Rabbi Lance J. Sussman, Ph.D. grew up in Baltimore and is speaking on the history of our two historic congregations, Har Sinai and Oheb Shalom. He is a prolific author and popular lecturer in the field of American Jewish history.

Rabbi Sussman is Chair of the Board of Governors of Gratz College and Senior Rabbi of Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel in Elkins Park, PA. He has a B.A. from Franklin and Marshall College (1975) in Religious Studies, a M.A. in Hebrew Letters (1979) and rabbinic ordination from the Hebrew Union College – Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati ( HUC, 1980). In 1987, Sussman received his Ph.D. in Jewish history from HUC.

Teen-led Women’s Seder for all women in the community. Bring your grandmothers, aunts, sisters, and daughters.

Rabbi Sussman has taught at a number of universities and colleges in the United States. A tenured professor of History at SUNY-Binghamton, he also was the Chair of the Binghamton Jewish Studies Program before moving to Philadelphia in 2001. Additionally, Sussman has taught at Princeton University, Hunter College and Rutgers University.

In 2019, he was appointed as Professor of History at Gratz College.

Join the religious school for this special performance of one of the Jewish Museum of Maryland’s living history characters: Henrietta Szold. We have a special history with the Szold family.

Oheb Shalom’s first senior rabbi, Rabbi Benjamin Szold (1859–1892), was one of the leaders of 19th century American Jewish community. His daughter, Henrietta Szold, was the founder of Hadassah.

Before “community organizing” had a name, there was Henrietta Szold—the rabbi’s daughter who broke with the traditional role of women to become a champion of Jewish engagement. Her tenacity and courage played a vital role in the expansion of social services, medical services and the founding of the state of Israel. Henrietta is portrayed by actress Natalie Pilcher.

Georges and Anne are a couple of retired music teachers enjoying life in their eighties. However, Anne suddenly has a stroke and their lives are never the same. That incident begins Anne’s harrowingly steep physical and mental decline as George attempts to care for her. JUNE 8 S.P.I.C.E. COMING TO AMERICA: A BRIEF SURVEY OF JEWISH IMMIGRATION ✓ 10:30 AM–NOON, CLASS #1

In 1654, the first Jewish community in North America was established in New Amsterdam. Since that time there have been numerous waves of Jewish immigration. This class will take a brief look at when it occurred, why people came, and how they fared as immigrants and as citizens. Facilitator: Rabbi Floyd L. JUNE 11 TOUR THE DENNIS & PHILLIP RATNER ART MUSEUM 10 AM–3 PM

Travel to Bethesda to tour a Biblicalthemed art museum. We will be treated to a personal tour by artist Phillip Ratner who has spent many years working in sculpture, painting, etched glass, tapestry, drawing, and the graphic arts.

In 1984, Philtip Ratner opened The Israel Bible Museum in Safad, Israel. Our focus is on understanding the meaning of the text and relating it to a modern perspective to help us face challenges in today’s world.
