Flat Stan First Aid We are an authorised deliverer of Flat Stan First Aid workshops. A concept that is fast gaining popularity nationwide. Flat Stan is a character (based on the creators own son!) who features on both our manikins and the books we use. We believe that children can play a proactive role as First Aiders even if its just dialling 999 and calling for help. But we have seen children as young as five who have been able to administer life saving First Aid. For example there was the child in Wales who administered a simple back slap to a peer who was choking. Even if children are not strong enough to perform CPR they can be trained to show adults how to do it. As such we cover Emergency Plan, looking at how to call for help CPR (using one of our special Flat Stan manikins!) Choking, Bleeds, scalds, bumps, and lumps The aim of the course is to teach children (between 4 -11) the basics of First Aid. The course is 3 hours long but has a 30 min break in between for refreshement.

Each child receives a free workbook which has a certificate at the end and even a sticker for those who want one!

So what activities do kids do? They get to play with bandages on fake wounds... They get to practice bandaging on each other using all sorts of fake wounds and bandages we have available They get to practice heart compressions on special manikins to the beat of Staying alive! In the end they will become “Flat Stan First Aiders

Below, is out son Alex, modelling a bandage, he is our first Flat Stan First Aider. Mind though he had to earn it!

We do not currently have any open Flat Stan First Aid Workshops running but we can come to you! We can do parties, homes, community centres, schools, and events. That said we sometimes combine with parents first aid courses. Please email AWAFirstAid@gmail.com for more information We hope in April to be able to run some open classes.

First Aid Tip Automatic External Defibrillator (AED’s) These devices really can make the difference between life and death. When someone has a heart attack, it means an artery carrying oxygen rich blood to the heart becomes blocked. If its not reopened quickly that part of the heart could die, but the heart usually continues beating. Unlike Cardiac arrest where the heart can suddenly stop beating, triggered by a malnfunction in the electrical signal. This means the heart can no longer pump blood to the brain or other vital organs.

What the AED does is it attempts to “shock the heart back into a normal heart beat. It has to be applied within 10 minutes otherwise the heart is likely to stop completely and the casualty will die. Note you do NOT need training to use an AED. Shops, community centres, sports complexes should have one.

The heart is like a jelly, it can either pump regularly, or irregularly like the wobble of a jelly.

So why do we allow advertising in our own newsletter? Simply put, we believe in business to business. That means we believe in mutual advertising of local business. They plug us, we plug them. Worry not though we ONLY advertise business we have used and trust.
