Things have continued apace since our last issue and we now welcome both Danescourt Roofing in Wolverhampton, and our new colleagues at Billsave Energy, now re-named Avonside Energy. It’s amazing how quickly the year is moving and with it, ever more development for the Group.

We have an exciting ERP system we are preparing to roll out through the Group and there are many exciting developments across the entire Group.

BS5534 Amendments – 12 months on OUR GROUP CHIEF OPERATIONS OFFICER, ANDREW MORLEY EXPLORES AMENDMENTS TO BS5534, THE SLATING AND TILING STANDARD, 12 MONTHS ON FROM THE LATEST UPDATES, WHICH DROVE THE SECTOR TOWARDS DRY FIX SYSTEMS AND AWAY FROM THE TRADITIONAL MORTAR-BASED APPROACH. — Over many years the roofing sector has evolved in terms of materials, products, and techniques used in mainstream roofing situations.

Underpinning those changes have been the updates and amendments to regulations, of which the most prominent is BS5534. Originally introduced in 1978, the slating and tiling standard has undergone many updates to reflect quality improvements and raised specifications in line with product development, performance standards, and customer expectations.

The latest iteration was just 12 months ago, which built upon the changes first introduced in 2015 that drove the sector in the direction of dry fix systems and away from the traditional mortar-based approach. This was much more of a system-based concept with the mechanical fixing of single lap tiles, hips, and verges that are now the accepted norm.

If we cast our mind back, the logic behind the 2018 changes was to further improve the security, durability and weather tight properties of roofing systems with minimum standards for the manufacturer’s products and took a more rigorous approach to testing and installation. Both challenges that the industry has responded well to.

zones was re-drafted and updated.

The use of counter battens above underlay now needs to be designed in such a way to ensure that the eaves detail avoids troughs or a negative slope, allowing any surface moisture to drain into guttering.

These changes were implemented largely in response to previous system failures. For example, the National House Building Council (NHBC) reported that two-thirds of all their roofing failures were mortar related. So, the updated regulations were a welcomed evidence-based improvement that addressed unsatisfactory methods.

The uptake of BS5534 in the new build sector has been pretty universal, although this appears to be less the case in terms of re-roofing where we still have some way to go to secure the same level of adoption.

WIND UPLIFT

In our own experience, we have found that the adoption of dry fix has reduced our overall level of callbacks, which is a significant positive. The initial cost of training operatives in the new systems has more than been compensated for by this reduction.

Additionally, the new guidelines on underlay zones have contributed to a better-quality roof installation, and Avonside is currently reviewing areas we would like to see included in the next review of BS5534.

So, from our perspective, we would contend that updating BS5534 has achieved a successful outcome for the roofing sector and its clients.

Another key area of concern addressed was related to wind uplift and the guidelines were amended to address this factor. The 2018 amendments to BS5534 recommend a maximum drape of 15mm in order to prevent the transfer of wind loads to the roof covering which it was not designed to resist.

In addition, the directive was designed to ensure underlays are not exposed to the elements for more than a few days to avoid damage from weather extremes that render it unfit for purpose.

Further guidance is given if exposure is anticipated. In these cases, the use of a tarpaulin cover or similar is acceptable. Finally, in this area, the classification for underlays in relation to UK exposure

In general terms, the regulations have been welcomed across the sector and represent a solid piece of regulation that was well thought through and progressive. They have been positive examples of the drive for quality installations, which benefits all parts of the supply chain and results in increased customer satisfaction, fewer callbacks for defective installations and better protection against the elements.

Avonside Worcester Build a Positive Relationship with CALA Homes Midlands OUR FAIRLY NEW WORCESTER BRANCH ARE PROUD TO HAVE WORKED CLOSELY WITH THE SITE MANAGEMENT TEAM TO ACHIEVE THE CREATION OF A 5-STAR HOUSING ESTATE IN A PROJECT IN MALVERN RISE, LEIGH SINTON, WHICH INVOLVED 51 PLOTS AND A SUBSTATION TO ROOF TILE. — The Malvern Rise project maximised the very best of Avonside Worcester’s roof tiling and leadwork services and ran from June 2017 – January 2019. Our Worcester branch particularly enjoyed rising to the challenge of the project brief as it was the first project the branch had worked on with CALA Homes Midlands in this area.

FOSTERING TRUSTED RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE CLIENT

Site working hours were adhered to, which was vital as the local residential houses were situated very close to the Malvern Rise site. This, coupled with the implementation of a traffic management system, succeeded in creating the least amount of inconvenience for local residents and protected CALA Homes Midlands’ reputation in the minds of local residents.

Avonside Worcester are thrilled to report that CALA Homes Midlands are so happy with the standard and service delivered that they have given them another site to start on this year, with glowing references given by the Site Manager, Peter Miles.

On the accomplishment, Avonside Worcester Branch Manager, Jim Brice said: “Being a new client for my branch in this area, it was really important that CALA Homes felt confident in me and the rest of my team.

“I always consider the last roof I completed to be my CV, which is why it was pleasing to receive another project from CALA Homes, purely based on feedback from the Malvern Rise project. Peter, the Site Manager called me to brief me and that he has recommended us and has asked for Avonside Worcester to be used for his next site.

“The CALA Homes MD also lives very close to this site in Leigh Sinton and it’s brilliant to hear that they too are happy with the project completion.”

Avonside Worcester Impress New Client Elan Homes

IT’S NOT JUST CALA HOMES THAT OUR WORCESTER BRANCH HAS BEEN BUILDING A GREAT RAPPORT WITH. — In a project that is still ongoing, the branch has been busy delivering the roofs of 32 plots to current British Standards since February 2019 at the Walcot Meadow site on Walcot Lane in Drakes Broughton, Worcestershire for new client, Elan Homes. One of the main goals for the roof tiling and leadwork project, which is due to be completed in February 2020, was to build a positive relationship with the branch’s new client.

HOW THE WORCESTER TEAM DEVELOPED A STRONG RELATIONSHIP WITH THE CLIENT

Our operatives made sure that all communication was sent to the relevant parties to ensure that Avonside didn’t negatively affect the working relationship between Elan Homes and their new local residents.

Clear and honest communication lines were used.

During the regular toolbox talks Avonside Worcester held with operatives they highlighted the importance of respecting local residents in safeguarding Elan Homes’ reputation with their new residents.

Where possible, the Worcester team always aimed to achieve consistency by ensuring that the same roofers attended inspector visits, so they had opportunities to build trusting relationships with the site management team.

Ploughcroft deserve a pat on the back for the brilliant job they have done on Trinity Academy’s new 1400m² roof in Halifax, West Yorkshire. In just 4 weeks, the school has a completely new roof, with Ploughcroft using Sika’s low-odour Decothane Ultra Roof membrane for the large-scale project.

Ploughcroft Help Customer Enjoy More Natural Light WHEN THE FLAT ROOF BELONGING TO PLOUGHCROFT’S HUDDERSFIELD-BASED CUSTOMER NEEDED REPLACING, PLOUGHCROFT TOOK THE OPPORTUNITY TO INSTALL A STYLISH ROOF MAKER ROOF LANTERN TO BRIGHTEN UP THE CUSTOMER’S HOME. — Luke Hartley and the rest of his Ploughcroft team carefully removed the coping stones of the existing surface, fully protecting the kitchen below from roofing works and temporarily disconnecting lights for safety.

After an aperture for the roof lantern was made, the rest of the roof was boarded over, ready for the application of the Sika flat roof system. Once Sika’s 2-coat liquid plastic roofing system, which carries a 15-year product warranty and a 10-year workmanship warranty through Competent Roofer, was applied, the new, triple-glazed Slimline® Rooflight by Roof Maker was installed.

Once the internal reveals had been plasterboarded, the electrics were reinstated, the original coping stones re-bedded, and new lead flashing was installed against the main house wall to finish the pleasing project.

As well as having a house flooded with light, the customer now enjoys having the highest energyperforming roof lantern on the market. With a U-Value of 0.6, maximum glass and minimalistic aluminium frame, Roof Maker’s Slimline® Rooflight truly combines seamless style with energy efficiency.

UNDER THE ROOF BRACKNELL ROOFING PROJECTS

Bracknell Roofing Help McCarthy & Stone Roof Their New Retirement Home the project. The harsh January and February weather also proved a challenge. However, with the forwardthinking pre-ordering of tiles and the strategic timing of deliveries, nothing could prevent a finish that was on time and within budget.

KEEPING THE CLIENT HAPPY

WILLIAM BRADFORD COURT IS AN OVER-60S RETIREMENT DEVELOPMENT IN BAWTRY, DONCASTER. MAIN CONTRACTOR, MCCARTHY & STONE HIRED BRACKNELL ROOFING TO PROVIDE FLAT AND PITCHED ROOFING SERVICES TO INSTALL 1,600M² OF ROOFING FOR THE MAIN RESIDENTIAL BLOCK AND SECONDARY BUILDING. — New generation, open-gauge Sandtoft Flanders Neo Pantiles made from natural alluvial clay were used for the outer slopes of the main residential block and the secondary building. Terracotta Red Shires also manufactured by Sandtoft were employed too. Both roof tile types used boast the durability and longevity to achieve the low maintenance qualities that McCarthy & Stone were after, whilst being costeffective and aesthetically pleasing solutions. The Flanders Neo Pantiles, which are designed to make the installation process quicker and easier, and the Terracotta Red Shires, which have a BRE Green Guide rating of A+, were fixed by being clipped and nailed.

When it came to the roof tiling element of the project, the inner slopes had a different tile to the outer slopes so it was necessary for the Bracknell roofing operatives to ensure that the top course of tiling either side of the ridge on the roof lined up with the different coverings, guaranteeing that the ridge was sitting correctly.

OVERCOMING RESTRICTED SITE ACCESS

The project could have suffered due to the restricted site access, which meant that transporting roofing materials to the working areas was tricky throughout the 6-week contract period. The nature of the site meant that there was almost no room for movement on site or for mistakes in the movement of products to

Through their project management, Bracknell developed a close working relationship with McCarthy & Stone’s Site Manager. This co-operation and communication continued throughout the contract, with the client relying entirely on Bracknell Roofing’s scheme control.

With the developer keen to complete sales of the apartments as early as possible, they appreciated Bracknell’s roofers chatting to prospective buyers about the quality of the products and the workmanship that were being applied during the project, whenever they visited the site.

On the success of the project, Ian Bladon, Regional Contracts Director at Bracknell Roofing said “This was a tricky site because of the tight access. As ever, we enjoyed excellent working relations with McCarthy & Stone’s site manager, and that helped a lot. Nothing was going to prevent us from finishing the job on time and to budget, not even the inclement January and February weather.

“As a side issue, the client was endeavouring to complete sales of the apartments as early as possible.

Quite a few prospective buyers came on site while we were there, and we played our part by chatting to them about the quality of products and workmanship that were being applied.”

UNDER THE ROOF BRACKNELL ROOFING PROJECTS

Bracknell Roofing Help Lawrence Baker with their Largest Contract in 15 Years IT WAS ONCE AN ATTRACTIVE COUNTRY HOUSE UNTIL DESIGN AND BUILD CONTRACTORS, LAWRENCE BAKER ADAPTED IT TO PROVIDE CARE TO PEOPLE SUFFERING FROM DEMENTIA AND OTHER AGE-RELATED ILLNESSES AS PART OF THEIR BROADBRIDGE HEATH SCHEME. — When the Broadbridge Heath care home and associated nearby buildings in Horsham, West Sussex needed re-roofing, Bracknell Roofing were happy to help their regular clients.

In addition to the main roofing installation, Bracknell Roofing were also pleased to provide help to the main contractor on housing for bin stores, a variety of pipework, lead clad balcony cheeks, lightning conductor clips and bars for solar panels.

The overall contract period was six months, with the project being separated into 3 different elements, the bungalows, the nursing home and care home.

Bracknell are proud to say that they met the tight timeframe of five weeks to complete the main nursing home block roof.

DEALING WITH IRREGULAR ROOF SHAPES

A PARTNER RATHER THAN JUST A SUPPLIER

When it came to installation, Bracknell Roofing had to rise to the challenge of re-roofing the irregular roof shapes of the main care home building, two cottages and apartment, and they’re pleased to report that they enjoyed the complexity of the project! Out-of-the-box thinking was needed for the roofs that had valleys, lead dormers, lead clad balcony walls, single-ply pipework, solar panel bars and single-ply lift shaft boxes making the shapes unconventional. Due to the irregular roof shapes, BMI Redland’s Heathland vertical 23 Autumn (sanded) plain concrete tiles were used (25,000 of them in fact!) as they feature variation in hanging length and irregular sides, which suited the care home’s uneven roof shape perfectly.

Bracknell maximised the advantages of 20,000 concrete Gemini Ember Blend roof tiles, manufactured

by Forticrete as they require minimal maintenance, a benefit Bracknell wished to pass onto Lawrence Baker.

The Gemini tiles have a ‘double cambered’ design, meaning this interlocking concrete tiles’ design allows for fewer tiles to be required to cover the same roof area than a typical double lapped plain tile would need.

This contributed to the reduction of the environmental impact by cutting the amount of quarried aggregate used and haulage movement per laid m².

OTHER SERVICES PROVIDED

As well as roof tiling, Bracknell also provided flat roofing services, installing 850m² of Renolit single-ply, including insulation.

Working alongside and collaborating with the carpenters, the Bracknell team ensured the roofing process was completed in a strict and strategic order for the speed of completion, without ever compromising on the quality of works delivered.

Lawrence Baker found Bracknell Roofing to be a partner rather than just a supplier, large enough to trust yet sufficiently small to care. All works completed

by Bracknell Roofing were fully compliant with the BS 5534:2014.

Bracknell’s Contracts Manager, Freddie Wade said: “For the Bracknell Roofing team, management cooperation starts well before our operatives go on-site and doesn’t end until the contract is completed in its entirety. Lawrence Baker’s Site Manager told us that having a sub-contractor such as Bracknell Roofing had been a bonus, with excellent input throughout. The project was completed on time, in spite of the tight schedule, and within budget.”

Derek Paramanis, Lawrence Baker’s Site Manager for the Broadbridge Heath project added: “Lawrence Baker have used Bracknell Roofing for about 5-6 years now and for a good reason. I’ve always found Bracknell to be very professional, knowledgeable and good at answering questions. They don’t run away from any issues that arise and are great problem solvers. Avonside and Bracknell NHBC Pride in the Job Award Winning Projects

THE 39TH NATIONAL HOUSE BUILDING COUNCIL (NHBC) PRIDE IN THE JOB AWARDS TOOK PLACE IN JUNE, RECOGNISING THE EXCELLENCE IN ON-SITE MANAGEMENT, CELEBRATING HOW COMMITTED AND TALENTED SITE MANAGERS CREATE EXCEPTIONAL HOMES. ­ — After competing against 16,000 site managers following a year of stringent judging, 450 quality award winners were hand-picked for their high standards on site. The 450 winning site managers will now progress to compete for the Seal of Excellence Awards and Regional Winner titles.

We’re pleased to announce that our Worcester, Cannock and SM Roofing branches all played key contributing roles as part of the site teams on 12 developments that saw the associated site managers achieve a prestigious NHBC Pride in the Job award.

All three sites also saw the associated site managers receive prestigious Pride in the Job accolades.

Speaking about the NHBC Pride in the Job recognition, Andy Brooks said: “I have enjoyed working on and I’m delighted to be associated with these sites.

It was a challenge at times, but I am proud that we were able to provide the continuity of labour to achieve the quality and speed of the construction demanded.”

Women in Construction: Progress is Being Made! is to celebrate the commitment, contribution and enthusiasm that women bring to the roofing industry.

INCREASED OPENNESS TOWARDS THE IDEA OF A FEMALE MANAGER

Research also shows that people are becoming more open to the idea of having a female manager. In January 2018, human resources company, Randstad surveyed more than 5,400 construction, property, engineering and rail professionals in a bid to discover what the key barriers and challenges were that women faced on the journey to senior leadership. When asked how having a female manger would impact construction workers’ jobs, a staggering 93% of respondents said it would either stay the same or have a positive effect.

STEREOTYPES ARE HARD TO SHAKE. MISCONCEPTIONS ARE DIFFICULT TO CORRECT. FEAR IS A CHALLENGE TO OVERCOME. — For decades, construction has been considered by many as a ‘man’s profession’, with many women scared to enter the construction workforce. For some, it was never even on their radar as a possible career path.

INCREASED AWARENESS

Despite stereotypes both inside and outside the construction industry persisting, things are looking up.

There are some brilliant and popular industry events to promote the positive and welcoming attitude towards women in construction. The Women in Construction Summit was held at Olympia London on 16th May and attended by over 700 people who gained industry insights from over 60 speakers and benefited from 30 sessions and networking. The Summit aims to re-ignite women’s passion for construction by inviting empowering women to speak at the event and creating a lively community of like-minded professionals.

Female roofers also took over Vox Conference centre, Resort World in Birmingham on June 24th for the Women Roofing Conference 2019, with this year’s theme being ‘choosing change’. The ethos of the event

WOMEN MAKE UP 14% OF UK CONSTRUCTION PROFESSIONALS

According to the construction career website, GoConstruct, women make up around 14% of the professionals in the construction industry in the UK BUT the website states that it believes that this figure can only increase, with more and more women now opting for construction jobs.

Although the industry as a whole needs to work on improving the statistics of the number of women working in construction, the reality of most women in construction actually paints a more positive picture of the experience some women have in the industry.

WHAT DOES OUR GROUP SHEQ MANAGER SARAH BURKE THINK?

One such lady who has enjoyed (and still is enjoying!) a worthwhile career in construction is our Group SHEQ Manager, Sarah Burke.

UNDER THE ROOF INDUSTRY NEWS “I have been in the construction industry for 5 years.

“When I first joined Avonside, I had left what you might call a “male dominated” occupation (the police force) to join another but I was somewhat daunted by construction because of the image I had in my mind of construction sites.”

INITIAL WORRIES

“I think the initial impression I had of a construction site was somewhat like the ‘Auf Wiedersein Pet’ days where all the guys sat round and had the banter, sometimes to the extreme.

“My imagination ran so wild, with me thinking that I would walk into a site cabin and everyone would turn around to look ‘OMG there is a woman on site!’

“The truth is, the industry is far more professional than people give it credit for. Particularly roofing.

There is a misconception that you fell into construction because you couldn’t succeed at anything else.”

THE NEW IMAGE OF CONSTRUCTION

“The ‘new image’ of construction is the one of awardwinning apprentices, much like those that Avonside have, that are chomping at the bit to succeed and develop.

“I am in awe at some of the projects that our roofers are out there working on.”

MY EXPERIENCE

“While I have heard people, such as speakers at the Women in Construction conferences speak about negative experiences, for example in relation to comments about their physical ability like “Are you okay coming up this scaffold love?”, I haven’t experienced anything negative within the industry myself.

“Everyone that I have encountered within the industry have been very friendly and have welcomed me as a woman within the industry. I can honestly say my misconceptions were flipped on their head almost straight away!

“I feel that women have a very calming influence on site. In fast paced situations whereby, deadlines have to be met and construction staff are under significant strain I have found that men respect women for the way they can put issues across. I have also seen that, although roles can be physically challenging, there are females that are getting stuck into trades.

“I enjoy walking onto sites where a male and female site manager and assistant site manager are working together to get projects completed.

“The CITB Go Construct website states that 14% of industry professionals are female. We should look to encourage more females into the industry, into all roles across the board.

“No two days are ever the same for me. I love getting out onto site and getting stuck in with the guys.

Having technicalities explained to me and coming up with solutions together is hugely enjoyable.

“Males and females in construction can be a very positive blend! Being a female in construction does not put you at a disadvantage!

“I would even encourage my daughter to go for one of her career ambitions of being an Architect, because I know that she would be well received by the industry.

“I also don’t think we should allow the industry to distinguish between male and female roles, we can all to the same things, we just achieve the end results differently!”

With the roofing industry in particular facing issues such as the skills shortage, embracing half the population for recruitment seems like a no-brainer! As a proud equal-opportunities employer, Avonside currently employ 75 women (out of a workforce 292), with one appointment of a female employee to senior management just ten months ago. UNDER THE ROOF STAFF EVENTS

Surprise Guest for CEO’s Golf Day HE’S PLAYED FOR NEWCASTLE UNITED, LIVERPOOL FC, SOUTHAMPTON FC, HAMBURG AND THE ENGLAND TEAM ITSELF. — He’s managed Newcastle United, Fulham FC and Manchester City, leading all three clubs to win promotions as champions in his first full seasons at each team. He’s been awarded the title of European Footballer of the Year twice and was crowned PFA Players’ Player of the Year and Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year ... and now he’s attending Avonside’s Annual Golf Day! Accompanied by Avonside Senior Directors, our CEO Tony will be inviting a selection of customers and senior figures within the housing and construction sectors for his annual Golf Day on 10th September and among guests will be distinguished former England forward and manager, Kevin Keegan.

The event will be held on the iconic Brabazon course at the world-famous state-of-the-art Belfry Hotel and Resort in Birmingham.

The course has served as the global stage for many legendary golf moments, from Sam Torrance’s game-changing putt that won the prestigious 1985 Ryder Cup match for the European Team or the spectacle of Christie O’Connor Jr’s 2 iron across the lake at the 18th.

The golfers will start the day off right with a hearty breakfast at Ryder Grill, whilst those whose swing is a bit rusty and need a warm up can squeeze in some last practice on the driving range whilst everyone registers. Tony and his guests will then take to the greens at around 11am where we’re sure some (friendly!) competition will ensue!

To round the day off, everyone will then be treated to a delicious meal served in the contemporary Stafford Suite, where interesting anecdotes and jokes will no doubt be shared. Kevin will present prizes for the Nearest Pin, Winning Team, and Longest Drive, with ample celebrations had for the winners of each.

Avonside’s Hole in One! Okay, the real winning team was SIG Roofing, but our Business Development Director, Phil Bull and Paul Davies, our Senior Contracts Manager at our Midlands Flat Roofing branch still enjoyed a fantastic day taking to the green for the Single Ply Roofing Association’s (SPRA) annual Golf Day. The pair were joined by Bracknell Roofing’s Audit and Compliance Manager, Harry Henderson and Firestone Building Products’ UK National Sales Manager, Andrew Cooper to complete their 4-ball team as the quartet played 18 holes of golf in the beautiful Cotswolds at Heythrop Park Resort on 4th September.

On the tenth hole, the guys had the opportunity to do a trick shot off the tee and got treated to a trick shot show over drinks (to show them how it’s really done!) before tucking into an evening meal as the presentation evening for the golfing took place.

Andy Goes Networking Our Business Development Manager, Andy Kershaw, enjoyed a day of networking at the Shropshire Constructing Excellence Meet the Buyer event on 15th July at The Flaxmill in Shrewsbury. The free event, which was supported by the CITB, was a great opportunity to discuss work opportunities with main contractors and included talks from Shropshire Council and Teleford & Wrekin Council project leaders about the opportunities for business to bid for public sector contracts.

Things Are Adding Up for Our Staff!

A huge congratulations to Bracknell Roofing’s Assistant Management Accountant, Michael Killingbeck for passing his AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) Level 4 Professional Diploma in Accounting in July.

After nearly 4 years of work, the pass is well deserved!

We’d also like to say well done to Emily Shave, our Southampton Residential Roofing Branch Accounts Administrator, for passing her AAT Level 3 Advanced Diploma in Accounting and achieving a Merit. It was only in the November 2018 issue of the staff newsletter that we were congratulating Emily for successfully passing her AAT Level 2 with a Distinction and now she is looking forward to starting her Level 4 Professional Diploma in Accounting this September!

• A well done is in order too for Thomas Leader for achieving his Level 2 Slate & Tile NVQ. Thomas, who completed the qualification with Eastern Region Roof Training Group, is now looking forward to getting his welldeserved ‘Skilled Worker’ blue CSCS card!

Congratulations to Bracknell’s Chris and James on Their NEBOSH Success Bracknell Roofing are on a mission…to have one NEBOSH-trained person in each of their seven branches and their Regional Contractors Director, Chris Beech [pictured] and Branch Sales Manager, James Sibson both achieving their NEBOSH (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) health, safety and environmental practice and management accreditation, helps Bracknell get one step closer to their goal!

Both Chris, who is based at Bracknell’s South East branch in East Sussex and James, who works at Bracknell’s Midlands branch and head office in BurtonUpon-Trent, undertook the two-week training, which is a classroom course that has two very stringent exams at the end.

James said that the course was a fascinating insight into the construction industry as a whole because NEBOSH covers everything from below ground to up in the air and everything between. He said: “It’s this big-picture thinking that is the key to NEBOSH, and the ability to be able to critically analyse a site is invaluable in ensuring everyone’s safety and well-being.”

Chris agreed with James adding: “NEBOSH makes you become hyper-vigilant on-site, and not just

towards your own trade but the site as a whole. This can only be of benefit to everyone because you see things that even the main contractor or the people running the site might not have considered.”

“NEBOSH has certainly made me more aware of our legal duties and responsibilities. Like James, this has enabled me to be much more critically analytical about a site.”

UNDER THE ROOF APPRENTICE AND TRAINEE NEWS

Tyler Crowned Pitched Roofing Champion NOW IN ITS THIRD YEAR, IT HAS RAPIDLY BECOME A POPULAR AND PRESTIGIOUS FIXTURE IN THE ROOFING CALENDAR AND WE’RE PROUD THAT ONE OF OUR APPRENTICES PERFORMED PARTICULARLY WELL IN THE CHALLENGING COMPETITION! — Tyler Pederick [pictured far left, image courtesy of Roofing Today magazine], who trains at the Eastern Region Roof Training Group and is an apprentice at Avonside Braintree, took home the ‘Highly Commended’ award for pitched roofing in the BMI Apprentice of the Year competition, which saw almost 100 hopeful apprentices apply this year.

As a finalist, Tyler was selected to take part in a two-day event at the BMI Academy in South Cerney, Gloucestershire, that tested ‘soft’ skills, such as business planning and presentation skills, as well as technical knowledge, examining every aspect of running a roofing business.

THROWN IN THE DEEP END!

Day one threw the apprentice competitors straight into the deep end, asking them to create a roofing business idea and present it to a panel of judges. To provide inspiration, the apprentices heard previous BMI Apprentice of the Year competitor, Ceiran Peel-Price share his experiences of setting up his Wirral-based contracting business last year. Meanwhile, BMI technical trainer, Alastair Blant, provided expert presentation skills training.

Day two saw the competitors examine a pitched or flat roof and explain any defects the roofs had and how the installation might be repaired. Next, the contestants benefited from Health and Safety tutoring from the NFRC’s Health and Safety officer, Gary Walpole before sitting a written Safe System at Work assessment based on the roof repairs highlighted in the earlier rig assessment.

PUT IN THE SPOTLIGHT!

Later in the day, in what was perhaps the most challenging part of the competition, the finalists had to

deliver a presentation about their own career experiences and goals to a judging panel that included NFRC President and Skyline Roofing Merchant and Contract Director, Steve Revell and SPRA Technical Manager, Dr Ronan Brunton.

After all the hard work, the awards were announced (and celebrated!) at a special gala dinner at the DeVere Cotswolds Water Park hotel, where the apprentices enjoyed their two-day stay courtesy of BMI UK & Ireland on July 3rd. Apprentice at housing association, Incommunites, Matthew Ford, who trains at Leeds College of Building, took home the Pitched Roofing Apprentice of the Year 2019 award, whilst The Roofing Corporation apprentice, Oscar Miller, won the Flat Roofing Apprentice of the Year 2019 accolade and Manchester Building Company apprentice, Connor Pringle, who studies at Bolton College, scooped the ‘Highly Commended’ award for flat roofing.

At a time when the industry is plagued by skills shortages, the BMI Apprentice of the Year competition does a brilliant job at giving the sector’s emerging young talent, support, encouragement and recognition. Thanks for representing Avonside in a positive way Tyler!

UNDER THE ROOF APPRENTICE AND TRAINEE NEWS

Tom Steps Up! SOMETIMES WE’RE CHALLENGED TO DO SOMETHING AT WORK, OR PERHAPS WE EVEN VOLUNTEER TO HELP A COLLEAGUE OUT, AND WE HIT A BRICK WALL. — Perhaps you’ve been in that situation and you’ve had no experience or prior knowledge to help you achieve what you’ve been asked to do?

These challenges didn’t stop our Bid Team Administrator apprentice, Tom Offley from stepping up and helpfully volunteering to produce some reports for our Flat Roofing Divisional Director, Eddie Stanton.

Tom, who is based at our Head Office, soon realised that he wanted to improve his knowledge in order to create better reports. To develop his knowledge, Tom signed himself up to some online training in data analysis with leading online course provider, Udemy.

THE RESULT?

Tom was awarded a certificate which recognises that he has successfully done nine hours of the Business Analysis Fundamentals course, completing the qualification.

The Business Analysis Fundamentals course provides participants with a solid foundation of Business Analysis knowledge and teaches learners things like the intricacies of the Software Development Life Cycles (SDLC) popular with modern businesses and about the modelling techniques used to make requirements understandable to all business and technical stakeholders.

Eddie Stanton commented: “Tom’s latest achievement is a great example of someone wanting to better themselves to produce improved work for the Group, and, having done so, taken the initiative to try and improve himself.”

UNDER THE ROOF CHARITY WORK

Avonside Staff Pedal for Mental Health in Construction AS LIGHTHOUSE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY CHARITY COMPANY SUPPORTERS, WE HAVE PLEDGED TO DONATE AT LEAST £1000 A YEAR TO THE LEADING CONSTRUCTION MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING CHARITY. — However, it wasn’t an obligation that motivated our staff to raise an incredible £913.75 for the organisation’s worthwhile cause.

What moved our Area Director for Scotland, Chris McLean, Group SHEQ Manager, Sarah Burke and Finance Director, Nick Tappin to take on the challenge of cycling 100 miles around London and Surrey in the Prudential RideLondon event on the 4th August was the sad statistic that every single working day two construction workers in the UK take their own life.

WHY IS FUNDRAISING FOR LIGHTHOUSE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY CHARITY IMPORTANT NOW MORE THAN EVER?

Despite fundraising efforts being at an all-time high, the Construction Enquirer reported in early August that, due to pay-outs to construction workers and their families in need increasing by 67%, the charity made a loss in 2018. Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity provided £1.22million in financial support to families last year with nearly one-third of that sum going to people suffering as a result of mental health and wellbeing issues. As a result, the charity made a deficit of £333,272 last year, even though fundraising for their cause has risen and the CITB supplied a £209,000 grant to help train mental health first aid instructors.

A WHEELIE GOOD TIME!

Just because the cause is a serious one, and the fundraising was much needed, it doesn’t mean to say that the Avonside team didn’t thoroughly enjoy their cycling experience! Organised by London Marathon Events Limited, who are the people behind the famous Virgin Money London Marathon, and SweetSpot Group, the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 is described as being “the prefect traffic ride for a range of cycling abilities.” The route took cyclists through the likes of Hampton Court, Kingston, and Wimbledon to finish at The Mall.

Such a long route required putting in the hours when it came to training. Sarah was training at least 6

months in advance was treated to picturesque scenery while out for practice rides in the run-up to the event.

All of our Avonside cycling champions, who proudly sported their Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity branded cycle shirts for the big day, reported that the event was well organised with a lively atmosphere. Speaking about the experience, Chris [pictured below] said: “A 04:45 am alarm call made for a very early start to the day. Fortunately, the sun was shining and there was very little wind.

“We covered the first 40 miles with ease, enjoying the closed roads and sights of London. When we reached the lanes and hills of Surrey the roads were pretty congested as you would expect with 47,000 riders taking part. There were a few delays at that point but once we had passed this section, and after a few food stops, we really enjoyed the final 20 miles back into London on fast roads with lots of encouragement from the crowds.

“We were delighted to finish safely on the Mall with no punctures or injuries.”

Nick [pictured below] added: “Riding through London and passing the sights with the roads closed to traffic, never stopping for a light or junction was awesome!”

Meanwhile, Sarah thought the challenge was “worth every mile.”

UNDER THE ROOF CHARITY WORK

Russell Roof Tiles Charitable Hole in One AVONSIDE STAFF ENJOYED TAKING PART IN RUSSELL ROOF TILES’ ANNUAL CHARITY GOLF DAY ON THURSDAY 27TH JUNE, WHICH RESULTED IN THE BURTON-BASED ROOF TILE MANUFACTURER RAISING AN INCREDIBLE £5000 FOR LOCAL CHARITABLE CAUSES. — The event, which was held for the first time at Horsley Lodge Golf Club in Horsley, Derbyshire, saw over 80 people from 15 businesses across the UK, including our fellow roofing contractors Advanced Site Services and Steadfast Roofing Limited, and housebuilder Homes by Strata, come together to fundraise for local charities.

The players were split into 2 sides: Team England and Team Rest of the World, with Team England being crowned the champions, winning by 10.5 – 9.5 in a very close fought affair!

While Burton-based roofing contractor, Advanced Site Services took home £100 worth of Ticketmaster vouchers after winning the Highest Scoring pair with 69 points, Lancashire-based roofing company, Priority

Romilly’s Hornsea Hike for UK Sepsis Trust Our Avonside Driffield Administrator, Romilly Snowden is no stranger to fundraising and this time she is taking on the 13-mile Hornsea Hike on Sunday 6th October for a reason very close to her heart.

Sadly, Romilly’s Nan, Wendy [pictured] passed away in January 2019 from Sepsis. To honour her memory and raise awareness about the condition, Romilly will be generously raising money for the UK Sepsis Trust.

The Hike will treat Romilly to views of Hornsea Mere, the largest freshwater lake in Yorkshire. We hope you enjoy yourself Romilly!

AVONSIDE BOURNE SPONSOR BOURNE’S FIRST CICLE FESTIVAL In a move driven by Avonside Bourne’s Branch Director Richard Bostock, Avonside Bourne are among the local businesses proudly sponsoring Bourne’s first ever CICLE festival taking place in and around Bourne on 31st August- 1st September 2019.

The South Kesteven District Council organised event will include a 174km men’s race, a 114km women’s race, a women’s team time trial and a Sportive hosted by Bourne Wheelers, with 54-mile, 69-mile and 86-mile routes available. They’ll also be music from local bands and musicians, cycling and skateboarding demos, classic cycles and heritage vehicle displays, plus food and market stalls, so fun for all the family!

AVONSIDE’S BAKE OFF! Our Business Development Administrator, Lesley Taylor is also an avid fundraiser and volunteer. After raising an impressive £120 for Macmillan Cancer Support last year, she is currently organising a staff coffee morning on Friday 27th September in the kitchen at head office. For a minimum donation of £3 that will again go towards Macmillan Cancer Support, staff will be able to tuck into as many delicious cakes as they like!

Well done to our Avonside Edinburgh Contracts Manager Marc Bell for engaging with and helping his local community by organising for the branch to become the new shirt sponsors for Bo’ness United Community Football Club 2011. His son, Owen [pictured] models his new strip well we reckon!

Marc, who coaches youth team with training twice a week and matches in the Forth Valley league each Saturday, said: “It’s great to be involved with this brilliant grassroots club, helping well over 300 kids learn to play football in a fun safe environment.”

Marc is pictured with his team of smiling footballers along with one of the parents, John Darrien, who, as well as being an Avonside roofing operative, also has a son in the team.

Best Story Winner Revealed Danny Thorne, Branch Manager at Avonside Midlands Flat Roofing has scooped the Best Story award in June’s issue of the staff newsletter.
