B MARKET DAY Two classes of Year 12 Business Studies held a very successful market day in D Block during lunchtime on Wednesday last week. The event was one aspect of their Term 2 assessment worth 9 NCEA Credits, in which students must write a group business plan to take a product to market. Having now completed their first market day, students will review the success of their product and plan and prepare for a second market day, which will be held on on Wednesday 21 July. A percentage of the students' profit is to be donated to charity; our students have elected to support the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation.

REPORT EVENING Heading to the World Champs: Christopher Tang, Rita Zhong and Ed Allison
The atmosphere has been intense up in the computer room of A27 today, as fifteen Avondale College students compete in the national final of the Microsoft Office Specialist Championships. The competition is fierce, as the winner in each category (MS Word 2013, PowerPoint 2013 and Excel 2013) will find themselves competing in the World Champs in the USA in July! This is the second year running that Avondale students have won all available places in the New Zealand final - and the fourth year that our students have dominated the competition! Outstanding results and fastest times in previous testing means that three of our current students have already secured their places in the US finals for their individual Microsoft and Adobe categories - they are: Christopher Tang (MS Word 2016), Ed Allison (MS PowerPoint 2016) and Rita Zhang (Adobe Photoshop). TUESDAY 4TH JULY 4.30 - 7.30PM HELD IN THE ATRIUM All students will soon be issued with a report that is designed to give an indication of their progress so far this year. There is a report evening planned for parents to meet with the teachers to discuss the report. This will be held in the Atrium on Tuesday 4th July between 4:30pm and 7:30pm. Please note that online booking of interviews through the Family Connection will be available from Monday 19 June and will close on Sunday 2 July. From 3 July, appointments will be filled in manually with the appointment form posted out with the report. Once reports have been posted out, they will be available for viewing online through Family Connection / Student Information / Documents.

ENVIRONMENTAL COUNCIL AT MOTUTAPU
LEVEL 2 BIOLOGY Level 2 Biology students are discovering for themselves just how animals are adapted to their way of life as part of an internal assessment assignment. Through their study of gas exchange systems in three animal groups (fish, mammals and insects), students have had the opportunity to carry out hands-on tasks such as dissections in their lessons. This week students have been studying fish gills, with the dissection providing a way for them to investigate the structures in more detail. Despite a few squeamish individuals, the class thoroughly enjoyed the task!
Avondale College's Environmental Council spent an enjoyable day with other volunteers and the Motutapu Trust tree planting on Motutapu Island on Sunday. Our group planted 132 bushes out of the 1050 on the day. The students were amazing and never faltered even though the work was strenuous. They demonstrated the tenacity we have come to expect from our students and had a thoroughly enjoyable day, rounding off with a sausage sizzle on the beach.
BRIDGE BUILDING RESULTS The bridges built during last week's competition day were put to the ultimate test this week! A record number of 19 entries were built this year, and the bridges which held the most weight before breaking were built by the following teams: 1st: Christopher Tang (10ELS), Roshni Oberoi (9SIL) and Xinyang Liu (10ELS): 10kg 2nd: Tommy Ong (10SPH), Rohan Sharma (10SPH) and Arc Porcioncula: 7.3kg 3rd: Julie Jeong (9OPA), Abigail Shin-Kelso (9OPA) and Melody Cao (9OPA): 6.8kg Honourable mentions go to the other teams of Alex Hope, Ed Allison and Sunwoo Oh and Maanasi Nori, Rachel D'Souza and Charlotte Connolly who completed the top five. Although the competition didn't quite reach the heights of last year (when the top entry managed 17kg), still some impressive designs were devised given the various constraints. The top three teams will go on to represent Avondale College at the the Aurecon Bridge Building competition later this year. 4

SPORTS REPORT Week 6- Term 2- Monday 5th - Sunday 11th June
Basketball The Premier Boys narrowly lost 86-82 to Liston College on Friday 9th June. The Under 17A Boys had a convincing 56-36 win over Henderson High School on Thursday 8th June. The Under 17B Boys had a great 39-28 win against Henderson High School, on Thursday 8th June. The boys played exceptionally well as a team, keeping small mistakes to a minimum and working together as a unit on defence. Standout players for the game were Sage Peni who was one of the top scorers, also Francis Intic who led the team in scoring and Zakiah Puia in rebounds. The Under 15A Boys suffered a 53-14 loss to Mt Roskill Grammar on Wednesday 7th June. The Under 15B Boys narrowly lost 34-31 to Liston College on Wednesday 7th June. The Premier Girls went down 81-51 to a well-organised Carmel College team. Special mention to Braxton Robinson and Mercy Lemisio who had their best games this whole season. Metisa Edwards scored numerous baskets and Maclani Michael proved again why she is considered the most promising player of the league. The Under 15 Girls beat Hoani Waititi 28-18 on Thursday 8th June. The Most Valuable Player was awarded to Maraea Whiu for her great defense and strong dribble driving to score baskets. Special mention also to Daphne Edwards for her defence and scoring some baskets. The Under 17 Girls had a great battle against reigning Auckland champions Mt Albert Grammar, going down by a solitary basket. We were behind all game but came back to within one point in the dying seconds. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find the winning basket and the final score was 34-32 to Mt Albert Grammar. Special mention to Grace Nweke for her great defensive play, Maclani Michael who scored the bulk of our points and Fifita and Lavinia Latu who both had strong debuts.
Cross Country Sixteen Avondale College students slogged it out through the fields, mud and rugged terrain of the Auckland Schools Cross Country Championships course held at Barry Curtis Park in Flat Bush on Thursday 8 June. The best result of the day came from Joanna Poland (Year 9) who won a silver medal in the junior girls' 3km course. We wish her well as she heads to the New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country Champs being held this weekend in Christchurch!
Football On Wednesday 7th June the 1st XI Girls drew 1-1 with St Mary’s College, the girls had a great game and showed a lot of determination and tenacity. The 2nd XI Girls suffered a 12-0 loss to Kelston Girls and the Junior Girls lost 7-1 to Epsom Girls Grammar. On Saturday 10th June the 1st XI Boys had great 1-0 win over Rangitoto College. The 2nd XI Boys had a convincing 2-1 win over Mt Albert Grammar. The 3rd XI Boys had an outstanding 12-0 win over Mt Albert Grammar, the boys showed a lot of HEART values and great enthusiasm throughout the game. The Year 10 Boys had a fantastic 6-1 win against Lynfield College. The Year 9A Boys suffered a 1-0 loss to Rangitoto College and the Year 9B team had a great 3-1 win over Green Bay High School on Saturday 10th June.
Hockey The 1st XI Boys had a tough game on Wednesday 7th June. With the goalie unable to play, we decided to run without a keeper and use the extra player to crowd the opposition and limit them from getting shots on target. The boys showed great tenacity and never gave up. The final score was a 10-0 loss to St Kentigern College. The 1st XI Girls went down 6-0 to Baradene College on Thursday 8th June.
Lacrosse The Premier Girls suffered an 18-4 loss to Epsom Girls Grammar on Thursday 8th June. Avondale Black suffered a 10-0 loss to St Cuthbert’s College, and Avondale White went down 14-5 to Diocesan.
Netball Senior Netball was played on Tuesday 6th June at Te Pai Courts. Rugby League The U15 Boys suffered a 56-12 loss to Southern Cross on Wednesday 7th June.
Rugby Union Saturday 10 June brought a hard-fought first win of the season for the 1st XV against Howick College. The team started strong with Stephen Soai scoring an early first try, and the half time score was 5-3 to Avondale. In the second half the team showed great HEART and some of the best running rugby they have played all season. Good running, passing and tactical kicking brought three tries to Avondale scored by Ezra Kapeteni, Billy Faraimo and Josh Colavanua. Three conversions from Jacob Anitelea saw the final score 26-10 to Avondale. Players of the day were Kiahan Simons-Tipau and Pita Fepuleai. It was a very early start for our 6th grade rugby team on Saturday 10th. The boys were in good spirits and represented the College well. Our forwards were a little depleted through sickness and
the early wake up call was still evident during the first half. Pukekohe High School were well-drilled and effective in cleaning out their rucks. Our boys showed considerable resilience and after some feedback from the coach at half-time and showed real HEART in the second half. They played with a greater sense of urgency and upped their tempo. The backs showed some fluid passing through multiple phases and had the greater share of territory. The result was already evident but Avondale piled on considerable pressure and managed to cross the try-line. The team shows great promise with talent in all areas of the game. Notable performances came from Dylan Lam Vern Bing, in his first ever game of Union, and Psalm Tugaga. The final score was 60-5 to Pukekohe High School. The 2nd XV suffered a 40-12 loss against Kelston Boys on Saturday 10th June. The U14 Boys started the competition round off with a convincing 32-12 victory over Mt Roskill Grammar on Saturday 10th June. Nathaniel Roma finished off some good structured play with two tries. Mark Tuvao and Wilfred Hansen also crossed for 5 pointers and Isimase Tavae displayed some much improved goal kicking with some accurate strikes.
Squash The Premier Boys had an outstanding 11-3 win against Sacred Heart College on Friday 10th June.
Underwater Hockey The Senior Open team played two games on Tuesday 6th June and suffered a 5-0 loss to Mt Albert Grammar and 7-1 loss to Howick College.
TAUREWA CAMP 2017 Year 13, Year 12 and Year 10 students have the opportunity to go to Taurewa Camp. We encourage families to start making early regular payments towards the Taurewa camp fee, as the camp fee must be fully paid prior to departure. Year 10 students will receive their first briefing for their camp approximately 10 weeks before departure, but students are encouraged to tell their parents early that their camps are coming up this year.
