B AVONDALE TEAM CHOSEN FOR MICROSOFT WORLD CHAMPS Six Avondale College students are heading to Microsoft’s equivalent of the Olympics after winning the national finals of the Microsoft Office Specialist Championships last week. This year 120 schools from around New Zealand took part in the national competition, which tests students’ skills in six Microsoft Office applications. For the third consecutive year, all 20 places in the national finals were filled by students from Avondale College. The six champions - Ved Kulkarni (14), Christopher Tang (15), Tristan Mona (15), Sebastian Thomas (17), Jack Hui (17) and Alex James (17) rose to the top of an incredibly competitive field, with as little as 0.04 of a second separating some of the final place winners. They will now go on to represent New Zealand – and Avondale College – at the MOS World Champs in the USA in July. More than half a million competitors from around the world are also currently vying for a place at the world finals in which students aged 13 to 22 will be tested on their aptitude and knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint (2013 or 2016). The competition is project based, with points being awarded for accuracy and credit given for fast completion. In recent years Avondale College has made a name for itself in this international competition, having won twelve top-ten places (including three podium finishes) in the four years that they have entered. To put this into context, no Australian student has ever placed in a world final. The Microsoft Office Specialist World Championships will be held in Orlando, Florida from 29 July to 1 August.

ADOBE SPECIALIST WORKSHOPS Selected ICT classes had the special opportunity to engage with the Australianbased Adobe Education Specialist team today in a creative workshop session. Students undertook a mini Adobe Have a Voice project where they had to work with a partner or in groups to build a two minute video promoting a concept, idea or issue that was important to them. Students built the videos using either Spark Video, Premiere Clip or Premiere Pro and had to incorporate a short animation made with Adobe Character Animator. In the afternoon, staff from Avondale College and other secondary schools had the opportunity to take part in a professional development session in using Adobe in the classroom.

There is a report evening planned for parents to meet with the teachers to discuss the report. This will be held in the Atrium on Tuesday 3 July between 4:30pm and 7:30pm. From 2 July, appointments will be filled in manually with the appointment form posted out with the report. HELP FINDLAY GET TO DENMARK!
SCHOLARSHIP DANCE AUDITIONS Auditions for Scholarship Dance performers were held in the B13 studio last week. The five Year 13 choreographers are working to conceptualise, refine, and synthesise their ideas in full-scale dance works of their own making for their Scholarship submissions in October. Ninety-five students turned out over three days to audition as the dancers for the five pieces. They jumped, leaped and rolled their way through a fantastic process - showcasing their extensive talent and performance ability for each other. A highlight of the process was the improvisation session run on the Friday audition! We now look forward to the start of the rehearsal process this week. Look out for the completed works - they will be featured in the 2018 Dance Showcase production in October!

CIE EXAMS MANAGER
On Tuesday 12th June, three Year 12 Science classes went on a field trip around Auckland's volcanic field. The rain did not dampen spirits and the students were enthusiastic all day. The goal was to investigate the geological processes that have resulted in the formation of over 50 volcanoes in the Auckland region. Accompanied by experienced staff, students visited the explosion crater at the Auckland Domain and climbed to top of Mangere Mountain's large scoria cone.
An organised and committed person is required for a fixed-term position as Exam Manager for Cambridge Assessment International Education exams at Avondale College. Applicants must be available during the exam period which runs from 9 October to 16 November. There will also be a requirement to attend some training prior to this time. DAVID PERFORMS LEAD ROLE IN 'CATS' Year 12 Avondale College student David Tuitama will be performing the lead role of Old Deuteronomy next week as part of the National Youth Theatre Company's production of Cats. He is one of seven Avondale College students who are involved in the production, which is taking place at the ASB Theatre from 21-24 June. "It has been an intense experience," says David. "I was really happy to just be part of the ensemble cast but ended up being one of the leads!" David has had a busy year so far, taking the title role of Othello in the College's 15 minute production that won the West Auckland heats of the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare competition and performed at the National Shakespeare competition in Wellington over Queen's Birthday. Following on from this event, he has just learned he has been chosen to take part in the National Shakespeare Schools Production (NSSP), a week-long intensive course with workshops, rehearsals and performances in the September/October holidays. This is a significant achievement as just 48 students from the hundreds involved are selected for this course. In addition, the talented actor has also been cast as one of the lead roles in Avondale College's upcoming production of Catch Me If You Can. David will be performing as Old Deuteronomy on Friday 22 June at 7pm and Saturday 23 June at 1.30pm. Tickets are available through Ticketek.
TAHI MAHI PROGRAMME An ex- Avondale College student, Arihia Joseph, popped in to chat with the current Avondale Mahi Tahi Mentoring Group about her tertiary journey last Tuesday. It was really good for her to share with the students about how she used what she learnt from the Mahi Tahi Programme last year, and talk them through her career decision-making process, through to now studying towards a degree she absolutely loves. The mentoring group for Year 12/13 Maori students finishes this week and has been running after school in the Whare since 8 May. It is organised by the School Careers Department and run with AUT University. This year 15 students have attended the successful mentoring programme.

BUS CHANGES We have been advised by Auckland Transport that that some bus services will be changing from 8 July. Message from Auckland Transport: For most people this just means improved bus services. However, some suburbs will have significant changes and users will need to re-plan their journeys. This might include using a new bus stop, a familiar route changing, or needing to transfer to complete a journey. With most bus services set to change, it is vital that the community know what is happening. We are rolling out a comprehensive information campaign across the Central Suburbs, but we also need the help of community groups and organisations like yours to help spread the word. What the community needs to know: • On Sunday 8 July, most current bus services in the Central Suburbs will change as part of the New Network. • Auckland Transport school buses will change at the start of Term 3, 2018. • If you catch buses in these areas, you will need to re-plan your journey on the new services before they start on 8 July. • To do this, visit AT.govt.nz/journeyplanner after 15 June (when the new services are available in the system) enter your journey details, and use a date that is FROM 8 July. This will tell you what bus you need to catch, where to catch it, and what time it departs. BASKETBALL
The Junior Premier Girls team played a tough Onehunga College team on Thursday 7 June, ending the night on a 34-18 loss. The girls played with tenacity and endeavour until the very end. They are developing their skill level every week and are excited about the next fixture against Diocesan Girls next week. The U17 Boys had a close match against Auckland Grammar on Thursday 7 June, falling short by only three points. The final score was 55-58 to Auckland Grammar. Our U19 Boys team had an outstanding game against St Paul’s College last week on Wednesday 6 June. Coach Matt Albert-Wihone had encouraged the team to show tenacity, and this is exactly what they did. In round 4 of the season the team finally won against our main rivals from last year, St Paul’s. Caleb Finau was strong on both ends of the court: both in scoring and in helping to shut down their offensive momentum at key points. A special mention also goes to forward Jarome Tinielu who proved too strong in the post, and to first year player Kyle Makaea Glassie, who continues to grow in confidence with every minute he plays, not letting bigger opponents outplay him, and showing versatility around the perimeter. This was an awesome game! Our Junior A Boys lost 31-25 against Mt Roskill Grammar. Our Junior B Boys defeated Lynfield College B 38-24. Our Premier Boys team had a tough loss against Rangitoto College 90-68 on Friday 8 June. The Senior A Girls team competed in a very tight match on Friday 8 June against Pakuranga College who were above us on the table. Our girls got off to a great start, holding together a strong 2-3 zone defence which made it tough for the opposition to score. At half time we were up by 12 points. However, Pakuranga fought their way back into the game and midway through the fourth quarter the scores were even. A nice three pointer by Izabella Rasmussen-Lotam-Dover and a clutch right hand hook by Tikenati Raion brought the momentum back into our court as we took the lead back out to seven, ending the game 5043. This was an outstanding performance by all our girls.
FOOTBALL
The 1st XI Boys team drew against St Peters College 1-1 on Friday 8th June. The 2nd XI Boys team had a tough game against St Peters College 2nd XI team, losing 6-1. The Year 10 A Boys team played against Howick College A on Saturday 9 June. Although we lost 1-0, it was a very exciting game. We showed a lot of dominance throughout the game, having at least five great opportunities to score. The opposition rarely stretched our defence, but earned a penalty early in the second half. The team’s coaches were very proud of the boys and their efforts both on and off the field. They are excited for their upcoming games and are confident that great things are to come. The Year 10 B Boys team lost their first game of the season to a strong Liston College side. The score was 1-3. Nico Cribb got a stunning goal to get us on the scoreboard but it wasn't enough. We learned from this game that we can't rest on our laurels and we must go out fighting from the start of the game. The Year 9 Boys team had a close match against Rangitoto College A, but lost 3-2. The boys started very well, scoring early in the first half. From there the game was even, with both teams creating chances. The first half finished 1-0 to Avondale with the team showing positivity and playing well. Avondale scored again half way through the second half, after which Rangitoto lifted their intensity. A lack of focus from Avondale meant we conceded three goals. The boys played really well but a lack of concentration saw their lead cut down quickly. We look forward to a better effort in the coming games. The Junior Premier Girls won against Baradene College 10-0.
HOCKEY
The 1st XI Boys team had a close game against Pakuranga College on Wednesday 6 June. The game was a good contest against different styles. Our boys kept their composure, despite the physical nature of Pakuranga. We dominated, but were unable to put a finishing touch to a lot of good attacks. A good goal by Pakuranga was the fine line difference. This was a tough loss! The 1st XI Girls team lost to Mt Albert Grammar, 6-2.
The 1st XI Girls team played Massey High School on Wednesday 6th June and came away with a well-deserved 2-1 win. The whole squad played with fighting spirit, dominating the possession for the entire 60 minutes. We saw some great football moments from strikers Che Stockenstroom and Maclani Michael who worked hard to secure a goal each. Player of the Day was Alix Mills who stepped up into a defensive position after an early injury and showed all kinds of tenacity. Special mention should also be made of Tayla Prince-Saxton (Year 11) who remained strong in the centre-midfield, putting her body on the line as she held off Massey players. The 2nd XI Girls team played two games last week. On Wednesday 6 June they played Green Bay High School and were defeated 8-0. On Thursday 7 June they played their second game against Kelston Girls College at home. Avondale College were down 3-0 at half time, but showed great endeavour in the second half. Kalee O’Sullivan sprinted with the ball from halfway to score a goal for Avondale. Avondale managed to keep Kelston scoreless for the second half, with the final score being 3-1 to Kelston. The girls remained motivated as they played back-to-back games this week. Player of the Day Lucy Constantine-Powles (Captain) played extremely well in defence to stop the aggressive Kelston strikers from getting to Avondale’s goal.

The Premier Boys Squash team had a nice win against Pukekohe High School on Wednesday 6 June. Kavel Mudaliar, Vatsal Gajjar and Luke Gray all had impressive 3-0 wins, ending the day 9-3 to Avondale College. We look forward to a similar performance in the upcoming AKSS Squash team championships which are scheduled for next week. The Senior A Boys team were unfortunately beaten 10-6 by Maclean’s College. Owen McGrath and Plaeton Xavier went to five games in each match, but just fell short of a win. Better luck next week!

SQUASH
On Saturday 2 June, the 1st XV Boys won 29-10 against Papatoetoe High School. With timely forward dominance and good defence on our try line we were able to score early points. Despite having few reserves and many players out of position we managed to retain possession and advance down the field regularly. A good kick return meant we were able to pin the opposition in their half for much of the game. Good discipline also helped in securing a positive score board for the first time this season. Amongst a great team effort, Pita Fepuleai had a standout game as our forward Player of the Day, with solid scrummaging and hard tight five play. Also having Jayden Oscroft move from halfback to second five injected urgency in the attack and defence, which saw him score his maiden try for the 1st XV. The 2nd XV Boys team went down to Mt Roskill Grammar 11-0. After some tough defence Mt Roskill sneaked in a try in the corner with an overlap out wide. They converted two late penalties to seal the match. The boys are improving and have begun developing their structure and set pieces nicely. We look forward to some good wins in the future. The Restricted Boys team lost to Westlake Boys High School 42-0 on Saturday 9 June. The boys played well to begin with, but struggled to gain territory in the first half. Down 15-0 at half time, the second half started a lot better with our boys attacking on the opposition’s 22m for ten minutes but they just weren’t able to get across the line. This was a big improvement from the boys and we are feeling positive about going into the next couple of games. The U15 Boys’ team won 25-5 against Wesley College on Saturday 9 June. The first half started well and it was a tight game with neither side able to break the other’s defensive line. Avondale were able to score first after 20 minutes with a penalty to Isimase Tavae. Another penalty shortly after gave the home side a 6-0 lead. The visitors were able to cross the line just before half time to score the first try of the game. The second half started as the first half had, with both sides putting together some great plays. Avondale were able to strike first and Isireli Senibulu scored a nice try which was also converted from the sideline. They were able to strike again shortly after with a try to Nathaniel Roma which was also converted. The visitors were finding it difficult to break the Avondale defence and were down to 14 players due to a yellow card. The home team was able to cross the line in the corner with a well-constructed try to Ola Hoeft to lock in a 25-5 victory over the Wesley team. Our Senior Girls 10 aside team won by default against Mangere College.

TAUREWA CAMP 2018 Year 10, Year 12 and Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
