B MICROSOFT OFFICE SPECIALIST NATIONAL FINALISTS For the third year running, Avondale College has made a clean sweep in qualifying for the National Microsoft Office Specialist Championships. From 120 participating schools, just 20 national finalists have been selected - and all 20 are from Avondale College! The competition was fierce - with 310 students gaining perfect scores (1000/1000) in their qualifying rounds; 308 were from Avondale College! Congratulations to all our finalists, and we wish them all the best in the finals which will be held at Avondale College on Thursday 7 June. (See page 4 for finalists' names).

HEART AWARDS
Year 12 recipients of the Avondale College Gold Heart Award In recent weeks some Avondale College students have been presented with our inaugural Heart Award. This certificate recognises the student’s contribution to the College and the embodiment of our HEART values of honesty, endeavour, atawhai, respect and tenacity. Factors such as attendance, effort and attitude, involvement in co-curricular activities and service to the school are all considered, with points being allocated in each category to determine whether the standard of Gold, Silver or Bronze has been reached. Students who were awarded Gold Awards were presented with these at their year level assemblies, with Silver and Bronze awards being distributed by their home room teacher. Congratulations to all who have received a Heart Award – this is a fantastic achievement and well deserved.

CIE EXAMS MANAGER
YOUDANCE Our Senior Contemporary Dance Group shone on stage at the YouDance festival on Wednesday evening. For the second year running, the Year 13 Avondale College class was invited to close the festival, which is great recognition of their technique and performance ability. All three producers commented separately on Avondale College's professionalism, focus and theatre etiquette.
An organised and committed person is required for a fixed-term position as Exam Manager for Cambridge Assessment International Education exams at Avondale College. Applicants must be available during the exam period which runs from 9 October to 16 November. There will also be a requirement to attend some training prior to this time. 2018 NCEA FEES SENIOR MUSIC TOUR The Year 13 Music class traveled to the Bay of Plenty last week for a three day performance tour. They managed to ignore the frosty cold in the Waihi area to put on an energetic and engaging show at four schools: Waihi Beach School, Whangamata Area School, Netherton School and Katikati Primary School. The tour provided invaluable touring and performance opportunities for the students involved, who are all working towards two achievement standards; one for setting up sound equipment and the other for performing in a group.

You can do this in several ways: a) Send a notification via Family Connection (preferred) • Log in to Family Connection • Select ‘Available E-Forms’ (at top left) • Click on Absence Notification • Fill out the details, save and submit. You will receive a confirmatory email once the notification is approved. This replaces the need to supply an absence note to the home room teacher. b) Email the Attendance Officer: absences@avcol.school.nz. Please include your child’s full name, home room class and the reason for the absence. c) Phone the Absence Line: (09) 820 1071 Students are required to provide a written note for all absences, even after the school has been notified by phone. This note must be brought on the first day of attendance after the absence and given to the home room teacher. Parents will receive a text from the school if their child is absent from home room without explanation.

NATIONAL SHAKESPEARE COMPETITION The 27th Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand University of Otago Sheilah Winn Festival took place in Wellington over the weekend, with 49 regional finalists participating from all over New Zealand. Representing Avondale College at the nationwide festival were Alana Rae, Saffron Stanley, Poppy Madden, David Tuitama, Monty Mathieson and Shivam Desai whose 15 minute piece from Othello (directed by alumna Sammie Rae) had won the West Auckland heats. The students (and staff members Mrs Norton and Mr N Smit) also attended workshops presented by national and international industry professionals. They also enjoyed watching the performances from other schools and networking with other young performers. The Avondale group was delighted to receive the award for the Best Understanding of Sound and Silence for their performance.
AVONDALE BRIDGE BUILDING COMPETITION 2018 Avondale College's budding junior engineers had the chance to put theory into practice at the College's annual Bridge Building Competition on Friday. This year a record number of students signed up for the challenge to build a weight-bearing bridge using just skewers, popsicle sticks, glue and string. Twenty-five teams of 75 juniors took part in the competition, which was held in the PAC. Offering invaluable guidance and advice were five former Avondale College students who are now studying engineering at tertiary level. They gave a presentation on engineering and shared their best tips for bridge design. After a full day of planning and execution, the bridges were left to dry over the weekend. They will now be tested to breaking point on Wednesday at lunchtime, with the top three engineering teams going on to compete at the Aurecon Bridge Building Competition later in the year.

BUS CHANGES We have been advised by Auckland Transport that that some bus services will be changing from 8 July. Message from Auckland Transport: For most people this just means improved bus services. However, some suburbs will have significant changes and users will need to replan their journeys. This might include using a new bus stop, a familiar route changing, or needing to transfer to complete a journey. With most bus services set to change, it is vital that the community know what is happening. We are rolling out a comprehensive information campaign across the Central Suburbs, but we also need the help of community groups and organisations like yours to help spread the word. What the community needs to know: • On Sunday 8 July, most current bus services in the Central Suburbs will change as part of the New Network. • Auckland Transport school buses will change at the start of Term 3, 2018. • If you catch buses in these areas, you will need to re-plan your journey on the new services before they start on 8 July. • To do this, visit AT.govt.nz/journeyplanner after 15 June (when the new services are available in the system) enter your journey details, and use a date that is FROM 8 July. This will tell you what bus you need to catch, where to catch it, and what time it departs. Alternatively, refer to the Central New Network map – available at AT.govt.nz/ newnetworkcentral or view the new timetables from early June at AT.govt.nz/timetables

BADMINTON
The Senior A Boys played Baradene Lions, winning 6-0. The Senior B Girls defeated Lynfield B Girls, 4-2.
BASKETBALL
In the third game of the season the U19 Boys faced off against a Mt Roskill side. Unfortunately, the saying "third time lucky" doesn’t always apply, and they proved too strong for us to battle with. In the beginning it was neck and neck, but small mistakes on defence gave the opposition the advantage. Despite the scoreboard, the boys didn’t hold back and kept trying until the last second, making their coach proud. Mohammed Joshua continues to show his natural talent on the court, along with Kyle Makaea Glassie who grows in confidence with every game. Final score: Mt Roskill 63-21 Avondale.
The 1st XI Girls played two games in the space of two days during the week. First up was a difficult game against Epsom Girls, which Avondale lost 2-0. On Thursday 31st May the girls then faced Mt Albert Grammar, unfortunately losing 13-1. The Junior Premier Girls lost 13-0 against Epsom Girls. It was a tough game for the girls, but they kept their heads up and kept trying. They are having a challenging year so far but hopefully we can look to the future games with some positivity.
The U17 Boys played two games during the week. A close encounter against Massey High saw the boys fall short 60-52. The second game was against Mt Albert Grammar, where after a slow first quarter, the boys upped the pace and pulled away to a comfortable 40-22 win. Keanu Eteru and Preston Karatau ran the offence at speed whilst Sam Scott was impressive on defence. It was a good bounce back from the close loss to Massey earlier in the week and the Avondale team remains in close company at the top of the table. The Junior A Boys won comprehensively against Mt Albert 2, winning 44-17. The Junior B Boys defeated Western Springs, 31-18. The Junior Premier Girls lost by one point in overtime, 41-40, against Massey Junior A.
FOOTBALL
On Wednesday 30 May the Avondale College 1st XI Football Boys side travelled to Albany Senior High School for the first round of the Knockout Cup. Ironically, this was the same opposition who knocked Avondale out of the Cup last season! The team went into the game full of confidence off the back of a great win against AGS the previous week, and started like a steam train against their lower league opponents. Two thunderbolt strikes from Callum McGregor and a header from Aidan Carey had the visitors 3–0 up inside eight minutes, and a cricket score was on the cards! However, a change in shape from the hosts, coupled with some complacency from Avondale, saw the match even itself out for the remainder of the half. Right on half-time Albany were awarded a somewhat soft penalty which was calmly dispatched, bringing the half-time score to 3–1. Within ten minutes of the restart, two mistakes in the defensive line were pounced on by the hosts, and the score was even at 3-3! Avondale re-grouped, and the midfield trio of Aidan Carey, Colin Holthuis-Spann and Ben Andrell started to take control again. The hosts were tiring and holding on for dear life, and with a matter of seconds left on the clock, Ben Andrell popped up on the edge of the box to calmly score into the top corner and send Avondale through to the second round draw. Full credit must go to ASHS and their players who made the game so competitive, and they probably deserved a little more from the game than they got!

1st XIII lost 18-12 in a close game on Wednesday 30th May against Southern Cross.
RUGBY UNION
On Saturday 2nd June, the 1st XV Boys lost 22-11 against Pakuranga College. The Senior Girls played One Tree Hill on Monday 28th May. It was a tough game where Avondale College was defending most of the game but was able to score four tries with no conversions. Kiera-Marie Sekene scored two tries. One Tree Hill won by three points in the end, 23-20.
SQUASH
The Premier Boys drew 7-7 in a competitive match. This was a great win for Vatsal Gajjar against a higher-graded opponent, and a comfortable win for Luke Gray. Brandon Adonis and Kavel Mudaliar both battled admirably in defeat. The Senior Boys A lost 12-2 against Orewa College. The Senior Girls A defeated Mt Albert A, 3-1. The Senior Girls B lost to Mt Albert B, 3-1.

TAUREWA CAMP 2018 Year 10, Year 12 and Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
