Our Year 9 Innovation students are proving their digital literacy is truly at a global standard. All students are currently working towards gaining IC3 Digital Literacy Certification - a qualification usually gained by professionals in the ICT industry. These Year 9 Innovation students sat the IC3 Spark exam last term and now are working towards their Computer Fundamentals exam next week. Avondale College believes IC3 includes concepts and skills that apply to almost any career pathway. It's the ideal solution for any adult student or job seeker looking to validate their digital skills. Simply put, the IC3 Digital Literacy programme is the best way to ensure that University students and employees are prepared to succeed in a technologybased world. That these Year 9 students are achieving it is a testimony to their desire to succeed and hard work of the teaching staff.

CONFERENCE INSPIRES ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERS The two student leaders of Avondale College's Environmental Council, Dylan Chand and Emily Smith, attended a three day Young Leaders Sustainability Programme in Manukau during the holidays. There they learned about the Manukau Harbour and the importance of its ecosystem. They did fun activities like snorkelling at Goat Island and Mathesons Bay, and visited the wastewater management system nearby to help develop their understanding of the Harbour. At the end of the programme they spoke to members of the Manukau Harbour forum, in groups, about what projects they could undertake to improve the harbour's health. Inspired by the programme, Emily and Dylan, along with all the members of the Environmental Council have enjoyed putting together a range of activities for Avondale College students to participate in as part of Seaweek this week. The activities are aimed at raising awareness about how we treat the sea, and considering ways to show greater respect towards this environment.
FAREWELL Avondale College farewelled Director of Sport, Miss Abigail Whiu, this week. We wish her all the best as she takes up her new role of Regional Sports Director at Sport Waikato.
SHOW AUDITIONS
TAI CHI Students had the opportunity to watch Mr Khoo demonstrate the art of Tai Chi at lunchtime on Thursday, and then join in a session for themselves. The Tai Chi club is open to all interested students (and staff ) - see the Daily Notices for more information.
The lead up to the Avondale College Show for 2018 - Catch Me if You Can - got underway on Friday, with around 200 students auditioning for a part in the show. The show is based on the true story of a con man who talks his way into a variety of professions, and of the FBI agent who tries to catch him... The cast list will be announced soon and then rehearsals will begin in earnest in preparation for the performances in September. need help with homework? or a quiet place to study?

DAITO BUNKA DAI-ICHI HIGH SCHOOL - AVONDALE COLLEGE EXCHANGE 2018 On July 28 we will be welcoming students and staff from our sister school Daito Bunka High School in Tokyo. This is a reciprocal visit that has been taking place every second year for the last 29 years. Over that time a warm and close relationship has developed between the two schools.
HOMES NEEDED
This year 29 students will be spending two weeks at Avondale College. A very special part of the exchange is the homestay programme and to this end we are seeking families who would be willing to voluntarily provide a bed and food for this period for our guests. You do not have to be able to speak any Japanese fortunately the students have sufficient English to get by. The students will be with you for a total of ten nights (Saturday 28 July to Thursday 9 August). Students will stay at a hotel near the airport on 9 August for an early departure on 10 August. On Wednesday 1 August they will travel to Rotorua and return on 2 August. If you would be able to provide a homestay for one or more students we would love to hear from you. CAN I GET HELP TO PAY? If you are a Domestic Student you can apply for Financial Assistance if your family cannot afford to pay your fees. SPORTS REPORT Monday 30th April – Sunday 6th May
HOCKEY
The 1st XI Hockey Girls started off their season against St Cuthbert’s College. The girls went down 5-0 but are in high spirits heading into their next match. 1st XI Hockey Boys won 1–0 against Glendowie. The first hit out of the season saw a solid beginning by our boys, with a blazing start ensuring we got into a scoring position within the first 30 seconds of the starting whistle. After a penalty corner (PC) against us at six minutes we turned around one for us five minutes later. We then gained the upper hand with a team press turning over possession and on attack up the field, with Alex Stenberg finishing off an amazing shot 14 minutes into the game. We narrowly missed scoring off some of our other attacking PCs and nearly had a goal by Zach Giffin-Munn in the last minute; we held our press and defence to come out with a season-opening win. Well done, team! Player of the Day was William Mongkhonwiratchai for great defensive work, even as a winger.
FOOTBALL
The 1st XI Football Girls had a tough first game, going up against last season’s winner and premier tournament winner, and the girls played fantastic football. The first half started well with most of the play around the halfway mark due to strong defence on both sides, but a few run away balls saw St Kentigern get two up on Avondale in quick succession and then a third before the end of the first half. After a very inspiring team talk led by Avondale captain Isabella Barnes, the whole team stepped up to put pressure on St Kentigern as soon as the whistle was blown. It was a huge feat for our girls to have no goals conceded in the second half! Special mention to our Year 11 girls - Trinity May, Tayla Prince-Saxton and Ashtika Singh - who have stepped up to the challenge of playing in the premier grade for the first time brillantly. Tayla and Trinity showed consistent tenacity and determination on the pitch and Ashtika held her own as our keeper, with many great saves. Player of the Day was Brooke Whiu who put her body on the line in defence through countless headers, high balls and strong tackles. To only go down 3-0 to this team is absolutely amazing; we can’t wait to see how far the Avcol girls can go during the season! A big task faced the 1st XI Football Boys in their first game of the season up against the defending Premier League Champions, Sacred Heart. Newly promoted into the Premier League, the 1st XI Boys played well against the best team in the competition but came out second best, losing 4-0. The 2nd XI Boys lost 8-0 against Sacred Heart 2nd XI. Year 10A Boys lost their first match of the season against Westlake Boys, 4-0.

The senior and junior netball seasons are underway with all Avondale College Netball teams playing their first games last week. Avondale College Senior Netball Results: Premier 1 defeated Green Bay Premier 1. Final score: 44-24, Player of the Day: Elleazyr Maiuu Premier 2 defeated ACG Sunderland A. Final score: 34-24, Player of the Day: Shyah Hale Senior Black defeated Hoani Waititi Kahu. Final score: 11-7, Player of the Day: Bethany Park Senior Gold lost to St Dominic Yellow. Player of the Day: Celine Faugstad Senior Silver lost 4-10 against Rutherford B. Player of the Day: Nqobile Ngwenya Senior White defeated Green Bay C. Player of the Day: Usoalii Ofati (GD, GK, C) for her versatility. She was happy and willing to play in both attack and defense. Year 10 Silver lost 7-30 to Henderson Yellow. Player of the Day: Mele Anae (GK, GA, GS) for her versatility. She was very adaptable and supported her team in both ends of the court. Year 10 Bronze lost 5-38 against St Dominics C. Player of the Day: The whole team for their collective efforts. Year 9 Black lost 24-20 against Waitakere A. Player of the Day: Luisa Finau Year 9 Gold defeated Green Bay B. Final score: 33-8. Player of the Day: Melina Tafili for her solid defense and many brilliant intercepts. Year 9 Silver defeated Massey Yellow. Final score: 24-3. RUGBY
1st XV Rugby Boys played Tamaki College in their first match of the season. This was a tough match as Tamaki College are one of the top performing rugby schools in the country. Our boys gave a strong performance but lost in the end, 22-3.
SWIMMING
Avondale College was represented by five students at the recent National Age Group Championships which were held from Tuesday 17 April – Saturday 21 April at the Sir Owen Glenn National Aquatic Centre, Auckland. Alex Dunkley, Vienna Samuels, Sam Charles, Lucy Makaea and Ikko Shibuya all competed in their various age groups in different events. In the end, Alex, Lucy and Ikko all qualified for the finals in their respective age groups and Ikko came away winning a gold and four silvers in the 16 year age group. Congratulations to all students who represented Avondale on their awesome achievement!

TAUREWA CAMP 2018 Year 10, Year 12 and Year 13 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa Camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
