B MILESTONE OF 5000 ICT CERTIFICATIONS REACHED! Year 11 student Corban Miller has the distinction of gaining the 5000th ICT industry certification since Avondale College opened its Certiport testing centre four years ago!

The milestone was reached amidst a packed lunchtime session in the Innovation Programme studio on Monday.

For Corban, this achievement - in HTML5 Application Development - represents the 20th certification he has earned so far. He began with the more basic Microsoft Office and ICT3 digital literacy qualifications last year and has steadily worked his way into achieving the very specialised Microsoft Technical Associate qualifications in areas such as server administration and networking security.

Along the way he has already gained all 21 of his NCEA Level 1 credits this year and says he is looking forward to achieving more certifications in the future, in areas such as cyber forensics and ethical hacking!

Congratulations to Corban - and all other students and staff who have achieved certifications over the last four years!

NATIVE TREE PLANTING TRIP Each year Year 12 and 13 Horticulture students go to Mataia near Helensville to reforest the farm land. The plants are grown here in Avondale College's Horticulture Shed and the students plant Manuka, cabbage trees, flaxes and other native trees on the rolling farm land.

Last week's expedition was on a hot and fine day, and the students and teachers planted the young trees on land next to streams and wet areas. When the trees and flaxes are established in two or three years they will protect the Kaipara Harbour from dirty water running off the land and polluting the harbour. They will provide food for native birds and insects as well and a place for future generations to enjoy the native forest. It will be protected by a QEII covenant so it can never be cut down.

TOP EXAM RESULTS FOR DANCERS Every year we have the privilege of starting our preparation for the school Show by going to Peter Snell Youth Village in Whangaparaoa for three intensive days of singing, acting and choreography. This year's camp had an amazing energy. The cast is already a close knit family with clear respect and atawhai for each other.

We look forward to rehearsals in the holidays to meet the troupe and continue this preparation. Dates and times for these holiday rehearsals will be coming home this week. 'Catch Me if You Can' will run from 17 to 22 September.

Yesterday 25 of our Dance Academy students undertook New Zealand Academy of Modern Dance examinations in contemporary dance techniques. The examiner, Miss Nicola Madden, was flown up from Christchurch for the day and was thoroughly impressed by the "passion and respect for dance" that our students demonstrated.

Congratulations to all the students on their qualifications - their results are outstanding!

Special mentions go to the following students: - Ella Nipper and Izabella Hosie (Year 10) were awarded a Distinction (95-100%) in Level 3 Contemporary.

- Isabella Baird (Year 9) was awarded a Distinction (95-100%) in Level 2 Contemporary.

- Sophie Rose, Christen Schonberger, Maya Pinto, and Jessica Hope were awarded High Honours qualifications (90-95%) in Level 3 Contemporary.

CONGRATULATIONS! Congratulations to Year 12 basketballer Jaga Mete-Smith who has made the longlist for the New Zealand Under 19 Men's Selection Camp! Jaga is the only Waitakere West player to make it onto this list.

SPORTS REPORT Monday 25th June – Sunday 1st July

The Year 10 B Boys lost 1-0 to Green Bay.

BADMINTON

The Year 9 Boys lost 7-2 against Auckland Grammar A1. The boys again had a difficult match to face, but they played brilliantly. We had a number of good shots at goal but their defence thwarted our efforts.

We had several good saves by the only keeper of the side. The first half score was 4-1 to Auckland Grammar.

The Senior Girls A won 5-1 against Kings 2, whilst the Senior B Girls defeated Baradene, 6-0.

The Senior A Boys won 6-0 against St Peters 2, while the Senior B Boys drew 3-3 but lost on points against Mt Albert B1, 109-110.

BASKETBALL

The Premier Girls fought well throughout but lost both their games: 44-51 to Mt Roskill Grammar and 88-58 to Birkenhead College.

They produced some outstanding and skilful play even in the second half but went down 7-2 to Auckland Grammar at the end.

The Junior Premier Girls’ Basketball team had another great win: securing a 56-8 victory against Diocesan School for Girls. With only three games left of the season, the girls are endeavouring to play their best.

The Premier Boys lost 114-63 against a very strong Rosmini College side.

On Wednesday 27th of June, the U19 boys played Liston with Coach Doe in attendance for the first game of the season. He told the boys to go and show him their best, and although it was a messy game, in the end the boys took the win with a whopping 68-18 final score.

Having Coach Doe in attendance gave the boys the motivation to go out and get the big win, which was great to see.

The U17A Boys Basketball team had a good win against Waitakere College. A late run was not enough from Waitakere and Avondale won 51-46. Strong defence was the highlight of the evening and the win has kept the team in the hunt for the playoffs.

The Junior A Boys defeated Kelston Boys B, 48-23 but the Junior B Boys side fell short against Rutherford Kazien, 28-7.

FOOTBALL

The 1st XI Girls Football lost 2-1 in a close match against St Cuthberts.

The 2nd XI Girls lost by default.

The 1st XI Boys drew against defending champions Sacred Heart 1-1, while the 2nd XI Boys fell, 8-2, against Sacred Heart 2nd XI. The Year 10 A Boys lost 2-4 to Westlake Boys High School. Westlake had absolutely trounced our boys earlier in the season when they first met, so this represents progress. The team is improving rapidly and beginning to score goals and create opportunities.

HOCKEY

The conditions could not have been better for the 1st XI Hockey Boys on Wednesday 27th June - no rain - no wind - a cool and crisp winter's twilight home game against Kristin College. Many opportunities went begging as we were camped in the attacking 25 most of the first half. A great defensive effort by Kristin's keeper and back team left us scoreless in the first 30 and down one goal early on. End-to-end hockey saw our player of the day Roel Nijhuis put in hard yards, both in shutting down the opposition and turning on attack with similar effort across the whole team. Some deft touches by our lads gave us a well-deserved and hard fought 4-3 win.

The 1st XI Girls Hockey defeated Howick College by a single goal. Final score: Avondale 1-0 Howick.

The U15 Boys lost 6-0 against Kings.

The U15 Girls drew in a close match against Diocesan U15B.

LACROSSE

The Senior A Girls lost 14-6 against Mt Albert A. The Senior B Girls lost 13-4 against Botany Downs.

RUGBY LEAGUE

1st XIII Boys lost 20-8 against Mt Albert Grammar.

RUGBY UNION

Saturday saw a disappointing 34-12 loss for the 1st XV Boys against Maclean’s College. The game started well but superior pace put Maclean’s ahead 22-0 at half time. A comeback loomed for us with two quick tries in the second half but Maclean’s also managed to score twice, leaving us well behind on the scoreboard.

The 2nd XV Boys played Lynfield College over the weekend under a nice sunny sky. Lynfield scored early in the first half after building pressure but Avondale managed to hit back with a try late in the first half through Inoke Kupu. A missed conversion saw us go into the half time break with a 7-5 lead to Lynfield. The second half was an up and down situation with a few errors costing the boys as Lynfield capitalised on them with a couple penalties and a try. The boys managed to fight back and score in the last play of the game, but the final score was 12-25 to Lynfield.

The Restricted Boys lost 15-5 against Glendowie.

The Under 15 Boys team hosted a top-of-the-table clash with the previously undefeated Otahuhu College. Otahuhu dominated possession in the first half, but could not break through the tough Avondale defence. The home team took a 3-0 lead into halftime via a penalty goal from Isimase Tavae. An early second half try to the visitor’s gave them a slim 3-5 lead. Avondale stepped up their efforts and took control of the game with strong tackling and hard running.

Two further penalty goals from Isimase led to a well-earned 9-5 win.

The team’s commitment to defence was the key to the victory, with particularly strong efforts from captain Hayden Warrington, prop Steve Setefano and number 8 Fabian Malungahu. The win puts the team in first-equal place going into the holiday break and they’re on track for a home playoff match next term.

The Senior Girls rugby side won by default.

SQUASH

The boys Premier team had a pulsating 7-7 draw with Sacred Heart (actually 130 points apiece each too). Great wins for Kavel Mudaliar (30) and Vatsal Gajjar (3-1). Owen McGrath performed admirably in his first premier match and Luke Gray was unfortunate to lose his close contest.

The Senior A had a respectable 10-5 loss against King's B, with a great win for Plaeton Xavier 3-1.

The Senior Girls A won 4-0 against St Cuthbert’s B and Epsom Girls.

UNDERWATER HOCKEY

The Junior Open defeated Mahurangi B, 4-1.

TAUREWA CAMP 2018 Year 10, Year 12 and Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp.

We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure.

Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
