B MOS WORLD CHAMPS HERE WE COME! Avondale College students have once again beaten hundreds of thousands of global contestants to win a place in the finals of the Microsoft Office Specialist World Championships being held in the USA next month. After a clean sweep of last week’s national finals in which, for the second year running, all finalists were from Avondale College, seven of our students will be heading to Anaheim, California, to represent New Zealand/Australasia in the global Microsoft and Adobe competitions.

All seven students have been involved with Avondale College’s ground-breaking Innovation Programme, in which students work on real world projects while achieving MOS and Adobe certifications and NCEA and Cambridge qualifications along the way. “These students are the youngest and most high performing group ever,” says Brent Lewis, Principal of Avondale College. “They have yet to be coached in any way for their tests, so their potential for success at the international level is exciting!”

SCHOOL BALL: AN ENCHANTED EVENING Approximately 650 gorgeously dressed students and staff enjoyed an enchanted evening at Eden Park on Saturday night. The dance floor was non-stop and full all night, thanks to the superb efforts of the DJ (and former student) Jan Holland. With theming by Eventz and photography by Cactus Photography, it was a night to remember! Special thanks to Mr Dewsnap and Ms Davis for their wonderful organisation of this event.

THE READERS' AND WRITERS' FESTIVAL Local and international writers presented at the Auckland Readers' and Writers' Festival held at the Aotea Centre on 17 May. They shared their love for literature, personal experiences and inspirations with us. Seventy two Avondale College students, including myself, joined hundreds of others in the buzzing theatre where Glenn Colquhoun entertained us with his clever poetry. Jennifer Niven, one of my favourite writers, then talked to us about coping with mental health issues and how her own helped her create exhilarating stories. Students then had their books signed by their favourite authors. In the afternoon, the brilliant Witi Ihimaera (who created the famous novels Māori Boy and Whale Rider) told us about how his ups and downs had shaped him into who he is today. Lastly, Ivan Coyote had us giggling with his undeniably stunning wit. The whole experience was just incredible and it gave me a fresh perspective on how other people find value in literature.
CHESS Gold and silver medals for Chess team Two teams of four represented Avondale College at the West Auckland Secondary School Chess Tournament held at Kelston on Tuesday 14 June, with one team winning two golds for individual performances and silver medals overall. The event was highly competitive, with strong teams fielded by highly ranked schools such as Auckland International College, Liston and Massey High. Avondale A won all their rounds, beating Kelston Boys 1st team 3-1, Massey High 3-1, AIC 3rd team 4-0, drawing againist AIC 1st team 2-2, beating Liston 3-1 and beating Kelston Boys 2nd team 4-0. Special congratulations to Jivitesh Khullar (Y11) and Xin Yang Liu (Y10) who both won six out of six games, and were awarded gold medals for their top class individual performance.

MONETARY POLICY CHALLENGE Five Year 13 Economics students took part in the Reserve Bank of New Zealand's Economics Competition this year. The students were required to provide a decision on the Official Cash Rate (which they got right!) together with analysis and justification. They then took part in a live Skype interview with Reserve Bank staff and were required to field answers to any questions asked. Our team achieved an overall grade of 4 out of 5 and the assessment of their presentation was judged excellent. Our students have been awarded with Certificates of Distinction in recognition of their performance. Distinction Award: Anirudh Iyer, Harok Jung, Neil Uy, Christine Sun, Chanel Samaratunga

Overall, Team B placed 7th out of nine teams and Team A came 1st equal with 11 points, (the draw to AIC 1st team counting against them). However, AIC 1st team won the overall tournament on tie break points, as their cumulative score was higher than ours. We therefore narrowly missed out on representing West Auckland in Christchurch at the National finals. “Every player showed grit, maturity and sportsmanship,” said Mr Kingsley, teacher in charge. “It was a privilege to be the teacher affiliated with the eight players.” The teams would like to thank Mr Kingsley for his help in organising and managing their involvement in the event. Basketball
The U17 B team won against Western Springs last night, with a final score of 51-10. The boys gave a great performance this week, dominating at both ends of the court. They kept Western Springs almost scoreless the entire second half, only allowing them two points. Standout players were Samuel Koerniadi who, as always, was the defensive man of the match, locking down anyone who came against him and proving yet again that defence is just as important as scoring. Also, Diaz McArthur was outstanding both on defence and offence, leading the team in scoring, with 19 points. It was a convincing win that means the boys are now top of the table and hoping to stay there. U15 B Basketball lost 51-28 to Western Springs. The opposition established their rhythm from the start and our guys simply couldn't string together a significant run to get into the game. Overall, our stand-out player is Hamo Lee, who arrived with very little skill or experience and has absorbed so much. He is now out-rebounding big guys, making jumpshots, and being effective on fast-breaks and defence.
Football
1st XI Girls won 2-0 against Selwyn. 2nd XI Girls lost 6-0 to Green Bay. Junior Girls lost 6-0 to Dio. Junior Girls lost 4-0 to Marist.
Hockey
Avondale Black lost 11-5 to Western Springs. Avondale’s B team had a hard fought 11-5 loss to Western Springs College. With only one sub, the girls displayed tenacity and endeavour, not to mention atawhai for each other. It was a great game enjoyed by all players and the spectators.
Netball
Senior Netball Tuesday 13th June Premier 1 vs Massey lost 49-23. Premier 2 vs ACG Senior A lost 21-12. Senior Girls Black vs Lynfield won 26-18. Senior Girls White vs Green Bay won 16-15. Senior Girls Gold vs Hoani Kereru won 25-19. Senior Girls Silver vs Lynfield Snr Green lost 24-20. Senior Girls Grey vs St Dominics lost 14-4. Senior girls Grey vs Green Bay lost 18-12.
Rugby Union
Premier Girls vs Aorere College won 49-0. After the convincing win last week, the 1st XV faced a large and very experienced Tangaroa team who sit top of the table and have conceded no losses all season. With fog still sitting lightly on the field, Avondale started strong on defence. It wasn’t long before Tangaroa got a penalty kick over the posts then, with good tactical play, ran in a try and conversion. Avondale answered back, scoring and converting in the first half. At half time Avondale were still very much in the game despite a relentless attacking game from Tangaroa. The second half saw things unravel for Avondale until they came back strongly towards the end of the second half, running in a second try. The final score was 36-14 to Tangaroa. Tries were scored by Billy Faraimo and Pilitati Tuilaepa. Player of the Day was Billy Faraimo.
The U15 Hockey team beat Sacred Heart 3-0, which should secure our place as either second or third on the table. Going into this game we were in a second-equal tie with four other teams. In order to consolidate our position as the only team in second place, this was a "must win" game for us. The boys did not disappoint, with a very solid team effort. The boys showed great communication and passing in a game that relied less on individual brilliance and more on working together. Spending most of our time in their half, we closed down their occasional counter-attacks effectively. Goals came with our consistent pressure and the game ended 3-0 and with us in a clear second place on the table. With two games to go in the rounds, we are quietly confident of a top four position and a spot in the play-offs, following our final two matches with McLeans and St Peters. Special mentions go to Joseph Mani and Anoosh Kulkarni who both played very well this week. 1st XI Boys vs Rosmini. Our boys lost against this top Shore team. Although our boys competed with endeavour, Rosmini was two or three steps above us. 1st XI Girls lost 6-0 to Westlake Girls.
Underwater Hockey
Senior Open had two games: Playing against Mt Albert Grammar we won 6-1, and against Baradene won 9-0.

TAUREWA CAMP 2017 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
