Project Description The Ministry of Rural Development, in partnership with the Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited (HUDCO) and UNDP aims to promote green housing in rural areas.

3.District level: During the field visits the survey team had meetings with the DMs of North Tripura, Dhalai and West Tripura district.

Each of the three DMs spent their valuable time and put forward their suggestions.

The two most important ones were a) assess IAY peoples’ aspirations on their shelters, b) less waterintensive toilet.

The study outcome was to : a) Demarcate the state of Tripura into distinct ‘housing zones’ on the basis of resource mapping exercise, b) Prepare a compendium of sustainable green design and technologies.

The study was aimed at examining the existing IAY conditions at all levels, identifying gaps and putting forward recommendations in the context of IAY housing and its delivery.

# From our household survey we have seen that the minimum width of the room is 2.7m, hence we have provided a long rectangular room of 8.1x2.7m and subdivided it into 3bays (bedroom,multipurpose room, kitchen) having minimum wdth of 2.7m #1.8m wide verandahs are placed on either sides of the longitudinal wall. Activities like handloom, clothes drying and rice grinding as seen from the surveyed households can be done here in these verandahs #WALL:- 75mm Brick Walls are provided on either ends with the upper triangle gable wall in GCI and the front and back portion of the rooms have 250mm THK stabilized Rammed Earth (7% Cement) till cill and 40mm Cement Plastered Bamboo mat wall above. 75x125 RCC Seismic Band has been provided for all around for seismic safety #Roof:- Micro Concrete Tile Roof has been Recommended #Floor16mm 1:6CM with neat cement finish on 75 Flat Brick Soling(1:4) with 75mm Sand Cushion Below. #In future, the user can construct Bamboo Mat Partition Walls for segregation of rooms, as we have seen in most IAY surveyed houses in Tripura # One Verandah can be later done in an incremental basis and the user will have an option to increase the width of one room from existing 2.7m to an additional 1.8m making it a 4.5mx2.7m large room right upto the verandah without much alteration to the design

#We have seen in numerous surveyed houses an urgent need of proper storage spaces and hence in our second design type we have provided a 5.6mx3.225m room, the measurements been derived after taking the average surveyed houses of all IAY households. #The room having a carpet area of 18.28sq.m. A verandah infront which could be in an incremental basis of 16.65sq.m and a kitchen space of 8.93sq/m also on an incremental basis. #The key feature of this design is the addition of an attic space of 7.4sq.m about 2.4m from the ffl having a head height of 1.5m for a single person to stand erect. #Wall- 250mm THK stabilized rammed earth 7% cement till cill and 40mm Cement Plastered bamboo mat wall above. #Roof- Micro Concrete Tiles have been recommended. #Floor- Pucca Floor is recommended with 16mm 1:6 CM with neat cement finish on 75 flat brick soling with 75mm Sand Cushion below.

This is again derived from the common practice of some affluent people of the settlement. # The standard dimension of the room will be 7mx3m with a carpet area of 21sq.m # The Verandahs can be made in incremental basis. # Total Cost of the house will be Rs 1.52lakhs, the cost will reduce to Rs1.15lakhs if the verandah roods are made of sun dried grass. # Wall:- 250mm THK stabilized (7% Cement) Rammed Earth till cill and 40mm Cement Plastered Bamboo Matt wall above. # Roof:- Micro Concrete Tiles(MCT) have been recommended. # Floor:- Pucca Floor is recommended.

3. Multipurpose Hall for the Kurani Ainkawa Community Project Description 1. The Programme Implemented Jointly by UNHABITAT and UNDP in Close Partnership with the Erbil Governorate aimed to improve the housing delivery system in Erbil.

2. UNDP organized four focused group sessions and one validation session within the community to incorporate preferences, needs and ideas of the community into the design of the Multi Purpose hall.

3. The design was finalized after two further consultation sessions between the designer and the community.

4. The Multi-purpose community hall is designed not only to be community- friendly, but also environmentfriendly 5. An important element of the empowerment activities in Kurani Ainkawa and the capacity building of the Kurani Ainawa Community organization is building community ownership.

6. It is expected that the more community ownership is strengthened and the more the community needs are met through the multipurpose hall, the longer the building will be well-maintained.

Therefore, community engagement and empowerment activities are required to be well-knit together with the construction of the multipurpose community hall and UNDP plans to continue engaging widely with the civil society active in Erbil and the institutions of the Kurdish Regional Government for this purpose

Project Area # KURANI AINKAWA was an informal settlement until recently, when this UNHABITAT and UNDP’s joint programme intervened for improvement. # It is a neighbourhood in the central area of Erbil City, Erbil Governorate, inhabited by over 10,000 residents in over 1500 houses. # It was first established in the 1960s when citizens received the land as a form of compensation from the government # From 1985 villagers informally occupied the neighbourhood’s private and government land. # KuraniAinkawa was chosen as one of the two sites to pilot slum-like neighbourhood improvement in the UNHABITAT/UNDP programme aimed to improve the housing delivery system to Erbil

Design Key Features # Seggregation of male and female activity areas with separate entries to the building as suggested by the community and as per the socio economic study

The halls have a movable partition, thus, whenever needed the combined space could be used for social gathering or using the hall for film show and other community celebrations # The two main domes over the halls are not only for thermal comfort during summer, it gives the building a strong visual presence in the local context the changing perspertive of the building as one looks at it while driving past the front road is highly dynamic. # the two open courtyards for the male and female sections are meant for meetings, performances. # The inner walls facing the courtyards have the murals showing stories of the most important citadel of the Erbil city. It creates an ambience of the cultural past. # The hollow special brick bond and the filler roof slab have been adopted in the design to reduce the recurring energy costs of the building

4. Additional Skill Acquisition ProgrammeCommunity Skill Park for the State of Kerala Project Background and Information The Additional Skill Acquisition Program (ASAP) has been designed as a joint initiative of the Department of Higher Education (DOHE) and the Department of General Education, Government of Kerala (GOK), to vocationalize higher education to “prevent� graduates from falling into the low employability trap. ASAP will enhance the employability of the youth while they pursue general education at the HS and UG levels. The outcome will be that ASAP certificate holders are more employable.ASAP is envisaged as part of a preventive strategy to address the existing unemployment issue in the State of Kerala. The broad aim of State Skill Development Project is to meet the growing skilled manpower requirements of the state and to bridge the gap between supply and demands.

DESIGN PROTOTYPE 1- GROUND FLOOR PLAN # We have provided 2 Building Blocks for this Design. The Front Block being the Administration Block which has the Meeting Room, Lobby and Reception Area, Counselling, Accounts and Records Room and the Toilet Block.

The Rear Block is the Academic Block having the 4 Halls- IT Hall, Precision Hall, Activity Hall and Heavy Machinery Hall. # The two Building Blocks are conencted by means of a Plaza/Courtyard. #The CLient insisted on using Ramps instead of elevators or staircase so we had to tuck in the ramp of 1:12 slope which can be accessed from the Plaza Area

DESIGN PROTOTYPE 1-FIRST FLOOR PLAN # On the First Floor we have on the Administrative Block, the Faculty Room, Store Room and Resouce Room with an Open Sitout Space. # The Hall Rooms are converted into Classroms on this Floor and a Mezzanine Level has been added which acts as an instructer’s cabin. #The two Building Blocks are connected on the First Floor through a Bridge # We have provided a Cut out over the Plaza which makes room for more Light and Ventilation and breaks the feeling of a confinement.

5. SUPPORTING HUMAN CAPITAL DEVELOPMENT IN MEGHALAYA- INFRASTRUCTURE CONDITION SURVEY OF EXISTING BUILDINGS Project Background The main objective of the project was to upgrade all secondary schools in Meghalaya, a North-eastern state, to the national standards. Hence, a need assessment of the education infrastructure was carried to examine the existing school facilities against the national standards and identify those which fall short of it. After the schools were identified, the gaps in terms of additional classrooms, laboratories, libraries, etc., drinking water, sanitation were calculated and suitable design and technology proposals were put forward.

Project Scope The scope of this project was to do the condition Assessment Survey of 117 schools in Meghalaya. In the first phase, 21 schools had been surveyed.

Selection Criteria The majority of secondary schools in Meghalaya are government aided private run schools. The government’s financial assistance is restricted to the teachers’ salary and a few academic matters. Due to the lack of money for infrastructure, the physical conditions of most of the schools were extremely poor with inadequate facilities.

ADB intervention was to demonstrate how such schools could be upgraded to the national standards.

Meghalay has 39 blocks spread over 11 districts. At the rate of 3 schools per block, 117 schools were identified for ADB intervention

History of the School

Dagal Apal Secondary School is located in Dagal Apal village which is under the Songsak Block in

The school is located near the Namisa village, about 36km from the District Head Quater, i.e Williamnagar. This area can be accessed by the means of roadway connection. The road from Williamnagar to Songsak is metalled and in fair condition. However, the road from Songsak to Dagal Apal is in bad condition. The Nangafa market is located around 3 km away from the school. (the boundary and direction are in the Auto-cad drawing).

The school has a catchment area is not less than 11km away from the school, with Kahanthulguri.

East Garo Hill District, Meghalaya.

The school started with Upper Primary in 1980’s, and was recognized by the government in 1982. The school was upgraded to secondary section in 1996 and the present enrolment is 57 in this section.

The land-use of the campus is mainly for educational institutional.There are 3 toilets within the school campus, all of these are in bad condition. The school does not have proper fencing to define the boundary of the school campus, no dedicated parking space and no water supply for drinking water, no water tank for water storage, no electricity connection. But there is a dumping pit within the school campus for dumping garbage. Water is drawn from the nearby well for school use.

CONDITION ASSESSMENT

21 schools were surveyed as a preproject activity. These schools were visited by a team of surveyors and detailed drawing of the existing buildings, condition assessment was carried out.

Following that survey, the data wa snalysed and suitable sustainable environment friendly design and technologies were recommended on a case by case basis. The first phase of tender was floated based on the suggested designs and technologies.

Among some of the non negotiables were the use of local materials and skills, barrier fre campus and above all was the environmental sustainability of the proposed upgrading programme

7. Nearly Zero Carbon Building for a Detached London House Assignment Description The exercise was part of the Modelling and Passive Strategies assignment where a two storey detached house in London had to be modelled.

The base case scenario had to be then modelled to achieve the Fabric Energy Efficiency Stage.

The FEES had to be then modelled to reach the Carbon Complaince target for detached buildings of 10kgCO2/m2/year.

After achieving the Carbon Complaince Target, the building model had to be modelled using renewable energy sources in order to make it extremely close to a Zero Carbon building.

Finally the embodied carbon and the carbon payback period had to be calculated.

The base model selected is a 2-storey detached house with a rectangular plan of 8.5 x6.5 m.

A rectangular plan of 2-storey was chosen with a pitched roof as achieving a low surface area to volume ratio is essential. Building Surface area is kept as optimum as possible to maximize energy efficiency.

Impact of Heating and Cooling when the base case model is tweaked in terms of Window-Wall Ratio (30% glazing on South wall and 10% in remaining), Wall u-value(changed from 0.3 to 0.1), Roof u-value(0.25 to 0.12), Floor u-value(0.25 to 0.15), Window glazing (window u-value 0.13, g factor 0.2, visible light transmittance 0.3), Airtightness(from 1ach to 0.3ach), keeping Natural Ventilation ON at 5 air changes per hour, Overhang of 0.5m.

The graph below shows the impact on the model after changing each specific element from the Base model.

The optimized scenario is the combination of the following factors resulting in decreasing the overall Heating and Cooling load as well as the Total energy significantly from the base case simulation.

• Window-Wall Ratio as 30% in the South wall and 10% in East, West and North.

• Window Glazing Value- (window u-value 0.13, g factor 0.2, visible light transmittance 0.3) • U-values of wall- 0.1W/m2K, U-value of roof- 0.12 W/m2K, U-values of floor- 0.15W/ m2K • Airtightness 0.3ach • Natural Ventilation 5ach

With the combination of these optimized scenarios the total energy was reduced to 45.91kWh/m2/ year from the base case scenario of 114.26kWh/m2/year.

Target to achieve for FEES stage is 46kWh/m2/year.

Key Factors that play a vital role in overall energy demand 1. u-values of wall and roof:- The u-values of the wall and roof were bettered from the base scenario by increasing the insulation thickness. The wall u-value was changed from 0.3 to 0.1, roof u-value from 0.25 to 0.12 and this resulted in reducing the heating and cooling load as well as reduction in overall energy demand.

2. Airtightness:- The value of the airtightness was altered from 1ach to 0.3 ach and this resulted in reducing the amount of heat loss through air infiltration. This significantly reduced the heating demand as well as the total energy demand. However, an increase in cooling demand was observed after this change.

3.Natural Ventilation:- Introducing natural ventilation into the optimized scenario, and changing it, by zone, to 5 ac/h, bettered the heating and cooling demand as well as the overall energy demand marginally. 4. Window U-Value and G-Value:- The u-value of the window was reduced from 2.7 to 0.13 W/m2K. This resulted in significant reduction in the heating, cooling demand and energy demand of the building.

However, it must be noted, that when the window u-value and G-value is used in conjunction with the Wall to Window ratio that has been optimized as South side walls 30% of wall area and the remaining as 10%, the results showed significant reduction in the cooling load and moderate reduction in the heating demand and total energy demand.

The graph shows the impact relation between Base and Optimized case, when WWR+Window Glazing are modelled together. Hence optimization in terms of WWR of 30% for South walls, and 10% for remaining walls with the improvement of the Window glazing value is taken into consideration along with other parameters to end up with the most optimized case scenario.

3. ACHIEVE CARBON COMPLAINCE To achieve the carbon compliance target to 10kgCO2/m2/year for detached dwelling, a few steps were undertaken to optimize the building fabric.

1. Installing Photo Voltaic cells A Solar photo-voltaic cell is to be mounted on the South facing pitched roof to generate optimum electricity. The solar PVs are placed on a 30degree angle which is the slope of the pitched roof.

The following table shows the trial calculations undertaken to find the ideal Solar PV size that is required to make the PV generate more energy than the energy demand of the model.

2. Installing Solar Thermal Heaters

Even though the target of 10 kgCO2/m2 was achieved, the impact of a Solar Thermal Heater on the model needed to be tested upon. A 5x2m solar thermal collector is installed to achieve energy savings. The solar hot water generates 3034.53kWh of heat for the detached house which covers 100% of the hot water demand in the building.

4. EXTREME LOW CARBON TECHNOLOGIES 1. Installing Photo Voltaic cells To aim for a Nearly Zero Carbon Building, a series of tests were conducted. Below includes two of those scenarios.

To push the remaining operational carbon from the carbon compliance step, the solar PV panel of 5.4x3.6 is now increased to 4.1x6.5m.

This will enable the new PVs to generate more power to cover all the building energy demand, that includes space heating, cooling and water demand.

This report was successful in modelling a 110m2 detached house in London having initial energy loads(in base model stage ) of 114.26kWh/m2 to 45.91kWh/m2 in the FEES stage. The Target to achieve at this stage was 46kWh/m2 and it was successfully achieved.

In the Carbon Compliance stage, installation of Solar PVs resulted in the reduction of Carbon level from the target 10 kgCO2/m2 to 9.52 kgCO2/m2. However to try the extents of modelling Solar Hot Water system was included with the PV panels resulting in bringing down the Carbon Level to 4.95 kgCO2/m2.

In the Extreme Low Carbon Energy Phase, two scenarios were tested, and the second scenario with the large pv area resulted in bring down the Carbon level to 0.06 kgCO2/m2, which resulted in a “Near Zero Carbon Building�

Next the Embodied Carbon of only the insulation materials were calculated and compared to the Base case, FEES stage and Extreme Low Carbon Energy Phase. The resultant values were used to calculate the Carbon Payback.

8. Post Occupancy Evaluation of an Office Building inside an Educational Establishment About the Project The project was part of a 4 member group to examine an office building inside an education institute.

The Energy Performance Operational Rating in the Display Energy Certificate (DEC) issued to this building since it became operational in the year 2010, is declining.

The objective of the project was to investigate the possible reasons for this decline and suggest alternatives to increase the performance of the building.

Though the study data was collected by various members of the group.

Each member focused on a particular section.

I conducted the occupancy survey which included the preliminary site visit, bus survey questionnaire and personal interviews with candidates sharing interesting information in the bus survey.

The results of the survey were then individually synthesized to arrive at the findings and hence at possible recommendations that the building Manager could incorporate to increase the performance of the building.

Energy Consumption Upon undertaking the pre survey calculations, we found that there are two types of energy feeders used in this building, one is through electricity and the other is through gas boilers.

In terms of cost, the cost per year for electricity consumption is 16609GBP and for gas is 1808GBP.

The graph on the right shows the average energy consumption per day per month for the period of October,2014 to December,2014.

If we look closely we will see that there is a spike in energy usage from 8.30am in the morning to around 4.30pm/6.30pm.

This is primarily because the office and workshop areas of the building becomes operational from this time.

Artificial Lighting:- Lux Level Measurement

There are spot lights along the corridor side of the rooms.

However their angles are not properly adjusted and when they are turned on, the lights from the spot lights fall a bit above the position from where it actually should illuminate.

In- Use Monitoring and Audit

After preliminary site survey, it was decided to place the HOBO on the 2nd floor,to check the temperature, relative humidity changes that occur on the 2nd floor.

2 i-buttons on the first floor and 1 i-button on the ground floor inside the staff lounge were placed, which is a covered artificially ventilated space with no natural light and ventilation.

The aim was to see how much of a temperature difference is noticed in between the floors.

Occupancy Survey Feedbacks Ground Floor Electricity Workshop: All lights in this room are manually operated as the workers doing specialized work would need the light according to their needs. There are exhaust fans Staff Lounge:- No windows.

Room becomes stuffy at times.

This room is entirely artificially ventilated.

There are infra-red light sensors on the ceilings which detects movement and automatically switches on the lights. However there are blind spots at some places making it inefficient at times.

People prefer to sit closer to the windows due to varied thermal comfort.

There are spot lights in place, however their placement positions are not proper as they light up the surface above the cupboards.

There is a small pantry provision and printer area in this floor.

The light control switches are not user-friendly and they have dimmers which sometimes do not function as desired.

One window is manually operated whereas the others are all automated.

Architectural Workshop:- The water is linked to local heaters.

There are CO2 sensors in place.

Saw-dust waste from the workshop can be cleaned out using a vacuum pipe.

Mechanical Testing Room:- Skylights have rain sensors. Few windows are automatic as they prefer to operate the windows manually.

Windows on the East facade have blinds as before the John Henry Brookes Building was constructed. There would be solar glares coming in from the east side windows.

Most windows have CO2 sensors that open up automatically when CO2 level exceeds a certain threshold The meeting rooms have no natural light or ventilation The radiators in use are mostly blocked behind shelves of office documents

Based on the BUS Questionnaire responses, participants with interesting comments on their survey forms were privately interviewed to know in detail their grievances.

Their valuable inputs helped us in drafting the report’s Findings and Recommendations Section.

Some Sample Questions and Responses from Personal Interviews 1. What is the worst aspect of the building (if any)?

“Noise carried around the building. Distracting to hear the conversation noise. Its very stuffy when we have more people in meeting room. Meeting room door is kept open during summer.”

2. In terms of building needs, you said better ventilation needed, what do you think is the present problem behind this. . automatic windows close the window “I think one problem that we have is that we cannot open the windows when we need to get some fresh air. We have a lot of warm air coming up from Level 1 and it does get very stuffy and stale in here particularly in the afternoon, if we got more people in here then it gets stuffy in the morning and because we have this wonderful system, where automatically the windows close when it rains, you will only have to have a little bit of rain and it closes, and we cannot actually get an air flow flowing through. We would love to override the window opening. We have the single window facing that way out (along the Gibbs building side) which is kept open most of the time, I would say 99% of the time, but sometime we just need bit more air.

We do have times when individuals get very cold in here and at times others get very warm,

so it would be nice to just have the windows open say 5minutes and just over ride it, get a bit of air in and then close it off again. But we cannot do that.”

3.What are your comments about the meeting rooms on the second floor?

“It is also very stuffy when we have more people in here because of no ventilation and also it gets warmer and warmer as the year goes on. Summer time it is really unbearable to be here and then we find people sitting here for the meetings with the door opened and everyone else up here overhears the meetings which really is not a good idea, as we don’t want to hear their conversations out there, they are not necessarily our department. It also means that when the rooms have got stuffy when somebody has been in here for an hour or more and when the next group of people come in, it is really unpleasant to sit in here. Sometimes it is very stuffy, it smells, it is just not very nice. When it is quite, as it is today out there, we are speaking quite quietly, but we can hear the conversations of the people in the meeting room from outside. I feel if we have booked a meeting room, we would clearly want it to be with a bit of privacy. Plus the sound in here is not very good, for example, when you are taking calls in here you sound as if you are in a gold fish bowl”

RAJASWA BHAWAN-NATIONAL TAX HEADQUARTERS UNDERGRADUATION THESIS Idea behind this Topic From the very beginning of my College days in architecture, I have been fascinated by the history of architecture since it is a gateway to the wealth of knowledge on how forms were built in the past. A wide variety of building forms grew in different Indian contexts (socio, economic, environmental, political and cultural) in holistic manner similar to that of evolutionary Biology. Out of them, some continue to exist even today as Heritage Buildings.The historic buildings are the memories of our cities and connect us with our ancestors and our glorious past. By our apathy and neglect towards them we have allowed many of them to die slowly. And in this process, our built environment has been transformed into concrete jungle hardly with any trace of our cultural memory. Having said this, it must also be stated that some of the Indian architects in the last few decades have been able to create buildings founded on our architectural heritage. I have been deeply inspired by this movement. I thought that my thesis could be an excellent opportunity to explore this issue of Indian architecture based on its roots to ensure cultural continuity.

However, the present cannot be ignored since architecture throughout space and time has been reflections of their contemporary technology, social trends and aspirations of the people. Therefore, the changing world of today has an important place in architecture. Hence, I have viewed architecture as a peaceful co-existence of these two major issues and to me “Architecture is at the cross road of Continuity and Change”. In any project, the issue of continuity and change would largely depend upon the context. In a historical prescient this issue is more relevant than other places. Therefore, I started looking for a project in a context associated with significant history.That is when I happened to come across Rajaswa Bhawan. The elements that got me further hooked to this project were its context, the site’s location and the magnitude of the project. The Rajaswa Bhawan Project was a National Open Competition organized by The Government of India. After studying the design brief of Rajaswa Bhawan and considering its location, I Felt That This Project Was the Perfect Launch Pad for My Quest to Find a Balance between Continuity and Change.

Delhi as a Context- Macro Level Analysis Delhi is a city within cities. Throughout its glorious past, Delhi has been the struggle of power for many ambitious rulers.

Prithviraj Chauhan was the first ruler who had established a new city along the banks of the river Yamuna, he named it “The Qila Rai Pithora”. The Second City was built by Alauddin Khalji in 1303, he named it “Siri”. The Third City was made by Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq, he named it “Tughluqabad”. The Fourth City was made by Muhammad Bin Tughlaq he named it “Jahanpanah”. The Fifth City was made by Feroz Shah Tughlaq, he named it “Ferozabad”. The Sixth city was made by Humayun, he named it as “Dinpanah”. The Seventh City was made by Mughal Emperor Shahjahan, he named it “Shahjahanabad”.

The Eighth city was “Lutyen’s Delhi” made by the British Empire. All the seven cities were made along the banks of the river “Yamuna”. The Eighth City “Lutyen’s Delhi” is based on Hexagonal Grid arrangement(Macro Level), and since my site is located in Lutyen’s Delhi, I have taken the same concept of Hexagonal Grid arrangement for my site(Micro level).

The Eighth city’s feature which is the hexagonal grid arrangement feature is taken as the background of my site.

Furthermore, the same concept of the seven cities of historic delhi which all combine to form the modern Delhi of today, I have tried to follow nearly the same principle and divided the building into 7 building blocks. These 7 Building Blocks are Hexagonal in arrangement and they are all interlinked together to form one single building block. As it is not possible to fit in pure hexagonal arrangements in each and every block, a derivation of the hexagonal form is more likely to be the final output of my design. The Eighth Level is Also, as the river YAMUNA flowed along the banks of these seven cities of Delhi, I have introduced a water body which would be a flowing waterbody symbolizing the river Yamuna in my site. This flowing water body would be the perfect example of Continuity and Change as because, the water is the same, i.e. continuity of the water, yet at the same time, the flow of the water is the “change”

Identifying the Elements

The site is located at the intersection of Kasturba Gandhi Marg & Madhavrao Scindia Marg.

It lies to the left on the West of Kasturba Gandhi Marg as one moves towards the Connaught Place.

The intersection itself is in the form of a prominent roundabout within which sits an old Madarasa and the officeof All India Imams Organization.

Madhavrao Scindia Marg meets the Jaswant Singh Marg and Canning Road at thewestern end of the site. the site, therefore, is bound on three sides by roads and by Asia House and other plots on the fourthside.

the 8 storey Curzon Road Apartments.

On the roundabout and across Kasturba Gandhi Marg, opposite the site is the Delhi Kendra of Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan.

The fourth plot facing the roundabout and on the east of Kasturba Gandhi Marg is the Travancore House. Immediately after the site is the Asia House. The dismantling of these structures will take place thereafter.

The site measures 5.65acres(22871.20sq.m) and is rectilinear in shape with a width of 107m and a maximum depth of 243m. The shorter side faces the Kasturba Gandhi Marg.

SERVICE CORES, GRID STRUCTURES AND PARKING The service cores like the lifts, stairs, toilet cores and shafts were then designed. next step was determining the structural grid, which would suit the parking, circulation and service cores

CIRCULATION PATTERN Once the building profile was established, it was important to set the circulation pattern. nodes were created at the centre of each hexagon as well as their junctions. these were connected to form a continuous circulation path. The idea was to stimulate the meandering roads of old towns rather than the grid iron pattern of modern development. the hexagonal geometry proed to be conductive to this arrangement. The nodes were further developed into courtyards- a planform very intrinsic to indian architecture. however, these spaces were covered at the top for modern functional reasons. the courtyards metamorphosed into atriums.

10. HOUSING SETTLEMENT FOR PETH AREAS LOCATION:- PUNE Idea behind this Topic HISTORY OF FORMATION OF PETHS:During the PESHWA PERIOD (1720AD - 1858 AD), If The Ruler Wanted to set up a PETH, or Revitalize an Old One, He would Entrust the work to an Official known as SHETE-MAHAJAN. The Shete was asked to Build Roads, divide Plots, Invite settlers and Provide Amenities to Ensure that the PETH Grew. Specifically He Had to Initiate Economic Activity by establishing shops and bazaars for Both Local Crafts or Imported Goods.

At first, the peth was probably no more than a well laid out stone paved main road, with one or two wadas of the well to do probably also the residence of the SHETE and some huts.

As migrants, traders, shopkeepers, Bankers etc were enticed to come in and settle. The Shete would allot spaces for shops, houses and workshops.

He also had to provide water by digging wells and tanks or connecting up the Peth to the city’s elaborate Aqueduct system. Soon temples, Shrines, a bazaar, orchards, gardens, ward offices and police posts would appear. This is how a locality would Grow though a lot of freedom was left for the buildings, lanes and by-lanes were created from leftover spaces between houses.

Thus a certain amount of overall planning was combined with Impromptu development in the Peths

Introduction to Kasba Peth The earliest PETH, as also the Earliest settlement, it began to be called as KASBA from the 13th century AD. It had a heterogeneous population, with mixed castes and professions and was mainly residential. A very Crowded Peth, it grew slowly after 1765 when it had 923 houses, in 1819, during the first BRITISH census, it had 1048 Houses

Housing Typology in Peth Region

THE WADA :-

There was a flurry of building activities throughout the second half of the 18th century. Peshwas spent on improving civic amenities and the building of wadas reached its height, and came to be regarded as the typical residential structure of the Marathas.

A number of government wadas were built in the various Peths. Shaniwar wada renovated and buildings and embellishments added to it.The wadas became larger and more lavish. Their timber supports, wooden

ceiling and brackets acquired rich and intricate carved designs. The cypress shaped columns, which became associated with Maratha architecture, adorned the large diwan khana. Raised on a high stone plinth with walls of brick and lime plaster strengthened with timber frames, the wada was arranged around a series of courtyards. Ornamentation on these structures was not only for adornment of plane surfaces. it had a particular symbolic function as well. Executed in wood or in paint, ornamentation was usually found in certain designated areas in the house. The wadas have an introverted character with detailed ornamentation on the exterior. The whole house had a narrow frontage, but great depth. As the roads were not wide, the outer ornamentation of the house was meant to be appreciated only from close quarters. There were hardly any long vistas from where the building could be observed. This seems to have influenced the degree of detailing.

THE APARTMENT BLOCKS:

These are housing residences for a group of tenaments sharing the same facilities, the apartments have a common staircase at the centre of the building from where access to the various tenaments can be achieved.

THE CHAWLS:-

Chawls are tenament dwelling units built around the turn of the century to house Immigrants to the city. The chawl usually has single or two room dwelling units arranged in a liner fashion to form a row or container building. Infrastructural services like washing, bathing areas and toilets are shared by the inhabitants. The owner is generally not a resident of the chawl.

THE GHARS:-

Is an independent building two or three storeys high, with a front and backyard.

Dwelling rooms usually have one or two rooms. The largest dwelling unit is three roomed and has a diwankhana (living room), a Majghar(central room) and a Swayampakghar (kitchen).Access to the top storey is by a steep staircase, merely two feet wide located within the wall.

11. VOLUNTEERING AND TRAINING COURSES ARCHES, VAULTS AND DOMES COURSE BRIEF The AVD Theory course covered the structural design and construction of vaulted earthen masonry. It offered an indepth understanding of various methods of stability analysis for arches, vaults and domes following the principles of Limit Analysis of Masonry. The course focuses on the use of Compressed Stabilised Earth Block (CSEB) as a building material and vault construction methods developed by AVEI (e.g. the Free-spanning technique). VOLUNTEERING AND TRAINING COURSES Alternative and Energy Efficient Building Technology The course covered various aspects of the alternative technologies. The training methodologies included lectures, audiovisual presentation, hands on training and interactive open house discussions. The course content included were:-Energy in Buildings-Green Building concepts, -Alternatives in masonry, -Earthquake resistant masonry -Building with mud.-Foundation alternatives, -Filler Slab roof, -Composite T-Beam roof -Masonry vaults and domes-Cultural approach to design, -Bamboo as a construction material. -Case Studies The practical and Hands-on training Included Soil identification, Stabilized mud block making, Stabilized adobe block making, Rammed Earth Construction, Joints in masonry, Arch panels, Vaults, Domes and Use of bamboo in construction.

12. WORKSHOPS CONDUCTED 1. 5 DAY MASTER MASONS TRAINING, SIKKIM -June,2017 This Workshop is a part of the MoRDUNDP Partnership programme on PMAY-G Programme for the 13 States of India.

Each 5 DAY TRAINING Workshop at eadh of the 3 Districts included A Classroom Session on Day 1 on Best Construction Practices and an Earthquake Safety Session. This was followed by 4 days on-site Hands-on Session on PMAY-G Construction for capacity building of 40+ Masons, 5+Junior Engineers and 1+ Assistant Engineers of the District.

The main objective of the workshop was to show the best construction practices while the master masons build the PMAY-G Prototypes chosen by the State. As it was a 4 day hands on workshop, to ensure uniformity, the construction was done till plinth level and all the materials required for the house was brought in and made according to the design specifications across all the 3 workshop venues. This was done such that, the masons in charge of the house can just assemble them in place and construct the house faster.

Workshops conducted across JorethangSouth Sikkim, Gor-North Sikkim and Geyzing-West Sikkim.

12. WORKSHOPS CONDUCTED(CONTD) 2. TRIPURA Workshop This Two Day Workshop was held in Agartala City, Workshop presented by Dr.P.K.Das and Avishek Banerjee(me) with 117 participants which included the Ministry of Rural Development(MORD) Special Secretary, Additional Secretary, UNDP Country Director,Hon. MORD Minister, Principal Secretary, HUDCO-India, Chief Secretary RD Department-Tripura, District Magistrates of all Districts of Tripura, Block Development Officers, Notable dignitaries, IAY Beneficiaries, National Level Experts and the Junior Engineers, Technical Assistants and Rural Development Department of Tripura

This workshop was to showcase the Rural Housing proposal for the State of Tripura under the Indira Awas Yojana (now PMAY-G Programme) to the State Government and other visiting Dignitaries.

3. SETTLEMENT STUDY WORKSHOPS The main objective of the workshop was to get an idea on the people’s aspiration of a shelter.

At each settlement, workshop participants who were usually masons, housewifes and housing scheme beneficiaries were assembled at a central place. The women took lead in most of the workshops.

They were asked to draw their aspiration of a house if money was not a constraint. After initial hesitation, they took great interest to draw building plans showing the bedrooms, kitchens, etc. After the plans were drawn, the participants were asked to explain their designs. Many social intrinsic came up in the discussion which were recorded. The design ideas and the existing good examples of shelter formed the basis of suggested design options under this study. The idea was not to create something that is alien to them.

The workshop empowered the grass root people to exercise their right of designing their own shelter.
