Avondale College is holding our annual Open Evening from 4.00pm to 7.00pm on Wednesday 2 August. This is when parents of prospective students are invited to view our school. Timetabled classes will finish at 12.30pm, to allow preparations for the evening. At this time your child will be released from class to go home. Buses have been rescheduled and will run at this earlier time. After school detentions will run from 12.35pm. There will be supervision available in the library for students whose parents are unable to accommodate this earlier finishing time. There are a number of students involved in Open Evening activities and their support of Avondale College is much appreciated.

ASPIRE FESTIVAL AVONDALE COLLEGE MUSICIANS WIN AWARDS AT INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL Avondale College has just returned from their first international music tour to the inaugural Aspire International Youth Music Festival in Brisbane, Australia, which was a huge success. The group are seasoned in national music tours but this was their first overseas expedition to showcase their musical abilities. And their efforts were well rewarded – taking home not one, but two trophies! They placed 1st with the Symphony Orchestra and 2nd with the Big Band, and the String Ensemble was presented with a Highly Commended award. Perhaps even more impressive than their results was their stage presence, which was praised by the adjudicators for being hugely enthusiastic and passionate – our students' love of music shone through their smiles.
BIANCA COMPETING AT THE INTERNATIONAL BIOLOGY OLYMPIAD Year 13 student Bianca Craill has joined 260 students from 67 countries at the International Biology Olympiad being held in Warwick in the UK, this week. She has a full programme of practical and theoretical testing ahead - we wish her and her fellow New Zealand teammates all the best!

Over the course of the Aspire festival, all three of Avondale College’s ensembles participated in an adjudicated performance, were given tailored feedback in a workshop with their respective adjudicators, and participated in masterclasses. They also gave a public performance – a crowd-stopping showcase at the Queen Street Mall Top Stage. At the conclusion of the festival the group headed to the Gold Coast for a few days of well-deserved recreation and relaxation. They visited the largest Lego store in the southern hemisphere, Movie World and spent time on the beautiful shores of Surfers Paradise. The teachers and their students had an amazing time away, achieving great things in music and personally. Perhaps of even more significance was the seven days of team bonding which will only enhance Avondale College's music-making excellence in the months to come!

SCHOLARSHIP NZ Scholarship Exam - Entries due 1st August New Zealand Scholarship is New Zealand's most prestigious secondary school academic qualification. It provides recognition and monetary reward to top students in their last year of schooling. New Zealand Scholarship assessments enable candidates to be assessed against challenging standards, and are demanding for the most able candidates in each subject. Assessment is by either a written/spoken examination or by the submission of a portfolio or report of work produced throughout the year. Scholarship candidates are expected to demonstrate high-level critical thinking, abstraction and generalisation, and to integrate, synthesise and apply knowledge, skills, understanding and ideas to complex situations. Entries for New Zealand Scholarship close on Tuesday 1 August, and payment is due by 18 August. Students intending to enter must return their forms to the main office before next Tuesday. Avondale College is bidding a fond farewell to two staff members who have worked hard behind the scenes for a number of years. Business Manager Dawn Herber joined our staff in 2008, and was significantly involved in overseeing the school's rebuilding process. Recently Dawn has been on maternity leave following the birth of her second daughter, and we wish her all the very best as she redirects her formidable energy into the raising of her family, among other projects! After seven years of cheering on our teams, Avondale's Director of Sport, Cliff Jones, is leaving to take up a position a little closer to home. We wish him well in his new endeavours, and know the legacy of his familiar words will ring in our ears for a long time to come: "Avondale, enjoy your sport!"

Students are required to provide a written note for all absences, even after the school has been notified by phone. This note must be brought on the first day of attendance after the absence and given to your home room teacher.
TAUREWA CAMP 2017 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year. Congratulations to Jaga Mete, Sam Scott and Jack Childs who were selected for the Waitakere West Auckland U17 team, which placed 4th in New Zealand. Jaga was also selected for the NZ U17 tournament team, giving him the opportunity to participate in New Zealand basketball youth camps and representative teams.

Congratulations to two of our students who competed in New Zealand Secondary Schools Orienteering events in July. Ryan Moore had outstanding results, coming first in the Junior Boys Sprint and first in the Junior Boys Long event. Liam Stolberger also gained podium finishes, coming third in the Intermediate Boys Sprint and second in the Intermediate Boys Long event.
Year 12 student Kanah Andrew-Nahu has been making headlines recently, thanks to her outstanding ability in the sport of weightlifting! She has recently been selected to represent New Zealand at the Commonwealth and Oceania Championships in Australia in September.

NZ Herald article Tuesday 25 July: You could say Kanah Andrews-Nahu is raising the bar. Many times, in fact. So remember the name of the 16-year-old Avondale College weightlifter, already on the "long list" for selection to next year's Commonwealth Games in Australia's Gold Coast. She could be one of the next big things in New Zealand sport, coached by Olympic weightlifter and 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Richie Patterson - she already holds 78 New Zealand records in youth and junior weightlifting. Kanah's progress can be seen in trips representing New Zealand to Malaysia last year and Thailand earlier this year, made possible by winning an AMP scholarship. Applications for this year's scholarships have opened and will stay open until August 13 (go to amp.co.nz for more information). In Malaysia, she competed in the 69kg-plus category in the IWF youth world championships, finishing that event ranked 21st in the world. In Thailand, at the same championships, she finished 11th, breaking four New Zealand records in the process. "The scholarship was great," Kanah says. "It really enabled me to understand my potential and, you know, weightlifting in this country is a self-funded sport. These trips cost about $2500 to $3000 and more each time so receiving the scholarship was a huge blessing and has enabled me to continue following my dream." She is now going, again thanks to AMP, to the Gold Coast in September to compete at the Commonwealth and Oceania championships. In New Zealand, she is ranked first in the youth 75kgplus category and the junior under-90kg category - as well as ranked second in the seniors in the under-90kg class.
