Advancing health and equity for all Kelly Matter, Avivo President & CEO
Avivo is ever present. We remain a stabilizing force in the Twin Cities and central Minnesota amidst uncertain times. The pandemic has deepened disparities for many Minnesotans, increasing inequities in education, housing, healthcare and employment. Avivo is HERE. And we are focused more than ever on our vision: communities free of economic and health inequities. We cannot do this alone! Working together -- corporations, businesses and individuals -- we will help build stronger, healthier and more equitable communities. When you invest in Avivo, you are a part of transforming the lives of people who face the greatest obstacles to success. Look at what your support of Avivo can do! Last year: • Nearly 1,000 individuals and their families moved off welfare into work, • 885 individuals found housing and supportive services to avert homelessness, • Nearly 1,500 individuals entered jobs or careers, and • Close to 4,000 people accessed treatment and mental health services. Our unique combination of services – chemical and mental health, housing, career education and employment services – helps individuals secure paths to better health, stability and advancement. With your support, we can advance health and equity for all. Thank you for helping create opportunities for prosperous futures for all Minnesotans.
2021 Celebrated Community Leader Award Recipients Neel Kashkari, President & CEO, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis Alan Page, retired Minnesota Supreme Court justice and founder, Page Education Foundation Avivo’s Celebrated Community Leader Award honors individuals who are leading positive change in our communities. We are excited to honor Neel Kashkari and Justice Alan Page as Avivo’s 2021 Celebrated Community Leaders. Together and independently, they are working on influencing change in Minnesota’s education system to break cycles of poverty and create a society in which everyone can fully participate. Most recently, they have proposed an amendment to Minnesota’s constitution to make a quality public education a fundamental right. Their work directly addresses Minnesota’s yawning achievement gap for students of color as well as white students in rural areas of the state. Their efforts stand to break down barriers to equity and brighter futures, as these students grow to become adults, as well as our neighbors and co-workers. Avivo serves thousands of Minnesotans every year challenged by inadequate education and the follow-on effects of being left behind without the tools to build one’s success. We are thrilled to recognize the important work of Mr. Kashkari and Justice Page!

Conversation on Education Equity with Neel Kashkari, Justice Alan Page, and Kelly Matter, Avivo President & CEO
The work of Justice Page and President Kashkari is a vital step toward a more equitable and just start for our children. Join us as we discuss their proposed amendment to Minnesota’s constitution, the role businesses can play in supporting a workforce more prepared for success, and the intersection of nonprofits in building stronger communities.
Alan Page retired Minnesota Supreme Court justice and founder of Page Education Foundation
Alan Page is prominently known in the state of Minnesota and nationally. He is most recently known for his career as a Minnesota Supreme Court Justice. He became the first African American to win election to the court in 1992 and served until he reached the mandatory retirement age of 70 on 2015. Prior to serving as a supreme court justice, he worked as an attorney for a Minneapolis law firm and served seven years as an attorney in the Minnesota Attorney General’s office. He was first known for his NFL football career, playing for the Minnesota Vikings for 11 years and three years for the Chicago Bears. He earned All-Pro honors six times and was voted to nine consecutive Pro Bowls. In 1988, Alan Page was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. That year, Alan and his wife Diane created the Page Education Foundation to offer financial assistance to students of color facing barriers to attaining their educational dreams. These young leaders return to their communities to serve as tutors and role models for elementary and junior high school students. Since its beginning, nearly $16 million in Page Grants have been awarded to more than 7,700 Page Scholars. Page Scholars have given nearly 500,000 hours of volunteer service to communities across Minnesota, impacting the lives of 50,000 children.
Neel Kashkari President and CEO, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis
Neel Kashkari has been president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis since January 1, 2016. He serves as a member on the Federal Open Market Committee, bringing the Ninth Federal Reserve District’s perspective to monetary policy discussions in Washington, D.C. In addition to those responsibilities, Neel oversees Minneapolis Fed operations and leads its many initiatives. Among them, he was instrumental in establishing the Opportunity & Inclusive Growth Institute, whose mission is to ensure that world-class research helps to improve the economic well-being of all Americans. Most recently, he has joined with retired Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Alan Page to propose amending Minnesota’s constitution to make quality public education a fundamental right. This effort supports the Fed’s mandate to achieve maximum employment, with education being a key to obtaining a good job. Under Neel’s leadership, the Minneapolis Fed also released an action plan on “Ending Too Big to Fail,” which calls for tighter bank regulations to avoid future taxpayer bailouts of large financial institutions. Neel earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois. He became an aerospace engineer, developing technology for NASA missions. Eventually turning to finance and public policy, he earned his MBA from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, joined Goldman Sachs, and served in several senior positions at the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Before joining the Minneapolis Fed, he ran for governor of California in 2014 on a platform focused on economic opportunity.

Eric’s Story “Being [in my own housing] has really given me purpose. I see good things in my future. The future’s looking great for me.” Eric was living on the streets for five years and trying to hold down a job. A street outreach worker helped him get into Avivo Village, our transitional housing shelter focused on helping individuals find permanent housing. He was connected with the supports he needed to move into an affordable apartment. He is working on his career and life goals. Having a home allows him to spend time with his children.

That’s a big thing.” Tawny came to Avivo’s family treatment program from living on the streets. She was nearly eight months pregnant. Avivo provided family housing paired with treatment. Philip’s story “Avivo really prepared me for an IT career. If I hadn’t had training like what I had at Avivo, I wouldn’t have been successful.” Philip endured multiple layoffs and decided a career change was the answer, rather than another short-term job. Deciding on a career in information technology (IT), he enrolled in Avivo Institute for Career & Technical Education. He was selected for an IT internship at Avivo after graduating, which gave him experience in a tough job market during the pandemic. His IT certifications, combined with the hands-on experience, helped him quickly land a his current job!
