, we had the creative courage to carry it thought the entire process, refining and tweaking as we developed the design. We have also designed Blue Frog in Mumbai. I was shown the initial elevation and I saw the whole nodal structure of the seating as one big light fixture, tying the whole space together.

We’ve also worked on Medi City in Gurgaon, which is a holistic health center. I wanted to create an uplifting and happy space far removed from how we generally see hospitals.

When did you decide that you eventually wanted to be a designer?

I guess I was always looking at things differently.

Growing up in India, there is always the peer pressure of getting a “good percentage” and then going to the IIT’s. However, I was fortunate that my parents never forced to do so. So when I got into design school, it took me a few years of abuse and several discouragements from my professors and peers to realize that I had found my calling.

How did your classmates react when they saw your designs and original creations?

My classmates in undergrad could not figure out what I was up to. I guess they did not take me seriously. I don’t blame them because there were no synergies with most of them. I was looking for inspirations and stimulations from unconventional sources- pretty much anywhere I could find it.

Who are your inspiration?

I am inspired by many things: Nature, seeing sunrises from an airplane 40,000 feet up in the air, musicians that stir the chords of your soul, chefs that cook with an internalized understanding of taste and ingredients, walking urban environments at night, and understanding how people from different cultures see light. As for people, James Turrell is a very inspiring light artist. And then there are two of my professorsMark Rea and Russ Leslie at the Lighting Research Center who have always inspired me to do and be better.

How do you approach a new design?

When I create something for a new project, I am always looking to augment the vision of the architect and owner. Very often, they give us substantial freedom to put in our creativity, and that is a huge responsibility; with responsibility comes accountability. All projects for us are a new challenge to push ourselves creatively and to think out-of-thebox. I like to do challenging jobs and take part in projects that will bring me to an elevated level in lighting design.

What do you have to say to the next generation, particularly for those hoping to follow in your footsteps?

Stay true to yourself, stay honest to your passion and develop an honest work ethic.

I would either be enjoying an inspirational, interactive chat with my team at one of our international offices; or cooking a gourmet meal for friends, which is an unwinding experience; or traveling to some remote place to nourish my creative juices.

PRINCIPAL INTERVIEW IN LJUSKULTUR SWEDEN AWA Lighting Designers’ Design Principal & CEO, Abhay Wadhwa, was selected to be interviewed

by Swedish lighting design magazine Ljuskultur.

The article ‘Without Light There is No Light’ features an interview between writer Anders Modig and Abhay. They discuss his perspective on everything from how he views darkness to the adoption of new technologies.

The light is part of a medium, and it has to be contextualized, that is the critical point. But how should you contextualize if you do not understand the context?

Analyze, feelings, try to understand what the sculptor wants to do, sew it together with the story and the journey.

Darkness has lots of merits, darkness and shadows can be very sexy. And without darkness you can not appreciate light. I love darkness, I love light. Without each other, they do not exist, they are yin and yang.

Here at AWA, we think that a human-centered light is what is needed for the evolution of our built environments - technology should be used primarily to create better environments for people, not just for material and architecture.

Many talk about contextualizing - it has become a fancy word ever since architecture became a global industry. But often this is just a snack, a game for the scenes. If you ultimately build exactly as you would build it in the United States, then you can hardly say that you have contextualized the project!

Light and Dark

Not Opting for Easy

Remember, we have only mastered the light in the last century, since the light has gone from being a resource to being constantly present. During this literary “enlightenment of time,” darkness began to be something dangerous and evil, which, with industrial and technological means, we did not only implemented light, but also forged and cemented a fear of darkness. We at AWA strongly feel that future built environments must have a better understanding of the merits of darkness and shadows - without shadows and darkness, a place is disharmonious. There is a balance between darkness and light, like yin and yang.

There is nothing wrong with using either ramps or colors - but you must dare to look for deeper answers that have the contextual variables to do. And to get deep answers, you need to dare to ask deep questions - to people, not to Google. Try to learn the place’s zeitgeist, how can you develop it? These questions are rarely asked - instead, many only ask ‘which fitting should we use?’

Light and Culture If you define two poles of the stylistic expression of light design: obviously functional and obviously aesthetic, you can place most cultures somewhere between them. But at the same time light is also a primary indicator of a region’s technological and economic status. It’s enough to take a look far from the city skyline to get a lot of information: To what extent has a city incorporated outdoor light, How visible is the city from the distance? Answers to these questions are often seen as measures of technological and economic growth.

On Knowing the Client There are some universal rules about light that you cannot change: It has a certain range, a certain wavelength, a certain color ... but then it’s about analyzing this: Why does the client prefer this type of light, this color temperature, these levels?
